I guess you all watched rumble on netflix and it brought you here lol. I think this performance is to distorted, takes away from the rawness and mystique of his original but yes this started the rebellious danger aspect of rock n roll

He definitely had those Marshalls cranked all the way to 11… When I saw him play at the bluebird theater in Denver, he had four double stacks cranked to 11… Two stacks facing the audience, the other two standing just behind the previous two but facing backwards. The sound was terrifying

Think about it, Link was there in the Fifty as one of the originators of rock. In this clip it’s the mid-80’s, and he’s still looking and sounding very contemporary, fitting in with punk, new wave, alternative. The other guys from the Fifties had even gone away or were distinctly nostalgia acts by then. Link never got old.

At 77 years old I was lucky to have heard this song in 1958 and could not get it out of my head. I used to picture vampires coming in my bedroom while this was playing late at night on my radio under my pillow. Wkbw came in clear and so did wprt so it was easy to hear this at all hours. May God have link do concerts in Heaven if I get there.

If you were 77 in 1958, I have some bad news: the vampires got you!

Well Lisa my humble apologies for the
terrible way I worded my terrible comment. I was 11 years old when I first heard the song. Guess my injuries in 1967 while in the military. Five months being told that you won't live has an affect on the mind. Sorry to set you off sideways.

      @LisaJohnson1967 7 місяців тому +1

@user-tp7ny5xi3f Hey, I didn't mean anything by it, I was trying to be funny! As in, if you were 77 in 1958 and you are posting on this, that would mean you are currently well over 100 years old, and vampires are about the only way to achieve that! Meaning, "They (the vampires) got (bit/turned) you!" & that's why you're over 100 yrs old & posting on UA-cam about the experience that started it!
Sounds like something my mind would conjure up as well.
Nothing terrible about it; I apologize if I gave offense.

When I first heard this song, there were no distortion pedals, no digital delay, no monitors, just reverb on the amp and whammy bars on the guitars, try to imagine the impact of these heretofore unheard of sounds on the youth of the day. We would wait until the tune turned up on AM radio, which it did once an hour, and our heads would explode. Link Wray altered the musical landscape.

Link Wray; the man who taught the guitar how to curse!

Went to see Link Wray at this outdoor restaurant/event place in the mid-2000s. He never made it and two weeks later the news came out he was dead. As sad as that is, the opening act also did rockabilly, including Rumble, to make us not regret coming and it was still a nice evening due to them. Part of me thought Link had health problems at his age, not 100% but saddened at the news of his passing.

We know, evidentially from this video, who influenced Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page and the badass guitar players of the generations that followed him. Link Wray also personified “cool” for generations. I wonder if he knew the influence and effects he had on so many?

Wray always fascinated me. Seemed to put together a handful of quintessential instrumentals in quick succession in the late 50s early 60s and never really made much after that.

So so simple but boy oh boy it hits you right between the eyes and gut. So so heavy, powerful, intense with such a swagger. How did he come up with this in the 50’s! Whenever I pick up a guitar that has a fat dirty nasty tone this is the first thing I play.

Link is god level but I think your comment about JP is a wee bit too harsh considering that Rolling Stone magazine described Page as "the pontiff of power riffing" and ranked him number three in their list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time", behind Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton!

@@Redracer608 I thought Jimmy was a bit "giddy" also (in a good way, though). He was just so into the guitar riff -almost getting off on it. Great work, Jimmy.....glad to see that the music still makes you have a great time!!

This was the first song I ever learned to play on the first electric guitar (a Sears-Roebuck) I ever bought with my own money through my first amp (also a Sears-Roebuck). I went to my garage, cranked it to 10 and never looked back. I was 10 years old and by God I was a guitar hero.

Saw Link at the Double Door in Charlotte, NC in the late 90s and had the opportunity to meet him after the show. I walked up to him, whipped out my wallet and attempted to hand him the largest bill I had - only a $10. He looked puzzled and asked "What's this for?" I said "Pete Townsend said anyone who ever played a loud, distorted guitar owes you money and this is all I got!" He laughed genuinely and told me to keep my money. We had a nice conversation. He was in his 70s at that point and he rocked the house.
