The history of psychology is very much rooted in experimentation and a constant struggle towards legitimacy. The way you describe the current state of polyvagal theory reminds me of the era before Freud where psychologists didn't even know what to call themselves. It took decades of rigorous experimentation before the field of psychology crystallized into something more than an extension of philosophy, emerging as a science by its own merits.
Thank you Irene, for taking the time to record & publish this video! Our culture is in such a rush… quality stuff takes time! Grateful to you & your team for your passion & dedication. And for sharing your wisdom with us 🙏
Thank you for encouraging us to be discerning by using the metrics of credentials and experience. It’s so difficult to navigate who to trust, especially if you are vulnerable and desperately seeking help. You offer so much and speak with confidence, not arrogance, in what you do without disparaging others. You seem to genuinely care and do your best to offer so much insight by providing videos like these. I think you put yourself out there to criticism which is very brave. Thank you Irene for speaking to this important topic.
I'm glad you mentioned "spidy sense" because I instantly had a physical reaction to your carefulness, thoroughness and thoughtfulness. And as I started to grasp the overall picture of what your teaching, how it is a whole new language, I would say a whole new world, I realized that this is the real work of not just the world of healing but spirituality itself.
Thank you for speaking about this important topic Irene and thank you for making your programms afforadble and doing your work with love for us! I am so grateful to be your student! 🙏 🌊💙🌊

Your work is so grounded and important. Thank you for speaking on this. I’ve been in SBSM for a few years and it’s only this round that my body is truly shifting out of functional freeze. This work can not be biohacked and is so individual. Thank you for being someone that people can trust and look to for guidance and not the “guru”

That's why I continue to learn from you after sbsm, that's why I trust you, and I'm glad I found you years before all these new nervous system influencers could discourage me from a subject that is now often mentioned in one sentence with westernized (and often narcissist) spirituality practices or biohacking. Thanks for your continued effort Irene!!
Same issue in other areas of health, biological dentistry for one. Energy healing etc the same. I feel mainly society ‘buys’ with their eyes and what is the best financial option, not by the quality, depth or what they feel, because maybe they are so disconnected from themselves and with the online world they do not know the real from the illusion. I am 60 years of age next year. I have no savings, no inheritance and the wrong time of life to be taking out a loan I can never repay. I wish I had the knowing I have now decades ago, from continuing on my own titrated trauma healing. It is frustrating for those in this chapter of life who have much life experience from walking this path and want to make a difference in the world, now we know the steps that need to be taken for healing. Thank you for sharing this important message. Love from the UK 🙏
You are such an amazing person 😊! Thank you for this video! I'm so glad I made the time to listen to this. You've explained everything in quite detail. I appreciate this. I've learned a lot about your life and how hard you had to work to get where you're at right now. I'm learning so much about the science and how the other puzzle pieces fit together. Keep up the good work. Your soul is very dedicated to this line of work. You help others grow through the healing process.

You're a special person who is doing powerful work. I bet if you asked most 5 year olds they could come up with a better system than the way things are run now. We work with what we got.
Great video with some great reminders. I'm a new Embodiment Coach and have found nervous system work to be the most effective for me personally. Maybe its different for others but the people I have worked with all said it helped them to some degree. I'm still studying and researching like crazy. I definitely dont want to mislead anyone with my words or my work. This isnt a one way kind of thing but it is helpful. And yes, love that you also shout out your mentors. I do this too. Ive been learning this stuff (not JUST somatic work, spiritual theories, self care, self love, self development etc for 12+ yrs.) I wouldn't be where or who I am without theyre help trainings and support and wisdom. It's a ripple effect.
I am very grateful that you are addressing this topic /reaction and the thorough way you share your experience and convictions . I , am doing your “free” resources , as much as possible in this chaotic period ( 65-69 yrs . Of age ) turning 70 next month - and am asking for the money to do your 21-Day tune-up as my main gift from family … I have been fortunate - in following my genius / instincts and inner spiritual guidance - to have persisted and reached out to mentors /teachers trained by Moshe’ Fedenkrais ; Jane Brown and others - and a trauma informed perspective while the research was being developed in the last 40-45 years . Blessings upon you and those who have the resources and wish to make this more and more accessible to more and more humans ! Healing our own trauma is indeed the greatest gift we can give to make this World 🌎 a better place for ALL of Life !❤🎉
Another human being who CANNOT afford these luxuries. Oh the irony - no wonder we are stuck in functional freeze. When we are now left with so many dis-eases we cannot afford to even begin healing from them / trauma. I am on disability also, not that it helps access anything.
I completely agree. The people who need healing the most cannot afford treatment. I've been searching for answers for over twenty years while living in poverty struggling to survive each day. I don't think anybody truly wants to help us. I'm giving up.
Yes! It is so disheartening when you come across something that really speaks to you and that you know is exactly what you need, only to find that it is completely out of reach financially.
Irene has enough free content to make a start. This is the most complete nervous system trauma channel and information available on the internet at no cost!!! We are lucky, many health professionals and podcasts are not this well informed with the ability to verbalize how it intertwines with EVERY single aspect of mind/ body, social engagement, family, all aspects of the human mammalian life. I could go on...go through all the content again and again. Investigate the other experts she refers to. You can definitely get some real help here! I KNOW it's not enough...I'm also one of those that cannot afford the health costs and healing modalities I need. I can say I have received more benefit from Irene Lyon than all of the doctors hospital and specialists that ARE covered by ohip in Canada 🇨🇦
I am from India . I want to do your course. I am in functional freeze. Is it possible to do your course and also want to become a practitioner of nervous system work. Now I am doing your all your work from free resources, everyday
@hafsa9105, Jen here from Team Lyon. Great to hear that Irene's teachings resonate with you, and that you're using her free resources and are interested in becoming a practitioner yourself. Some people do this work for their own growth and learning, others do join with the intention of becoming practitioners. Irene is actually offering a practitioner training for the first time this year, and SmartBody SmartMind is a pre-requisite. Here's some info if you'd like to learn more: irenelyon.com/scientuitive-practitioner-track/
Just a thing I noticed is a dissatisfaction with big pharma leads to "try these essential oils". This is bothersome for me because I had a therapist "Western medicine can't help you, take tumeric and meditate" this ties to the guru situation because she kept going on retreats (not sure of the organization). That's my personal experience with someone becoming messy over a guru

