@@RBPTrains sorry I’m late to the party about the comments, but there are a few interesting things that might come out of this catalog that you could take advantage of. The first one is that one of the New York central Dreyfus Hudsons is a fantasy paint scheme inspired off of the black lightning, New York Central livery from later in the railroads history and it would be rather interesting having a Dreyfus Hudson that had that one as well as a prototypical one. The thing on my however, would be most looking forward to is waiting until Christmas. (or maybe Christmas in July if you’re into that sort of thing.) would be to run both one of your polar express sets along with the sleigh bell limited North Pole central diesel, set at the same time that would look pretty awesome! finally, if you have a union, pacific challenger, double heading that with the big boy would make a interesting sight.
I'm finding that with a lot of things. Up to the beginning of 2022 I usually paid 29 to 69 cents for a dozen eggs. I can't find them for less than 4.99 right now.
@@billschannel1116 Yeah. It's called what happens when a pandemic disrupts the supply lines and some folks upstairs decide that a little bit of graft can go along with it.
I'll hold out for wait-and-see, Chris. Not that I doubt your acute sense of what's next in O gauge collectibles, it just seems some of these choices are a little far out there. Thanks for stepping out on a limb. Really brave!
Dear Chris, my son recently discovered your videos and is now officially hooked on trains for life. We love your hilarious and well done videos. Keep up the awesome work!
Hi Chris, I love the way you made this video of the catalog and I love that you showed the same engines that were on the front. You are 1 of the best youtubers on earth.
Completely agree. Great video and insights. I can't for the 20th century limited, the Big Boy super set and the 4 sets of add on stock and reefer cars and the Christmas set you mentioned! It's gonna be a long wait! Lol
Gosh Chris! This is magnificent! I bet Addie is enjoying her Hiawatha even sharing with Claire and Bailey. Bailey seemed a bit snooty last year. Wonder what your wife's name is. You know 2023 is the 30th anniversary of the I Love Toy Trains video series by TM Books and Video. Narrated by Jeff McComas. In I Love Lionel from 2000, we see Jeff and meet Lenny the Lionel Lion, Lionel's legendary mascot. It has been about a year since my grandfather passed away and I really miss him.
We are a big fan of disney stuff but we recently posted a tribute video to the Thomas the Tank and Friends items done by Lionel. We forgot how much we value O gauge Thomas items by Lionel. Come on, Lionel, lets produce James and Gordon to go along with the O gauge thomas, diesel, persey, troublesome trucks,. Now, that would be our pick for lionel collectables... so RBP you have any Thomas?
Hi Chris! First kudos to redoing your layout. I thought original was great but improvements were awesome! Well done. Thanks for input on catalog. Mm car and I think Dreyfus are incredible pieces! Thanks for taking time to do your vids for train lovers to enjoy.
Lol when I saw this video in my feed, I was thinking, he’s gonna put the wonka stuff on the list since the weird stuff like that is usually valuable down the road. Same thing is true for my MTH Coors lite silver bullet set. The thing is worth a metric crap ton nowadays. On a side note, wish I had the money for the Dreyfus, but as a college student, that is a no no for me, so I’ll have to roll the dice down the road and hope I get lucky. I have an old MTH J1e Hudson that was converted to tmcc (engine is super finicky) that I suppose scratches the itch for now. I agree with your choice for number one. Some of the die hard collector collectors would like those North Pole express stuff, especially if they get the full set. When the item is commercially a flop, (which it might be since most people will be occupied with the large lad) the items that sell less become wayyy more valuable down the road.
Interesting predictions. While I am not an EMD person, yes, the Holiday E8's and passenger cars look wonderful. Very tempting, but I don't think my wife will like the price... 😜 And... As you said, finally the Dreyfuss Hudson!!! Yes!!!
Prices are outrageous for modern Lionel. I'll stick to early 2000's and before. As a 22-year-old who has gotten their first set just recently (1940s 2026) I don't see myself getting a "new" set. With how modern manufacturing is now a days, $1000+ for a set or even a 4 pack of passenger cars is eye gouging. A lot of older fellas are opting out entirely.
Coupled with terrible quality control as of late with little to no service if something happens. Yeah that is why I stick to HO and traditional Lionel like you. Apparently though some fanboys are calling us babies and whiners because we aren't rich enough to afford these every year. How dare we have an opinion contrary to theirs!
