- RC car maintenance is a task that often gets ‘put off’ for one reason or another. However, to keep our vehicles in top condition, preventative maintenance is something we all must do between enjoyable sessions of racing or running our vehicles! Believe it or not there are some things that you can do during maintenance that can cause problems later on down the road. We’ve come up with five common maintenance mistakes that you should know before you start working on your RC machine. Here are our tips that will keep you running your vehicles rather than working on them.

Think checking for loose screws periodically is just as important as the 5 mentioned.
Good tips. ive never had an issue using submerging my rig in water. Swims as good as it crawls
Reel Clean is great for RC’s. It’s in the sporting goods department. It’s used for fishing reels, lines and electronics. FYI it’s great on RC’s. It lubricates as it cleans and is safe for plastics.
Another one to add is pulling out the motor and cleaning it and oiling the bearings/bushings.
Nice job 👍 great information.I use all purpose work's well.A little bit put it right on the rag not on the car or truck. Thanks for the info.Stay Safe Stay Healthy!
Great advice brother, fantastic video. I personally dont go near any water even if its says my truck is water proof, best way i think because water is a evil element when it comes near metal. 👍😁👍😁👍😁🇬🇧
I'm a newb. I see these videos with obviously "waterproof" RCs operating in sloppy mud bogs, crossing rocky streams, racing along the ocean's edge, and falling two feet deep into a pond; NOBODY says a thing. Mention you rinsed your wheels and suspension with a low-pressure stream from your kitchen sink's hose attachment and you're a vapid dullard to be mocked and impugned.
I just got my slash 4x4 vxl a few months ago and I take it to the track not every weekend but most and I’m not sure when I should rebuild my differentials because it’s not like the truck gets daily use. Nice tips👍👍👍
Thanks 👍 Great info man 🙂
I adore this video, it helped me to quickly grasp a lot of data about what parts are sensitive, what wears out fast, what not to do. I've owned a high-end gasoline RC car for about two years now, and haven't started it because I don't want to harm it. The gas tank is thankfully empty so I'm not too worried, because the prior owner always runs things out of gas before storing them. I don't think he ever put storage gas into the lines but they still seem healthy. Anyway...Do you sell a body for the RC Car? The thin plastic shell with graphics on it. I'm in Fresno California, and I should take the car to a local RC shop - but I feel dumb not knowing anything. I'd like to put a nice looking shell on it before even using it lol.
For the nitro newbies: After run oil. Know it, love it, and your engine will love you back. Whenever you are finished running your rig for the day, remove the glow plug and air filter boot and place a drop or two down the carb and to the piston where the glow plug hole is, then cycle the engine a few times and move the throttle in and out to spread it about. It helps prevent the build up of castor oil from gunking up your engine so it will run just how you remember when you bust it out next time. I like Marvel Mystery Oil myself.
ForceReconSD Excellent advice! Thank you for adding it!
RCDriver_Online how is a 10 year old supposed to be able to do all that
Adult supervision would help, wouldn't you think?
The GamingManiac Dmdkekd My eleven year old manages by his self nowadays - just a learning curve like every thing else
The GamingManiac Dmdkekd I'm 12 and I do it
Every time I get done using my rc, I clean it off and sometimes check to see if it's broke or not.
Good advice. Thanks. 👍
Me too man, I clean mine looks new, besides the scratches and dents lol. No dirt though haha
Amazing
Good tips
Are you going to do any boating videos? I see you have a rigger and M41.
can u make a vid for nitro maintenance pls?
how often do you reccomend rebuilding shocks and diff?
New to the hobby. How often do you need to do maintenance and how do you do it?
Nice video! What’s that van in the background at 1:35 ?
Awesome video, surely I will apply your tips on my RC´S :D
Thank u 4 the video, what if I don't have time is wd40 and air compressor enough without taking anything a part?
Hi friend, I'm from Brazil and I have some questions. I would be very happy if you would help me! I have already discovered that it is necessary to apply grease to the outer gears of the differentials, but I really wanted to know if I should also grease the gears of the engine. Example: 6448 parts: Spur gear, 8985: Input gear transmission, both from Traxxas Maxx. Another question is that the center differential gear comes into contact with a motor gear, should I grease it too? Part 8988. Inside Driveshaft 8949, do I also need to apply grease?
