A few fun facts about Queen:
* Guitarist Sir Brian May has a Ph.D. in Astrophysics and built his electric guitar (Red Special) when he was 17 (with his dad).
* Bassist John Deacon has a degree in electronics. He designed and built the amp that Brian sometimes uses to create unique sounds on Red Special. John was also involved in the band’s financial management.
* Drummer Roger Taylor has a degree in biology (pre-med). His vocal range is better than most lead singers of other groups.
* Lead singer Freddie Mercury has a degree in graphic design. It goes without saying that his vocal range was amazing and he was the best front man of any band.
* All four have written #1 hits, and all are members of the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Queen is a British rock band that was formed in 1970 and was comprised of:
Freddie Mercury - Lead vocals and piano
Roger Taylor - Drummer and vocals
Brian May - Lead guitar and vocals
John Deacon - Bass guitar
Queen has released 15 studio albums, 10 live albums, 16 compilation albums, two soundtrack albums, 2 extended plays, 73 singles, and seven promotional singles.
Live Aid was a duel-venue concert held simultaneously at Wembley Stadium in London (audience of 72,000) and JFK Stadium in Philadelphia (audience of 90,000) that was connected and broadcast over 13 satellites worldwide to an audience of over 1.9 Billion. The purpose of the concert was to raise money to aid Ethiopia which was suffering from 2-year drought.
There were 75+ acts, each allotted a 20-minute slot to perform. The UK line-up included Status Quo,, David Bowie, Elton John, Wham!, Sting, U2, The Who, Paul McCartney, and Bob Geldof with his band The Boomtown Rats. The US bill included Madonna, Eric Clapton, Duran Duran, Mick Jagger, Paul Simon, Led Zeppelin, and Tom Petty. Phil Collins played in both London and then caught the Concord Supersonic Jet and flew to perform again in Philly.
Live Aid did not have a Queen audience. All of the tickets to Wembley were sold before Queen was announced to be part of the venue. At this time, Queen was considered to be an old band (they had been performing since 1970.) Those in the audience came to see groups like U2 and Wham!
Also, remember the Live Aid at Wembley concert began at 12:00 London time (the Philly concert began 5 hours later), so the audience had been there in the sun and heat for nearly 7 hours by the time Queen performed.
Unlike most of the other acts performing, Queen took this performance very seriously. They rented a hall and rehearsed their performance for a week before the concert. They had clocks placed all over the rehearsal area to keep track of the time (remember they were limited to 20 minutes). Paul Gambaccini, who was part of the BBC broadcasting team at Live Aid, recalled the awe among other superstar musicians watching backstage. “Everybody realized that Queen was stealing the show,” said Gambaccini. These were the very words Elton John uttered when he rushed into Freddie’s trailer after the set. “You bastards, you stole the show,” joked the charismatic star.
“Queen smoked ’em. They just took everybody. They walked away being the greatest band you’d ever seen in your life, and it was unbelievable,” said Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters. “And that’s what made the band so great; that’s why they should be recognized as one of the greatest rock bands of all time because they could connect with an audience.”

Carrying the mic stand was a trademark of Freddie. The story goes the stand broke during a very early concert and Freddie just went with it.

I was 18 years old the first time I saw Queen in 1975 and fell in love. Saw them several more times and still in love 50 years later. That's staying power 😁 Freddie, tu est mon ange 😘😇 je t'adore.

All four members were inducted into the songwriter’s hall of fame. They are the only band where all members were inducted. They are also in the rock and roll hall of fame. Both Freddie and Roger have a 4 octave vocal range. Freddie had a throat infection during this concert and was told by his doctor to not perform.

To give people some idea just how good Queen was that day, the legendary David Bowie who was on after queen was heard by a reporter to exclaim "how the fuck am i supposed to follow that?' also Freddie was asked"which instrument do you play Freddie?" "Radio was the first place I heard rock 'n' roll. Today it seems that video has become more important than the music itself - too much so, really. Music is supposed to be an experience for the ears more than the eyes."

