Gawd, this was a hoot. Such beautiful country, but those "roads!" You gotta wonder if the Wolfsburg fabrikarbeiter ever dreamed that the buses they were assembling would still be put to the test like this over 50 years later. And then of course at 8:50 there was "fart-vegnugen." Getting excited when you meet a Vanagon or a '63 Beetle on the road reminds me of riding in my dad's brand-new 1960 Beetle on Long Island, NY... When we spotted another (then rare) VW, we'd honk and wave! Glory days. Guys, you keep on writing those chapters. -Burt in NJ

We broke down in a 71 due to a burnt out brush in the generator. No joke, got towed to Bus Depot they were closed. Walked out to the flea market next to Bus Depot, bought a chop saw, took the brushes out of that and hacked them into fitting. Got us out of Perkieomenville Pa to a place where we could get the right set.

I know you guys like to run points in your distributors, but the number of times I have seen you guys have problems with the points, I would think that is getting old ;-) I had a '73 beetle where I was constantly messing with the points (2007 cc engine with a 009 distributor), and I replaced them with one of the in distributor solid state modules, and I never had a problem again, and I drove that car everyday for years.
Yeah, I have mine also replaced with a electronic ignition on my 009, had no problem ever, maybe they like to stop more often. The adventure is to stop every time.

When I was 7 or 8 . My parents drove a vw bus transporter thunk it was an 67 with sliding door . From the uk to Pakistan and back .
A year later dad and I and two Iof his mates. Uk to Nigeria

Back in the 70's i camped all over Big Bend in my 70 Beetle. Never got stranded once. Seeing a lot of spots that I took that old gal in this video. Thanks for the video and rekindling my memories.

Oh hell yeah, this is where old VWs belong. I took my 411 down there last year and it was fantastic.
Come do the Gambler 500 Mexico! Next one's in May, IIRC. Most of it's on the Texas side of Big Bend, and it's a blast.

Old VWs ain’t no Toyota or Honda. They never were. I drove from Nacogdoches to Austin to visit my sister and brother in law in 1975, in my 1971 VW Bug. It did fine until we met for lunch at the old Hansel and Gretel’s Restaurant. Then it wouldn’t start after our meal. So we went back in for another beer. And then it did start. Must have been a vapor lock. To keep a Vintage VW going, you have too know how to show it some love. 😎👍

My first engine in Rambus I filled up on the southside of San Antonio and had to get gas at Baton Rouge LA. but that was back in the 55 mph days.

The generator issue I would expect, but an alternator failure? Interesting. They usually last so long, I would expect that.

You guys have helped me make my mind up. Now we live in Portugal we have to sell our UK reg Vivaro van self build camper (T4 size) and have two choices...1. Buy a small motorhome with all mod cons, or 2. A VW T3/T4 van a make a removeavle interior (due to self build laws here in Portugal? and "Carry on Camping"...a British comedy film.
I am 70 years old, my wife 48..lucky her!! The motorhomes are all full of old fat farts, who watch TV all day and many don't come out. I have camped all my life, tents, roof tents and 3 campervans all self built. We have a dog and a cat that come with us everywhere.
Maybe when I get to 80 I will get a motorhome, but I am young in spirit like you guys, I envy the numerous hippy comunities here in Portugal, but couldn't do it myself.
So thanks for showing me the way lads...yeh we are into farting too, it's healthy.
