This is the second intex pool i've added a hayward skimmer to. I actually mounted mine half way on the single ply part of liner and half on the double part to get a higher water level. been working good for 3 years now with no leaks.

You don't split the gasket!!!! It's made like so when you cut the liner the gasket, onside is on the outside and the other side goes on the inside of the pool. Then you screw the frame and the skinner box together. The gasket makes a water tight seal.
Goood observation! The skimmer butterfly gasket is made for a metal wall pool. The butterfly gasket goes over the metal wall and liner to prevent water from rusting the metal wall. Splitting the gasket in this instance is acceptable, otherwise you need to cut the skimmer hole bigger to fit t butterfly gasket. It would be difficult to cut accurately. I usually buy the old style s piece gasket to do this. This is done so you have a guide to cut the hole in the liner, as it’s not made for a soft side pool. Where did you get the salt chlorinator and how does it work? I have the exact same pool and I am curious now since you kept the original pump that came with the pool. I might mimic your setup if you don't mind.
For best results you need to re-circulate all the water of the pool 4 times/day in active season. So pool 10000L , you need 2500l/h pump if you want it to work 4 hours, and so. So these pump are bare minimum or really not adequate for these pools and larger pumps do much better job.
What did you do with the other 2 intakes though? Could them 2 intakes and the skimmer hose somehow connect before running to the pump so that all 3 intakes are being used now? I like the idea of using the original intakes still to help suck up particles floating beneath the water.

I only threaded the screw in about 2/3 of the way in so the screw would get a good bite into the skimmer holes when iactually put it together.
Great video somewhat informative. My only issues is that you don’t give part numbers or sizes of the modifications you performed. That would help us a lot

I ended up reversing the setup when I installed my skimmer. I talked to the local pool supply owner & she recommended putting the skimmer at the out flow opening. I did that & connected it to my sand filter. The old intakes now circulate my pool water 1000% better than the old system that was horrible! I upgraded my pump several months ago because of it really not working at all!

Into the pool is gone and the skimmer is cut in there. This is how I did mine. Works much better that before. I actually tried to set mine up when I got it that way but it wouldn’t work so I got the box skimmer then it did.
Highly recommend adding one of these to your pool. I won't have a pool without one. And yes it's nerve-wracking putting holes in your pool. Especially cutting the center hole out of the skimmer.
Man, I walked around this project a few times, going over the steps but I was still just nervous as hell. One goof and it might be hard to come back from!
It's common PVC plumbing, take your skimmer housing to the hardware store and find the PVC pipe parts that will add this. The skimmer is also made of PVC. I made another video explaining this
i installed 2 skimmers one of these for skimming / circulation, another wide mouth jacuzzi style skimmer up near the top of the pool above the waterline for Rain overflow Drainage, this eliminated the very costly need to build a French drain around the pool. if we get a heavy extended rain it drains out into a 1" pipe off into a storm drain creek. I also installed a shower drain into the bottom of the pool and created a sump area in the middle, this is also connected to the drain line with a 1" directional flow control valve.
Nice, I got same filter and saltwater chlorinator but an oval 16x10. My neighbors have 3 trees that have white flowers and they go straight into my pool, hope this skimmer helps keep it clean.
Thanks for the information, I'm going to put one on my pool, I've been thinking about a way to make my pool water to flow in a circle also, Thanks Again.
I did the same a year or so ago, but you are wrong about it not being necessary to upgrade the pump and filter. Why wouldn't you put a descent pump and filter on it? Why when you have solved the most vexing problem of converting to standard pvc would you not take advantage of the last 50 years of innovation? Jeez.
I did this modification this weekend. Man, every time I poked a hole through the liner for the screws I was nervous, but I finished up without a hitch and the water is flowing and filtering much better. My wife and I are going to go through the vacuum process tonight. The only thing I bought extra was a valve to put at the stock pump and a hose to go from that valve to the skimmer.
Thank you! the instructions do not tell you to cut the butterfly gasket in half, I couldn’t understand why they didn’t give you 2 gaskets. I appreciate your video!
Love all your videos !! I put this on my pool last year loved it!! Now have a bigger pool but it is so hard to get this skimmer on this time- cannot get these flat screws to poke through the liner any ideas - and what size is the ball valve ? Thank you oh I saw your answer to the valve in another comment - also of the birds in the background I’m originally from New Bedford 😀
1 year later, how is the skimmer and the pool seal holding? I would like to do this too for my intex pool. Just before I cut checking if the pool vinyl tears over time? or the seal around the hayward gasket start to seep? Thank you for posting
I really do not understand how breaking a seal in first step became so popular in all videos. It is completely wrong procedure. Your pool wall should fit inside this two sided seal. Getting something to work does not mean it is correct way of doing it.
