I’ve got a Bosch cable detector. I find I get the best results from it by leaving it in the box it came in and asking my dog what she thinks instead. That gives me a similar level of accuracy as holding the detector against the wall and it’s a lot less frustrating. Then just drill the hole, keeping your fingers firmly crossed and not forgetting to do the “safety squint”

Heaviest mirror I hung was a Patricia over-mantle mirror from Laura Ashley weighing about 24Kg - onto a plasterboard stud wall. I cut out a 1m x 20cm section of the plasterboard and replaced it with a strip of 12mm white pine. I bolted some small coat-hooks to the pine before screwing it to the joists. Filled in around the pine and painted and it works a treat.

Looks like an IKEA mirror. I cut the cardboard packaging it came in to the same size of the mirror, measured for the hangers and put a hole through the cardboard where the screws would go. Offer the cardboard to the wall making it level, tape it into position then mark the screw holes. Remove cardboard, drill holes, hang mirror, have a cup of tea.
