    Karen was and still is the best female voice, in my opinion. I recall renting a video documentary on the Carpenters in the Army in the 1980s and got tested, but I didn't care. She left this earth way too early.

    Sometimes it can be difficult to listen to their songs, especially for those of us who grew up listening to them and know their story, especially Karen's. This song and video and always makes me choked up, seeing her and how beautiful she was. When she passed away, it wasn't just a loss to music, but it was a personal loss. Her nickname in the studio was "One Take Karen" as she would need only one take to record. Her last song, "Now", was done in one take. It was supposed to be a scratch recording for the rest of the band, it was only her and Richard (piano) in the studio. She wanted to redo it, but Richard saw that she didn't look well and said "it's fine, this is just a scratch." A little while later she passed.

    The musical catalog of the Carpenters is vast and varied. Karen started as the drummer for one of their earlier groups, but as a vocalist, she was superb and they wanted her to come out from behind the drums to sing. She was not comfortable and always considered herself "a drummer who sang." With Karen's vocals and her brother Richard's musical genius as pianist/songwriter/producer and arranger, they were one of the most popular duo's of the 70's.Karen's discomfort with her physical image led to anorexia, which she battled for many years until her heart gave out in 1983 at age 32. I was a HUGE fan and saw them live many times in the 70's. Any song you choose to react to of theirs is going to blow you away. I look forward to more Carpenters from you. Many come close to Karen's voice, but never duplicated. She was just a unique, one-of-a-kind voice.

    "Rainy Days and Mondays" is a good song written by Paul Williams and Roger Nichols (who were also under contract with A&M). I believe "Superstar" written by Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell is better and "Goodbye to Love" composed by Richard Carpenter and John Bettis, (Thought to be among the first power ballads) better yet. It does not matter what Carpenter song you decide to listen to you will enjoy it. Even the sad ones leave you feeling better when you listen to them. Try "I need to Be In Love" or "Solitaire" or "Masquerade" or "Reason To Believe" You cannot go wrong.

    • @DanCanReact

    Just to add - the duo did all their background vocals themselves (even though many videos show members of their backing band singing backups). There are only a handful of songs that featured others singing backup vocals on their recordings, and of course, choirs in some of their later albums especially their Christmas albums. That said, all the voices in this particular song are sung by Karen & Richard, using a technique called overdubbing.

    • @DanCanReact

      THEY HAVE CHRISTMAS ALBUMS?? Oh I need to check that out around Christmas time! And that's so interesting, I thought it was the people in the video who were singing the backing vocals. Karen and Richard have some powerful voices!

    Great reaction to a legendary duo Carpenters and the best voice (Karen Carpenter) I have ever experienced. Plus she is recognized as the top female drummer in the music circles. Karen Carpenter became established as one of the rare classic voices that will extend to all times. They as a duo tore up the Billboard charts in the 70's. Karen was also a kind, caring, down to earth person. The journey is a great one to go on. Every song IMHO is fantastic. Next song to listen to would be there first of many hits "Close To You".

    Hi Dan, Welcome to the Carpenters rabbit hole. It’s a mix of sadness and joy. Karen was the voice of a generation/lifetime/ever. All may apply. She didn’t belt or scream, no histrionics. Some of the songs were happy, Please Mr. Postman, Top Of The World. Some were sad, Rainy Days, Superstar, Goodbye To Love. I don’t think you were fully paying attention to the video. You would have noticed Karen was playing the drums while singing. Technically she was miming in this video, as Hal Blaine played the studio recording drums. But she could and did in the live videos you can see her in action. I’ll link a lesser known song below that is from a live appearance on The Tonight Show in 1973. Peak Karen and awesome drumming. The song is Mr. Guder. It’s from their Close To You album. I’m linking a restored and remastered video that will take you to a channel of my friend Harvey who has been restoring and rescuing Carpenters videos. I know you’ll enjoy this. Hopefully the Carpenters Army will find you and help build your channel. Joe ua-cam.com/video/WN6y7RJoYv4/v-deo.htmlsi=Nhf6X513_CV6dXBW .

