GAME: The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC

In the aftermath of Trails in the Sky's ending, Joshua has disappeared. After completing some training by the Bracer Guild to prepare for her new adventure, Estelle sets out to find him. Meanwhile Ouroboros, the secret organization that Weissman works for, begins a new shadowy plot in Liberl, causing trouble all over the country.

So, to lay out what Bleublanc did in the first game, as the game explained, he had been impersonating Dario the entire time, you can find the real Dario over at the bar in Manoria here in SC where he's driven himself to drink and having a mental breakdown, because everything in his life completely changed while he was gone on vacation and people keep insisting he was there and should know everything about what happened with the mayor, so he keeps trying to insist there must be another him.
Now, Bleublanc being Dario also explains something else, in FC you got a sidequest in which the candelabrum has been stolen from the mayor's house, everyone's confused on how that could have happened, but now we know, he was an inside man, and we got a peak of his disguise prowess at the end when he disguised himself as Portos to plant the final card. Another interesting aspect to that sidequest is that it ends with Joshua thinking about how weird it all was if the thief intended for it to be found anyway, almost like it was a test for Estelle and Joshua, especially with the final note saying "We will meet again. -Phantom Thief B", Estelle then says they'll probably never know. Cut to now, and we see he was only interested in testing Estelle because Joshua was with her, so he wanted to see what he saw in her. Another fun thing about that sidequest was, once you got to the end Joshua asked for permission to search the grounds for more clues, but Dalmore and Gilbert both refused under the guise of being happy with just getting the candelabrum back... but in reality they really did *not* want someone investigating the rest of the estate, especially with Dalmore's secret room where he was keeping some monsters.
So yeah, they did a lot of optional to see setup for Bleublanc in the first game, you would just never expect the kooky "Find things from my riddles" sidequest to be *super* important.

So remember how when Loewe was talking to Campanella about how Bleublanc had been in Liberl for a while? The Phantom thief quest in Ruan at Dalmore's estate in first chapter? yea that was this guy. This guy had been causing trouble since before you even officially met him a whole game ago.

43:35 One really cool detail about this: You can actually find the real Darios in the Manoria bar. He's been out of town since before FC, and drunkenly complains about how everything's gone to shit while he was gone.
Side note, during the phantom thief quest in FC, Bleublanc also impersonated Portos, the harbor chief, AKA the same guy who's running for mayor.

Honestly, one of the scariest parts of that interaction for me was when Sieg was frozen as well, just because he stopped IN MID AIR. It's ridiculously over the top, but still a lot of fun for Bleublanc to break reality like that.
I do like that Bleublanc initially doesn't seem that dangerous when he's just explaining the projections and then he catches the entire party off guard by chaining down all of their shadows. Like the party was kinda f**ked if Dorothy hadn't intervened. I think it does a great job at establishing that the members of Oroboros are not to be underestimated even if some of them don't appear to be all that dangerous initially. I also thought the way the team got bailed out was kind of clever.
You remember that phantom thief guy that made you solve a bunch of riddles in a sidequest in the last game? Yeah that was this guy.
The theme that plays when the Phantom thief is called "Enforcers" One of the best themes in this series, least in my opinion. Also Phantom thief BB was in the last game, not only as the butler but also a dockworker. He gave us a quest when we were last in this city, the search and find quest, trust me that won't be the last time we get a quest like that... *shudders*
As I understand, Blueblanc was not really trying to harm anyone (besides the group), because his objective was not mayhem, it was checking to see if the hologram worked and how well it did. Why does this matter, well, imagine you have never heard about the concept before and suddenly you see a hologram. A machine capable of creating lifelike 3d images out of thin air. The ghost part was Blueblanc being Blueblanc. What is scary is that now Ouroboros has a way to conjure any images they want to look real, even if they aren't. That's a huge issue for the country.
I’ve come to accept that I will never go to sleep at a reasonable time while this series is going on.