@cheetah The 2026 is a great engine! I am a huge fan of the Post War era. It is my go-to between videos. The scale sets definitely fetch some big prices. Luckily, the Lionchief line has some good offerings that are not quite as expensive. And to your point, plenty of great used engines out there from the early 2000s that we can find at good prices.
Yes that North Pole Express looks great and you're fortunate enough to have the layout where you can run large engines like that definitely a fun one for Christmas coming up 👍👍
The 21" cars are insanely long. Luckily they made the Christmas Camelback too which will be much more versatile for all sizes of layouts. Thanks for watching Charles!
All video I was hoping that was where you were going for number 1, I definitely agree. Will get overlooked by many and bring big $$ down the road. I think the dark grey Dreyfuss may fall in there, too as most will order the ones with matching passenger cars.
Great minds think a like on the Dreyfuss set - that was one of the catalog items I ordered. Right on with Trainworld...always great customer service. I was a bit surprised at your Willy Wonka set pick, but I enjoyed the self critical editing...that was funny. I also pulled the trigger on the Frisco 1630 Russian decapod...it was hard to resist as IRM is in our neck of the woods. But the main question of the day....have you seen That 90's Show and what were your thoughts?
Chris, I have to agree with your #1 pick from the Lionel Volume 1 2023 catalog and think you're spot on! I can tell you this much, I'm going to be 55 this year and have been collecting most of my adult life, at least the past 34 years of it and this is the most expensive set I've ever purchased including my Standard Gauge Blue Comet. It's also probably he one I'm most excited about seeing! All in all, awesome video, awesome layout, awesome channel and above all you're doing an awesome job promoting the hobby, thanks for your efforts!!!!!!! Hopefully I see you at York and get a chance to say thanks in person.
Your channel is making me want to start O Scale. I have a bunch of HO Scale boxed up in my garage. Built a layout a few years back but my son, who loves trains went Godzilla on it so everything went back to boxes until he learns to treat trains with respect :-) .
Very nice video Chris, and great predictions. I actually go to Trainland to purchase many of my products. They have a great store and a lot of inventory. There definitely is a lot of really cool stuff coming out this year that's for sure. 👍
Hey Chris, great video. It’s funny, when I first saw the catalog, the Christmas North Pole Central really stood out to me as the set I want to have. The colors of course, really stood out. It will most probably be one of my picks for Pre Ordering, along with the Polar Express Ice Fast Track and Ice Diorama, and the 2023 Christmas Boxcar that will keep my collection going with all of the other Christmas boxcars I’ve purchased dating back to 1986 when I bought my 1st one.
@@RBPTrains I actually would like to do a video on them, but I’m thinking I might want to wait a little while until I get to that 40 mark from 1986. I’m not sure. What do you think? Enjoy your weekend as well Chris!
Hello friends, I am 15 years old and I am Mexican, and I would like to start collecting Lionel trains, how would you recommend me to start?. (great video, very nice machines.)
So many amazing models, and great job on choosing a holiday train very early, I'd never have thought of that myself. I just want to say, I like how they chose 4019 for the Big Boy on the cover, and to me, the Big Boy would probably be the most collectible set in my opinion.
Hey Chris? If you are available this weekend, I am going up to the train show in Timonium on Saturday, and maybe you could come too! Hope I see you there!
Seems to me Lionel is just trying to KILL what is left of a great hobby. I think Mike from MTH saw the writing on the wall and jumped ship. Go into any local hobby shop and look at all the old new stock they have sitting around. All the collectors are either dying or just to old to stay in the hobby anymore. The younger generation doesn't have much interest. Very sad. I hope I am wrong with my thoughts.... I really do....

Talking about future collectible sets, I think the Gold Mountain set #2323130, is a contender. It's all central pacific and when has lionel ever made a ready-to-run set with the Central Pacific Name on it let alone anything marked for the Central Pacific. Very little.
I have the 2023 catalog and I like what's on there even that Lionel e8 Amtrak unit and the new York central one too! And I think everyone is going to get the big boy 4014 restoration version And my mom really likes the willy Wonka set I showed her!