what I don't like or understand is anyone needing to 'diss' other neuroplasticity programs in order to bolster their own- why is it necessary to talk about how DNRS is an incomplete top down system for example? It has worked for many people with complex illnesses- I've seen the success stories in there and worked with the recovered coaches. And for those it wasn't enough for or the right approach for, they are adults who can move on and find what works for them. I end up getting dysregulated when I come across teachers who go out of their way to make sure people know programs like DNRS are incomplete while theirs is "the one." It is so tiring to me. Let one's program and work stand on its own- and people will find what they need.
Thank you. I appreciate you speaking this topic. Let me ask you something. I struggle with whether or not I believe anybody can really help you with something like this online. I think it is something that really depends on physical presence and sometimes on being able to put your hands on someone. Could you tell me why am right and why am wrong, in your opinion? Thank you.
@NEbluefire, Jen here from Irene's Team. I've been involved with Irene's work for over 8 years and have witnessed many people heal and create powerful transformation working in this way. Much of this work revolves around one's connection with oneself, and both the 21 Day Nervous System Tune Up and SmartBody SmartMind offer clear, potent, guided experiences to support people in deepening into this connection. In both offerings there are trained nervous system practitioners who also educate by answering questions, and in SBSM there are also live calls and a robust community. If you're curious about SBSM but aren't sure, you might consider trying to for yourself and you might be surprised! You also have 30 days to request your money back if it feels like it's not a fit for you.
Thank You, answer to my internal questions!! And I have found the self proclaimed gurus! May I ask as someone 57 with a good understanding, intelligently but not feeling. Where would you suggest I begin with Somatic healing? I am potentially creating the Trauma Overwhelm for not starting at the beginning? ❤
why are you even considering taking these kind of comments serious? to me it feels like wanting to provoke on purpose. comments like these are all over the internet, so on your work as well. i just love your work and i don't need a guru, would never think of you as a guru. see you on day 10/21 🌈
Who can heal others didn't depend on the high price of education! Never loose hope because you not have the money for somatic trading. Certification means nothing, if those trainers/professionals can't help for real with their arts.
Agreed Irene, thanks for sharing this! I wonder how you will take into account other people’s background/training & experience when they want to train with you? Perhaps if they have a foundational background in mental health/trauma work, the body, etc…that want to incorporate new skills or tie it altogether but are not starting from scratch as far as stress biology, the mind-body connection and nervous system. Will there be options for people like that?
@ashleybaugh3417, Jen here from Irene's Team. There is an application process for the practitioner training that Irene is offering and my understanding is that the students in the current training have a wide variety of backgrounds. Participation in SmartBody SmartMind is a prerequisite, so everyone in the training has a solid grounding in nervous system work. Irene, how might someone go down your path of study after being in the humanities? I am reading the field (Porges, etc.) but I'd like to go back to school for it. I've thought of doing an MSW and then a PhD in Psych, but I'm not sure. Thanks! (Also, this is super helpful, wholesome, and healing because I've experienced some really bad stuff in the art world and "spiritual" spaces.)
Irene, I have been listening to you for quite a while, and sometimes - surprisingly often - you speak about topics of which you lack authority to judge. You give your work and perspectives an exclusivity and prominence they haven't. Your takes on metaphysical and spiritual matters are often far from initiated and succinct. So, from my point of view you often speak like a guru even if you are not saying you are one, while the truth is you have expertise in one important field of the human experience called life on earth. People have had deep knowledge of the nervous system/fascia/ether/emotional energies in many esoteric and metaphysical circles around the world for many centuries.
Fair to say, humans have not faced this level of dysregulation in history before as a result of modern living and all previous generations’ trauma responses stacking up over the years. You mention this info has been around, and yet we are collectively the sickest we’ve ever been… Something is missing and Irene’s work approaches from a different angle, while acknowledging those who precede her. May the refining of these truths always continue on so we can all benefit as we increase our understanding. 🙏
@@kizz1111 Yes, fair to say. My observations and points are valid. She sometimes speaks without actual knowledge and humility. It is obvious she haven't real understanding of the esoteric fields. Peter Levine, Bessel van der Kolk, Gabor Maté, to name a few, certainly have another depth and wisdom regarding the topic I am raising here.
