Link's two main guitars were a Les Paul Gold Top with single coil P-90s, which he made his first hits on. This guitar was eventually stolen. The other was a Danelectro Longhorn. He told me on "Rumble" he used a 15 watt amp which had vibrato on it; of course he poked holes in the speaker for extra 'edge'. Link's other guitars included a Fender Stratocaster, a Yamaha solid body which he travelled with; and his favorite was an early 60s Gibson SG Les Paul which he used on albums in the late 70s.
Nice to see some of you younger cats digging Link. He started it , the aggressive, power chording. Where would Keef and so many others be if there had not been a Link Wray?
Thanks for posting this. I have been looking for this for years. I used to have it, then lost it, and its been about 4 years since I last heard it.. seriously cool tune.
I think thats why he never really rocketed in success like he shouldve, I mean it had that 50's rock sound but the distorting was way ahead of the time, and like you said maybe even our time hah, but I bet someday other people will enjoy it like we do
@Satchmoeddie I'd recommend P-90s, and or WD Music's Armstrong ceramic magnet 5.6K Strat pick up. Both can get really dirty, but it is a purist dirt, and not like using a fuzz gain stage. OLD
I have no idea, but Link was a pioneer of the distortion and I read that in the early years he broke the speakers of his cabinets to obtain distorted sounds. Try some Fuzz pedals! ;)
@ChristianU2ubeh Link played a Supro Dualtone guitar,on Rumble and a Premier amp that had a 3" or 5' tweeter. He slashed the tweeter(s) with a razor blade. I get a good Link Wray with a Vantage 795P that has an Ibanez 80 neck pick up that is super bright & almost tinny sounding mixed with a Duncan JB through a small Dynacord Twen 20 watt tube amp which is loaded with a Vox Wharfedale C30 12". I used a BC108 DIY dist pedal. The Dynacord is a lot like a PP/SFace Fender Princeton.change the spkr.
Well, it's definitely a single coil pickup, probably from one of the more "strange" guitars of that era, and bright fuzzy overdrive tones like this usually come from a tiny amp not really meant for rock 'n roll that's being pushed way beyond it's limits.
PaulSAUK I was born in '56. I was listening to Link Wray on 8track when I was going to high school in '72 thru '75, while most everybody else in my school was into that new disco garbage. 😂
@ChristianU2ubeh Tube amp with a couple of loose tubes [courtesy 1956 Johnny Burnette recording "Train Kept A Rollin" with Paul Burlison on guitar] A few well placed razor cuts or pencil holes in the speaker cones. And lastly, a Danelectro Guitarlin [31 fret, 3 1/2 octave with whammy bar].
@ChristianU2ubeh I would imagine that Fender would work. It will be a trial and error situation - I wish I could remember accurately which tubes we loosened [usually 2 or 3] on our Silvertone, Fender or Standell amps. We never went to the extreme of modifying speaker cones though.
obviously it would be a mic'd amp, being a studio recording. have you tried mic'ing up a 1920's valve radio? you can get some really good distortion using mic placement to tweak your sound.
@ELMAKIRETURNS Seriously bro,I know PF about 15 years when i was a small child i used to watch it with my grandpa for 22 times every single year till now lol...Its my favourite movie too....:)
Any idea how to get this tone? It's the dirtiest, most beautiful sound before The Beatles did Revolution. I'm using a 1980 Gibson Sonex through a Digitech RP-350 (on bypass) a Marshall 1959SLP head through a 1973 Marshall Slant Cabinet.
@profaqualung Got the tone. Doctored a little Orange Micro Crush I got in the mail for 20 dollars, then ran it through a compressor and a 1970 Big Muff π
Reply to motorvating's comment Yes mate I do know what I am listening to What i was saying was that this version is dreadful with that sync drum ! IT DOESNT WORK for me.I much preferred the original and I acknowledge that Link Wray had a big impact on guitar music in the 1950/60s. For your information my tastes do extend beyond J bunny I present a Rock Show on legendary radio station.
Well aren't you the educated one ? Do you not know what you was listening to ? do you not understand the significance of Link Wray ? do you not understand what Link Wray did to music ? or does your musical experience not go beyond jive bunny ?
💎💎Link Wray Top guitariste trop souvent oublié 💎💎
Best sound ever. Link Wray's creations are my #1 and will remain.
I just discovered Link Wray recently. I think his music is still ahead of our time.
colosalblack Made a huge dent in my life!
His musick does not have a time, Dear Colosal. He was a Shawneee Indian. His blood made him think differently.
It was.
It's also ahead of our space.

isn't that what Rock and Roll is supposed to do PUSH the limits
No we were the children of the 50s ready to take over with heavy metal I was born in 54
PaulSAUK got socks older then that

@@t4texastomjohnnycat978 you we're pretty much a punk rocker in those days I'm a disco hater cause I'm a rock n roller purist no questions asked!
Paulsauk probably died 4 years ago and we're trying to talk to a dead dude 🤷
@ELMAKIRETURNS The best old rock and roll cames from the South. That is where it originated - in the Confederate States.
clarkewi
And THAT'S the truth. 👈🎸

This must've sounded like aliens for someone in the 50's.
but this is not from 50's :D

Why not 2 more likes?
2 steps:
#1 -> Grab a pencil
#2 -> Stab your speaker
Good luck!
Rsrs!
my best sound success is due to my Standel amp , its big , and old and mean as Link, lol
slash the amp up. That's how they did it in the old days
@ELMAKIRETURNS Seriously bro,I know PF about 15 years when i was a small child i used to watch it with my grandpa for 22 times every single year till now lol...Its my favourite movie too....:)
More cowbell!!

He punched some holes on his amp with a pencil
I know ur comment is 7 years old, but fuck it better late than never :)
@profaqualung Any tube amp will do it? I recently bought a Fender Bandmaster AB763 with a matching 212 cabinet.
gain? overdrive? poke holes in your amplifier with a pen
Amps gotta be a small premier.
Lots of base with a liitle more than normal mid range and touch of tweeter experiment 'till it sounds right
anyone have an idea on how to play this song?
@profaqualung Got the tone. Doctored a little Orange Micro Crush I got in the mail for 20 dollars, then ran it through a compressor and a 1970 Big Muff π
I can hear how Pagey ripped him on this track especially
what year was this song originally released?
Anyone know what album this was originally on? Obviously in stereo, unlike his early material.
Thats probably what Link Wray actually did
'94 BITCHES!
Moar cowbell
Which album is this from?
ok
ruosteista stoner bluesia, tästä ei parane enää.....

Try getting rid of the pedal?

Maybe he just prefers proper Link Wray without the shitty drum machine
This is not Link Wray more like Bull Shite ! !