Depends on where you order from. If it is a local brick and mortar then yes. If you order from some place like TrainWorld or other big online retailers they give you a choice.
@@OriginalBongoliath oh interesting, I didn’t know that bigger retailers give a choice. I live about 6 or 7 hours away from (Trainworld) in New York. It’s quite a long road.
RBP Victor from New Jersey how are you? Numbers 2 and 3 I was with Number one left field I'm not sure what it'll be. I'm thinking that little Mickey mouse car number one show many Mickey mouse freaks out there that's my call
I'm looking at the FTs. They are most affordable. I like the Texas Special on pages 88-89 with all the extras. I wonder if there is an uncatalogued FT B unit.
@@RBPTrains it definitely will be!! I’m glad they’re finally reissuing this set, but part of me so hoping that they would have done this as a Visionline passenger set, who know what fun they could have had with that! Hahaha!
Unless Lionel also got the sound files for the NYC 6 chime from MTH I wouldn’t get one unless I was willing to install PS3 into one. I’d grab a BB and that Willie Wonka set, all of the items in that IP set really.
Chris I was wanting to ask you, if you had to pick one dryfus which one would you pick? Which one is more collectible? Is the coal one more collectible or the one with the passenger set?
You know, there’s some rivarossi O gauge scale ICRR 382 on eBay. You might try get that one before gets selled to someone else. And some are in pretty good price
I’m glad you are happy about the catalog because the entire O Gauge fandom is freaking out and saying stuff like “ Oh my god this stuff is so expensive” and “I’m done with Lionel.” Those people are just being babies. I’m not quitting them yet.
And you are completely out of touch with what the average American is going through with your ivory tower ignorant arrogance. Not everyone can afford to drop over $2K for a train while people are getting laid off left and right, inflation is out of control (the highest it has ever been in 40 years!), people are going in to debt just to pay for food, and wages have not kept up with the cost of living/services. The middle class is nearly gone. The only way you can afford to buy these new sets every year is if you are making 6 figures or high 5's at a bare minimum and I say good for Chris and everyone else who were able to make it in life and got lucky on the job market to land what little high paying jobs are left but you have no right to berate people for getting sticker shock when your average person is struggling. This on top of the numerous Lionel quality control issues since they moved production to Vietnam as of late making it more of a gamble to risk your money buying a broken product and Lionel not only giving you no service but berating you that "they are just toys and you should expect the issues as they come" acting like we owe them.
I have a suggestion for you to do for the next video wanna do a union pacific enter mobile big boy are you followed up with a Santa Fe steam locomotive cold drag
My pick will be the Big Boy set. I think the boxcar is exclusive to the set but I could be wrong. Don’t disagree with the Dreyfus and the Legacy Christmas Train. The length of the set while cool will limit those who might use it for a Christmas Display. My tracks go around the room but just the tree but people say I am “touched”😜. I think the Wonka Collection is out in left field, but who knows? I do wish that Lionel would space their release of their pieces. Seems like everything comes out at once. Prices are going up but that just means I am being more selective on what I get. Lionel quality is not high but I am a MoPaR fan and neither is theirs. This does make me pause on buying too many modern engines where I am not sure they can be repaired in 20 or so years. Lionel not letting the local store repair is not a step in the right direction.
Chris, another great video, those E8s are beautiful and the Wonka set is quite intriguing! Thanks for sharing! Gives me some ideas for custom paints too cuz rather than complain about high prices of newer trains, I just fix up a pair of beater Marx E7s and paint my own if I can't afford the new ones! ua-cam.com/video/_tka0CLcMjY/v-deo.html
i havent collected trains for 20 plus years but, my dad still is a train collector. the first time i watched your channel, was at his place over the past holidays. i've enjoyed watching your content the last few months.
yes, RBP does an excellent video presentation... there is also chris trains, country bunker, boomer, . We started our own channel because watching and, surprisingly, sharing is a lot of fun. We get to know so many trains guys and their layout in a way not possible before youtube. Gary
Writing down my 3 I think will be most collectable before I watch the video. VL BB, the Hudson(with water scoop affect) and the E8 Aberdeen livery. With the Russian Decapod being a close alternative to the Hudson(I have a feeling they won't be done again for a very long time). Just my 2 cents.
