She wore a mask and then after wearing it only covering her mouth the entire time she then just pulled it down completely, totally negating the entire point of wearing one in the first place We’re in Italy and are allowed to meet up now.

get a reusable half face respirator. Due to the separate exhaust valve, they don't restrict breathing or increase CO2 levels like disposable face masks do. They look ridiculous, but they actually work to filter air too, being able to get a full seal on teh face, that disposable masks can't achieve & if you have asthma severe enough for your doctor to be discussing a mask's impacts on your breathing, you're going to be at high risk with this virus & so need to protect yourself. Be sure to shower & wash everything down when you get home, or wearing it is useless!
I have asthma myself & wore my half face respirator almost everytime I went outside for nearly 3 months this summer, due to living in Australia, where we had constant extreme smoke. Anytime I tried to go out without it on, I immediately got a severe asthma attack. It got to the point where it became such a routine for me that on one occasion I took it off to talk to someone, cause I didn't think the smoke was THAT bad that day & I found there wasn't ANY smoke in the air & I was walking around looking like an idiot for nothing lol At the opposite extreme, I tried to sunbake one day & had to give up, because not only was there no sun due to teh smoke, but I got covered in ash & my eyes were filled with it, but I couldn't smell any of it & had no trouble at all breathing because of the mask, so yeh a half face respirator will work if you need a mask for this virus :)

One could guess it would be a 5% infection rate, based on 33% (group B infection rate) of 15% (group A infection rate). It's logical unless the specific viruses that made their way through the infected hamsters' mask were exceptionally good at breaking through barriers and would go through the healthy hamsters' mask as well.

1:24 I think the flaw in this argument is the assumption that the distances listed by JAMA are fixed, when they depend to a great extent on the amount of circulation in the space. Another faulty assumption is that getting exposed to any virus at all would be a catastrophe when the truth is that the vast majority of people who acquire immunity (20% of NYC residents) are never seriously ill, so avoiding the virus altogether is not only unrealistic for most people, it it will put off herd immunity and force us to live in this siege environment for even longer. I can see requiring masks on sealed subway cars and buses, but if you can walk through the supermarket keeping a 6 foot distance most of the time and keeping your mouth shut most of the time, you won't be a threat to anyone. Meanwhile, masks are terrible for the people who use them, starving the body of oxygen, raising blood pressure and re-introducing the bacteria, fungus, mold and viruses that the lungs are trying to expel, so they should be worn only when absolutely needed. And, finally, I have to ask, why are the public transportation vehicles still running in so many places with all the windows sealed? The first response to this virus should have been to replace windows with screens and grates in as many normally sealed spaces as possible, including vehicles, bars and shops; dealing with the cold would be far healthier than wearing little petri dishes on our faces all day. Note that the following story covers not only a collapsed lung, but 3 deaths in addition to that, although the conditions that led to this were far more extreme than a trip to the store. There was also a woman in NJ who passed out behind the wheel after driving with a mask for a number of hours.

@David Liptrot the SARS-COV-2 virus is highly contagious and lethal. It's airborne and spread by particulate and aerosolized droplets. So a well fitting mask is essential. The whole point is to filter the air one breathes so as not to breathe in virus.
Surgeon's masks are designed to keep the surgeon's spittle and sweat inside the mask and out of the patient's open wound during surgery. Surgeon's masks are designed with an air gap on sides that would let unfiltered air in. So there is a big difference between types of masks and the effectiveness of masks in preventing airborne infection.
At this point the idea is to try and get people to wear masks so asymptomatic carriers and symptomatic carriers of COVID-19 do not spread their virus particles to others. I frankly think it would be a lot more effective to just tell the truth to the public and say " Hey we are dealing with a highly contagious and lethal AIRBORNE virus that isn't going away anytime soon. " But the government knows there are not enough P95 masks and doesn't want people to panic. So they are not being direct and to the point. I wonder how many people would resist mask wearing if they knew the truth.
I have been wearing a respirator, eye Protection and gloves in public since January 2020.( I refinish furniture for a hobby. )I got a lot of criticism for it. Now I personally know 18 people who have died of COVID-19. Tried to warn people. They didn't listen. It's very sad. I'll be wear my PPEs in public for many years to come. I am sending love and hugs from Washington State, USA, Jeanne of In Loving Hands Counseling and ASMR.