How often to clean the shocks?
i broke my yeti's rear axle housing yesterday on the trail, it took out the drive shaft on that side when the housing broke. guess it had a small crack in it and broke when under a lot of stress, always check for any broken parts before running your cars or trucks.
Very true, checking before a run can mean uninterrupted play time. How was the audio on the video this time Green? I made an adjustment.
its much better now : )
Awesome. Thanks again for letting me know!
OMG Gecko I'm subbed to u!!!! I didn't know you liked Hobby RC too!
Green Gecko Lego Technic Workshop holy shit it’s you, love your vids man!
So, how often you are supposed to pull out the 3 diffs to disassemble and work on them? I guess it depends on the usage, but with low to moderate use, let's say.
George Pantazis probably like every 2-3 months
@@devon8419I've had my maxx for over 2 years and never looked at the diffs and runs and sounds fine once it starts making noises I'll look at it
I would appreciate a list of helpful maintenance grease, lube and cleaners. Gotta stock the workshop with the good stuff.
Jan Good suggestion! We’ll put it on the to do list. Most of those items we use are from Cow RC.
You were talking about the drive shafts and it got me to thinking. I'm wondering if you have ever used Fluid Film to lube the drive shaft and steering knuckle joints?
We've used Trakpower Krytech with good resuls: www.trakpowerusa.com/chemicals/index.html
I’m making a hobbygrade rc snowmobile and it’s tough! I’ve been trying to perfect the gearbox but I need help
Did you end up succeeding in your snowmobile
@@shaun7057 yeah he’ll yeah buddy! I have 2 of them running good and me and my brother race each other on snocross track that we make every winter even tho I’m in college! I make videos if ur interested in seeing the amazing progress!✌🏽thx for replying I forgot i commented this :)
Hell yeah that's awesome I'll peep your videos put
i had a 1/18th scale rc car (HPI mini recon) for over 4 years now. i havent maintained it in any way. sure the whole front suspension broke off once, now wonders it broke when i literarly jumped it from a fucking roof. but nothing has ever broken on it since then. i havent replaced shock oil, grease, nothing! and it still performs as good. iam going to start maintaining it tho because i hear some clicking in the rear diff sometimes.
Hey what is yellow van on wall ? Where did you get the body
so I got 3 or 4 rc cars from my grandfather when he passed but none of them work and im not really interested in running them much as im more into shooting rifles but do you have a video explaining how to fix these up everytime i look at them I want to but I have no idea where to start
Start with the manual for the particular car. The manual has parts and pictures of how to repair.
Fr though I just disassembled the whole car and clean it with degreaser and a tooth brush and rinse everything off with water but I completely dry everything so nothing is wet when I put it back together. The only things I dont clean that way is the motor, electronics, and bearings. My drive shafts are dog bones so I just clean them with water and dry everything completely before it goes back together
Shocks for me are the easiest next time I need to do it I think ima put some covers on them also you should check if any screws are lose just to make sure you all good
Curto muito seu canal pois é o unico que tem legenda em português
I’m brand new to the hobby, how often should I clean my rc? And what about a brushed motor? How often should I “clean” it?
Clean your car after every run
check spur/pinion mesh.
Will I also end up as an old man trying to be cool with a cap on backwards?
Thanks for the tips
Show some respect son, he was prob wearing that same hat, the same way when you were conceived in a BWW bathroom.
I have a tip, if you have a chassis that can catch... stuff, then tip the car over (outside) and give it a good couple shakes to get small rocks and other stuff out
Good tips. Ball differentials is such a pain to maintain. Should be illegal to have them in anything else than Pro Racing cars. Gear differentials don’t need to be rebuild that often. Especially if you have sealed the diff house properly. But thanks for sharing !
Are you supposed to do this after every run? Or what's the schedule? Thanks!
It depends if you run in mud and water or in my case if Its a basher not so much, water and drit make most of these more important, I drive more at skateparks so the shocks and stuff is not to bad I don't think after each run would be nesscesary at all only from time to time
So I got an rc car a few months back. I look over it for general breaks and give it a rough wash off. I never take apart the shocks, drivetrain, diffs or gearbox because I'm new and I'm worried I'll break things. Is there much risk of me breaking stuff?
google the owners manual :)
I saw some other videos like
'how to clean you brushed motor's
And they just submerged it into water and just give it some run
After some time the water got black what happened?
Nothing. If the motor is brushed it’s just some debris from the brushes when it was made. If you have a brushless motor, consider it screwed.