Can I take a moment to point out how fucking HEAT the theme of the Ouroboros members is? The buildup of Bleublanc slowly revealing his character/personality, reaching its crescendo as the guitar goes fucking hambone

Olivier and Bleublanc’s rivalry is actually so great!
Listening to your opening, I think you've really hit onto what makes this series so special to so many people. As a series, Trails likes to take its sweet time about getting to the point, but because of this slow burn we get so much time with the characters, not just the main cast but the side characters and NPCs, and we hear from them constantly in both the intense plot-heavy moments and the more lighthearted bonding moments. That ends up building an extremely strong cast and your investment in these characters gets so insanely high that you almost don't even care about the slow burn because "I just want to spend more time with everyone!" And this kind of effect carries on through every single game in this massive series.
On to the episode! I love how it turns out the only reason Estelle's been afraid of ghosts this chapter is because she wasn't sure what they might be able to do. Once she wakes up after seeing the "white shadow" for herself and finds out she just passed out from sheer shock, she instantly shifts from being afraid to "I'M GONNA PUNCH THAT DUMB GHOST IN HIS DUMB FACE!" That's why she's the best.
Maybe you remember having to hunt down the candelabrum from Mayor Dalmore's mansion, which was stolen by "Phantom Thief B" - maybe that name rings a bell now? He was actually hanging out right next to it as Dario and remarking on it in the NPC round right before it goes missing. You can also meet the real Dario in Chapter 1 of this game, in the Manoria inn. He just came back from vacation and he's super freaked out by everyone talking about the mayor's arrest as well as hearing he himself was supposedly around for it. It's a great piece of foreshadowing!
One more thing - when you start Chapter 2 you should go back to where you met Bleublanc and mess around with the projector he left down there. Some fun stuff you can do with it!
Bleublanc, or Phantom Thief B, actually has a weirdly large amount of foreshadowing. While Campanella mentioned the Phantom Thief had been here for a while, there are plenty of hints not just in this game, but in FC as well. The quest with finding his cards to find the mayor's treasure is the most obvious. He showed his master of disguise abilities when he disguised himself as Portos at the end of the quest. Rather abnormal for a quest that connected to nothing at the time, no?
As for disguising himself as Dario, that has been built up quite a bit on the side. In Manoria's Inn, you can find the real Dario. He's a drunken wreck who lost his job as steward with the mayor's arrest along with the public believing he was an accomplice to Mayor Dalmore. He was always outside his room after all. He proclaims his innocence and says he was out on vacation, but Bleublanc's disguise meant his legitimate alibi was ignored.
But as for the most insane touch, Dario actually goes missing for a brief moment. It was when Clem went to accuse the Ravens of setting the orphanage ablaze. This is the last story beat before the theft of the Mayor's treasure. So this twist was actually planned even back then. Even though a player would only catch that if they replayed the game knowing of the twist.
If FC didn't have many memorable boss fights, SC absolutely slaps you in the face with memorable boss fights and villains left and right. This game is insanely packed to the gills, especially compared to the first one.
I'm glad you recognized the quality of the dialogue in this game. Trails in the Sky is legendary for having incredible writing and characterization. It's kinda what makes the series stand out amongst its competitors.
So by now, you’ve probably noticed that the Enforcers are all numbered. An interesting detail is that each Enforcers number also corresponds to the major Arcana of the Tarot. In Bleublanc’s case, he’s number 10, meaning he’s the Fortune Arcana. Fortune is often the symbol of changing circumstances. Which is fairly appropriate for a Phantom Thief
And Joshua was death, pretty fitting for an assassin and joshua's story where death can also mean a pretty big change in someone's journey.

So you touched upon it at the start of this episode when you was gushing about the character writing and dialogue in these games.
It’s about what makes Estelle such a fantastic protagonist, her empathy. She really is the glue that holds the whole party you meet in these games and it’s also her greatest strength, yes greater than being hilariously sassy and liking to hit things with her big stick.

If you really don't think Bleublanc isn't a threat, think instead of what would have happened if Estelle, Agate, and Olivier weren't there. He started all this while they were away. He probably intended to lure Kloe the princess down into his little lair to kidnap her. The whole ghost thing was meant to seem harmless enough that she would go but scary enough that she would go with as few people as possible.

