I always tell folks who come up to me saying that mask doesn't help to insist the next time a surgeon is working on a loved one that the team not wear a mask. I wear a mask to protect those I come in contact with more than to protect myself. The more people that mask up the fewer infections there will be. Not just covid!
100% anecdotal - I work in healthcare, have worn a mask on the job, removing to only drink or eat on break. I have and continue to mask in public and wear a mask in large groups, public settings and pay attention to washing my hands, using sanitizer, washing my hands correctly and thoroughly with a big focus on when I am getting ready to eat. I have provided care to COVID positive patients, followed all precautions and wore every bit of provided protective gear and worked in the ER. I am vaccinated and boosted. I also have not once tested positive for COVID. Maybe I am just lucky but I will continue current practices..
All of this is 100% anecdotal. Why even talk to this person who presents no evidence supporting her position, and mounting evidence shows a lack of effectiveness? I want to see studies with 100s of thousands of people participating.
We have 5 different senior residences. The one that had no masks had the highest number of covid deaths, just the staff wearing medical masks was the second highest deaths, the lowest deaths was staff wearing N-95 or surgical masks plus face shields.
And thr CDC had many many studies that show masks ARE effective against covid. Please let me know if you need a link to something a little more scientific.

Anne6621 Good for you, thanks for sharing your experience and telling the troll that's been harassing everyone who says they will continue to wear masks.
As a senior with pre existing conditions, I can only speak from my own experience, and that is since I started wearing a mask in public since February of 2020, I have not experienced a single day of discomfort related to any virus, so I'm going out on a limb here and thinking there's some sort of connection with that and my personal experience.
Another senior here who started wearing a mask while CDC and others were discussing the efficacy (or something) and continues to do so; I've had six verified exposures and ridden public transport a couple of times a week since the start of the pandemic without getting the infection. I'm also a big proponent of thorough hand washing. Have been for decades. Forget 20 seconds; I do closer to a minute when I come in from my daily activities. It's essential to get between the fingers and under the fingernails, then rinse and repeat.
I've now been in the room with hundreds of COVID patients, and I've had it twice. I've taken care of dozens of TB patients over my nursing career, some with drug resistant strains, with an N-95 mask, and I've never contracted TB. I can't remember how many flu patients I've taken care of in just a surgical mask and not contracted flu. Even if by some whim of fate they decide to let up on mask requirements at hospitals, I will continue to wear mine. Their efficacy has been demonstrated to me repeatedly.
I've worked in health care since early 2000s. First in the military, now as a critical care RN. Before the mandatory mast usage in hospitals during the pandemic, we were not required to wear mask unless patient was in dropplet or airborne precautions, or was getting a bedside procedure requiring sterile field. I always got sick for almost 20 every year with colds or the flu most likely contracted in the hospital during the non mandatory times. After the start of the mandatory mask usage in hospitals, I have not contracted any respiratory infections since 2020. I took a vacation last year and did not use a mask for weeks. Sure enough got sick with Omicron.
Got covid only vaccines, wore masks, faithfully do hand hygiene. Used to get colds flu, since covid, none. Only had foodborne illness, twice. Only one in my family and office who has not had covid, I am the oldest in my office, in my 60's. I continue hand hygiene and mask wearing in public indoor places. I have gotten used to not getting sick, I reserve my sick days for mental burnout due to staff shortages resulted from city budget issues.
Greetings from South Korea... can't believe that in Europe and the US you still have this type of discussion. Mask Mandate here was (almost) completely lifted about a month ago and still about 60 percent wear it almost everywhere. nothing bad about it. Since Omicron, Mask Mandates seem not to be needed anymore but for Alpha and Delta it was really helpful. not because suddenly masks don't work but the virus is for most people not that dangerous anymore (Especially if you are vaccinated or have natural immunity.
Except for long COVID. Apparently about 10% of people who get COVID develop long COVID, and some of them have such debilitating symptoms that they cannot do anything anymore. Taking a shower for them is extremely draining for example.
Masks actually do bring benefits not just to keep others vulnerable from being sick, but I haven't caught a heavy cold in forever. Even though COVID has become a thing of the past, as far as a lot of people are concerned, I still wear my masks even now.
They're also great for swearing at idiots in supermarkets who block aisles or hit you with their trolley while jabbering on their phones. What? I didn't say anything!

