Installing a HAYWARD SKIMMER on an INTEX pool | We finally made the switch!

  • We finally switched from the Inboard Intex Skimmer to an outboard Hayward Skimmer!
    It took us three longggg years to get the nerve up to cut into our pool liner and we only wish we had done it sooner. It really wasn’t that bad!
    Now we have more flow, improved suction and vacuuming will improve faster connections of vacuuming equipment, enhanced productivity, and overall performance.
    It was so easy to install, and a lot easier than we ever imagined. Have no fear. You can do it too!
    Here is what you need:
    Phillips screwdriver, a knife to cut the liner, some Teflon tape, and some waterproof sealant.

      Thank you. When you do install it, make sure you don't split your gasket in two pieces we did that and found out it was wrong. Even though we didn't have any leaks, we found out we made a small mistake. We love ours and occasionally we will use a skimmer sock and get even more good dirt in the basket.

    Was the first thing I added to my XTR before I even filled it up the first time. Make sure you really crank those screws down. It shouldn’t need any caulk to seal but doesn’t hurt to have it. Get yourself some pool socks for the skimmer. Learned the hard way on mine. That flow will pull in so much fine particles into the sand filter you will be backwashing more than ever without the socks. I even went as far as switching my sand to a more course filter sand from the local pool supply store. Only other thing I did different was completely getting rid of that intex shutoff valve and got a pvc ball valve from Home Depot. Got the adapter to screw it right into the Hayward and used the same Game adapter to screw on the intex flexible hose. It’s kept my water flawless all season so far. Great upgrade!

    Thank you so much for all your pool videos. They're awesome in the way you explain in detail how you added a skimmer. Just put up our 3rd 26x52" XTR. Because of your video we're convinced to do away with the old style skimmer. We have the Hayward skimmer, sand filter and chlorinator. However, I may have missed how you permanently plugged the holes for the two inlets. Please explain.

    • @MoverandShaker
      @MoverandShaker  11 місяців тому

      So the strainer hole plugs or commonly known as the black hats are inside the two holes on the inside of the pool with the strainer basket covers on top. These keep the water from coming out of your pool. On the outside, we really didn't need to do this but we decided to use clear silicone inside the tubes and for aesthetic purposes we just put another set of black caps on there so it wouldn't look odd with the holes. Here is a link for the black caps amzn.to/3OkoOCr

    Reason you had that leak at the bottom is because the gasket is suppose to go on the inside of the pool not the outside. But either way looks like it's working amazing. One thing I am on the fence about is the water level. Using one of these skimmers pretty much lowers the water level a little.

    • @MoverandShaker
      @MoverandShaker  Рік тому +7

      Actually, we know we installed it incorrectly. It's actually supposed to split down the sides and go 1/2 in and 1/2 out but stay as one piece whereas we split it in half. Lesson learned, but we aren't having any leaks! The pool level does not concern us as with a 52" pool we are o.k. with losing A few inches for the skimmer, it really doesn't make a huge difference to us. We are very happy with it.

      @@MoverandShakerdon't worry cause I actually installed the butterfly gasket like u said and still had that same small leak. Used Flex Seal first and then a bead of silicone for extra reinforcement. Hopeing it works. Waiting for it to dry. I think because these pools arents solid siding its harder to get perfect seal cause they bend and give. But like u said I can deal with a drip but hoping what I said fixes it totally. Thanks for the video by the way.

    One step you missed..and so did we after watching several videos is you will need to purchase plugs for one of the two original intake valves. One was attached to skimmer. The other sife off the splitter valve never really did much in terms of intake in the first place off the pool a few feet away. If you try to run it off the original splitter valve, the suction will be weak. Totally agree use larger tubing directly into lower part of the pump with air valve.

