- I’ve got to say that these Pork Carnitas are one of my favorite recipes, I crave them, they are hearty and bursting with flavor. These Carnitas are easy to prepare and it’s a meal that will delight your family, they are great for entertaining and it’s something I love to prepare on weekends when friends or family come over. I hope you give them a try.

INGREDIENTS------------
3 1/2 lbs Pork Shoulder Butt
3/4 medium onion (large pieces)
7-9 Large garlic cloves
1 tsp dried thyme
1 tsp black pepper
1 tsp ground cumin
1 Tbsp Mexican Oregano (or regular oregano)
3 Bay leaves
1 Tbsp Salt
3/4 C. Hot water
Zest and juice of 1 orange
Zest and juice of 1 lime (dump half squeezed in pot only)
3/4 C. Cola
3/4 C. Whole milk
1 lb. Lard (2 cups)
SIDES
Corn or flour tortillas
Your favorite salsa
Guacamole
Chopped onions

This is a recipe I'm definitely keeping as we'll have plenty of company this fall and this will be truly be a hit. From a cooking site I subscribe to, in my inbox was an email for Carnitas, which I absolutely love. As soon as I saw that it called for Chinese 5 spice I said NO, no way am I going to put anything that tastes like licorice in my carnitas, I need a different recipe, something authentic. Well guess who came to mind a split second later? As usual Rachel, with flying colors you came through with a perfect recipe. Another memory fior me. My grandmother made them, I can see her by the stove, while I sat in the dining room. So delicious with her homemade corn tortillas. After her passing, my dad would buy the carnitas from the neighborhood carniceria. But they weren't the same as my grandma's. Thanks again Rachel, for your recipes from my childhood. OHH MER GERD.. THIS IS THE RECIPE! I followed this recipe to a T and it is perfection. This is amazing and I cannot believe all these ingredients came together this well. I’m not the biggest carnitas fan but it was requested by a family member so I obliged. This recipe has given me new hope in following a UA-cam video and hoping for the best.
