I have made the jig and it's fantastic. Thanks a lot. I filed down the key (bolt), using my drill press, into a taper. This meant that I could move it up and down and get a more precise measurement for the width of the circular saw blade. I hope you find this a useful addition

Thank you very much for donating the plans. As a new woodworker box joints are a way to make joints visually attractive and structural. The arbor on my saw is buggered and wont accept A dado stack. i have researched box joint jigs that use a single blade for a while and your jig is by far the best. thanks again , enjoy your summer

Great plan! I just made one myself. I’ve got no real improvements to add that haven’t been said already, but it’s taking awhile to get the fingers sized just right. It may be the spacer I’m using, or the height of my blocks (they’re lower than yours - leaving some wiggle room between them and my spacer resulting in differently sized fingers). But I think I’ve got it sorted. I just wanted to say thanks for this plan. It’s really helped me!

This is a really fantastic design. It fits a "difficulty" niche for a box joint jig that I don't think exists elsewhere. There are a hundred videos on how to make a kerf-width only jig, and then much more complicated jigs such as Matthias Wandel's and others, but this is a beautifully simple design for variable width fingers. Well done, I think I'll be building this next weekend.

You are genius . I made one for myself ( still in progress) . I used half-inch blocks. I trim one piece at a time and add a piece of paper between blocks for the second cut. Everything fits right in. Thank for sharing and again that's brilliant idea.

Why am I seeing this eight years after you invented it? UA-cam algorithm is such a mess! This thing is genius! Woodsmith magazine had an adjustable box joint jig that was ahead of anything I’ve seen, but it still required a stack dado blade. This jig is genius!

Great idea! One suggestion I can think to improve this would be to have everything on a platform, so making the sled bigger and protruding out the front so everything can be on it. That way you don't have to lift the wood off the table. Great build and video. Will definitely be trying this out!

Mario Cappellano I'm the guy that can build anything, but am more of a gear head and machinist than a "serious woodworker." My woodworking goes as far as practical stuff, stuff I need and stuff for people like my kids and my parents.
So even though I could easily make a screw advance setup with replaceable gears... I know that I'm not likely to make 50, or even 10 boxes with box joints (Unless I was just playing with a box joint jig ;-) ) so something that becomes it's own project to build, possibly even making more than one iteration refining it doesn't make sense for me.
On the other hand, circle cutting... I've been making speaker enclosures since I was 10 or 11, I have multiple other applications for it... and I'm anal retentive (the machinist part in the first paragraph). You should see the circle cutting jig I built/machined for my router. It's all about precision, 1 turn of the adjustment = 1/16" and 1/4 turns are easy (1/64"), maybe even 1/8 turns (1/128"). ;-)

  • @gmarc166

Made this over the weekend. Instead of using a bolt as a key, I cut a piece of hardwood and screwed it to the end of the lip so it hangs down to contact the template. You can then sand it to get the perfect fit. Alternatively, if the key is too thin, you can add aluminium tape to thicken it until you get the fit you're looking for.

  • @danielscheibe8694

Bought an inexpensive first table saw recently, and wanted to start a project box. However, I was not looking to spend the same on a dado set as I spent on my saw, so I did a little research and came across your video. I must admit I was skeptical at first, but figured give it a shot, nothing to lose. Built the jig in a couple of ours completely out of scrap left over from building my computer desk, and it WORKS LIKE A CHAMP! Much more effective and accurate than I expected. Cuts are still a little wide, trying to get the key dialed in, but it is getting there. Thank you for saving me about a hundred bucks.
Only addition I did make is a kind of backer bar on the back side of the blocks to keep them nice and snug to the front fence. Other than that, very solid design.

Mario, I find that most jobs requiring cutting dadoes can be done with easier-to-control results with multiple passes of a high-quality standard blade. I've made something like the "kerf maker" from Bridge City Tool Works, and have wanted something similar for doing box joints. Your jig looks as though it may be the answer. Thanks!

when you raised the board with the angle at 4:30 you forgot to add that to the bit you raised at 4:50 , I think that's why it didn't ended up perfect. Awesome jig!

For the steel guide pin, you can also file a larger screw down to size.

That's really cool. Coincidentally I was just googling "box joints without a dado" today! And then this came up on my google+. Definitely making one tomorrow :)

    • @woodfather
      @woodfather  9 років тому

I've been googling that for a few months and finally gave in and did it myself. There are lots of great jigs, but they are designed for a dado first and foremost, the single blade use is always a secondary feature and I didn't want to build something so big and advanced if it didn't work well. Send a photo when you make one!

The one I was looking at was Matthias Wandel 's screw advance box joint jig. It is awesome but would be a huge project for me, I think. This one was very easy to make. I've done all but the sliding fence so far. I got too hot and went for a swim so I will finish it tomorrow night, and will send you a photo :)

I was going to buy his plan too, it looks amazing; but only if I got a dado set. His machine is overkill for a single blade I think. It does work with one like he shows in the video, but I think with all the gears and moving parts that it would have to be made to a higher level of detail than my skills allow :-)
I bought and made his router lift a couple years back, it is fantastic.

I'm going to have to make one of these, since I don't have a Dado stack, and you just got another subscriber :)

  • @robnic52

Brilliant, elegant simple solution. Thanks, I've been thinking a stack of blocks was the way to go but how to control the side-to-side movement has been driving me nuts. Matching the pin size to the saw kerf is ingenious. I had a few ideas that might work.

  • @Glepperd

Perhaps if you raise the spacer that you use to position the second piece so it sits above the blade height and clamp it - it would keep the work piece from rotating.

Cheers Dennis, my original jig still works well so I can now say that yes, it is a viable option to buying a stack.
