One of Buddha's teachings is that you should never believe everything that you are told (Kalama Sutra) and you should use logical reasoning to seek truth. This video is a fine example of that teaching.

I once try to read vedas just out of curiosity, i can't understand literally any sentence there 🐧 so i don't know how it makes senses to believe that god is bunch of anim*ls and human with colors a lot of hands with tools just like what kids used to draw from their imagination

Buddha seemed like a pretty chill guy, spent a lot of time thinking before he rushed into action and didn't wanna destroy anybody who didn't agree with him

Sri Lanka was under rule of no religion when buddha determined that after the parnirvana, the relics must stay in Sri lanka for safety until 5000 years(Buddha's relics will come out after 5000 years from the death and they will vanish after they all coagulated together and performed the last preach, in that, all the people who hear and understand will be triumphed the nirvana). Becuase of that determination, the sri lanka will never come under the rule of another opposition until 5000 years

A little point to avoid misunderstanding. As a prince budda had a luxurious life. Once he left the palace he practiced extreme hunger and poverty to find whether he can attain enlightenment through that path. But he understood neither extreme luxury nor extreme pain going to take you to Enlightenment and followed the MIDDLE PATH (not extreme luxury nor extreme pain)
Recorded human civilisation started around 5000bc.. Sumerians invented first writings and could be traced to 4000bc.. they invented most of our daily basic necessity today from time to wheels to buildings and the first religion written on cuneiform writings which tells about the great flood, adam and eve, multiple gods, avatars... later at 1400bc jewish religion came about and they started to pray to many Gods similar to sumerians.. at around 1500bc the indus civilisation collapsed and the dravidians went south of india and some stayed north at pakistan.. and came the aryan invasion with vedic teaching using sanskirt also at around 1500bc.. if vedic teaching was at around 1500bc, so vaishnavism which talks folktales of thousands of gods and avatars also shud hv appeared around this time.. so prevedic shaivism shud hv existed prior to 1500bc and likely the mode of religion in indus valley which goes back to 3000bc.. at 600 bc isiaih decided to merge all the gods into one because monotheism from buddhism were becoming popular at that time.. so monotheism appeared at around 600bc and then the start of christianity around 2bc.. jesus and buddha has lots of similarities so maybe both of them cud be the same person jz like how murugan cud be alexander the great.. because after buddha's teaching which made humans realise that god is only 1 (monotheism), after 600 years of realisation that god is only one emerged christianity.. so jesus christ cud be modified buddha's story.. and then at around 600AD.. muhammad modified every versions from sumerian, hebrew to bible and invented a better holy book and started propagating islam also a monotheism religion.. so basically monotheism already existed at indus civilisation and likely was prevedic shaivism.. and later as polytheism getting its peak around the world including india due to aryan invasion, buddha had to intervene and make everyone realise that god is only 1.. that is why the aryan version of hindu religion which is vaishnavism is still followed by us hindu till today.. buddhism somehow realised the actual teaching of monotheism is from prevedic shaivism not the aryan version of vaishnavism.. and then at around 320bc alexander the great came to india and only fought king porus and won but spared his life plus did not cont the war against the mauryan empire.. so he went back to babylon and died a few years after.. so the the demise made king chandragupta of maurya to make him the god of war in india as a deity because they already had thousands of gods at that time so they added him.. and that is how skanda kanda iskandar murugan is worshipped and murugan worshipping was at its peak during sangam era around 300bc and we still worship to murugan till today as the most populsr deity for the Tamils.. i think everyone shud start reading back history and to seek only for the truth, not jz blindly believe onto everything.. only the truth will prevail

Many deities were reverred yet reading Vedas and the Upanishads shows the belief in one God. Also the Aryans vedic religion and zoroastrianism have been proved to have evolved from the Proto-Indo European religion. The pre Aryan India was by no means a Monotheistic nation, and many Dravidian deities were absorbed into Aryan deities.
Ashoka pillar still exists in Lumbini, Nepal. It's a wonderful and peaceful place. The remains of the palace where Siddhartha (Buddha) was brought up are also there. One must see it in his/her lifetime.

One of the most important teachings: question everything.
Buddha preached this to a man called "Kalama". He was complicated by different opinions, came to Buddha & asked about his opinion. Buddha told him not to believe anything just because it is wrote, passed on by generations or told by anybody including Buddha himself, "unless you do not understand by yourself". You can find more on this in "Kalama Sutra" in Buddhist cannon.
This is one of the major differences Buddhism has from other religions.

Being a buddhist I too think some of the miracles mentioned in the scripts were aimed at creating devotion than documenting actual events.
According to Buddhist teaching buddha has achieved status to end his existence and he has asked his followers to follow Dhamma (Buddhist teachings) and always use inquiring mind and freedom to question anything.
Dhamma is more sacred than lord buddha. Buddha said that.
One who see through Dhamma are one who can see me. The Buddha saying.