I love this set and this performance. There is so much electricity between the band and the audience. Freddie just had a way about him, he captured every person in the audience right away and had them eating out of the palm of his hand. The best part was that it was fun for Freddie that way too. I absolutely love Brian May, he is my favorite rock guitar player which is saying a lot because I have a lot of favorites. There is just something about the tone he creates whether he is playing his Red Special, or the Fender or the acoustic as seen in Crazy Little Thing Called Love where he plays all three (Freddie wrote this song as a tribue to Elvis. He wrote it in about 10 minutes while taking a bath). He is just so good and the perfect compliment for Freddie as are Roger and John. Thank you for your reaction to this incredible performance. The stadium was sold out at 72,000 people. Radio Ga-Ga was written by the drummer, Roger Taylor. It is about how important a role radio had played in our lives for generations as well as in music and how the new idea of video music was becoming popular and the hope that it would not crush radio and remove it from our lives which in fact, it now sort of has. Freddie likes to work the whole stage, unlike most other acts. The camera crew wasn't really ready of that so they were crowding Freddie so he was having fun establishing his territory by moving in on the camera guys even sticking his tongue out at the one in his face. Freddie used the microphone as a phalis a lot of the time, always pressing the edges of the envelope. According to Roger, their shows in Rio (Rock In Rio) each had about 300,000 in the audience and their live in Hyde Park show had at least 150,000 so this was just another stadium show for Queen as far as the audience size is concerned. You know it is a killer set when the security team in front of the stage is facing the stage instead of watching the audience to make sure nobody is going to rush the stage. "How does he still have so much energy?" This is nothing, this is a 20 minute set, a Queen Concert was/is generally over 2 hours and Freddie was running and racing up the stairs for the whole thing. Accordign to Brian the adrenalin is flowing hard during a show so any aches or pains are taken away by "Dr Rock" as they referred to it. I have seen footage of Roger being so exhausted once he left the stage that he was being assisted as he was walking back to the dressing room where he was often given oxygen to help him recover. Roger sings the whole time while drumming and I have wondered where in the world he gets the breath to do both. Unlike most singing drummers, who tend to be more mellow with their drumming, Roger hits the skins hard and with a lot of flare. Someone is confusing this concert with Queen's concerts in South Africa. This show was at Wembley Stadium in London, was part of a charity show for famine relief for Ethiopia and there was no controversy around it. The controversy comes when Queen decided to to concerts in Africa while the country was going through political struggles over apartheid. Many in the music communtiy were very uspset with Queen's decision to do those shows, but the band felt that music had nothing to do with politics and they were not going to stop people from having a good time just because governments couldn't come to terms with issues withing their countries. Those shows were very successful and fans were so grateful for Queen doing them. This was very much a home town crowd for Queen but Queen was not scheduled or confirmed when the tickets were sold, so none of the people at this show had purchased tickets expecting to see Queen perform. The band said that they were nervous leading up to this show but they were fine once they got on stage, that adrenalin thing again. Freddie was sick, though. He had a throat infection and was advised by his doctor not to perform...but this was the perfect Mercury crowd...the entire world.
Appreciate this, answered a lot of questions I had and gave me more insight on Queen. They truly are a special band!

Freddie was nervous because his doctor said him NOT to perform because he was sick. I saw Queen a couple of times late 70's and early 80's in Belgium, and I still love them today. Unreplacable band! Thanks for sharing.

They topped this with their performances in Rio Each show was watched by nearly 200 million people in over 60 countries and in front of 250,000-500,000 people for each night setting a world record for the biggest paying audience ever at the time. It was later broadcast in the United States on MTV as " Queen: Live in Rio ".

have been told that if you download from the Official Queen youtube channel you do not have to worry about strikes or blocking, you don't have to alter the video. Queen is in the process of selling their catalog so not sure how long that will last.
Queen did finish the sale of their catalog for 1.27 _BILLION_ to Sony. I didn't even consider they might start blocking. We should have been consulted about sharing rights!!!

@@DanCanReact So far, you are fine if you download videos from Queen Official. They do not do strikes ore remove videos. You don't need anti-blocking techniques. Freddie sounded this amazing after having laryngitis the week before. He did a spectacular performance, but said afterwards that it felt like he was singing with a throat full of glass shards.
Ow. Sucks that he had to go through this WHILE performing the show of his life, but I'm grateful for it.
The Who were scheduled later in the evening, Queen was a last minute schedule, when Freddie , teased the guitar smash, that's exactly what it was a tease, and also pure class.!

The broken mike stand happened at one of the very early performances by accident but he kept it as it gave him freedom to work the stage. It could become anything, a golf club, an air guitar, a gun, ive even seen him smash it on to stage floor and sparks literally flew, and of course he was naughty with it sometimes. Yes he could be wild sometimes but that was part of his charm, you never knew what he would do next. Kept people on the back foot including the rest of the band.
That's what makes him such a good entertainer, I was genuinely on the edge of my seat watching him.
I saw this live. Never seen anything like it in my life and I've been to a few live gigs in my time. Outstanding.