With Lionel announcing new tooling for the 2023 Dreyfuss Hudson, and MTH now defunct (RIP o7), what are the odds they picked up MTH's molds/patterns to use for this release?
According to the Live Stream that Lionel hosted, the Dreyfuss in this catalog is based on Lionel's original version and has been modified. Should be interesting to see what it looks like in real life! Thanks for watching
Not going to lie, I was looking to get the Sleigh Bell Limited. Just has that classic Christmas feel with the red, green, and silver paint scheme. Aside from that I was actually thinking about picking up some BUDD RDC cars. I'm hoping someone does a custom CNJ run of them. All this depends on what my wallet allows though. Have a whole bunch on preorder and this stuff is only getting more expensive. lol.
People are going to buy the 2-10-0 Russian Decapod #1630. I don’t know if you are aware of it being in the catalog, but I know a lot of people will definitely be buying that as I love the 1630.
Nice Video Chris , as far as the Dreyfus I hope they use the correct Whistle , Lionel Always finds away to deviate from correct sound files . This coming from a MTH Dreyfus PS3 owner . Thanks for the Fun Video (:

I actually ordered the legacy big boy 2 years ago but really wanted a vision line version to go along with my vision line challenger. It's also the very first running steam engine I've seen in person. So I figure I'll trade in my legacy big boy for the vision line. I also preorderd the Dreyfuss with the long coal tender and the Pennsy hippo with the long haul tender. Cannot wait! It's easily my favorite catalog lionel has come out with in a long while.
@RBPTrains I do, my grandfather passed down everything he owned to me which happened to be a lot. He was in an issue of (trains magazine) and thank you for posting! Actually seeing your layout has inspired me to add on to the top tier of my layout so I can run some bigger engines
what size layout do you have to run those larger engines and is 072 curves ok for your engines? We actually added many parking tracks with oh so many switch tracks because we hate to lift those heavy engines over and over, fearing damage. Gary
AH…GOOD CALL!!! The holiday set is a sleeper for sure and the paint will be amazing!! I wish you hadn’t brought it to my attention:( I also REALLY liked the black and white early Disney cars…sooo cool and graphic. Still might order them. The NYC E8 set and Dreyfus were on my list for sure. I’m Pennsy and NYC so that’s saves me a lot of money that would be otherwise going to purchase Big Boys :/
That ending scene is perfect.

@@OriginalBongoliath oh interesting, I didn’t know that bigger retailers give a choice. I live about 6 or 7 hours away from (Trainworld) in New York. It’s quite a long road.
I think I am going to pull the trigger on the big boy, just trying to figure out which one to buy!
Well after a couple old fashions and the wife out of the room a few minutes I put my order in for the big boy 4014! 😂
I had to get the coal fired 4014 I love the depleting coal factor on it.
I bet as soon as rbp gets the Hudson he will do a video of all the Hudson’s running
Haha! You can see the future clearly 😊
RBP Victor from New Jersey how are you?
Numbers 2 and 3 I was with
Number one left field I'm not sure what it'll be. I'm thinking that little Mickey mouse car number one show many Mickey mouse freaks out there that's my call
I'm looking at the FTs. They are most affordable. I like the Texas Special on pages 88-89 with all the extras. I wonder if there is an uncatalogued FT B unit.
Great video Chris!!! I can actually see that scale Christmas set becoming hard to find, the design on the entire set is really cool!
Thanks @dizguy89! There is something about that one that I kept returning to when I was brainstorming for this video. Going to be something special!
Not a hard choice for me lol I ordered 3 big boys and the big boy set all from Mr.muffins
Nice! Serious power there
First time I enjoyed your trains will be checking for future broadcasts Thanks
I preordered the Visionline Big Boy 4014 oil burner restoration and the dreyfuss hudson j3 with the 6 passenger cars for the engine.
RPb do you have any whitcomb or General Electric o scale locomotives move
really like that Sleigh Bell Limited. I'm in the process of moving to Mobile Alabama for work so train buying is on hold for now.
Despite it's really a bigboy and badass, I wanna too, but 2.9k is that a fair price?
Chris I was wanting to ask you, if you had to pick one dryfus which one would you pick? Which one is more collectible? Is the coal one more collectible or the one with the passenger set?
