I am a two time verified buyer of the RE980AS. I run them on my 2009 Volvo C30 T5 R-Design. I bought and installed both sets at Tire Rack in South Bend. I previously ran multiple sets of the RE960AS. These tires have very distinct advantages and one major disadvantage.
PROS: Fantastic dry traction, EXCELLENT dry cornering capability, and their ability to retain their roundness over time. These tires also have a ”decent” wet traction up until the tire is at half tread depth. Once they get close to 5/32nds or less the wet traction is quite poor. Hydroplaning and “wiggling” on wet pavement becomes an issue below 5/32nds.
CONS: Horrific snow traction. These are NOT All-season tires in ANY way, I don’t care WHAT the Bridgestone rep tells you. These are absolutely worthless in the snow even when new. Do not under any circumstances install these on a car that will be driven in snow. You’ve been WARNED. My RE960AS tires had the same issue. These should never be installed on a car that is to be driven regularly in the snow.
EDIT: But, if you’re like me and only drive the car in three seasons, these are absolutely fantastic tires. I have never run the 980+. I will be buying my third set from Tire Rack this year and will give the + a try. BTW, my winter car is a 2002 BMW 330xi that I run the dedicated Blizzak snow tires.
Man, I’m glad they’ve FINALLY focused on the old RE980AS complete incompetence in snow. I’ve had two sets and was finally going to walk AWAY from the 980 simply due to that. But, hearing this here today has convinced me that maybe I should give the 980+ a chance at redeeming its predecessors super bad snow reputation. Because I absolutely love the tires on dry and wet. They were so bad in the snow I bought a separate winter beater for winter just to avoid driving my nice car in the snow on those previous model 980s.
I have the original RE 980 A/S on my Mercedes benz E320, and I noticed a reduction in gas Mileage ⛽ it is quite with a smooth ride, but all and all I give it a 6 on a scale of 1 to 10
TEST REQUEST: Please test the new "Nokian Tyres Outpost AT" and the new "Nokian Tyres Rotiiva AT Plus". They both look amazing. Full all weather mtn peak/snowflake 4 season tires, that also work in the summer, that have 60k mile warranty??? Test them!!!
Right. tire Rack needs to test some Nokian tires for sure.
They are cutting way back on their testing and winter tests are gone.

Please help. My 2017 VOLVO XC60 T6 R design uses 255/45/20 105V XL tires. I recently purchased a set of Falken wildpeak a/t 245/50/20 102V SL tires. Will these work on my Volvo since their SL vs XL?
Yes they will work. It really only matter when you start filling the car up to the roof and speeding. Youre already going down in weight from 105 to 102. Going from 255 to 235 is concerning option but thats really it.
Still far behind the Michelin Pilot Sport AS 4.
New tire category request: Winter compound with 0 snow capability. I need want to drive my sports car in the snow, but I would like to be able to drive it on dry, under 40 degree days.
I made the mistake of going up a tiny bit from the 225 40 18 to the 235 40 18 without realizing the were for some reason about 4 pounds heavier!!! The back was 255 35 18 and that weight isn’t even listed! Coming from tires that were only 23 pound the difference is huge! If you just drive normal sedan like a 200t you will notice! I’m very disappointed I shopped around and I was excited to try these and for some reason I jus assumed but the title of “ultra high performance” I didn’t even check the weight until my wife drove it and notice immediately and that’s my wife noticing this. Not hisar about the speed but also going to effect fuel economy and extra west and tear from pushing that extra rotating mass . I’m going to sell them anyone interested? Lol!!!
Bridgestone really needs to spend more money on R&D. The RE980AS+ is last place in dry and wet, last place in winter performance as well, even though it was a major design focus. The performance just doesn’t justify the cost of the tires.
You’re the only one who has this sentiment on these, where did you get your info from??
Bridgestone beat out Continental DWS6+.
It’s funny you say this because Bridgestone actually outspends every other manufacturer on r and d aswell as molds/ factories equipment ect.. Michelin is close 2nd and everyone else is far far behind
That's weird the Tire Rack the Bridgestone RE980AS+ slightly beat out the Continental DWS + which were excellent tires on my infinity but not great longevity dry roads not as good as the Bridgestone potenza re980as+. Michelin pilot sport was also beat out in dry and wet.
While it’s not first in the dry and wet, it exceeds in the winter aspect. IDK where you got your observation from, but it’s pretty incorrect.
Not impressed with the wear. Two seasons and 30000km and they have one season left in them. From cry from 80000km.
Is that the 980as or 980as+?
Bought them in May of 2021 and on the car from April till October and when I put the snows on last fall the two on the right side wore evenly across almost to the wear bars. Left side a little better. But no where near what they claim for mileage. I do about 400k a week give or take.

Agreed. I’ve had two sets of the RE980AS and both sets were very low on the tread wear longevity scale. I’ve had to buy new sets every two years.
I had these on my car for 2 months. Returned them and got yokohama. Second set of bridgestone i have disliked. Never again buying bridgestone.