In regards to 1:02:06, there were actually many instances where people called Joshua out for hiding his true strength, and a few instances wherein he refereed to such himself as well. Along with him being able to seriously threat Cassius at least from Cassius's account. along with himself having a number of tactics and skills for example him slipping a sedative to Estelle quickly.
Safe to say, we also don’t care about the plot moving slowly either. This game is all about those small moments.
Like, for example, how Dorothy just does stuff that absolutely works completely by accident. More of those to come too. There's a reason why Dorothy is the Grandmaster theories have been all over the fan base for so long. She does stuff that randomly works way too often for that to be a coincidence.
*Bleublanc and Olivier casually get into a conversation about "beauty"*

So about the flash stuff.
Bleublanc first increased the torch's size so that their shadow got bigger and easier to target with his knives.
When dorothy used her flash it "reseted" the shadows and the flames were already smaller, once the camera's flash was over, their shadow weren't hit by the knives anymore.
When you get to Zeiss, Emma at the hotel is still a good NPC to chat with whenever you get the chance to. There's also a certain someone at Sanktheim Gate that you DEFINITELY should check in with every time NPCs update. You'll know which one when you meet him, trust me...
Olivier: The search for Joshua is my mission as a hunter of love.
Meanwhile:
Don: You okay kid? You just got really pale there.
Joshua: I sense a great evil is drawing closer
God I love the enforcer theme. Its unlike anything you've heard so far and even with his goofy tone you realize that shit has gotten real. The guitars go hard.
You can meet Dalmore´s actual former butler in Manoria Village, he is distraught about what happened and drinking because he is so confused that people say he was there during the whole major incident when he wasn´t.
Can we just take a moment to note how good the voice for Bleublanc is? Nico really acted his heart out in some of those lines, nailed the ham.
I find it funny how you mentioned how Bleublanc was like a Scooby Doo villain but remember, he is an enforcer. Using Joshua as an example as a young child he almost killed Cassius, a legendary top class bracer. Bleublanc is a full grown adult. And going off his number you know there are multiple of these Cassius level monsters. Ouroboros is very scary.
Fun fact: the words on Bleublanc’s cards are actually Japanese spelled in Greek letters (with some letters like ω and ι used for their shape instead of their sound). It basically says: Hello, this is Nihon Falcom. Thank you for playing Eiden (the Legend of Heroes) VI. We will be very happy if you enjoy the game.

Is funny how IGN recently wrote an article how Trails Thorough Daybreak copies takes inspiration from Persona 5, while forgetting Blueblanc who came before cat thieves and even Blueblanc is just inspired by
Maurice Leblanc fictional work Arsène Lupin what came out in 1905.
This game came out in 2006, the same year as Persona 3.

Enforcer No. X Blueblanc is one of my FAVORITES! So happy that we are finally here. Also yes, he was the thief that was also mentioned during the first game where he stole from the previous mayor, mayor Dalmore. The Phantom Thieve B. Was also mentioned at the very beginning of the game, after you finished the tutorial, during the conversation between Campanella, Loewe and Weissman. During that conversation they also named dropped the code names for the other Enforcers who are currently in Liberl.
Also the inspiration for Phantom Thieve B. As well as for other characters like Joker from Persona 5 comes from the fictional story writer
Maurice Leblanc who wrote the story: Arsène Lupin in 1905.

Been super, super sick these past few weeks, and this has been my comfort series. Really glad you didn't actually take that inter-game break.
I was absolutely positive after Sky FC that he was going to take a break. Glad I was wrong.
What Bleublanc did is called Kagenui/ Shadow Sewing, and it's a real technique. In fiction it's often shown like this, but in reality it's accomplished when you throw a knife or something to somebody's pant leg and bind them there.
Well, BleuBlanc is a notorious thief, which makes him a villain at least in that way. You've already had a Bracer quest where he used riddles on cards to find the lost candelabra (in Ruan!)
The shadow thing is more that bleublanc heightened the torches on the side of the room to make the shadows longer for an instant, and then knife pinned the shadows to the ground freezing them like that.
The flash wiped the shadows, and the torches were burning normally again so when the shadows were cast after the flash, the knives were just stuck on the floor and the shadows didn't reach.
I respect that they did all this with this art and character models, but its pretty subtle if you aren't comparing shadow lengths and looking at the tiny knives.
I would say I enjoyed the Sky Trilogies more than the FF7 Remake/Rebirth. Evenif they are older games, the writing and characters of Trails in the Sky is incredible and I played it this year.

