i think 4014 and 90 both win in different ways. 4014's whistle displays the power and size of the engine, but that 90 whistle is just classic short line nostalgia
I agree a lot to me. 4014 is like one that is there to get your attention and to get out of the way. But 90 is one like maybe you would hear on a branch line like "Hey, I blank far away, so just to let you know."
I love the Strasburg 90! It took my breath away when first it running on your layout! The ghost whistle sound is awesome! I love all the steam engines that run on the Strasburg Railroad! Its Amazing!
Hey Chris I think I know why the Lionel brass hybrid strasburg 90 was delayed I believe when it was set to release it was still being worked on and they were still designing the model and making it and they were giving it a lot of detailed and they were working very hard to bring out a fine model and they sure succeeded.
strasburg 90 for the W because I’ve been to strasburg before and this whistle sounds exactly like the real thing. this might be the most prototypically accurate model lionel has ever made, and I absolutely love it
I picked up the stop gap version last year from train world. It’s the 2-8-0 consolidated Lionel legacy model that they made and does the job if you can’t afford this almost 2K model
You done a wonderful job on all your videos it keeps me going to watch the trains and yes your comments. The way you compare some engines to others makes you’re reviewing so much better. Soon I’ll be doing my video at the Washington State History Museum we set up on Sunday and run until Jan 1. 5 floors of trains my layout is at the entrance. I wish I could do a video as good as you
Wow, Chris, those are beautiful locomotives. Perhaps Lionel's most detailed models. Love the whistle and the cab detail! I am very glad you got them! As much as I like the 90's whistle, the Big Boy still has my vote for best whistle. Great video!!! Billl B.
@@RBPTrains Hey, Chris, that is very kind and you know I would appreciate your participation, but more than anything I want you to have fun with it. I know you are a busy guy with a lot on your plate. Just reading and responding to all of these comments would exhaust me. Just when and if you can. The challenge is doing well, but you know I and many others would enjoy your participation. Bill
They are both awesome locomotives. I have the 90 2000 model and the new Big Boy oil version. I love them both. Both whistles are great. Especially the Strasburg since Lionel recorded the real live sound and crew talk. The Big Boy whistle makes you feel the sheer size of the locomotive. Enjoy your new trains, I know I will.
Strasburg railroad 90 is getting its all of its boiler time and the green car that you were holding was the Presidential car and not the observation car. The Observation car is the Hello Dolly. The best whistle is the Union Pacific Big Boy 4014
both engines are winners in my book. Big boy has that awesome growling whistle they are both great engine's 90 sounds so real you can close your eyes and your in strausburg . Best place on the planet so far.
Ok. I have to say. Strasburg #90’s whistle is the champion in this battle against the 4014. The classic sound from that whistle is perfect and suits the locomotive very well.
One thing's for certain Chris, you're running your Strasburg 90 a LOT faster than the real one ever gets to run! Maybe one day Amtrak will let it romp on that Harrisburg line? 🤩 Anyway, I have to give the Big Boy top honors in the whistle battle, it's hard to beat that deep-throated steamboat roar! But on the other hand the Big Boy doesn't have a "Ghost Whistle!" 90's whistle is just fine for an engine of that vintage. Oh, instead of moving the toilet in that observation car you COULD put up a privacy curtain! 😳 It'd be a LOT easier and suit the purpose! (Maybe throw a few magazines in there too? ) Another fun video! Thanks for posting!
Well nothing can compare to a Big Boy whistle, however the 90 can hold it's own. I've been to Strasburg and saw the real one in action. It's an impressive sight.
Very nice. That is a beautiful model and the ghost whistle is very cool. It's nice to hear realistic crew talk. It would be nice for Lionel to use prototypical crew and dispatcher talk on all of their engines. Those of us in the industry would appreciate it. Maybe wishful thinking, but, who knows? Keep up the great videos and have a fine Christmas.
From what I have heard, Lionel has been spending more time with the roads to gather more specific sounds and dialogue so we may be getting some more features in that area (fingers crossed!). Thanks for watching and Merry Christmas to you!
Awesome Chris! It was definitely worth the wait! At first, 2 years ago, I wasn’t planning on getting it. But then I found out about it last month and I was able to get one! It’s definitely the realistic train I’ve seen from Lionel! It’s looks amazing! 😊🚂
The fact that the decapod is the smallest steam engine in your collection says a lot for the US railroads, Largest engine I got is the 0-10-0 and 2-8-2 Would love to get round to showcasing them in the future
Congratulations 🍾 on your acquisitions of two different versions of the famous 90! They are beautiful models. Look and sound fantastic. Long time coming with these models. I think Lionel killed it.
Chris, as we wrap up 2023, it seems that each successive video you do is little better than the previous. We're all having a good time on your channel. I don't think any engine could beat the Big Boy whistle but the Strasburg 90 has so many great features that it is almost in a class by itself. I've been to Strasburg several times and truly feel that Lionel train set is as good as being there (except that the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania sits right across the street from the real thing).
Great looking models Chris. The whistle is definitely unique. Has that excursion sound that says were going on a train ride. It kind of reminds me of the sound that a carnival pipe organ makes. It's really not fair to compare it to a Bigboy though. It's like comparing a stegosaurus to a Trex.
Strasbourg 90 whistle is likely heard over several mountain tops, but Big Boy has whistle blasts where some have reached as far as the North Pole especially at this wonderous, magical time of year, PJR😀
I think the Big Boy whistle sounds more like a horn on a ship than a train whistle. But I would have loved to have had either when I was playing with my Lionel train set back in the '60s.
I can see what you are saying. I was just showing my kids the horn feature on a Post War F3 diesel this evening under our tree and they thought it was the funniest thing ever, haha. Thanks for watching!
Well, Chris, the Big Boy and the 90 are two different animals. The Big Boy whistle wins out on dramatic effect, while the 90 whistle with the added echo feature is just brilliant. It's hard for me to compare the two. Since I grew up in the North East, the 90's whistle is certainly the most familiar sounding.
I'm a 'big steam' fan as well as I have several Lionel, MTH and 3rd Rail engines but my Mikado's are really my favorites. By the way, I love your red woodside passenger cars. Really super cool! One of these days, you should pull a 'Gomez Addams' when you have engines crossing over and under one of them beautiful bridges!!! Just kidding! 😂 Wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!
I heard there was a issue where they caught fire, at that time I was getting the trainworld exclusive one, it's a legacy but not the brass like this one so i was able to have that order completed but the brasses had an electronic issue supposedly
Fun fact: Strasburg can run two observation cars on their trains. The Philly and Reading 10 behind the engine as it’s a first class car and the Hello Dolly 68 being an open air car with an observation deck on the actual rear of the train. The baggage also goes near the front with the diner up in the front followed by the coaches then open air.
Another great video Chris. I think the Big Boy will always be the champion of the whistle battle. This is a nice looking and sounding engine. Great addition to your collection.
The big boy wins especially with regular whistle, the gohst whistle brings the competition closer though. As much as Lionel charges, all legacy engines should have road specific crew talk like MTH does for less money.
The Big Boy 4014 is definitely the winner of the whistle off with no flaws but the Strasburg, I don't know if you can tell or not but it has some electric scratch sound, meaning it has some scratchy sounds to it to where it doesn't sound natural like Big Boy 4014 does
The crapper in the passenger car has been done by Lionel before in the Pre War Statesman set . The toilet seat even lifted up and down too. So woop dee doo.