I had the small mouth and my chlorine float thing always got stuck or sucked into it so I went with the wide mouth to stop it from happening or at least stop it from clogging it up.
The gasket is designed for use on a metal wall pool, not a vinyl wall pool, which is why it needs to be modified. Three years of use now with no issues, on the same gasket shown in this video.
Does this take care of all the little annoying black spec bugs that can’t seem to stay out of my pool? I just bought a wide mouth (was the only one available and was cheaper on offer up) it should be delivered tomorrow. I cannot wait to see how this improves my mental health
Nice job you can change the jet to a smaller one you just unscrew the white ring around the front we’re you adjust it they make a smaller one that has a smaller hole so that it can move your water around even faster
@@YogiTheBearManfrom experience. Check where you would place the skimmer. In order for it to be effective a big part of the face of the skimmer has to be above the water surface.
no surprise with the increased flow. Pumps are good at pushing water but not sucking. So keep the feed to the pump as big as possible, skimmer, larger hose etc will all make it better
how did you install the eyeball? We just got a hayward and the inlet eyeball assembly is humongous. If we use it, we'd have to cut a larger hole. so, how did you add that eyeball?
The return port cover unscrews, I used a hole saw to remove the middle, and installed the eyeball in the hole. If you have smaller ports in the pool, they give you gaskets in the assembly to cut a larger hole in the pool and seal it. You could also run PVC pipe through the smaller port and put the eyeball on the PVC, it won't flow as much water then though.
@@rowerwet I have the same pool and have everything installed except the eyeball. I came back here to see how it was installed as I figured the whole return assembly would need to be removed and the new Haywood one installed. I would like to use your method, but I am wondering what holds the eyeball in place? There is nothing for it to screw on to, so how does it stay in? Am I missing something?
@@rowerwet Definitely let us know when you get around to doing this because I would also be interested in something similar. Live in AZ so can definitely extend the pool time for many months. Thanks for sharing this video! It was incredibly helpful installing our own Hayward skimmer. I have a specific question for you: what kind of valve did you put below the Hayward skimmer at around the 16:00 mark? I’d like to order it for ours.
A regular old PVC ball valve from the plumbing section of home depot. I can't remember if it's 1.5 or 2" but if you take your skimmer to just about any hardware store, they should be able to help you figure out how to plumb a ball valve in
Anyone ever installed one of these on the Bestway Power Steel type pools? As the sides bulge instead of being flat as I'd like to install a skimmer on it.
Awesome...Thank you for sharing...just put the Intex skimmer on as I didn't understand others video on the Hayward and was nervous about cutting the pool...might have to reconsider.
One season with no issues, starting the second season next week. Thanks to the inner and outer way it clamps onto the pool, I can't see any really issues from stress developing
Can I please ask you, did your skimmer box have the clear plastic cup that goes in the bottom of the outside part before the basket goes in? My best ways one does but when it is in there is no suction, it’s like the cup is stopping the water from being sucked in. Do you know if it is needed?
Hi Thank you for a great video. Many professionals advise against doing this, so I am inquisitive about the durability. Can you give an update on how it is holding up after sitting there for two years? Can the liner withstand heavy activity and many waves?
Haven't put it back up yet this year due to spring being cold and rainy, still. I see no reason to believe the pool will have any issues with the skimmer going back on it this year (if we ever get summer weather). If anything, I expect one of the windows to fail as they're crazed and yellowed from sun exposure. My kids are rough on the pool, jumping off the deck, and getting it going around so fast you can't swim against it.
Thank you also is that a double pump your running on the left side ? I’m setting up my best way 20 x 48 pool this weekend already it comes with the pump on the right
Ok so I saw the comment concerning the reason you cut your own hole instead of using the existing skimmer hole. Since your pool didn’t already have a skimmer hole, has anyone added this to a pool that already had a skimmer hole? Does the opening for the skimmer fully envelope the existing hole?
Ok so I bought the skimmer at my local pool supply store. I wanna do that ball valve modification too. Do I still need the adapter that you mentioned at the beginning of the video if I’m going to plumb in the ball valve instead of utilizing the Intex pipes? I’ve also bought the upgraded spa flex pipe that you featured in one of your other videos. I also plan to replace the stock corrugated hose that connects my Hayward pump to sand filter housing as well.
It sucks all the leaves and floating debris off the surface of the pool, and doesn't restrict any flow to the pump. The original inlets are very restricted and limit pump efficiency
How on earth did you attach the eyeball thingy to the existing outlet?? did you hole saw it & then glue that in place?? I been trying to figure this out for awhile, I have the same. set up as you?? Thanks for any help
I hope someone can give me an answer here. If you have a 48" deep above ground pool like this, and you install the skimmer, DO YOU LOSE some depth of water with having a skimmer? You already don't have much depth with a 48" pool as it is so i am trying to figure out if adding a skimmer is worth it with these pools. Thank you

Do you have the link at all for turn off switch that sits just under the skimmer? Thanks
It's common PVC plumbing, take your skimmer housing to the hardware store and find the PVC pipe parts that will add this. The skimmer is also made of PVC.
