    That looks so very comfortable! It's an actual upcycle with very little to buy, and that makes me happy! So SO many of these are basically: "Sad couch + $500 worth of stuff + technical knowledge that we won't show you on the video, + some work my brother's wife [a professional couch maker] did reframing the whole thing + super expensive fabric that she just had laying around her professional shop where she and her employees make furniture and they attached it + three throw pillows @ $120 EACH that my sister picked out = completely DIYd couch, see how EASY it is?!! Oh, and I even picked up these feet from another couch that was at an antique co-op, and only paid $70 each for them! I did it all on my own!!"
    THIS DIY is real and for those of us who have about $10 to spend! Thank you so much for the video, and for showing people what one really can do with some elbow grease and the willpower to actually do it!! Thank you, great video!!!!

      I get this! I think the difference is that various people have different ideas about what is expensive. Having 6 children, mine is on the more frugal end. ;) Sounds like I'm in good company! Thanks for sharing your ideas with me!! I'm honored by your compliments!

      You are kind. I have an old davenport which I'd just LOVE to do up the fancy way, but the main problem I have with it is that it's not as comfortable as it looks. (Also, people don't stuff my mailbox with money, but that's an altogether different issue. [But if you know the solution, I'm all eyes and ears!]) This video is where I will be stopping when I finally get to do that beautiful beast, because I'm guessing that just maybe a bit more liberal application of foam will alleviate that 'un-comfiness'! You have a lovely, lovely day, and while you'd already gained a subscriber, you've also gained a fan who will be telling her friends and family about your channel. I'm going to go check out some more of your videos...take care!! :-)

      Ended up using an old foam mattress we had at home, about 10cm thick and using the old filling to fill out the front, hide my uneven cutting and make it a bit softer. Perfect support for my husband and durable enough for my 2 year old jumping all over the couch. Works great!

    It looks terrific! But to be honest, this was a quality piece of furniture to begin with. The fabric on it alone is an expensive grade. ( I've sold furniture for 24 years) The lesson is to always buy the best you can possibly afford because in the long run it will last! And if you can't afford a more expensive well-made sofa, go to a thrift store! They have them there all the time for a fraction of the cost of a new one. Construction and materials matter. Especially with an active family.

    A mild, but effective cleaning solution for surface cleaning upholstered surfaces that can't be removed and laundered in a washing machine: in a small pale: 1 quart of hot tap water, 2 tablespoons of ordinary liquid hand soap, 2 tablespoons of white vinegar. Sop up some of this liquid with a clean terry cloth rag and ring it out. Scrub off the soiled areas on the arms and backs, etc. I have found it works extremely well and on my sofa, does not affect the dye in the fabric, but suggest testing a concealed spot first before you proceed further. Oh, this is for cloth upholstery, but it'd probably work on vinyl. I don't know about leather.

      We did this but used washing soda instead of vinegar and rigged a scrubbing pad to attach to a drill. Bc scrubbing by hand was taking F O R E V E R. Worked as well as a professional steam cleaner if not better!
      I should add we had to do the whole couch... arm to arm, front to back and everything in between. Took up every toddler stain and pen/marker scribble and it looked as nice as the day we bought it.

    Can I do this for a sofa that doesnt have removable cushions? However it does have a zipper to remove the inside foam cushions. I know it would be a tad bit more difficult

    • @Patternedforhome
      @Patternedforhome  5 років тому

      Great question! I would say yes. If the cushions can't be removed, you can scrub them really well or use an upholstery attachment to clean things. If there is a zipper, you can add foam or stuffing. I would imagine that it might be more difficult to get the exact sizes of the foam and to make it straight, but it seems doable. Wishing you success!

    Comfy couches are worth a recycle. Couches today are full of chemicals.
    Great tips I will try. ThankU.

      Elizabeth Armendariz, I just wanted to say THANK YOU for this kind comment. Truly. In fact, it helped me to decide to become a voice over artist, which I had been considering. Here's my first demo for anyone who'd like to see it. I am sincerely grateful.

      The narration voice and music so reminded me of the Desparate housewives show.

    I would also go on Amazon and buy a couch saver. The thing that you lay on the couch to save the springs. I just bought one waiting on it .

    PLZ, anyone know what to spray on back oh upholstery fabric to keep it from stretching out? I told the kids to buy uph. fabric that doesn’t stretch or give in after someone sits on it. Well, you guessed it!
    Suggestions please and thank you.

      Oh! I'm so sorry to read that this has happened to you Sandy. I don't know of any spray that helps fabric not stretch. I hope that someone else might though. Best wishes as you figure that out.

      Thank you. Free suggestion was to get a thin iron on backing. Works great. I assume you don’t handle situations like this. Thanks for time.

    What is the make of this sofa? I have a chair and ottoman but can’t find a matching sofa.

      I just turned it over and took off cushions, but can't seem to find info on the make or manufacturer. Sorry about that!

    What size mattress topper did you use? My sofa is almost the same size as yours.

      Hi Brandon! If I remember correctly, I purchased 1 queen mattress topper with the hopes that it would be enough, but it wasn't, so I purchased a second queen sized one as well. I hope your couch turn out great!

    I own the complete set like this, and the throw pillows are much worse then the seat cushions. Were you able to fix them or did you just toss them? I'm going to sell my set because I've already bought a replacement set, but wanted to spruce it up a bit without breaking the bank. Your solution to the saggy tired feel looks great and I may even do a little of this for my old set but the pillows are really what makes mine look sad, any advise?

      @Patternedforhome  6 років тому

      I did end up tossing mine. I agree that they were much much worse then the actual cushions! If you sew, I have a SUPER simple way to make throw pillows: ua-cam.com/video/JMyN_8nSUQw/v-deo.html Of course, you can always just buy new ones.
