I got my 65 during a winter storm advisory in New York, normally a ?? 8 hour drive ? IDK. Uhaul guy #2 said, oh I had a dr appointment, I'm not sticking around in this snow. It snowed the whole trip ! I took my front spindles off my 67 since the 65 had no front spindles ! Anyway, that was like 10 years ago - sea blue sticker still in place and you can see it in teh cargo door when you open it and since the door panels are long gone, you see the sea blue there too. Which is was rust free as as yours....doesn't matter, I'll fix it
Gotta love a good recovery story hahah and yeah I already did all the welding and repairs. She looks great now. Will be putting out videos showing the progress
Great score guys, have you guys driven a splity before? They are way different to a bay, more white knuckle drive ;) Will be interesting to see what you guys do :)
Yeah we have. I feel like king pin beams feel a little more responsive and less sluggish than the ball joint in a bay. Either way though hahha we are definitely used to driving a bus
Up to you. But it not build to carry 1,500 or 2,000 full loaded lb, too small engine and air cool. Suspension over worked. Need more torque, your be down shifting 3th on the freeway long hills then it need an over drive tranmision on the straight or over working the engine in 4 gear . You're asking it to be a truck. Water is 17 lb 1 gallon Then part break . Auto repair my state will not take pre 2,000 cars they say if we can't get part it taking up space. They're too busy, so then your need to rent a hotel fir a week and tow job. I been there with a 1996 ford van. So I gave it to the junk yard and brought a transit, with the 6 sp auto Tran I save 100 a month on gas, the thing is all my time I wasted buikd it , but the suspension bushing may as week do all, but everyone said just one part of many can't find the part they are stuck, my law they can't allow it back on the road with a missing part. That why auto repair wouldn't take it. But up to you, keep a record list what you spend, it be 20 k as a used new van.
You're asking a 60 year old van to be a daily work horse everyday, it tired. Lol be real, and your putting or investing 6 month work on a gamble. But it be fun to see your struggle utube . Lol
Thank you! We actually have already done multiple bills and have done 30+ thousand miles every year on air cooled Vw’s. For this Bus, I rebuilt the entire suspension system to accommodate more weight, I put in a 2110 and had a specific gearing for my drive to be able to accommodate more torque for the extra load. We have completely rebuilt every part of this entire van already. We will be regularly uploading the videos showing what we did Also, anytime we have broken down. We have been able to fix it on the side of the road. I have never had to call a tow. Do all the work and all of the repairs myself.
Adding the wagon back tail light are inadequate compote to today big very bright back light. if you got under 70 mph even 18 wheel go 70s lol. They pass you 30 mpg faster .I once seen a bike hit a vw bus on the side of me he didn't see it till to late. He hit it and hang on to the bus. Try look at the light at night. It tiny and it very low. Hard to see if the sun rise or sun set in front of you & looking From the back. Any junk yard light on the lower roof would work Wonders

I just looked up what restored 68 goes for…. $80,000.!!!👍
They definitely have gotten expensive. But the market is actually good amount lower than that right now thankfully
The patina that old bus has is amazing
Yessss. You only get sunbaked patina like that if it’s been sitting forever.
Great find and an awesome bus!
