In the past I've been using the study "Professional and Home-Made Face Masks Reduce Exposure to Respiratory Infections Among the General Population" by Marianne van der Sande et al. PLoS One. 2008" (also available at the NIH National Library of Medicine website) which was published prior to the H1N1 outbreak, and it's good to see how it compares to an article published after that outbreak. It seems that the figures are somewhat similar which is good!

It's like those ultrasonic pest repellers that claim to repel rodents but don't, sure they look like they are working but if you do any study on them you would find they are useless. Same with cloth masks, the ONLY masks proven to work are sealed n95 masks and hospital workers need those the most not Joe down the street who has a 0.05% dying from the virus...

JB Bgin well this is all we can wear at this time tho. The best and only affordable option out there right now which everyone is literally using and are even encouraged to use is non-surgical masks or cloth masks. It’s obviously not gonna do much but it is what everyone has on out in the public. It is what the authorities are telling people to wear. It literally says on the box “ This product does not protect you from any type of viruses or germs ”.

@@AdamSmith-gs2dv Yours doesn't protect you, it protects me. Mine protects you. This seems to be the fundamental thing people are missing. No mask will give you 100% protection short of wearing a spacesuit. But wearing a face covering does prevent some of the aerosol in your breathe reaching others. It's a reduction, not an elimination. Reduction might be all that's necessary to prevent another outbreak and consequential lockdown.

@JB Bgin @JB Bgin 1: No way in hell are we taking the word of reduced spread there when their government likely killed the person who leaked the virus. 2: We are "really behind" but their relaxed outdated food laws are what caused this. This exact reason is why most countries have food regulation laws. Inhuman caging and street butcher and sell (that's what its usually call, Im not just being harsh) is centuries behind. You cant, as a civilized forward thinking nation, think its okay to horde kill, bleed and store all your products in one open outdoor market thats the same exact place the food shits/pisses. Fruit and veggies, obviously. But their meats set in the hot sun for hours after butcher on top of other meats that are setting meters away from piss and shit. Nah, they are obviously advanced in many areas, and their citizens are blameless and innocent for just buying food for their families and the vendors are using whats available to them, but its not up for debate that their failure of leadership in food and drug safety caused a literal pandemic. Again, this isnt directed at you citizens of China if some happen to read this, you are blameless and you should be offered more guidance and assistance for your meat, food and drug storage as vendors. 3: Also, masks would never work in any western Country long term. You simply will never be able to make us wear masks because you legally cant tell us what we can and cant wear, if a State has no basic laws over nudity and the private business owner allows it, we could walk right in nude/topless (many states have no natural laws against it) and business owners would never mandate it and let it hurt their sells/revenue. If you want to wear one, wear it as is your right but you (in normal times) cant logically think telling people what they can and cant wear will fly in modern society... Thats a quick direct line to "no shorts on fat/chubby people" or "No take tops on people with tattoos" if the wrong person comes into power, which many believe already sets the perch. China has no mandate on masks (outside of the pandemic), they simply chose it due to severe overcrowding. The people of China dont wear masks outside packed dirty cities. \

Now we're all forced to do that with our lives, unfortunately. The good news: I feel like the recent videos have been the most helpful and essential that the channel has ever done. The current limitations have brought more focus to Sam's excellent explanations and expert interviews, and the visuals look nice and truly help illustrate things. Stay safe, stay looking out for one another, try to let your limitations spark your creativity. It can be tough, but let's use this time to think about what we are and rebuild into something even better.

What you do is a couple things. First, decide if taking the safe approach is worth the risk or hassle. In this case, wearing a mask is a tiny inconvenience. It's a little uncomfortable, yeah, but stop being a little bitch.
Second, listening to individual doctors argue will cloud your view. What is the general consensus view amongst all doctors? Well, the vast majority recommend wearing a mask. Consensus views by doctors, who follow evidence based recommendations, are based on the best available science. Is it always right? Of course not, but that's the point of science. We keep gathering data, and sometimes, we find out we were wrong.