The mike stand was a thing of Freddie's which came about by accident and he liked it.. He used it to great effect, sometimes as an air guitar, sometimes being incredibly rude with it! 😂😂

I posted a video summarizing the Live Aid concert. Hard to do for a show of 16 hours, but I still remember that day. Amazing concert full of stars.
The guitarist is Brian May, and along with drummer Roger Taylor, still tour till this day as Queen. The bassist, John Deacon, said there could be no Queen without Freddie, and retired.
I saw that they did a performance with Adam Lambert not too long ago. That was cool!
72,000 people, but Queen played a lot of concerts bigger than that. Slane Castle, 95,000, Knebworth, over 100,000. They were amazing!
Apparently Rio was the largest from what the commenters have been saying. It was 200k+ which is insane!!

I posted a video trying to summarize Live Aid as I still remember when I was a boy watching TV. But it's just some minutes of a show of many hours. Amazing concert, so many stars.
It's even more amazing how it generated over 100 million dollars for the cause. So cool!

Crazy Little Thing Called Love was written by Freddie as a tribute to Elvis! The video is really cool! By the type of music you love at your age I bet you were raised in a rural area. I live in the very very rural Midwest!! This was my music back in the day! My kids and now grandkids all love this kind of music as well as classic rock and country! Rock on man, I subscribed!
I actually don't! My father was just really into this type of music so I was around it a lot as a kid. Haven't listened to classic rock in ages, so I decided to return to this type of music now!
@@DanCanReact Whenever my kids play the jukebox people say "You raised him/her right"! I'm happy you got exposed to great music growing up and you're coming back to enjoy some of it again! Back in the day you actually had to have real talent, no auto-tune or pitch-correction (that started in the late '90's), no paying thousands of dollars to see a band lip-sync. I saw Bob Seger in 1983, 9th row floor tickets. The price of a ticket was $21.00 and when you got to the stage you could practically reach out and touch him, his sweat hit your face, it was great! I remember watching the Live Aid concert at home and wishing I was there! The set by Queen is considered "20 minutes that changed music forever". And this was Freddie on a day his vocal cord doctor ordered him not to perform! Well, no way would Freddie let his fans down!

Tickets for the whole day cost £25!!! Press had to pay £100, and Queen weren't on the play list until after tickets sold out, so this wasn't precisely a Queen audience. But listen to how the crowd all know the words to all the songs

Queen is made up of 4 individuals with their own talents. They cannot be ignored when it comes to music because of their nature in creating music. Not everyone who went to this event was a Queen fan. It was only too late that they found out that the Queen was one of the performers. Freddie at this time had a throat infection but still mange to have a great performance. Very professional band. IMO, they deserve to be recognized as the best band in the world. I hope you can react to "LOVE OF MY LIFE" at Wembley or Rock in Rio. You will be more amazed on crowd interaction and will never be disappointed. Thank you for your great reaction! ❤👑

I've watched this hundreds of times so find your amazed/pleased commentary entertaining. I love the dreamy bubble encasing Queens performance...new to me. So, fabulous Freddie apologised to the camera guy for interfering with them. Seems they loved it! Edit, again. A fav moment for me was the very end where Freddie and Deaky (John Deacon, bass) perfectly in sync throw their right fists into the air bringing a resounding end to their concert. Your cloud frame cut Deaky from that scene. .Oh well. lol

So, so, so much to say about Queen. Probably the only person who knows more than the majority of us Queenies is Taylor Hawkins. Put us all together, we might equal the knowledge he had. Queen, like Rush, changed through the decades. To "get" Queen, it's good to start at the beginning. Or the end. Or the middle. And keep moving from there. Know that there are no two songs alike. Even their hit songs were wildly disparate. Go into each song with open curiosity and you will leave with neverending awe at their incredible abilities and creativity. One thing to remember. There was no autotune, no Melodyne, no clicks, they didn't even wear headsets or earbuds and used corded mics and instruments. This is what REAL music is. Done with love and talent and not technology. (Well, except for massive overdubbing. _wink to Queenies_ )
Re: Apartheid and Queen, they had a series of concerts in S. Africa in 1984. It remains controversial all these decades later because it was a United Nations cultural boycott where people/actors/musicians/etc. did not go S. Africa because it gave $$ to the white oppressionist government. Queen defended going, saying it was with "racially integrated audiences." They did lose sponsors and people were pissed. Queen did not join Live Aid until all the tickets had been sold and all the acts solidified. They were brought in as a last minute "please!" from Bob Geldof. I do not think, from anything I have read, that the anti-Queen sentiment was anywhere around Live Aid, by performers and obviously not the audience. Some thought attending Live Aid was their "I'm sorry we went," but that didn't come until 2021 when the amazing drmmer and vocalist Roger Taylor, finally, publically said they had made the wrong choice to go.
Their place at Live Aid was great before, but is historical now. The other artists stopped what they were doing to listen and watch the set. Elton John told Freddie, "You bastards. You stole the show!" and David Bowie who went on after Queen, said, "How am I supposed to follow that?"

