    Define Link Wray?
    A genuine American musician.
    A key figure of rock and roll.
    A revolutionary of electric guitar.
    An underrated jem.

    Wow! I am absolutely shattered! I loved Link Wray's music for several years to date (not to mention The Shadows before him), but I never could've thought that Wray even this far to cover this amazing song by The Shadows (an electric guitar standard for anyone and, for the connoisseurs, one of the songs Syd Barrett of Pink Floyd loved to rehearse during his university years). Sounds amazing! Thank you so much for sharing it! All the best and rock on!

    This song was playing when I bought my first Harley Davidson..... Lakeside Harley was the place. I was 19 years old and worked many double shifts and weekends to get the money up to purchase a used 1979 ironhead chopper. Back in the year of 1999 3,500 dollars was a lot of money and I only made 8.50 an hour then . I remember walking inside and seeing that chopper sitting in the corner of the show room ... the guys who worked in the back were just wiping it down to finish getting the wax access off. I walked over to it and as soon as I sat on it this song started playing on the stores sound system...... it was like a calling or sign !!! I liked it because it was flat black and had 5 1%2 foot forks chrome and the only other chrome on it was the tops of the heads the s&s air filter cover and those shark fin exhaust pipes.... I seen it was a 79 i fell in love with it!!! It was born the same year I was and was like me in every way, like me it wasn't show room beautiful and looked more tough and shined just enough to make it be noticed. Some people loved it and some hated it and also like me it was nothing like the rest,powerful and loyal every day!! This song takes me back to the moment that took a late teenaged boy and made him a man !! It was the day I got my first iron horse !!

    Although this is probably, at least, the third recording of this song, I must say that I like it better than its predecessors. I had the great privilege of seeing Link at The House of Blues in Chicago in the late 1990s. He blew me away! Years later, he played at a club that was located right across the alley from where I lived. He played so loud that I didn't even have to go into the club; I could just listen to the concert penetrating its way right through the solid brick wall of the venue. I have a tape to prove it!

    • @CASRO1151
      @CASRO1151 7 років тому +3

      I love that story about a grown man playing loud. Being a rocker you made my day.

    • @thejimdoherty
      @thejimdoherty 7 років тому +12

      And, believe me, I am NOT joking!! You could actually just sit in a lawn chair at my back gate and listen to the concert (which was at The Abbey Pub in Chicago somewhere around 2002 or so). When I was listening, it suddenly dawned on me that I should be recording this. I went and got my trusty Sony Walkman cassette recorder and taped at least half of the show. I have played that tape for people and virtually none of them believe my story that there were no windows or open door, and all this sound was basically forcing itself out through a brick wall. And, if I may ramble even longer, when I went to the 1990's performance at The House of Blues, Link started out his first number at an INCREDIBLE volume. After about four bars, he pointed to his guitar and then pointed to audio guy, and threw his thumb up into the air, like "EVEN LOUDER ON THE GUITAR!!!" I woke up the next morning with what sounded like 1000 crickets in my ears; my ears were ringing that badly. Doubly unfortunate was that that I was a recording engineer at that time and had to record and mix about 30 radio spots that day. (It also didn't help that I was incredibly hung over that day).

    • @CASRO1151
      @CASRO1151 7 років тому +3

      Noooooooooo. I love Link Wray, I love playing loud and I work at a radio station in Spain, so you can figure what that story means to me. God bless you.

He was the George Washington of his country and couldn't understand why the Americans wouldn't help free his country from France, but instead invaded ito support the scum that were ruining his country. I already heard the explanation. It was detailed in the above YT clip.

    I think it was The Shadows who originally did "Apache". I even hear a crappy house track that samples the Incredible Bongo Band's version in the gym, but I've always preferred the Shadows and Link Wray's version.

    You can hear he's using a Bigsby, and also thick strings, I imagine.

    I think the shadows version is a better one. But I do love link wrays' feel. proto metal

      Yep. The Shadows (a great British group) were the originals.

    Dick is of Mid Eastern descent and I hear that and Spanish in his sound. Link's sound is unique.

    It was the Shadows (Hank Marvin on lead guitar) who recorded it first and had a hit in Britain; Jorgen Ingman recorded it and his label released it worldwide, and that version became the international hit. Jorgen was from Denmark...sort of the "Scandinavian Les Paul"....

    So many great versions of this song. This one, of course, is the iconic one we hear in TV/Film, and is likely the first version many of us have ever heard.
    If that's the case, you owe it to yourself to check out the other versions. Jørgen Ingmann, the Shadows (the original version of this song), Davie Allan, The Ventures, etc. Unfortunately, the worst version by the Incredible Bongo Band, is the one that gets sampled on all the hip-hop tracks. Figures.

      Right! I first herd Jorgen (no Danish Characters on my machine) in 10th grade. TO me it is much better!

      lol what ridiculous bias. I love Link Wray but he fops quite a few notes on this version, definitely not as tight as the Bongo Bands recording.