Only 70% of the breathing goes through mask with the other 30% going around the sides of the mask per May Chu, a clinical professor in epidemiology at the Colorado School of Public Health.
Virus is 0.125 microns in size and the N95's can do 0.30 microns of filtration (fit about 3 virus cells through mask's filtering per sq um) with the other masks doing only about 3.0 microns or higher (e.g. even less filtering- fit about 24 virus cells through the mask's filtering per sq um)
Also masks deflect the droplets up over your head (from sneezes/coughs) so that they will take much longer to fall rather than without masks. Really not certain how good "robber's masks/bandannas " are at all as they have even less filtering and tight fitting qualities with more air going around them than through them worse than the N95's (70/30).
They never define droplets sizes but only as "bigger". -- As the droplets dry out, does the virus escape the mask or do the droplets help concentrate the virus in your mask for re-absorption by your own body (e.g. make you sicker/less tolerant to the disease)? -- Google this stuff.
-- Not really understanding the mask thing in the first place other than using it as "badge of caring/ better than nothing" display about the virus. Maybe use splash shields for everyone instead ? -- At least the droplets would dry out faster with less contamination to yourself. Maybe your own air tank (scuba gear?) would be even better!!
Also --Guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention making the rounds this week on the internet are clarifying what we know about the transmission of the corona virus.
    >>The virus does not spread easily via contaminated surfaces, according to the C.D.C.

I can't emphasize that a cloth mask doesn't mean you go into public to enjoy dinner dates and bar crawls or club raves. Stay home everyone and stay safe and kill the virus this way. Everyone going to Walmart and doing the usual only spreads the virus. If you have tested positive or show symptoms of being sick with a respiratory infection, and you haven't tested negative, stay home. Call out from work. Whatever you do, just isolate until 14 days after symptoms have gone away.
N95 masks filters 0.3 micron sized particulates. Another way of saying this is 300 nanometers.

I think this is a bit of reverse psychology. People feel safe because they are wearing masks, but in my (non-expert) opinion, the cloth masks stop the wearer from transmitting to others. The masks are excellent at stopping the wearer's possibly infected droplets out to others. So this is good to stop those that are non-symptomatic carriers from inadvertent transmission.

I absolutely new it was because of how people go out and grab a bit of it in a frenzy, so they down played it because there was already a shortage. It really was pretty obvious because I have masks for dust and people wear them for allergies so I know they protect the wearer from breathing it in too although they won't say that part. Fabric filters are not like pasta drainers. In fact, the smallest aerosols are as likely to be filtered out as the largest aerosols. Every filter material has an MPPS (most penetrating particle size). This is due to the different modes particles are captured on the fiber of the filter. The larger particles are mostly captured by impacting the fiber, intercepting with the fiber while being carried around the fiber by air. The smallest particles are more affected by the movement of air molecules so such particles usually go zig-zag in the filter airway thus more likely to be caught on the filter fiber.

I am surprised you found a study on common fabrics against viral particles. Some of the numbers seem inflated though. A surgical mask has rarely ever been rated N90 from what I found. I would have to read this study to fin out why the number was so high. N95 was shown to trap 8X more particles than 3 ply surgical masks in studies I found. The flow rate in this study seems low, however, and that might have contributed to the numbers being higher. The standard is based on what perentage of 0.3 microns particles are blocked at a flow of 85 L/min. Almost 3 times higher than this test.

We also showed that filtration was extremely poor (almost 0%) for the cloth masks. Observations during SARS suggested double-masking and other practices increased the risk of infection because of moisture, liquid diffusion and pathogen retention. These effects may be associated with cloth masks.

Isn't it disappointing that nobody is doing good research for finding out how to make the best mask for this virus ? This situation is to begin with different from that where you need protection at work from fine dust, because here quick saturation through clogging is unlikely. It might very well be that the virus is so small that it can pass through any fabric that also allows for easy breathing. But it's also possible that a combination of several thin nylon layers on top of the cotton captures already a lot of it electrostatically. Perhaps a wet mask offers (for short use then) also a almost perfect protection. Perhaps some foam material is an option (virus taking such a long road through it, it sticks) or some special glass wool (virus gets damaged by sharpness) or even very thin woven, low voltage charged copper wire (virus doesn't survive well on copper and a low charge could enhance this effect) could be an option.

The original statement was an acknowledgement that the mask is useless in protecting the wearer from infection (no mask can filter or catch such a tiny thing as a virus). Most people still think the mask has something to do with personal protection. The change of message demonstrates the realization that the mask reduces considerably aerosol transmissions which may contain SARS-Cov-2. Its utility is in community/environmental protection. The CDC is staffed by human beings who are not perfect. Human beings suddenly in charge of disseminating important messages take time to sharpen those messages. Sharpening may come with focus and attention, but it also comes as a result of experience as the context of the message evolves. I blame less the leaders for being caught off guard than I blame the sheeple for insisting on being stupid even AFTER the leaders finally get their ducks in a row.