      I used to catch them in various jazz clubs around Los Angeles. That started in 1965 and went until 1968 (Karen was from 15 in 65 to 18 in 68. They started as the Dick Carpenter Jazz Trio with Richard on an electric piano Karen on the drums and Wesley Jacobs bass and tuba. They won the Hollywood Bowl Battle of the Bands in 1966. Then they formed a collage group called Spectrum a sextet with Richard Karen and guitarist John Bettis who wrote music with Richard, guitarist Gary Sims, bassist Dan Woodhams, and vocalist Leslie "Toots" Johnston. They played the Whisky-A-GO-GO a number of times. then they were back to Dick Carpenters Jazz Trio only with Bill Sissoyev providing the bass. They won the 'Your All American Show" (their first time on TV) in 1968. Karen was a killer drummer who could handle unusual times (common in jazz by 1970) that most drummers could not and by 68 she was singing too. In the 60 and 70s Playboy sponsored a jazz festival every year. In 1975 Karen was named Playboy's Best Rock Drummer of the Year.

      @@A-whiter-shade-of-pale mostly correct and you were one of the lucky ones to see them as locals in LA back then. Very jealous. I never got to see them live. In 1975 in the Playboy Readers Music Poll, in the Drumming section. Karen came in 10th, John Bonham 11th (he famously didn’t like that) and Buddy Rich was #1. Thanks to a certain young blonde female Carpenters collector. I have a screen shot of that page from the magazine. It’s very difficult to find correct data from that issue. It’s behind a paywall. I posted that image on my “I” account, as she took down the videos of her collection. Oh yeah, she sings, too.

    Thanks for the honest and heartfelt reaction! Not sure how much you learned about this group in your research, but Karen and Richard Carpenter were a brother/sister duo who were active as the "Carpenters" from 1969 - 1983. In addition to their 12 top 10 singles, they were the number one selling group of the 1970s. Karen arguably had the most beautiful voice in pop music history. She was a contralto with a 3 octave range, and her tone and timbre, particularly in her lower register was simply gorgeous. She was also a terrific drummer, who had no problem singing and drumming at the same time. Richard was a musical genius in his own right, a piano/keyboard prodigy who arranged all of their music and also wrote and produced many of their songs (Karen did not write any of their songs, in spite of how well they mirrored much of her own melancholy). Sadly, Karen passed away in 1983 at the very young age of 32 due to complications from Anorexia Nervosa, a little known condition at the time. In addition to all of the hit singles, their entire catalog is deep with incredible songs to react to for years to come.

    • @DanCanReact
      @DanCanReact 21 годину тому

    His being grew in his later concerts..in my opinion, he didn't need it, but it worked for him! Elvis is definitely a rabbit hole you want to dive into!❤

    What's wrong with the sound - it's off mate, Elvis is too deep. The actual sound you can hear his baratone and vibrato working in tandem. ua-cam.com/video/ixbcvKCl4Jc/v-deo.html

      I addressed this issue to someone else who commented, but it was for copyright reasons. This video was blocked worldwide and I had to take several measures just to get it up on the channel (I had to reupload 4 times)... Including flipping the video, using color correction and fading it the video. If you want to experience the actual song, I already linked it in the description upon posting! The point of this video is to get my reaction, but that can't happen if the video is blocked 😅

    Young man, we had colour TV in the 80s 😂 This song is about heroine addiction and the downward spiral of that addiction. Repeated references to 'let it go' and 'I'm wide awake, I'm not sleeping' and a U2 favourite, 'bloodshot eyes', all describing the despair of their friend trapped in a habit they couldn't escape from. There was a sequel of sorts on Zooropa called Daddy's Gonna Pay for your Crashed Car, where 'Daddy' was the dealer and the crashed car was the addiction. Nice reaction. Maybe turn the music audio up a bit 😊

      Yeah, it's just that the colors looked extremely unnatural so I thought it was filmed with an older camera then colorized with AI. Appreciate the feedback and suggestions, thanks!