Don't do that it's a joke and will fuck your shit up, I just take the motor of and tap it with something for a couple minutes and all the debris and shit falls out.
@@stpbasss3773 It's not a joke. That's how you run in brushed motors. Back when brushed was the only choice it was common knowledge. You have to let the square brushes wear to the circular rotor shape. Doing it in water gives just enough drag on the motor and keeps everything cool and flushes the carbon dust out too. Afterwards just blow it out, and hit it with some WD40 and you're good to go. DO NOT do this with brushless motors, you will destroy them. Brushed motors are perfectly fine being submerged in water...part of the reason they are great for crawlers.
well after 2 months in running my stampede 4x4 in loose dirt and grass and not cleaning it I am suffering the consequences: Grinding motor, grinding diff, and squealing slipper clutch. Listen to this Man
Well I've done none of this to my rc I'm really guilty of the first one I spray my slash with the hose and I mostly forget to dry it uh oh
Anthony Dwyer your screws probably have some issues then, as well as diff grease. I'd do a rebuild with everything and changed out shock and diff oil
I'd hate yo see how you take care of your real car lol, common sense that water isn't good for something that is electronic waterproof or not duhhhhh.
What??? 😂
I used vaseline on plastic gears, pretty sure that is a no go right?
Changing the oil is not a rebuild? Rebuild would be installing new parts ? Right?
Simple green is the best..
Should I use water to clean out my traxxas shoocks
ANYTHING rcawesom3nes only if you fully disassemble them. Then just use a microfiber cloth or coffee filter to dry them
I wish there were more local maintenance and repair garages for RC cars just like there are for real cars lol
hey new to the channel and whole rc thing but i have a question, is there anyway i can send you pictures through Instagram or some way? I found an rc car that seems to be pretty intact. I don't know the brand or anything about it but it says HPI Racing on some parts. A couple of things are broken and missing but i don't know the name of things specially so im just asking so I can send you photos and use your experience for help. Thanks! :)
Is it possible to have somebody when you go to there Workshop can they do I for you if you don't now how to do it ???
Kade Widdas just do it yourself. Watch a tutorial, and try it. Trust me, you'll learn a ton from working on your own rig
RC HAZARD 87 - thanks
can i use engine degreaser or carb cleaner for degreasing diffs etc ?
yup
@@johntuffy5721 cool thanks man i've got about 5lts of the stuff lol
Will brake cleaner work
For bearings cleaning I use gasoline, I put my bearings in there and leave it for a day. When taking them out of the gasoline, I let them dry because gasoline vaporates very quickly.
I used to do that with my dad when I was a kid, gas cleans anything... then he died of cancer at 41... so I’m like.... kind of up in the air on it right now, how Yha feeling?....:)
Whats the yellow car on the back wall?
trx-4 literally gets submerged and still drives in many many many videos. so how does a spray with a hose hurt Rc that are waterproof and literally have been submerged drove out and are working fine? just curious
It doesnt hurt shit.. Just dry it completly after. And Let it live in the house, not in a cold damp garage.
On a TRX4 it doesn't hurt a thing. However, many RC's say they are waterproof when they are in fact just "splash proof". Hitting those type of RC's with a hose spells trouble. The creator of the vid is talking in general terms, he can't possibly cover every single model out there. The safe advice is to say "Just don't hose it off" even though there are some that will be just fine.
If it has an IP67 rating it can be submerged in water for a half hour at 1 meter deep. If I remember correctly most traxxas electronics have the IP67 rating.
what van body is that hanging up?
I was just about to ask too
Don't be afraid to smear more Grease than you had in there... I packed mine like the real thing. In Crawlers only, of course! They're not as affected by the added drag as a racer or Basher would be.
I also primarily use Marine Grease. It doesn't turn to Poo, if water gets in the Axles or Transmission, AND if you do pack it in well enough, the Axle Shafts will push what it doesn't need out of the way. The Grease in the Axle Tube forms a SEAL, preventing liquid and grit from getting TO the Diff.
I think people having the rear diff on the udr could use this advice of filling the diff and axle tubes with grease to keep sand out
What's a good starter RC car?
I started out with a 1/10 Traxxas Rustler XL-5. it's a brushed motor and 2WD, so it doesn't have too many high maintenance parts like an AWD car would have, but any XL-5 car from the same family would do (slash, bandit, stampede, rustler)
Will we 40 hurt to use
So after how many hours of running the car before taking parts apart to do deep clean and re greasing?
