Ms. Son: majestic, poetic, crystalline! Power and delicacy combined to suit this sweeping composition, ably supported by a wonderful orchestra and conductor. Further words fail. She is genius.
As a separate comment (and as someone who has been a professional audio producer for 30 years) the sound quality of this is fantastic. Hard to do in an old church with a decay time of around 5 seconds by my reckoning. It could have so easily been a muddled mess of the original notes and their competing reverberations - but a wonderful clarity and richness prevail. Astounding!!

I agree. Two months ago I wrote "The echo in this church suits the second movement perfectly! Listen at 19:10 and you will understand." Maybe also the ceiling of cotton helps it up a little bit. Never have I in a hard resonating church heard this warm sound before.
One of the finest interpretations all time of this 4:th piano consert. Yeol Eum Son is fabulous in this.
To me, both Beethovens pianoconcerts no 3 and no 4 comes before his 5:th. And here we have Son in a wonderful interpretation of the 4:th. It cannot be so much better. She reveals all the the emotions in this consert in the most distinguishing way. Bravo, Yeol Eum Son!

Vielen Dank to wonderful orchestra, conductor and all those who posted here. I heard number of world class pianists playing this most difficult and moving piano concerto including by Lang Lang, Uchida, Grimaud, and Argerich. But why do I like her performance best? Don’t know but she is just more exquisite and better than the rest regardless how slight or marginal that may be.
I love how the orchestra is silently and professionally vibing to the cadenza. You can tell they love it.
When Son plays the second movement, Andante con moto, it becomes a prayer for all humanity.
I've loved her since the 2009 Cliburn. This is a wonderful performance. That Bosendorfer is 😍. She should teach a master class on Beethoven trills. They are out of this world.
Another evening of a complete joy...Until now, should I say, my favorite has always been the 3rd and the 5th, because I could not quite get the hang of this piece since my college days 40 some years ago; I guess the performances I listened to somehow was not clicking before. But now for the first time, I felt the power and beauty and the brilliance of this piece, all put together in completeness. Her interpretations and execution were just beyond description; she was in complete command from the beginning to the end. We know her performance of Piano Concerto 21 by Mozart was amazing with 22 million viewers so far. This has become one of my favorites of her performance now. Her cadenza in the 1st movement alone was enough to listen to this again and again. Amazing. What a talent, and we are truly lucky to have her in our life time. Bravo! Thank you, Ms. Son.

I have listened to a great many recordings by a great number of conductors and orchestras in my lifetime. I try to express my opinion honestly and briefly, unless I find a performance of truly exceptional merit, which may prompt me to be a bit more descriptive. This was an excellent performance, to be sure, but I have heard many others of this piece that I found more moving, which is what I seek in listening to music. I recognize that what moves me is not what might do so for others, since each of us hears and perceives music as a uniquely personal experience. This orchestra, as well as the NDR Elbphilharmonie, consistently has produced quality music that I have enjoyed for a long time. I just feel that a brief comment indicating my overall impression of the performance is better than simply hitting the "Thumbs Up."

I enjoyed Pyeongchang music festival every summer and seeing Yeol em Son's directing there. But I was very disappointed that she quit directing the Pyeongchang Music Festival
Now I am glad to see her playing more actively like this
She wanted to do a bit more, but this year a new government responsibility cut the music festival's budget and put pressure on her. Since the Pyeongchang Daegwanryeong Music Festival belongs to the government, the position of music director has no power. And as her overseas schedule increased, she did her best until the end, despite the fact that she turned down the re-contract of her music director position earlier this year. Even under these conditions, the PyeongChang Daegwanryeong Music Festival finally found a new music director and reduced the music festival period again. When there was a refusal to renew her contract, the music producer had to find a new music director from then on, but it didn't. She missed her overseas schedule in January earlier this year due to health problems. Rather, I consider her quick decision to resign fortunate. She is not just a performer for the PyeongChang Daegwanryeong Music Festival. The days ahead for her to play are still long. With her concert tour starting again in February, I hope she will walk the roads of her performance tour healthy and happy.
I now love her Beethoven too. This is fabulous. No matter the composer her playing is so musically satisfying. She is right up there for me as a truly great pianist. I love her playing so. Check out her Schumann Fantasie here on UA-cam 2018 or so. Out of this world.

공간의 문제인가.. 공간의 울림이 좋아저인지. 여기서는 뵈젠도르퍼 피아노가 너무 투명하고 좋네. 녹음이 잘되어 인가... 평창 페스티벌에서 연주한 피협4번에 비해 동일한 피아노 연주가지만 협연이 누구인가에 의해 이렇게 다르게 표현되는구나. 엄청난 다이나믹스. 활기찬 생동감 피아노협주곡이지만 협주가 아닌 피아노의 개성이 너무 잘 드러난 이 공연과 이녹음 진정 감탄한다. 울림과 리이브한 느낌이 녹음에서도 잘 나타나서 좋다. 우리나라에서도 이런 공간에서 녹음이 되었으면.... 공연자와 객선 사이의 거리도 너무 부럽고

우리나라 연주자들에게 베토벤 작품은 무언가 모를 아쉬움이 늘 존재했는데 이 연주는 정말이지 너무 멋집니다. 계속 응원하겠습니다.
Wunderschöne Aufführung dieses perfekt komponierten Konzerts mit klarem doch anmutigem Klang des technisch fehlerlosen Soloklaviers sowie gut harmonisierten und perfekt entsprechenden Tönen der anderen Instrumente. Der zweite Satz klingt besonders schön und echt lyrisch. Im Kontrast klingt der dritte Satz echt lebhaft und auch begeisternd. Der intelligente und geniale Dirifent leitet das ausgezeichnete Orchester im gut analysierten Tempo und mit sorgfältig kontrollierter Dynamik. Einfach wunderbar!

This is very good. I have not known this soloist up to now, but I'm sure we'll be hearing from her much more in the near future. And whether it was consciously planned to perform AND record this concert in that church or not, the recording is truly atmospheric and surprisingly clear, with just the right amount of (distant) echo. And the piece! By far my favorite of Beethoven's five piano concerti, with the second set particularly playing on my heart-strings in my present frame of late life. Many thanks, NDR Classic! You are one of the best sources of music extant. JAT