Would you like to see 5 peer reviewed papers stating that "surgical masks" are at best 30-50% effective at retaining/resisting the micro-aerosols/ microdroplets? Wearing a surgical mask to protect is NO MORE effective than putting out a forest fire with a water pistol. NO," its better than nothing" doesn't cut it!

That is the premium mask to have, it is rated against viruses. Of course their harder to breath through even with the little respirator on it well for someone with breathing issues anyway. You can reuse it to by hanging it on a hanger in garage and don't touch it or try to re use it for at least 3 days (72 hrs) for the virus to die on it's own on that surface type because you can't wash them. Unless you have an endless supply.

I have also seen many people pulling their masks down below their nose. Anything that MIGHT help, but pointedly causes difficulty breathing is a jet negative to me. The Mary Sue's and Karens glare at me over their cloth mask they have used without washing for the last week, while I am conscientious about everything I touch, and if I must cough or sneeze, I'm careful about its vectors. We are cutting off important means of communication, to appease the "may helps". I hope this blows over soon, and we can be able to see each other smile again.

The virus is very small but it has to have a vehicle to get around and that's the stuff that comes out of our mouths into the air and can be projected long distances depending on how it's projected talking vs sneezing which some people really sneeze big. So it's much bigger than just the virus but it can vary in size depending on what mode of transportation it uses. If that analogy helps.

Many of us wear glasses and cannot see through fogged up lenses when we cover our noses too. Ergo we are constantly fiddling with our masks ESPECIALLY if we are expected to cover our noses too. Supposedly there's ways to adjust your mask over your nose so it doesn't fog up your glasses but I've found those methods to be a crapshoot at best. I'll stick to covering my mouth with my cloth mask and sneezing into my elbow when my allergies act up so I can actually function with vision and not walk into walls due to fogged glasses!

A very good question. It seems to me that the answer is almost certainly "yes." Furthermore, if social distancing actually works, then slowing down the airflow from an infected person would be highly desirable. The air carrying the virus particles will not go as far, making social distancing more effective. This matter is seldom addressed in these forums. As far as I can see, it is rarely addressed in research.

Yes it can. Wearing a mask means that the air you are breathing has an increased CO2 level. The standard for masks is that the CO2 levels in the mask can be up to 1%. In the UK (and Europe) the maximum level for the workplace is 0.5% averaged over the working day. If you are wearing a mask for 8 hours in the UK, that would be in breach of health and safety laws

Used to be 200 count was triple thread 200 count one way. Now 200 count can be one thread both ways - or single thread 100 count one way. Gone are the days that 200 count Sears sheets meant you were actually getting the quality equivalent of1200 count single thread both ways.

Here's the link you can check it out yourself. www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0048969720330278 Also I learned you want 3 layers of 100% cotton and the higher the thread count naturally the tighter the threads are woven like 180 thread count. Not sure what a T-shirt would be but a cotton sheet comes in counts like that. Preferably with a metal nose piece so you can eliminate gaps around the nose and it helps you if you wear glasses too. I still think if it can stop droplets from leaving the mask it should do the same for penetrating another persons masks, just like N95 masks are rated to keep stuff out not in. Wash with hot water and dry by machine. If someone is going to wear it for many hours, might want to change to a fresh mask during the day too.

According to OSHA, employers are supposed to provide a working environment that has a minimum of 19.5% oxygen, which is critical when you work on submarines, for instance. I saw a video recently that showed a submarine worker who had a meter that measured the oxygen level, and he put the meter inside of his face mask. Within 2 seconds, the alarm on the meter went off letting him know the level had dropped below 19.5%, so he checked the meter and it read 18.6%. When your brain doesn't get the amount of oxygen it needs, it does irreparable brain damage and it quickly leads to death. If you are required to wear a mask, I would suggest you take frequent breaks so you can get some much needed oxygen, despite what so-called health 'experts' may say.

It doesn't hurt you to properly wear a mask. There are then 2 possibilities. It either helps slow the spread or it doesn't hurt. Therefore is simply selfish and arrogant not to wear one. Period. It doesn't matter which side of the argument is correct.

    • @VicvicW
      @VicvicW 4 роки тому

There is a third possibility: they cause harm. If masks cause people to engage in more risky behavior (such as getting closer to people, reduing their handwashing etc) then they are causing harm. If a wet cloth mask significantly increases the likelihood of transmission from the mask into the air, or from the air through the mask, then they cause harm. If a mask causes droplets to be propelled up and out the top, higher into the air, keeping them suspended longer, they cause harm.
The CDC changed their advice not because they thought something was now safe, but because it would force more people back out into the world.
Disjunctive reasoning doesn’t work if you exclude a whole possibility.