I’m new to the hobby but have my first crawler and take it in rain, mud, and water crossings. Belray marine grease is a wonder on wheelnuts/ bearing in wet conditions. Driveshaft gets dots of dry lube, and the steering knuckles got a quick shot of wd40. (Testing it out to see how much grime builds up) In the summer months, I’m planning on using only small amounts if anything due to dust sticking.
So if it’s raining and wet, I’d reapply every use. If it’s dry. Inspect and clean.
IDE rather fix things or rebuy the, than rebuild ANYTHING
good luck buying a new slash 4x4 for 300 bucks each time
The Yellow truck you have behind you in the workshop.... What is that body :-) ?? or the hole truck tell something about it.
no, he ain't gonna tell you shit!
What was the cleaner cow rc cleaner
I use a light coat of silicone spray on my cars, gunk and shit doesnt attach that good and its more easy to clean after.
Where can I get the tires on your e revo
Here You Go: traxxas.com/products/parts/5375R
RCDriver_Online Thanks a lot!
I didn't learn my lesson. After I knew that my wheel hub bearings were making noise on my xmaxx 8s, I ignored them. One rear one locked up and my motor fried. Nice. Check your freaking bearings and do your maintenance. Or pay the price like I did 😔.
urh all that work. I think i'll just do the bare minimum and see how long it lasts.
it’s really not “work” if you like the hobby
Submerge....ill throw it in lake and buy a boat ....lol
@@markstanley5463 boat needs maintenance to you know

onkyo808 The site is down right now for maintenance. We’re working on it right now. Probably another day and you’ll be able to get on. Thank you for your patience!
So how i can clean my e-revo after driving in mud, when i cannot use water on bearings?
I have the same question. I see videos of people cleaning their RCs with water constantly, but "oh god no it'll break everything!" Allllrighty then, so _no_ water? Just an air compressor? Don't think that's gonna do it...
I used a hose on my machine earlier because I was terrified that I didn't clean it right away and I had driven through a small puddle (accidentally). I WD-40d the bearings as Traxxas says to do right on the product page and it runs fun now, but I don't have an air compressor. Waiting on some canned air, and then next time I clean it I'll _not_ use water (I guess?) and just use a paint brush.. or.. something. I don't know.
@@GeddyRC you should regrease bearings after driving in water or change them for new ones every 6 months. Use marine grease instead oil. Dont use WD40 on bearings because this is degreaser.
can you use brake clean? to clean parts
Ernesto RIVERA only on metal parts because plastic with shrink and turn ugly
Not unless you want to destroy every part of your car. As well as the motor. Nope, dont do it. Start out with an air compressor and blow off the junk. Use a stiff brush to remove the heavy stuff. Then using a spray bottle, direct the spray onto individual parts, dont just hose everything down. Use old T shirts as rags,or paper towels to clean. Never ever use solvent based cleaners on an RC car. Simple green,or my favorite, purple power, works best. Gently spray on the cleaner, let soak, then use a sparay bottle with clear water to rinse. then use compressed air to blow the water out of everything. If you need to tear down things ,then do it.
I never wash,I let dry first then brush off the dirt and grease as necessary
how do we join
How often should you maintain your RC car??
kerupt5 it depends on how often you use it
You heard it here first...M-Pro 7 gun cleaner. The best stuff you'll ever use on an rc car. Virtually odorless and lubricates. Spray on wipe off.
I use a sandblaster
I definitely don’t douse my RC in water to clean it off
Is it ok to use a watering can to clean your RC car? 😬
please tell all of us how
i ran mine in wet grass and i cant clean it
Those are not mistakes dude, those are things you should do from time to
time. Water cleaning is a mistake - period. Spraying bearings with WD40 like
degreasers is a mistake. Too often maintenance is a mistake. Overtightening the
screws is a mistake and so on...
Lachezar Krastev right! No water, compressed air, or WD-40 EVER touches my rigs!
Lachezar Krastev I use kroil on my drive shafts after water runs to keep them from being squeaky
Hum how do I maintain my bearings then?
G. S. Beating grease i guess or just buy new ones good bearings cost only 10 bucks atleast in finland
Lachezar Krastev why does a Wd-40 have a bad effects on bearings?
Can I use wd40 to clean and lubricate things on my nitro rc?