What kind of mask was used in the experiment?
It seems to me to be of paramount importance to know this, as a cloth mask can be a vector for infection to the wearer because of the moisture generated after a few minutes. A damp mask permits transmission through cloth, particularly if it touches the mouth. If hamsters were infected despite dry mask simulation, it would be interesting to see the result if the "mask" was damp.

    • @globetwig4401
      @globetwig4401 4 роки тому

I'm in the pro mask camp but it's a very good question. If some measures were taken to ensure that both the inside and outside of masks remain moisture free then this can only be a good thing. A changeable moisture absorbing layer on the inside of a mask would suffice, as well as regularly changing a moist mask for a dry one when in public. It's worth taking as many precautions as make you feel safe and it may be found to be necessary at some point - so still worth getting the answer.

cloth masks actually did better than surgical masks in stopping covid-19 in a human study www.acpjournals.org/doi/10.7326/M20-1342
In reality, the masks were beyond sneeze distance from the hamsters faces, so the materials & dampness are irrelevant as a result. All this study did was replicate the Korean call centre results, where cases were dependent on air flow in the area. Set up a fan blowing from infected to healthy & they will get sick. set up a barrier between the 2, to divert air elsewhere & they're less likely to get sick. Continuing the study to give a full week of exposure makes it useless though anyway, as incubation period can be anything from one day, so for all we know, 1 hamster got infected from a single stray droplet & then passed it on to all hte other hamsters in his cage

I have heard other doctors speak critically of the suggested policy of widespread mask-wearing. They have described various risk factors that you haven't mentioned. I would be interested in hearing your understanding of how scientific consensus works, and just how many studies are required before that consensus can begin to form.

      @misterlyle. 4 роки тому +2

@@PikesCore24 YT didn't notify me of your comment (a recurring problem). Everything you do has risks attached, including deciding to wear or not to wear a mask. I suspect a common problem is believing that the mask will protect you in a situation where it doesn't. An infected person who sneezes in front of you is releasing a virus-filled spray that is quite capable of passing through most masks and face coverings. The N95 mask is the best one, but even it doesn't provide 100% protection. There are numerous other risks, including reduced oxygen supply, cross-contamination from touching the outside of the mask, gaps around the edges, and more. Educating yourself, and social distancing are more effective strategies.

    • @misterlyle.
      @misterlyle. 4 роки тому +1

@@johnlvs2run I disagree. There are very smart (but misguided) people who advocate wearing a face covering. The problem is the science doesn't actually support this policy at this time. It is a "strong feeling" or personal opinion of various experts that could turn out to be entirely wrong. Social distancing is a better policy, and ordinary vigilance while out among people.

    • @abhalla
      @abhalla 4 роки тому

@@misterlyle. SARS-CoV-2 is about 120 nanometers in diameter. The filtration efficiency of N95 masks with sodium chloride upstream propelled particles of size 120 nm can have between roughly 95% to 100% coverage of particles (multimedia.3m.com/mws/media/376179O/nanotechnology-and-respirator-use.pdf). Wearable cloth coverings vary in efficacy but still range between 80% and 100% with sodium chloride upstream propelled particle of size 120 nm at approximately the same rate of flow (pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsnano.0c03252, Figure 2 and Figure 3). Silk seems to be the best material. Nevertheless, wearable cloth coverings worn correctly, with proper procedures in place to stop cross-contamination, as Dr. Campbell suggests, are without a doubt better than nothing. The people who advocate face covering are not misguided.
Unfortunately, the enforcement of social distancing policy as you say does not seem like it will happen to full efficiency. It is very hard to make people follow such policies in the western world. We have seen in the past few days what social distancing means: Riots, picnics, and protests. Doctors are only advising the correct application of cloth based face masks to people who choose not to follow social distancing guidelines.