Really interesting read! I love how raw and real the music was from back then. It's truly rare to find music of this level nowadays. I'm surprised they were more of a last minute addition to this concert, I would have thought they were the headliner of the show! That's actually really surprising.
The part about the other artists stopping to listen to the show is so cool to hear. You'd assume they'd just be minding their business and concentrating on their set, but they couldn't miss this electric performance.

Radio Gaga is about the demise of the importance of the Radio in our lives. You have to know the history of the radio he references. Look up the War of the Worlds impact on the audience. In the 1930's there was no video. Video didn't come in the everyone's living room until 1950's and 1960's. Freddie when asked what instruments he plays responded with "the audience darling". Another great front man and talented band is Journey with Steve Perry. Check out their Houston concert. Also, Queen rehearsed for this performance. Every artist/band got 20 minutes to perform for this concert. Queen didn't even have a light show set but stole the show. U2 and Madonna had already performed by this time. They were just starting out and had only a couple of hits out at the time. This concert started at Wembley in London and ended at JFK stadium in Philadelphia. Elton John opened Wembley, took the Concord over to Philadelphia and closed the show there. That was a huge.

there was no controversy around this performance. the concert you're referring to took place the year prior in South Africa - not to raise funds for the famine in Africa like LiveAid. The gig at Sun City was controversial cause South Africa was an apartheid state and many artists had boycott playing there, while Queen decided to play stating that they play for fans not for politicians.

MATTER OF FACTS: They had just completed a Tour a month b4. So, they went & rented a Stadium to practice the performance. He ended up with a Throat Infection & the Doctor highly recommended he not do it bc he might lose his musical ability. He said no! Can you tell he had a severe throat infection? Most people think he was drinking booze from the cups bc on the piano. He’s drinking Honey & Tea. His command of the Audience was more than coincidence it was miraculous. Considering there were so many people there the sound was getting absorbed through them. So the people @ the back we’re following his hand gestures bc the actual sound hadn’t even reached them b4 the next sound was coming @ them. Go back & watch what his hands are doing & what the Audience is doing. NEXT: Radio Gaga is celebrating Radio bc M-TV is just getting started. LADY GAGA was a huge Freddie Fam growing up, so That was where she came up with HER STAGE NAME! You have to listen to the words to really understand the meaning. Most of us didn’t have a clue what a Band looked like unless we saw them in Person!
NEXT-MICROPHONE. At sometime along the way a Microphone Stand broke, so that was the only spilt second solution they could come up with. He realized the freedom he had to move, dance, & engage the Audience.

But, he just wasn’t sure about the song bc he didn’t want to taint Elvis. SO, he played it for Michael J. (Yes, they were friends!). And Michael told him he HAD TO, he said “Freddie, you have to”! (Can’t you just see that!?).
NEXT FREDDIE’s VOICE. HE HAD 4 extra teeth so that’s the reason he had such an overbite. He had the ability to naturally flow from Octave to Octave. It was a natural progression, for him.
SCIENTIFICALLY: Test were done on his Voice. He was able to use his Throat muscles on either side of his vocal cords. Which is normally seen in some Opera Singers. His Vocal Range was from Low Bass F, to High Soprano F! They were extremely surprised to find out that he could go from about 92Hz to 784Hz, effortlessly! See ACTUAL REPORT BELOW:

Although he naturally held a baritone voice, he primarily sang as a tenor and of course had no problem then shifting into soprano parts. One study on Freddie’s vocal range even confirmed that he was able to vary from about 92.2 Hz to 784 Hz, meaning he was reliably able to hit notes from the booming low of F#2 to the high pitch G5 - that covers a full three octaves!
LEAD GUITARIST: Brian May, is playing on a Guitar he & his Father made. When he first starting to learn they were too poor to afford a high end guitar. So, they just made one! They made out of an old cabinet his mother was going to throw awayThe included some “extras” that would normally have to be separate instruments to get all those features (think Concerts when you see guitarist changing Guitars depending on the Song….that’s why he didn’t)!

Maybe I don't know him well enough, but I remember him being an eccentric man in the interviews I've seen (not in a bad way he was really funny), so it wouldn't have surprised me.

I saw him kick over a large box (speaker?) on stage jump on top of it on stage once very early in their career. I don't think he liked it and never did it again.

My own feeling is that it creates a barrier and that didn't seem at all what Freddie was about. I am sure that what he wanted from audience interaction was more comradery than anything else.

This concert was nothing to do with South africa or Apartheid. It was to provide funds for other african countries which were having Famines. You are muddling it up with another concert performed by queen in South Africa. The Live aid concert was at Wembley Stadium in London