It's the 80-20 rule. There will be many very well educated that aren't great practitioners, It's alive in every profession. Then within the 20% there's another 80-20 for those of us actually continuing education and case consults etc. At the end of the day people find who they are meant to connect with. At the end of the day those marketing without the education or efficacy will be seen as ineffective. It's been happening throughout the ages...not a new issue. Always go to the source whenever possible. Like the Peter Levine's. They have established institutions with scholarships available.
It could be! Or maybe a claim of knowing this things by some, I noticed that pretence ,and yes you did tell about not taking it or practice concinstacy. Guru, a person who passing a gift or teaching a knowledge of past or not known. Ahh, yeah, I like the way you teach how we should react, sure people know, I respect what the recipient owner!!! Then he benefits
Okay, I do try to find funding on these work, I just remembered a private funding I consulted and I think I will go again for interview again, because they can only fund studies or schooling. I'll hear from them
@briechilli4496, Jen here from Irene's Team. I haven't heard Irene speak much about Sarno's work. I am a Nervous System practitioner familiar with both Irene's work and Sarno's work. My understanding is that for some people who already have a good dose of foundational nervous system regulation and capacity on board, engaging with Sarno's approach can help them to create noticeable shifts and relief by offering them a way to connect with and express held experiences (and in particular, what we call Healthy Aggression in this work). And some may experience lasting results from this approach. And, for those that don't get lasting relief or who don't already have foundational nervous system regulation and capacity on board, the nervous system work will likely be needed and transformative as Sarno's work was not intended for those purposes. If you want to hear about people's experiences with the nervous system approach that Irene teaches, you might check out here recent video with Darla about how she defied medical odds: irenelyon.com/2024/08/18/defying-all-medical-odds-via-nervous-system-healing-darlas-story/ You can also find more success stories here (some are pretty uplifting!): ua-cam.com/video/SZKBcDpsy2w/v-deo.html
((Also there are quite some "Polyvagaly" starstruck and since quite some time "Porges/ Dana- informed Trauma- Experts" in my country... (That one can feel actually would like to identify themselves as- and be treated by the suffering like some kind of "guru".); That DO NOT like the new very quick rise of your work and abondant material througt the internet and trauma- suffering individuals' capacity of trauma- informing, feeling and discerning for themselves..))
As a counterbalancing voice, I honestly think you're overreacting (misattuning?) a bit to both the (probable) intention of the original comment, and the truism that people on the internet are generally sloppy with their words and thinking. Dont get -too- hung up on the word "guru", which actually means "remover of darkness" in Sanskrit. Sure, the word has been bastardized and means something else in our modern Western context. Sure, you and everybody else out there doing this work in sincerity are not trying to be Gurus. No true healer wants to be a cult of personality, and I dont think it's worth your time to react to that framing, because people will project whatever they're going to project on whatever & whoever they want to. To the original comment in question -- seems to me that the intention was the "Feels like war" part more than the "Somatic gurus" part. And the time you've spent separating yourself from a cult of personality (I'm about 9 min in so far) could just as easily been used to address this "feels like war" part, which I dont know if you do later in the video. Irene, for what it's worth, you come across as a well trained, humble, integrated, sincere practitioner of these arts. You come across as part of a larger community, which I know you are. You come across as both a unique, but not grandiose voice helping to teach and clarify in this noisy information landscape. So thank you for all that you do, both on camera and off. And, my personal opinion is to not be too sensitive to what amounts to the ocean of ignorant people on the internet.
Totally agree with your appreciation and I also wanted to comment on the term Guru that has been sadly misappropriated, when the original meaning is that of someone who takes you from darkness to light. I highly respect and appreciate Irene's work and humbly wanted to add that the word Guru shouldn't be used as an insult
I was struggling with giving my time to listen. but could not find a point to continue after some time. I was interested in nervous system and somatic response. Maybe later she addressed that too.
'Guru' is very misused and misinterpreted. Even Indians do it. What most people know about what a guru is, absolutely not ultimately what it is. To be frank, it's better not to be used at all because it's very disrespectful in complete sense from people who have no idea of what it is.
The history of psychology is very much rooted in experimentation and a constant struggle towards legitimacy.
They have established institutions with scholarships available.
aw, i say guru so lovingly. i never got into the netflix thing. it's too bad.
I'll hear from them
There are scholarships in Somatic Experiencing training

Thank you Irene. Can you speak on TMS Dr Sarnos work mind body.
If you want to hear about people's experiences with the nervous system approach that Irene teaches, you might check out here recent video with Darla about how she defied medical odds: irenelyon.com/2024/08/18/defying-all-medical-odds-via-nervous-system-healing-darlas-story/

@@IreneLyon Thank you !