Something in the order of 60% of communication consists of body language, and your facial expressions is a HUGE part of that. This means you can't judge what a masked person is thinking, the emotional state of that person, and even if you talk to the person, the communication is more akin to talking to a machine. I can see several problems with this experiment, though. For one, the masks weren't actually on the hamsters, they were on their cages. So the hamsters weren't actually coming into contact with the masks themselves. Of course it would be highly difficult to get masks on the hamsters in the first place because they would fight them and try to get them back off as much as they could. People often do the same thing because the masks irritate their skin around their nose and their mouth. So they are often touching and adjusting the masks with their hands and scratching the skin around their nose and mouth which studies have shown pretty much negate their effectiveness. When I've worn a mask for more than a few seconds my chin starts to itch terribly. I suspect this is because, as a man, I have facial hair growing all the time. Even after I've shaved, a few hours later I have stubble because my facial hair doesn't stop growing. So I can shave in the morning and by lunch time I have stubble. Put a mask on and my chin itches like crazy. I would have to shave every few hours to keep that from happening.
Another problem with the experiment is that the hamsters were kept in separate cages. To be more like a real world experiment they would have to take the infected hamsters out of their cage and let the uninfected hamsters in their cage for a while. This would be like infected people going into public places with masks on and then leaving and then uninfected people coming into the same public place later, which is more real world where people are touching the same surfaces in public places all the time. Masks aren't going to have any effect on that.
There was another experiment I saw a video on a few days ago that was interesting. In it the staff of several hospitals was divided into 2 groups--group one wore N95 masks while group 2 wore surgical masks. They wore these masks thru flu season last year. The group that wore N95 masks had about 8% contract the flu anyway, while the group that wore surgical masks had about 7% contract the flu anyway. This seems counter intuitive since N95 masks are supposedly better at filtering out smaller particles than surgical masks. In the video it was speculated that perhaps people touching and adjusting their masks because of skin irritation by them led to the higher infection rate by those wearing N95 masks because those masks were more secure on their faces and therefore irritated their facial skin more. I thought that they needed a control group who wore NO masks just to see if even wearing a mask made any difference. But of course hospital staff have to wear masks because of their job. But then I searched online to see what the average was for people in the US contracting the flu in an average flu season and was surprised to find one source that said on average about 8% of people in the US contract the flu every year. That's about the same percentage of people who contracted the flu wearing the masks in hospitals during flu season last year! Maybe they were subjected to a higher viral load because they worked in a hospital environment during flu season. But still. Hmmmm.

Most masks including FFP3 and FFP3 masks are specifically designed to protect the person wearing the mask. It may offer very little protection to others as suggested. This is due to the one way valve that allows unfiltered exhaled air out. Therefore if someone sneezes, coughs or even breathes the the positive pressure within the mask will be released into the air via the valve as this is path of least resistance. This exhaled air will not have been filtered!! Therefore more sophisticated masks such as these should be reserved for NHS staff as the priority should be that they protect themselves. I completely agree that non valved masks or home made face coverings should be worn in the community by everyone. There should be lower transmission rates than the hamster tests as both the infected and non infected persons will be wearing a mask. I just wish the UK government would wake up and encourage face coverings!!

The better anecdote is comparing people standing next to each other and peeing. If they're both naked, the peeing guy will get his pee all over the naked non peeing guy. If the non peeing guy is wearing pants, he'll get some pee on him but not as much, but still a lot, depending on the porousness of the pants. If the peeing guy is wearing pants, he'll have the pee mostly on him with only some pee getting outside the pants and onto the floor, but if the non peeing guy's still not wearing pants and/or socks, he might still get some on his skin but even less. Now if they're both wearing pants and/or socks, there's the least chance of pee getting on the non peeing guy and even in the slight chance, there's the least amount of pee. A crude, but very effective description...

reality is, it appears to be not factual, but rather just a quick fix to con people & get them happily going back to work to restore the economy, thinking they're safe because of their mask when it's purely a placebo.
Hamsters with a mask attached to a cage wall over sneeze distance from their faces is NOT a valid scientific experiment on this! An experiment like that is only going to get massive coverage on all media if it's consistent with the line the government/s want told.
All mask wearing countries have seen spikes in cases weeks after containing the majority of cases & enforcing mask wearing for all, showing the masks are NOT working! The only countries that haven't seen these spikes are New Zealand & Australia, who do NOT wear masks! The exception being that Australia saw one new cluster of cases in an abattoir, where workers wear masks for hygiene reasons. Remove the masks & the clusters vanish, that's the reality!
Australia & New Zealand however are insisting people are to be tested & then stay home if they have even a sniffle. Countries like the US & UK aren't willing to encourage that, because it will impact on productivity & so they roll out this fake "wear a mask & your protected" propaganda