    I know what you mean by scared! Im scared and Ive done something similar before... I actually cut larger holes for the 2" hose. Then used the other remaining small hose hooked up to the original paper pump that runs an intex light up fountain. Worked great and gave addition cleaning when needed. Ive been doing intext for 10 years. Just got a new one this year. I remember when these larger ones just had 2 2inch holes. One in and one out. I think they made it 2 small holes for safety reasons... so kids didnt get sucked and stuck by the one hole. If that were to happen, must be a hell of a pump! haha

      It's a split nose plunger valve which is part of several types of Intex Valves available and it's not required it's just how we set it up. There are many ways you can run your hoses depending on what types of valves and hose set up you have. It comes with the pool, but you can purchase it online and you would also need 2 hose clamps. Just ran across your channel. We’re about to buy an 18x52 just like yours. Any tips I should know about right from the get go? I’m reading that the 2100gph pump that comes in the pool kit isn’t quite big enough? Should I upgrade and sell the one it comes with? Also, I’m reading/seeing I should add a skimmer. Hence how I ran into this video. Hah. Is that a must do as well? Thanks in advance.

      Pump, yes, sell it (we did also) and get a 3000 gph, I just wanted more circulation, and it seems to do the trick. As far as the Intex skimmer, we really liked that one when we had it we just needed to go from the 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 for the Hayward skimmer install because of the vacuuming capabilities which is better than before. We used an adapter conversion kit that connects the bottom of the skimmer to those 1.5 Intex hoses. you might want to when setting up your pool make sure you get the area as level as possible, we have a video on that as well, it was our first pool video. whether you go with salt or not you will need to get your pool balanced after filling we have a local pool store just down the street to take our samples to for the supplies, we need to balance our pool. we decided to go to a saltwater intex system which we also made a video for. We enjoy the saltwater setup much better, for us we feel like it is easier to maintain.

      I’ve never owned a pool so this is all very new to me. What are the benefits of using a saltwater system over a regular system, besides not needing chlorine? Also this is mainly going to be for my wife and three kids. They’ll use it a lot during the summer when I’m out at work. I saw in one of your other videos you spray the pool frame down once you’re done swimming to get the salt build up off. My wife probably won’t remember to do this each time after they use the pool. Have you found that it’s necessary?

    How about the Hayward return jet?

    • @MoverandShaker
      @MoverandShaker  Рік тому

      At the time we did the switch the water was fairly high we didn't want to drain any more water out so we used the original return that came with the pool as opposed to the Hayward return yet. We ended up selling that..

      It's probably a little late and I apologize but we have these hoses, and they are sturdy well-built and work better. amzn.to/3N882pr

    I’m losing my mind with this!! I’ve been trying for weeks to install my skimmer and still no success… I can’t find for the life of me the adapter I need for the bottom of the skimmer to go to the hose. You would think this would be easy but no. I bought a part from the hardware store and when I screwed it into the hose, it screws on fine but the hose wiggles. I’m ready to burn my pool! Does anyone know an adapter to attach the hose to the skimmer???

    I know you said you plugged the two holes on the right both inside and outside. What did you use for the outside once the black plugs were inside the pool?

    • @MoverandShaker

      Honestly we really didn't need anything because the black plugs do the job where nothing leaks out. But just for fun we decided to just put some Is clear Plumbing silicone

    How do you vacuum the pool?

    • @MoverandShaker
      @MoverandShaker  Рік тому

      So you can purchase any standard vacuum hose and various attachments and connect them right to the skimmer using the vacuum attachment that comes with the Hayward skimmer. For us we purchased this hose amzn.to/3N91KWE and this Vacuum head amzn.to/43Hjn5n. they are what we use for more thorough cleanups. Now on the other hand we use two other types of vacuums one is for quick cleanups and that would be this one amzn.to/3IWh8mz and lastly we do have a robotic one that we use to get smaller particles and it runs by itself while you are in the house and that was is here amzn.to/42nTs1g. That is it. That is what we are currently using to vacuum.

    Can this be used as a skimmer and a filter?

    • @MoverandShaker
      @MoverandShaker  Рік тому

      No. They do make skimmer socks for fine particles but you have to have a pump in order to provide proper circulation of your water and for anything you add to your pool whether you have a saltwater pool or chemical pool. There is no way your going to be able to not invest in a pump as part of the main equipment in maintaining the cleanliness and sanitation of your water.