I made another video explaining this
Just used this method worked like a charm! Thanks from a dad that now looks like a champ!
Does your pump aerate a bit while the vacuum adapter is on? I'm having that issue with mine so I stopped using it till I figure out the issue.
Do you have the part number for the adapter? I have the Bestway 9x18x48.
Circulation is key, you are right there, but you also need to shock the pool to get rid of the haze.
I run my pump constantly all season..1 shock pack a week an a 3"pool tablet in skimmer.. stays clear even with the trees I have
@@davidprosper9057 So do you just put the tablet in the skimmer basket???
Not the top one the lower basket at the pump......you can put it in the upper skimmer basket....I use to..
Skimmer is a good upgrade, but a new pump and filter is the best upgrade you can make for these pools. They are laughably undersized
He says he has a pump and filter upgrade. Have to pay attention
@@Redrachell4 he also said that the skimmer is the *best* upgrade. Have to pay attention
i installed 2 skimmers one of these for skimming / circulation, another wide mouth jacuzzi style skimmer up near the top of the pool above the waterline for Rain overflow Drainage, this eliminated the very costly need to build a French drain around the pool. if we get a heavy extended rain it drains out into a 1" pipe off into a storm drain creek. I also installed a shower drain into the bottom of the pool and created a sump area in the middle, this is also connected to the drain line with a 1" directional flow control valve.
Why did you put a shower drain in the middle of the pool?
Nice, I got same filter and saltwater chlorinator but an oval 16x10. My neighbors have 3 trees that have white flowers and they go straight into my pool, hope this skimmer helps keep it clean.
People don’t cut that gasket. It’s like that for a reason. Some people are just idiots
Thanks for the information, I'm going to put one on my pool, I've been thinking about a way to make my pool water to flow in a circle also, Thanks Again.
Those plates sucks just take the basket out on the skimmer and stick your vacuum hose directly into the skimmer hole
Bro, you don't cut the gasket, that's that way its supposed to be designed...
Did this to my pool, best upgrade ever! I cut the outlet for the skimmer and the inlets for my exhaust.
I did the same a year or so ago, but you are wrong about it not being necessary to upgrade the pump and filter. Why wouldn't you put a descent pump and filter on it? Why when you have solved the most vexing problem of converting to standard pvc would you not take advantage of the last 50 years of innovation? Jeez.
Personal choice, I suppose.
word of advice, put it as high up as you can get it or it limits you pool depth
Hey bud thanks for putting this out. You kept it simple and made my job easier.👊🏾
Do u have a video for setting up the inlet eyeball that comes with it
I did this modification this weekend.
You're not supposed to cut it
Love all your videos !!
I poked the holes through with a pick first I believe
1 year later, how is the skimmer and the pool seal holding? I would like to do this too for my intex pool. Just before I cut checking if the pool vinyl tears over time? or the seal around the hayward gasket start to seep? Thank you for posting
Mine never leaked once I got the screws tightened down enough. The vinyl is fiberglass reinforced, tearing is very unlikely
Why are the two lines still hooked up after you installed the skimmer? They appear to be worthless at this point. Do they have a purpose?
My guess is he just needs to plug the holes. Currently having them hooked up he is keeping the water in the pool lol.
Nice job. Now make a video of an upgrade to a real pool.
I put a 1 horse pump and sand filter on my pool and it totally blows away that thing that came with the pool. That thing is garbage.
Thanks a million. Your instructions were spot on. Keep up the good content.
Hi can you shoot me the links to where you got all the stuff you used to install that skimmer please ..... by the way thank you so much for the video
The adapter is in the description now
I really do not understand how breaking a seal in first step became so popular in all videos. It is completely wrong procedure. Your pool wall should fit inside this two sided seal. Getting something to work does not mean it is correct way of doing it.
Hi, thanks for the video. Do you mind sharing the size of the ball valve? Thank you!
1.5" PVC
@@rowerwet Thank you! :)
model number of this skimmer? thanks!
I had the small mouth and my chlorine float thing always got stuck or sucked into it so I went with the wide mouth to stop it from happening or at least stop it from clogging it up.
Why are you cutting the gasket??? You shouldn't be doing that!
The gasket is designed for use on a metal wall pool, not a vinyl wall pool, which is why it needs to be modified.
Three years of use now with no issues, on the same gasket shown in this video.