Such a simple concept for a study. Sometimes it's the simple solutions that are effective, and not overthinking the problem.
    Thanks again Dr. John,

Dr Campbell, thank you so much for doing this
video. It has frustrated me so much that the UK Govt and its' scientific
advisors have almost obsessively focussed on dissuading us to not wear masks,
even telling us it could put us at more risk at some points, and even now only
"if we want to - not mandatory" when in public internal places.
I have had really positive personal success with reducing colds by wearing them in planes and public transport for months before
this outbreak happened that I have been convinced about their value also for
reducing risks. Before I would get regular colds and this often resulted in 2-3
months long exhausting coughs and it would have roll on effects to other
aspects of my health. So finding ways to stop this was very important to me for
my quality of life. Mask wearing in public transport myself has made a
    significant difference to me.
And as you say, the empirical evidence is also
clear from the countries which have worn them in public and also had best
success in reducing the scale of the outbreak. I understood from a presentation
by Professor Lum as part of the UK Health and Social Care Committee expert
panel discussion the other day that in Hong Kong they also didn't really lock
down - but they had 97% of the population wearing masks by March (along with
the track and trace and quarantine) and in January they mandated all care
workers must wear masks. They did not have a single COVID infection in care homes
and not a single health worker death. Now that's really impressive.
I have seen in my own work that sometimes an
'expert' has a particular take on something and then because they say it loud
enough and they are respected, many other people start saying the same thing
and it becomes a kind of 'fact' that others are looked down upon if they
contradict. I think that is also what has probably happened here and it hasn't
helped that the WHO also didn't come out and strongly advise to wear them,
giving more justification to a government like ours to ignore the experience in
the countries which previously fought SARS.
Hopefully now that we can see how badly we have
done against these other countries, this will be revisited, but that needs the
experts advising the government to also be a bit humble about their
misjudgement... I am doubtful as to whether that will happen... although I
guess they can just say... "with the new evidence... we are now changing
our advice".. even though the evidence has been there for some time.
In case you are interested please also see this
post re some mapping we did on the UK govt guidance to care homes and the major
issues with it. We continue to be very concerned about the fact that the
government still continues to not talk about asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic
transmission (thank you also for raising this in your video) - as until it
focusses on this in its guidance to care homes the risk of spread will
    continue:

What drives me crazy is that authority and experts in the West were telling people not to wear them!! It's hard to find trustworthy sources of information, but this doctor is one I do trust.

Thanks Dr. John. Thank you for the detailed explanation on this situation. I'm here in Singapore. We were advised to wear mask in public places all the time. If caught, there's a fine for not wearing. Stay safe Dr. John.

You probably meant to say face mask wearing was made mandatory in Singapore. The same should apply here...by simply asking to wear one would not work as there will always be people who will feel it does not apply to them.

Edinburgh University did a fantastic study months ago and the results were fantastic!! They tested a range of different masks and fabrics and everyone showed great rates of protection. I immediately bought a small amount of masks for my family and found out how we could effectively and safely rotate them, so they could be reworn many more times than they normally would.
We were amongst the first to use them locally and worried about it simply because we were told by Government, we would be talking those masks away from frontline staff. I thought it was unlikely the seller l bought from on ebay, would be approached by my Government to supply masks for our hospitals. So we soon got over those concerns and none of us leave the house without one anymore.

Hi Kevin. Ignore the harrassers. I think it's fascinating how things that are so obvious (benefits wearing masks) are looked upon with a blind eye, when the (outdated) social norms say to do otherwise. I also think the early recommendations to not wear mask were to conserve masks for hospital workers, prevent hoarding, and (sadly) to allow facial recognition software to keep working. one also can't ignore the outdated social stigma against masks that sadly seems to exist. peace, carol