I'm a buddhist too and I have a theory regarding the miracles. I think back then people are more inclined towards holy men practicing miracles than a normal person achieving enlightenment. You can look at Jesus and Hindu gods for example. So in order to gain more followers, his disciples had to make up Buddha to be this holy, enlightened being that can perform miracles.

Kushans embraced Buddhism and because of that Greco-Buddhism spread more into the Indian Subcontinent.

"Come, Kalamas. Do not go upon what has been acquired by repeated hearing; nor upon tradition; nor upon rumor; nor upon what is in a scripture; nor upon surmise; nor upon an axiom; nor upon specious reasoning; nor upon a bias towards a notion that has been pondered over; nor upon another's seeming ability; nor upon the consideration, 'The monk is our teacher.' Kalamas, when you yourselves know: 'These things are bad; these things are blamable; these things are censured by the wise; undertaken and observed, these things lead to harm and ill,' abandon them."
"Come, Kalamas. The most basic teachings of the Tathagata are The Four Noble Truths and The Noble Eightfold Path and these can be observed through meditation that is Vipassana. Vipassana is the core of Buddha's teachings.

Do you know where can I find Tipitaka Atthakatha in English online? I did some online searching and I could only find the original Pali texts with no translation
@@chasestefanson8501 -- Typically, the commentaries are found within some translations of certain books of the Pali Cannon. Others leave out the commentaries as being apocryphal. As you may have observed, not all of the Suttapitaka has been translated into English. let alone the commentaries.

Name Siddharth Gautama has a very beautiful meaning: 'Siddharth' means 'he who has found his true value/meaning in life' and 'Gautama' meaning 'someone who makes darkness go away'.
Wrong. Siddh means accomplished, artha means world / money. Siddhartha means one who is successful in the world.
Gautama comes from "Go" & "Tama" , Go means Cow, and Tama means many. Goutama means one who owns many cows or one who cares for many cows.
Its a bit silly to spin your own interpretation on the names.

The name Gautam is one of the ancient Indian names and is derived from the Sanskrit roots "gŐ(गः)" and "tama (तम)". "Tama" means "darkness" and "gŐ" means inter alia "bright light". Together, they means the Sun.

Jainism also talks about the presence of The Buddha. And both their stories are very similar.

People from the Indus valley civilization(One of the oldest) followed Hinduism. Hinduism isn't about one god or one way, there are four different ways to attain Moksha(Liberation). Loving God and all the creatures is just one among many. Coming to the point if Hindiusm is mythology? It's not. Quran is around 1400 years old. Whereas, Vedas( Sacred Hindu text) is much much older. Some estimates are 20,000 years older. The dating on current ones are 5,000 years old before that everything was taught orally.

The fact that all of these men (Gautama, Jesus, Muhammad) were all social reformers although most people and history caste them as spiritual guides. A careful reading of their messages and what we know of their histories reveals that each was dissatisfied with the social status quo of their time, and set out to reform the perspectives and values of society at their time. Gautama was so transfixed by the human suffering that he observed, and dedicated his life and teachings to methods (distilled to Precepts) that were aimed at remedying these observed social defects. Precepts 3-5 suggest that lack morals and decadence were behind a great deal of suffering (sexual misconduct, telling falsehoods, taking wine, liquor or intoxicants) and much could be remedied by avoiding these things. Not much has changed. His extensive lecturing about family relations, employer-employee relations and how one relates to society once again seemed aimed at reducing or eliminating suffering. All great reformers (Martin Luther, Martin Luther King, and on and on) seem to be motivated by perceived social ills and misconduct. The “Big Three” of Buddha, Jesus and Muhammad simply rise above the pack of worthy reformers as their messages have endured time. Unfortunately us humans tend to muddy their noble messages by ritual and glorification of the messenger rather than their messages of great reform.

Let me correct you brother Lord Krishna was a Yaduvanshi Kshatriya. At first, Chandra-Vamsha was known as Soma-Vamsha(Soma= moon or silver), and during the reign of King, Yayati Soma-Vamsha has divided its 4 different clans where Chandra-Vansh and Yadu-Vansh were two of the major fractions of the Soma-Vamshi clan.
The moon/sun dynasty thing is also present as Cambodia first dynasties.

Whole Indian subcontinent has similiar culture and traditions and religious sentiments .... The people were pretty much the same except Nepalese are blends of Kirats with Kshetriyas and Brahmins .....