Going from Sky Trilogy full voiced to Cold Steel where characters just aren't voiced in the middle of a scene is wild.

I don't know if the detail about Kloe going up against Richard was actually because of you taking her to the final battle (I can't remember because it's been almost a literal decade since I played this), but later games DO include dialogue changes based on what it read from the previous game's completed save file. So I would not put it past them to have started this early.

I can't tell you how happy I am to finally see Nico reach Blueblanc and hear the Enforcer theme for the first time. One of the best soundtracks in this game!

"Cures lowered statuses" means, like, "STR Down" and other such statistics.
They really know how to introduce the Enforcers. Keep in mind that this is only their second on screen appearance and he sicced a giant robot that is more powerful than the final boss of the first game TO SHOW MERCY to the main characters as he then demonstrates that he could easily kill them later.

i love how Nico & I are almost in sync. because the other day, i was talking about last episode in discord that's headed by a trails fangirl, and i made a scooby doo joke about his plot, and then Nico today made a scooby doo joke.

So every Enforcer of Ouroboros goes by a specific number and in-universe, we have yet to recieve a reason or meaning for the number system.
However the writers explained that the numbers are meant to refer to the arcana and that each Enforcer is represented by one of the tarot either through personality or the nature of their arc.
Blueblanc is no. 10, aka The Wheel of Fortune - symbolic of luck and of how life has just as many ups as it does downs.

Nico if you remember there was a quest in fc where an antique of mayor dalmore was stolen by a phantom thief B and you had to chase down calling cards to get it back.
Also, hid ability to disguise himself was shown when the dock master was impersonated when they were following his clues.
And him impersonating the butler explains how he got access to the mayor's mansion to steal that item you tracked down in that quest.

Funny little thing they did with Chloe’s Kaempfer Craft, it no longer does damage like it did in FC. It’s main use was always it’s stat debuffs cause this is chloe were talking about but it’s amusing they went out of there way to change it.
Speaking of Stat debuffs, that’s what S-tablets get rid of. Strength down, speed down, etc. which was fittingly shown off by the monster slapping Chloe when you asked lol 37:09
Also hell yeah the Ouroboros theme absolutely slaps! Gotta love how hammy Blueblanc is.
Plot device aside, this was quite an interested development, kinda surprised how Nico didn't say anything about how great that song was when the phantom thief showed up.
43:50 This also means that this guy was definitely the phantom thief from theside quest in the first game. The one that you nearly cuaght but got away becuse he disguised himself.
What happens when you get punched in the face by Estelle?

Funny you would mention the localization because there is a whole story about how difficult it was and how unlikely it was to actually make it here. A true miracle. I suggest watching the Matt Mcmuscle video on the subject. It's spoiler free and talks about the release schedule and stuff.

Nico, have you forgotten these games are all voice acted with the EVO mod? Sure it's in Japanese, but the voice acting is incredible. I wished you experience the Japanese voice acting even if it's for a single let's play video

Your statement at the beginning of the video is wonderful and accurate.
The lack of voice acting is kind of a double-edged sword. On one hand, voice acting is a nice creature comfort that we're used to in many modern RPGs, and it enhances the drama, emotion, and immersion of the narrative.
From another perspective, when writers and localizers are designing dialogue while knowing it won't be voiced, they can be a little more "out there" with word choice, and that can go a long way in giving certain characters personality and adds a unique layer of charm to the game as a whole.
I think subconsciously if you were to write dialogue that you know will eventually have to come out of someone's mouth, it comes out a little more "standard." In later games I think there is a noticeable difference between how characters talk in voiced scenes vs. how they talk during non-voiced NPC sweeps.
Just if you don´t remember, Phantom Thief B appeared in the first game, in a quest about a stolen object, where he give you hints and riddles to find the stolen object
Blueblanc is a really fun character and his rivalry with Olivier being great.
So…you know that feeling you get when you realize an iceberg is much larger beneath the water surface than it initially appeared? You’re going to start feeling that way about Falcom’s writing.
I love the chapter climax dungeon theme in this game. It’s so soothing.
"Visions" is super underrated. Doesn't help that it pretty much never plays again, though.