GAME 4560 40mm to 1 1/2 Inch Conversion Kit (For Intex & Bestway Pools)
Does this take care of all the little annoying black spec bugs that can’t seem to stay out of my pool? I just bought a wide mouth (was the only one available and was cheaper on offer up) it should be delivered tomorrow. I cannot wait to see how this improves my mental health
Nice job you can change the jet to a smaller one you just unscrew the white ring around the front we’re you adjust it they make a smaller one that has a smaller hole so that it can move your water around even faster
the downside to the skimmer is losing 6 inches in depth of water. you go from just under 48 inches to only 42 inches..
None of the videos I’ve seen so far touch on this, are you assuming this or is it based on experience?
@@YogiTheBearManfrom experience. Check where you would place the skimmer. In order for it to be effective a big part of the face of the skimmer has to be above the water surface.
Get a sand filter. After backwash, add about half a pound od DE ,, diatomaceous earth.. For filtering performance
What size ball valve did u put on
After two years, any leaks from splitting the butterfly gasket?
no surprise with the increased flow. Pumps are good at pushing water but not sucking. So keep the feed to the pump as big as possible, skimmer, larger hose etc will all make it better
Did this to my pool last year along with a 3,000 gph sand filter pump. Best money ever spent on a pool.
how did you install the eyeball?
Thank You, I want to install this
Whats the name of that grey adapter like a coupling under the skimmer at first of the video?
I found it is a comment below ,👍
What did you do with the 2 original ports did you just blank them off and now only using the skimmer. ?
Yes, I plan on using a small pump and a solar heater with them, but haven't built it yet
@@rowerwet Definitely let us know when you get around to doing this because I would also be interested in something similar. Live in AZ so can definitely extend the pool time for many months. Also curious if you got info on what you are planning (what kind of pump or solar heater). Great videos by the way!
I can't remember if it's 1.5 or 2" but if you take your skimmer to just about any hardware store, they should be able to help you figure out how to plumb a ball valve in
Thank you thank you thank you for including the part description for the adapter!!!!!!
Anyone ever installed one of these on the Bestway Power Steel type pools? As the sides bulge instead of being flat as I'd like to install a skimmer on it.
The sides on mine actually slightly bulge, you should be fine, but hopefully someone will give you a better answer
Great job from a pool professional.
Looks like u got 2 pumps or ones converter ? So whats the link to that direction im surprised they dont come with that
Awesome...Thank you for sharing...just put the Intex skimmer on as I didn't understand others video on the Hayward and was nervous about cutting the pool...might have to reconsider.
What about not having the reinforcing patch of PVC liner where you're putting the skimmer? Does it wear out the side of the pool?
One season with no issues, starting the second season next week. Thanks to the inner and outer way it clamps onto the pool, I can't see any really issues from stress developing
is skimmer enough for water circulation?
More than enough, and I have an oversized pump.
Can I please ask you, did your skimmer box have the clear plastic cup that goes in the bottom of the outside part before the basket goes in? My best ways one does but when it is in there is no suction, it’s like the cup is stopping the water from being sucked in. Do you know if it is needed?
Mine does not, it definitely seems like that would block the flow
Hi
Thank you for a great video.
What can I use to stop up the old holes from the filter when I add my skimmer
I found rubber plugs that worked, try whiskey nip bottles or similar plastic items.
Thank you also is that a double pump your running on the left side ? I’m setting up my best way 20 x 48 pool this weekend already it comes with the pump on the right
@@heatherrivera3831 the other thing is a chlorine generator, we run a salt water pool
I also plan to replace the stock corrugated hose that connects my Hayward pump to sand filter housing as well.
why is the skimmer better than the normal inlets?
It sucks all the leaves and floating debris off the surface of the pool, and doesn't restrict any flow to the pump.
The original inlets are very restricted and limit pump efficiency
thank you, great job. helped me out alot
How on earth did you attach the eyeball thingy to the existing outlet?? did you hole saw it & then glue that in place?? I been trying to figure this out for awhile, I have the same. set up as you?? Thanks for any help
What did you end up doing?
I hope someone can give me an answer here. If you have a 48" deep above ground pool like this, and you install the skimmer, DO YOU LOSE some depth of water with having a skimmer? You already don't have much depth with a 48" pool as it is so i am trying to figure out if adding a skimmer is worth it with these pools. Thank you
2-4 inches, I have kids who splash a lot out anyway.
Great video attaching the skimmer to the pool but I can't find the size adapter we need to hook the skimmer to the hose. I know you ordered it separately from Amazon can you please tell me the what they've called, sizes and and # that will help me find it. Gonna try this but wanna have my ducks in a row!! Thanks

Just wondered why you use the outake valves instead of the intake for the vacuum?
Do you have a link for the thread adapter?