"RBP Trains is not a fiduciary. Past performance is not a guarantee of future results."😆
You know, there’s some rivarossi O gauge scale ICRR 382 on eBay. You might try get that one before gets selled to someone else. And some are in pretty good price
I’m glad you are happy about the catalog because the entire O Gauge fandom is freaking out and saying stuff like “ Oh my god this stuff is so expensive” and “I’m done with Lionel.”
Those people are just being babies.
Well can’t just leave a comment, going to have to make a video with my thoughts! Haha
That Big Boy set is going to be epic!
I wish I had more than $3 on me so I could get that dreyfuss hudson
I wonder if they're going to put out a Challenger I'm not sure how to get a hold of Lionel catalog for 2023
Lionel has an online catalog on their website. That or find a local train store or train show to get one there.
@@OriginalBongoliath OK thank you
in volume 2 they should model the dmir yellowstone in visionline instead of repainting a legacy em-1
helu, 1st??
Hi Chris, I think you should run the Hiawatha hudson in your next livestream.
Hey chris! Did you know that a restoration group found the dreyfuss hudson cars?
Have the old New York Central streamlined Hudson. Some one told me it is prewar. Not sure.
The North Pole Express was a huge miss for me.
I bet he is the “cool” uncle
Haha!
Lionel made a looney tunes train set for this year it's fantastic I can't afford it though
are you thinkin of getting the lightning and thunder set from broadway limited?
Lionel using the mth tooling on their 2-8-0 had me interested 😂
I know the scalpers on ebay will take advantage of this or already have.
If the big boy is the 4014 how can the big boy be a 4019 it has not even been restored.
Question: How can your afford these things
Plastic on wheels that won’t last more than 2 years, garbage.
WW is great looking train. Got to get that. Fav movie also.
i havent collected trains for 20 plus years but, my dad still is a train collector. the first time i watched your channel, was at his place over the past holidays. i've enjoyed watching your content the last few months.
yes, RBP does an excellent video presentation... there is also chris trains, country bunker, boomer, .
I pre ordered NYC 5454 and UP 4024. I am tempted to pre order 4014 but I have that in g scale from MTH.
Gonna have some nice trains on the way!
Don't buy. Resell value will be horrible.
Amazing train love that style
Lionel 746 J, 774 Hudson and GG1s hands down
With Lionel announcing new tooling for the 2023 Dreyfuss Hudson, and MTH now defunct (RIP o7), what are the odds they picked up MTH's molds/patterns to use for this release?
Agree that it will be a popular seller. Very cool!
You actually kinda surprised me Chris. I seriously thought that you were going to pick the Dreyfus Hudson as number 1?
Nice Video Chris , as far as the Dreyfus I hope they use the correct Whistle , Lionel
Always finds away to deviate from correct sound files . This coming from a MTH Dreyfus PS3 owner . Thanks for the Fun Video (:
What's happening on eBay?
Well hello Chris great video I agree with all of your suggestions the Christmas train looks amazing I hope to see it on your layout Im N scale WAIT a minute what yes N scale I have limited amount of space like a 12x12 train room OK OK KEEP THOSE VIDEOS COMING CHRIS GOD BLESS HAPPY RAILROADING THANKS 4 SHARING SORRY FOR POSTING IN ALL CAPS WE GET SO EXCITED WHEN TALKING ABOUT MODEL TRAINS BYE BYE ;-)
Like my dad always says this is a Rich man’s hobby
I actually ordered the legacy big boy 2 years ago but really wanted a vision line version to go along with my vision line challenger. It's also the very first running steam engine I've seen in person. So I figure I'll trade in my legacy big boy for the vision line. I also preorderd the Dreyfuss with the long coal tender and the Pennsy hippo with the long haul tender. Cannot wait! It's easily my favorite catalog lionel has come out with in a long while.
Sounds like you have a nice fleet on the way! Thanks for watching Cale
I wish you hadn’t brought it to my attention:(
I also REALLY liked the black and white early Disney cars…sooo cool and graphic. Still might order them.
The NYC E8 set and Dreyfus were on my list for sure. I’m Pennsy and NYC so that’s saves me a lot of money that would be otherwise going to purchase Big Boys :/
100-year train Disney set
You’re kinda insane
I would haft to agree with the pick