"We are uncertain whether wearing masks or N95/P2 respirators helps to slow the spread of respiratory viruses based on the studies we assessed." Cochrane review. January 2023
Excellent interview. The lack of enough N-95 mask at the beginning of the pandemic shows how poorly the US was prepared for not only a respiratory virus pandemic but also poorly prepared for a biological or biochemical attack.
There were plenty available, the problem came with people hoarding at the beginning of the pandemic. Masks, toilet paper, and a variety of others things were selfishly hoarded by many people causing shortages and supply chain issues.
@QuestionEverything There was a stockpile of preparedness but as Jared Kushner accidentally said on mic and camera. That stockpile is for us, we are the Federal Government and it is for us to use.
My work industry required multiple tests a week, mask mandates, and all kind of other protocol. Many people skirted around the mask rules by only wearing when checked or wearing improperly , but I can't remember whole departments catching it all at once. I think overall it lessened the spread. imo
Now what I heard was... decent people who help to protect others as well as themselves tend to do better in a pandemic environment. It's not rocket science people. If you're a selfish jerk that only cares about your immediate comfort, instead of the good of society, maybe you should keep your affairs in order.
When I argue with people about masks, I always tell them that the same benefits and protections of wearing a mask, are the same as a furnace filter in your house, an air filter in your car, etc. While none of them are 100% effective in filtering pollutants, they add a barrier of protection for harmful particles. I end with telling them, if you're so confident that masks don't work, then go take the filters out of your furnace and car. They obviously do not work? I never thought I would see a time, where so many in society would completely deny science and logic.
I think those people have always existed, and live among us but a large scale crisis gives them an opportunity. We are a diverse species lol. I wouldn't normally be bothered as it's Darwinian natural selection but of course it impacts others.
Why don't they put a mask over your car exhaust then. Because it would do nothing. . Your furnace filter and car filters do not filter viruses. Filters work on a macro level. Filtering dust and particles that might get in your gas tank. Viruses are in the micro level. You can't even see them if you use a regular microscope. You need an electron microscope to even view them You could 100% remove your house and car filters if you were using them to filter viruses because they cannot filter viruses.
I got this hardhat while working for a major concrete sawing, drilling and demolition company. Concrete dust causes silicosis and masking was a major issue. I've had to wear masks doing really hard work when it was so hot and humid they got soaked while I wore them. I was disgusted with the anti-mask BS I've heard during the pandemic. I've worn a construction n95 under a bandanna in enclosed public spaces and I havent had a cold, flu, RSV, covid etc. for over 3 years. My only respiratory problem is mild allegies when I'm home and not masked. Covid's effect are so unpredictable, that's my main concern.
Thank you for this. My mom had pulmonary hypertension, and a paralyzed hemi diaphragm. She had trouble just breathing. But she NEVER had a problem wearing a mask. She wore one without fail, even at her nursing facility. She never got COVID, even though others did in the same facility. Masks work. Period.
My husband (DAV, COPD, allergies) used to get admitted to the hospital at least twice a year with some type of condition that would start as cold/flu/ sinus infection but end up as pneumonia. Anything anyone else had, he caught. Since masking bc of Covid-19, he has only been once and that was his heart. We will keep the masks. ❤
this almost sounded like " we havent gathered very good data on mask mandates and also people arent taking it seriously, also nobody wants to wear them anymore so lets just not do it." I'll admit that there is probably more data on seatbelt mandates, but couldnt you just make the same argument for a seatbelt mandate was not being enforced on a large scale? I feel like this arguement didnt make much logical sense when masking was never really enforced by a law.
I will continue to mask in public, maybe forever. I like not being sick, and I like protecting others if I am ill and don't know it. Every friend and family member I know who dropped their guard got COVID. Of those, several have long COVID, and one now has a pacemaker because of long COVID. One other has chronic lung issues, and a mass on the lung. All because they decided to drop their masking and social distance. Not me.
Cochrane's meta analysis made the single most important observation that needs to be all caps underlined: It's not whether the mask were required by mandate. It's that all these studies are always very flawed. Researchers have yet to come up with a way to control how people wear masks (correctly or under their noses), if its a high quality mask, and whether they are always wearing them around family members who never mask. That's far, far too many variables and biases to ever expect data that can be relied on. What this doctor fails to mention is that many people lost family members to covid or had hospitalization. Many people experienced this who they themselve have cancers, diabetes, organ transplant patients, genetic predispositions to severe respiratory infections, and loved ones at home who are high risk. The trauma of losing a family member while themselves having high risks is daily stress management battle. Masks allowed them to cope with that anxiety and stress. Even if its just a placebo effect if it lowers overall stress in high stress enviroments (hospitals, medical offices) then that's a tremendous aid.