Buddha left from present day - Nepal to present day - India to spread his ideology ..... India is the place where Buddha got enlightenment ...I openly admit that ! Why can't you guys admit that Buddha was born in present-day Nepal... There are many historical events and even religious events based on places in Nepal.....Even the Pandavas during their vanavasa went to hills and forests of Nepal to be away from Hastinapur .... Many events based on Shiva Purana has occured in Nepal......
Give a space for Nepal to claim history as well......
India ia bigger diverse nation with tons of history and it is a significant and holy place for Nepalese people as well.....

To put it in simple, Buddha teaching is about balance your life and be rational. The are always good and bad in our world, but u need to balance your path by stay in the middle of it. U can not avoid for commit both good and bad, so you need to use rationality to pick what path that you need to chose the path that is not so bad and still have some good reason/purpose that suit your life , you just need to make sure that your conscious is well balance to make keep moving on; later at some time of your age, you will understand the meaning of life after all the path you been through, now that is 'Enlightenment'.
I appreciate your representation of Buddhism here, but describing the suttas as "short, wise sayings attributed to the Buddha" is like saying that the Gospels are short, wise sayings attributed to Jesus. The translation of the Maha-satipatthana Sutta (about the establishing of mindfulness) is around 5,500 words long.
Maybe I have weird standards but I think that 5,500 words is not long at all. That's the length of an average scientific article. And a gospel is very much an entire book.
@@Palaa94 Fair enough! I think the problem with calling them "short, wise sayings" is that, to those unfamiliar with the teachings, suttas may be thought of as something like aphorisms or platitudes. But this not the style of suttas, at all. They are most often discourses featuring back-and-forths between the Buddha and an inquisitor(s) about a central theme. These can become very detailed and thorough. Referring to them as "sayings" doesn't fit very well, to me.
To clarify my analogy: Does it make sense to call a chapter in Mark a "saying"?

@@petewerehere The four canonical gospels are clear narratives written in the style of a Greek novel. The suttas are just a collection of dialogues. There is no part in the suttas where it says, "after he said this, the Buddha got up, gathered his followers, then moved by boat across the Ganges river to come to the house of Padma and Mathuran where he was received by their eldest son and dined with them. He stayed there for three days and three nights, leaving at the dawn of the fourth day, etc, etc..." which is the majority of the contents of the canonical gospels. Jesus' sayings actually comprise less than 30% of the gospels, with most of the contents being stories of his life. Mark, the oldest gospel, doesn't even care much about preserving Jesus' sayings, being mostly a narrative of the Passion. This is in direct contrast to Eastern scriptures like the suttas and the Chinese philosophical treatises which are just a bunch of actual sayings of the sage with very little actual narrative of what the sages did.
That said, there may have been a lost Christian tradition of writing sayings gospels like the non-canonical Gospel of Thomas, which is the closest thing we have to a Christian sutta.

(I hate to do this because it's such a cliché, but here it goes...) The Oxford English Dictionary defines a saying (noun) as: "a short, pithy expression that generally contains advice or wisdom."
It's hard for me to see how that definition could encompass all that the suttas are. And, it would be just as hard for me to define the Gospels that way, which is why I brought them up in the first place. The suttas and the Gospels both contain so much more than "short, pithy expressions". I hope that clears things up.
Also, the Gospel of Thomas sounds interesting, and I'll be looking into it! Thanks for pointing it out!
As an addendum:
The suttas do contain sections that read as a narrative. For example, passages from the Maha-parinibbana Sutta tell of events before, during, and after the Buddha's death. Among these events are instances of the Buddha traveling with his followers and the Buddha's last meal (food poisoning from this meal is what causes his death).
Two excerpts:
1. Then the Blessed One addressed the Venerable Ananda, saying: "Come, Ananda, let us cross to the farther bank of the Hiraññavati, and go to the Mallas' Sala Grove, in the vicinity of Kusinara."
"So be it, Lord."
2. And the Blessed One, together with a large company of bhikkhus, went to the further bank of the river Hiraññavati, to the Sala Grove of the Mallas, in the vicinity of Kusinara. And there he spoke to the Venerable Ananda, saying:
3. "Please, Ananda, prepare for me a couch between the twin sala trees, with the head to the north. I am weary, Ananda, and want to lie down."
...
17. And Cunda the metalworker, after the night had passed, had choice food, hard and soft, prepared in his abode, together with a quantity of sukara-maddava, and announced it to the Blessed One, saying: "It is time, O Lord, the meal is ready."
18. Thereupon the Blessed One, in the forenoon, having got ready, took bowl and robe and went with the community of bhikkhus to the house of Cunda, and there sat down on the seat prepared for him.

I think the tree in Bodh Gaya is not the original tree but a tree grown from the cutting of a tree grown from a cutting of the original tree.

A sapling was brought from the Bo tree in Anuradhapura in Srilanka, which was a tree planted from a sapling from the original tree, some 2300 years ago. So its as good as the original one. BTW the Bo tree at Anuradhapura is supposed to be the oldest surviving planted tree.
