  • 🇵🇱 Zamek w Międzybożu
    🇺🇦 Меджибізький замок
Construction period: the brick castle was built in the second half of the 16th century in place of the 14th-century castle, which in turn replaced a wooden structure built by Ruthenian princes in the 12th century.
Founder: Polish magnate and Grand Crown Hetman of the Kingdom of Poland Mikołaj Sieniawski.
    Historical note:
The original 14th-century castle and the the seat of the Koriatowicz family in Międzybóż (Medzhybizh, currently in Ukraine) was handed in 1539 by King of Poland Sigismund I the Old to a notable Polish magnate and Grand Crown Hetman of the Kingdom of Poland Mikołaj Sieniawski who completely rebuilt the stronghold.
Gwagnin's sixteenth century account states "𝘔𝘦𝘥𝘻𝘩𝘺𝘣𝘪𝘻𝘩 𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘢 𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘨𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘯 𝘤𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘣𝘳𝘰𝘢𝘥 𝘴𝘸𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘴". This was about to change. In 1539, Polish King Sigismund I the Old handed Medzhybizh to Mikolaj Sieniawski. The powerful fortified stronghold that took shape owes its existence to this family. Sieniawski ordered the construction of a large multi-storey bastion. The towers and walls were equipped with artillery positions. It became one of the strongest fortresses of the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland in Podolia. During subsequent Tartar invasions, the great courtyard served as a place of refuge for the local nobility. In the years 1672-1699, Medzhybizh belonged to the Ottoman Empire, serving as a residence for high-level officials. After the return of the castle to the Kingdom of Poland, it remained under Polish control until 1793.
The “PL-UA. History by drone” project consists of 100 short film productions depicting architectural monuments that were created in the period of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The series of short documentary films were screened in Ukraine. A Polish-Ukrainian team consisting of historians, journalists, writers, non-governmental organisations and youth joined forces to create the films. Project was financed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland.