Excellent points!
I also agree. Cory Mears
90's whistle is beautiful, the Big Boy has a very powerful and dominant whistle. I honestly prefer 90.
What I love about this engine is the details. The hand rails, the whistle and the inside of the cab.

AWSOME Display Cris!!!!😛😁🤣😂😂❤🧡💜🤍🤟🤘👍👍🚂🚂
Love the 90 but the Big Boy whistle is still tops with me.
Super. I use to watch the #90 on the Great Western when I lived in northern Colorado. Hello from the Tracy Mountain Railway in Colorado. 💙 T.E.N.
P.S. I love #90's whistle, and I got to listen to the real thing. 💙 T.E.N.

Love your Trains and lay outs nice and go Big Boy UP lpve the whistle
I’m getting a Menards o scale train set for Christmas. Thank you Santa. Kitty says meow.
Glad to hear about your new train set and hanks for watching!
The sounds are incredible THE WHISTLE HAS ECHO the details are amazing I can’t believe this is Lionel
As for sheer ‘oomph’ the Big Boy’s whistle is still king but the Ghost Whistle feature is splendid and in a class by itself!
The echo on that whistle is just beautiful 👏
I’m getting UP 1988 for Christmas, love DCC with HO Scale, keep it up Chris!

Ohio love that firebox light and all the little can details it really pulls this engine together.
Last count it had 123 O locos, the Strasburg is by far the coolest cab, the details are awsome. I will be looking for one of these
I want a mini-Chris action figure on my layout. 😆👍🏻
I keep telling Bernard (with Mini Prints) to put the figurine on his Web store, haha!
That throaty T-Rex 🦖 roar of the big boy is hard to beat, but #90 gets high marks for nostalgic whistle sounds.
You just can’t beat that big boy whistle. The 90’s whistle is absolutely perfect for the engine, but I’ve got to give it to the big boy.
Both engines sound Great
Now that is a great model! I agree with others in the dialog that both whistles are unique and outstanding in different ways!
i love how hes always so happy

Big boy all the way, great engines Chris.

One of my favorite engines-right up there with NKP 765 and BB 4014!

I think 90 in its 1967 scheme is the best. I’m a sucker for white walls. Especially on locomotives
Yeah, the old Strasburg "egg" herald on the tender was oh-so-cool. I don't know why they don't use it anymore.
Ok. I have to say. Strasburg #90’s whistle is the champion in this battle against the 4014. The classic sound from that whistle is perfect and suits the locomotive very well.

yep, the whistle of 4014 big boy still reigns supreme compared to the 90
The 90 ghost whistle is amazing

Thank you SO much for pronouncing Strasburg correctly. Regards, a central Pennsylvanian.
Well nothing can compare to a Big Boy whistle, however the 90 can hold it's own.

Big boy sounds like a T rex in the Jurassic Park movie or Steven Spielberg took it from the real Big boy. Either way it sounds pretty cool.
I think the closet locomotive to beating 4014 in the whistle battle was n&w 1218. Now that was a tough one