Wd40 is not a lubricant!! Everyone says it is but it's not!! It is meant to remove rust and stop stuff from squeaking!! Use a lubricant from an auto store or online.
-Kittyboy729
Just put a TINY drop of WD40 on each screw to keep them from rusting out. Too much can cause it to colect dirt. If you're planning on running it in snow, spray a little WD40 on a toothbrush and scrub your bumpers, those will cracking in cold weather
Kittyboy ..it's is a lubricant ..says right in there website. Check it out
@@chriswebb383 cool go use it as a lubricant and see how long your shit lasts, most people unless you're 12 have used wd40 on something thinking it's a lubricant and fucked it up.
Sk8tilltoudie..I've used it my entire life man. I'm not some young kid and guess what...I e never ducked anything up lol ..soooo since your so smart how bout you go find yourself a safe place where they don't use wd40 .;) ....
Wd-40 works best for me.
Can i use wd-40 to lubricate everything or os that a no
@@aidenmaves5537 not on any bearings unless its to clean. The purpose really is to keep the plastics proper or else they dehydrate and become brittle. And it keeps the screws from rusting just remember wd 40 is fish oil based so it is semi conductive. Works really good as a flame thrower but lets not be silly.😂
@@jasonmorgan661 ya one of its main purposes with me is a flamethrower or to spray on campfires. But ya ig i can use it for rust and stuff to lol
Why did my Tyco Turbo Hopper from 1985 last so long and not need any of this maintenance yet continue to run without parts breaking??? Will somebody PLEASE manufacture a durable & low maintenance RC car for crying out loud??!!
When he says this is the most important part of the car then says this is the most important part of the car
lol air compressor ... g.l.
Why cant you just buy new parts? I feel like this would be a better easier solution instead of cleaning worn out parts.
Why am I watching this, I don't even have a rc like a hobby grade, I barely have any rc!
BriaN if you're planning on getting one
#1 rule: Use common sense! Even though it's not all that common these days. And for Pete's sake check every nut, bolt and screw BEFORE your first run! Remember, these are built on assembly lines by some not so enthusiastic employees. You can have tons-O-fun without breaking things every time out.
Using water to clean electronics is not too bright!! Jus brush it n blow it off!!
Oof I used water to clean it..
Using little water or having a good squirt with the pressure washer, no real difference if you blow it off with an airline ! If any of mine get real shitty I always pressure wash mine using common sense on how close to get to the car. Always blow off with an airline. Lube with gt85 and I've had no problems.
Laugh if you'd like I know it's 6 years old but anything metal for me goes into gas for a few days get resoaked in oil and then re assembled haven't had a problem yet use lots of grease and use a drill to run it at full speed and reassemble no drag what so ever
Never do this.
Drive until it breaks, then replace or repair your parts.
Be creative.
Have fun.
Don't forget to clean your pillow balls if your rc has them! :)
Lol

How is a 10 year old supposed to be able to do all that
This is a hobby that snares grown men, more often than not with technical backgrounds. A 10-year old with an experienced mentor will have fun with this. A 10-year old on his own will likely get frustrated or feel overwhelmed very quickly.
The GamingManiac Dmdkekd A 10 uear old should be taught by someone that knows how to do it. I was tearing my .22 Ruger hunting gun down and cleaning it around that age. Kids now days are too damn smart. They can learn this stuff and by teaching at an early age, they get into the habit of properly maintaing their equipment, saving on repairs, saving money on parts that wear out because of neglect.
I'm 12 and have had to take apart my Rc 4 times just stay focused don't lose anything and make sure you know where these parts are
Jeremyl16 same I've taken mine apart more than that though
And... depends in what rc you have nitro electric kit rtr it was just to help him out
I broke my driveshafts
pancakeman45 everyone's done it...
I can hear all the RTR Generation kids going, "Huh?? What's a diff?" Here's another tip: don't buy disposable RTR crap! Buy a real kit. If you build it, you can fix it.
That's a very snub opinion.
Matthew Byrd there's nothing wrong with RTRs. It's a great way to get a start and some experience in the hobby. Easy to fix. Not to mention if you want to focus more on cosmetic mods then a RTR is a great alternative to a full on kit
I encourage that. Otherwise, I can't buy them off Ebay for spare parts!!!
Ashley Barrett, I wouldn't know; I have never seen an RTR in a race. And, there is a reason for that.
Amen.
Mind you own business.
