    The game we see in S2 was designed for VR, and the AI was designed to better suit an audience new to VR. The designers likely WANTED AI to not run away from grenades, react slowly, etc. This video was a fun little comparison of features within the hl games (NOT the engine) but does not really encapsulate the motivations behind stylistic choices

      If I recall correctly.
      The devs deliberately dumbed down the AI to prevent the game from being too unfair.

      @@SirCheeseEater Yeah, essentially it was because in a normal kb+m game, you can react so much faster because it's easy to move your mouse to aim or maneuver with your keys. Since in VR you have to deal with the inertia of your own body for looking around/aiming with your arms, they made the AI a lot slower so they are actually reasonable to deal with. HL2 or HL1 AI would be really hard to fight in VR because of how much they maneuver and zip around.

      afaik, the combine ai is the same that the HL1 grunts use, but they were in a confined space with no room to move for the grenade test either

      @@SirCheeseEater Try to hit a fast enemy with a grenade when they shoot at you, you have an empty clip, at the same moment your legs, eyes and head from VR hurt, and your vision is also about zero . By the way, I almost forgot, you control your body like a person who had legs sewn on instead of arms, and your strength is like in a dream when you were attacked, good luck in your endeavor!

      Well they have no nodes in that section of the map, infact the whole NPC reaction thing in this video is useless. NPCs are meant to have specific nodes to react.

    Aw, you missed one of the neatest parts about S2's glass: you can interact with it in ways other than just smashing! You can also grab shards and pull them out of the window frame!

      "No computer being able to run it" is false. Half-Life 1 gore is very simple. It's just gibs, it doesnt even have dismemberment, or more performance-heavy gore.

      @@verzionhorizon gibs are model based not engine based. Bassically when something gets blown up, the original model will be removed or changed to a different model (gibs) which replaces it. For the decapitation in tf2 like when u kill with the clademore it just shrinks the models head and spawns a head gib

      I think they removed gibbing because it was unrealistic. As well as GoldSrc limitations, stuff like that. Specifically physics.

    Hl2 beta HAD glass physics implemented. the glass you were shooting at just wasn't breakable.. there's tons of those in retail and hl1 too. the breakable glass in the beta was really similar to gldsrc breaking glass.

      theres two different types of source glass, breakable blocks, and the big flat pane, when you shoot around the center of the pane the center crumples when its disconnected

    the problem with this comparassion, is trhat its not exactly comparing the engine its more or less comparing the game and how the devs implemented the features, cause they could have make the npc different in all the engines its not really showing the limitations and limits of each engine.

    The difference between Gold Source and Source is incredible considering it’s only a few years apart. Source to Source 2 with almost 20 years in between, not so much.
    Innovation in gaming slowed down so much since the late 2000s.

      Well it depends on how you look at it. The computing power required is a much bigger jump from Source to Source 2, than Gold Source to Source.

      Just wait until bci becomes more fleshed out. Gabe Newell himself believes it'll be an industry game changer, although I'm not so sure about a "matrix level of vr simulation" being possible in general.

    The beta glass triggered me. That texture doesnt break in retail too. And on the technical part, hl2 retail glass is in the beta, but is not used cause its just unnecessary details.
    Both hl2 beta and hl2 have the same glass. And both of them use hl1 type of glass, to save on resources.

    S2 glasses has many other abilities than just being destroyed, comparison was. incompleted
    NPCS reacting to grenade has nodes issues, test was incorrect
    Friendlies taking damage - NPCs in HL1 had no target, NPCs in HL2 were missing weapons and target to fight. Test was incorrect
    Annoying NPCs are scenic scripts and never were actual part of the engine. Except Source Beta

    Interestingly the Source huge (barrel explosion) looks better, by the way they explode a bit delayed and spred than the Source 2.

    You just lied! There is Beta Source glass breaking. It was implemented on map d2_prison_06 from HL2BETA 2003. Maybe there is another encouters of breaking glass, but this one is the only I do remember.

      @@Namerco I don't think it would take that long for a trained millitary soldier to react to a grenade. In fact, if I were to see/hear a grenade fall down right next to me I would probably run instead of stalling for 5 seconds and running *in the direction of the grenade to "get away"*
      Also HL1 is a little realistic... apart from the fact that there is teleportation technology that accidentally teleports a bunch of aliens from another dimension to a research facility in New Mexico and the fact that the most realistic its physics gets are small things bouncing off the ground upon impact but nothing rotates.
      HL2 on the other hand is literally a dystopian sci fi world where there are not only aliens and teleportation but the enemies are technically cyborgs

      Well yeah, you have to factor in the AI they made was handicapped specifically for VR so it wouldn’t get extremely hard in the later stages

      idk, the combine are incredibly smart, its just hard to notice. they had to dumb them down in a lot of places to make sure the game was still playable, but if you look into their interactions with you in the actual game they put a lot of thought into what they do

    3:48 This is not a fair representation of what goldsrc is capable of with this. Opposing Force introduced friendly NPCs reacting by helping in the firefight or at least trying to find out what was attacking them. And that goes for both HECU and Black Ops units.
