Ms. Son's playing touched my soul. This is one of the best recordings of Chopin's etudes that I've ever heard. I found myself having a very emotional reaction to this video.
It happened to me with the 3rd movement of the Schumann Fantasie that she played on a UA-cam video 2020 or so. For my taste she is as good as it gets and I've heard them all.
I just finished listening to this all the way through. I studied many of these compositions. However, I bow to this young woman's mastery and depth of interpretation. Chopin was a one true genius of our age. Her playing came from the depths of Soul. It is a testament that she fills exactly the euphemism of how a woman is a natural spiritual traveler. Most of the time she didn't look at her fingers and played from projecting into the essence of the music. An amazing performance! If you can play these like she played them, you can play anything on the piano!
Just wonderful. My beloved Chopin, played with such sensitivity, beauty. My favorite is the first one. Thank you Chopin and Yeol Eum Son!!! Such great masters!!
This is such a marvelous performance!!!!!!!!!!!!! Perfect!!!! One of the most beautiful and inspired interpretations I have ever listened of Op 25! This young woman is simply phenomenal!!!!!!
I have been deeply moved by this performance! It is, quite simply, marvelous! I have only just discovered this young lady, I shall be listening to her other performances!
Once again, there are no words that describe the beauty and perfection of this performance! I feel very lucky to have discovered the performances by Yeol Eum Son.
One of the most musically satisfying accounts of the Etudes I know. With young artists of this calibre the future of classical piano recitals looks promising.
How wonderfully this woman plays the piano! What a wealth of resources, what sensitivity, what a fidelity to the score, with what a wisdom manages the silences, so important in music, to create atmosphere, emotion and beauty (with Etude No. 7 in C sharp minor (13:21), my favorite, the tears come to my eyes). And last but not least, she seems to me such a nice person! And top it off, so pretty!
I have heard many pianists play these etudes and I have also studied and played (?) them. This lady is the best. The miracle of how she plays the first etude is stunning!
I must endorse the ecstatic comments below. This is a unique and breath-taking performance. On the basis of the UA-cam evidence, and especially this post and her 2011 performance of Beethoven's Op 111 Sonata and Mozart's K467 concerto, Son is already a truly great artist whose work can stand comparison with the very best from the recorded history of the classical piano repertoire. Hopefully she will soon receive the international recognition she richly deserves - in depth of musicianship she is already on a different level to any of the current crop of young pianist superstars.
Dan Usiskin This is very fine playing, indeed superb. But before dismissing the rest of the current crop... you may want to give Jan Lisiecki's recording (not the youtube videos) of the Etudes a serious listen. One amazing highlight is the Op. 25 No. 12 in c minor. I have yet to hear a better reading of the etudes than Lisiecki's.
I think I've seen quite a lot to know that this is an inspired performance. And from a 19 year old ? Such precision in the Rubatos, and great pedaling. Best Op. 25 I've ever seen. Bravo!
Just a very fine, musically sensitive performance. The etudes really breathe under Son's playing; they're expressive, alive, spontaneous. Just listen to the middle section of Op. 25 # 5 in e. It's just musically *there*, so to speak; very natural, unforced touches of rubato that simply express the music; very beautiful. One could give specific examples supporting this assertion from each etude. Son's playing is how I imagine Chopin would have played these pieces: technique serving the music first, not there to primarily showcase the performer's obvious command of the instrument.
My God that's beautiful, nearly brought me to tears -likely would have if I were more comfortable expressing my emotions. In the past, the first part of this always contributed to a "somber" mood, hearing/feeling it now made me think of new beginnings. For the first time I found Chopin to be uplifting.

I'm amazed and at a loss to explain how some artists can play perfectly leaving my soul untouched, while there are others whose artistry always awakens the depths of me. Kind of akin to painting by the numbers compared to a Picasso.
I love how she listens to the music as she plays. It's evident in her body language. Yes, the musicality is impeccably deep rich and soul touching. She must have definitely won 1st place - for sure. She’s brilliant and her playing is expressive and beautiful. .
What is interesting is how well Yeol Eum Son played at the Arthur Rubinstein Piano Master Competition. If Rubenstein were alive and present during her performance here, he should have been taking lessons from Yeol. She makes these extremely difficult works sing extremely beautifully and Rubinstein, although his technique was impeccable, he could not make the piano sing as well as what Yeol Eum Son proved here!
But now in MeeTo-times it is not appropiate for old men to have dinners with young girls. No, it can be misunderstood. I suggest instead that they all go to find a good piano, a Steinway, so that Eoul Eum Son can teach them to play on such a wonderful Piece of Art!
One of the comments says that there is 'very little emotion' in this performance but I can't think of any other version of the Op.25 Etudes where the pianist appears more emotionally involved than here.

I agree, she was also slightly robbed in the Van Cliburn Competition, where she should have shared the first prize with Zhang.

Raymond Van Leeuwen Then you should check out Zlata Chochieva's recording of all 28 etudes. Unbeatable!
Bo Tuflaat I will try to find her recording.
Bo Tuflaat Do not agree, however you have the right to your opinion
Thanks, LBM
She is an absolutely world class piano player. She is on the highest level when it comes to playing piano.

Me encanta esta simpática pianista coreana. Es ágil, sencilla y muy expresiva. La adoro tocando Mozart. Su gestualidad es preciosa 💖 💕 😍. Brava Yeol!!

"For the first time I found Chopin to be uplifting." It was always there.

A few mistakes doesn't matter. What matters is the musicality, and she has it in spades!
Il should like to play like this...c'est exactement le Chopin que j'aime entendre
+franknhonest. Tell me which one who could play this better than this woman?

Sublime. Goosebumps.
You understand the music so well. Wonderful! Can't offer many more superlatives - you are the most beautiful woman on Earth!

Breathtaking!!
가슴이 벅차오르는 연주예요!
This is pure MAGIC !!!!
I love her play.. wowwww
Wonderful!
If Mozart, Beethoven and Chopin had lived well, she would have been invited to have dinners with them many many times in such young age.
But now in MeeTo-times it is not appropiate for old men to have dinners with young girls. No, it can be misunderstood. I suggest instead that they all go to find a good piano, a Steinway, so that Eoul Eum Son can teach them to play on such a wonderful Piece of Art!
Nice compliment!
Aloha♡
Of course ♡
Certainty♡
someone called me shallow when i expressed my admiration of this extremely brilliant artist. no further comment