@@russellmania5349 Have you polled "most people"? The people that I know that mask have a variety of masks to suit whether they are lower risk (uncrowded areas for a few minutes) or higher risk (indoor public areas). Any mask however that is tight and worn covering the nose and mouth is better than none. At any rate, other than Feb 2020 (as I do not know if I had covid or just a very bad respiratory cold or flu), I have not to my knowledge caught covid. I have not once gone without a mask, am careful who I let enter my abode, and have an air purifier in my home. I cannot afford to get ill.
If epidemiologists want to get good data on masking in public as a preventative measure they should look at the transplant community. We already tended to wear masks before covid and now masking in public is pretty much universal. Although this isn't really up for debate, they work. I wear a mask anytime I'm indoors anywhere but my own home.
I have been wearing a P100 respirator or Honeywell full facemask PAPR in public since day one and not changing anytime soon. Perfect comfort but hard to talk but more than worth the safety. When I ran a molecular biology lab at university I would never dream of exposing lab workers or students to infectious organisms without FULL protection even if odds of exposure were low. With covid in known circulation a P100 respirator is the only possible recommendation.
I admire your courage Markas. I wore for everyday use in any building from the very start a P100 elastomeric half-mask fitted with a P3 threaded paticulate filter can. I modified the exhalation port to take a second P3 can then I couldn't be criticised for not cleaning output air. Experienced much ridicule from some people but never tested positive. No issues with steamed up glasses, no build up of moisture, no contamination of hands, no constant adjusting, no difficulty speaking or claustrophobia, no disposal issues, long life filters - same as you I imagine. Always wore wrap around glasses too, and was religious with hand sanitisation. I did consider full facepiece but felt the compromise I had was ok To see the wholly infeffective cloth mask use by some of the community and the disregard of distancing I realised its down to me to take measures. I'm a medical professional and recognised early on that mass normalcy bias was going to be a big problem.

Very disappointing session. A subscriber and avid listener. The basic question is, do masks work (the title). The bare essence is, if worn properly in all ways, how much does a mask (take an n95) reduce the pathogen from crossing the barrier. Effectiveness of size (virus vs bacteria, etc.), longevity of use reuse. That is a quantitative measure, governed by laws of physics. (assume consistency of mask quality). Answer that question. By convoluting the meaning of the question because of imprecise language, the general public loses faith.
Very difficult study to perform, but one study in a hospital in Wuhan in the first few months of the pandemic showed that N95 equivalent masks were extremely effective (I believe they were close to 100% protective). Anecdotal evidence from hospitals, ICUs etc over the past 3 years also shows how effective properly worn and fitted N95 masks are. The problem with most studies is controlling all of the variables.

It's not just a case of whether it filters viruses that are airborne that you might breathe... when you have a population of people who could be coughing and sneezing mucus around almost any mask can act to prevent a whole lot of spray that could be on things you touch.

Something that got lost in the discussion very early on is that nobody claimed masks would STOP transmission of the virus. The intent of masking was to SLOW transmission of the virus. Yet the anti-maskers were quick to use continued transmission of the virus, even with mask mandates, as "proof" that masks don't work.
Have you seen how people wear masks? Just over the mouth and nose exposed, Under chin and pull up when a person is coming into a 2 metre zone around the wearer. Over beards.
Look to the other of you on this limb-I am sitting there too with my mask --( a senior with asthma but did not get sick)
Haven't had the flu or Bronchitis or tonsilitis for 3 years.
Very good work, carry on Doctor. 🖖
I used to get a cold every month. During mandatory masking I wasn’t sick for over a year. But this requires relying on the consideration of others.

"We are uncertain whether wearing masks or N95/P2 respirators helps to slow the spread of respiratory viruses based on the studies we assessed."
Cochrane review.
The virus came from China.
If you think that a 1/16" of face mask is going to help. That is just silly
Fox News made being anti-mask their identity. Talking them out of it is like trying to talk a fundamentalist out of their religion.
You need an electron microscope to even view them
You could 100% remove your house and car filters if you were using them to filter viruses because they cannot filter viruses.
But she NEVER had a problem wearing a mask. this almost sounded like " we havent gathered very good data on mask mandates and also people arent taking it seriously, also nobody wants to wear them anymore so lets just not do it." I'll admit that there is probably more data on seatbelt mandates, but couldnt you just make the same argument for a seatbelt mandate was not being enforced on a large scale? @@ricardocabeza6006True. Her agenda is clearly science.
The number one best option is and always has been, social distancing. Especially if you don't like people to begin with.
Yep. And what's the point of being out with people, since I see tables of people at restaurants, and they're all in their phones anyway!

Most people that wear a mask are not wearing an N95 or high quality mask.
Mask don't stop COVID
Thank you David, great questions and honest answers!
So, what I got from this is that she has no idea how big a part masks play in preventing illness
Thanks for addressing this, David. Very helpful!
@@thevoiceofreason4104 thanks, I agree difficult, but the foundation of wearing masks at all, or any strategies built upon its recognized efficiency. Thank you for the input.
