I'm still sad that they took out some of the games, where Wade plays actually plays them, and put something else to replace them. I was so excited to see a clear game of Pac Man, where he gets the coin, but that didn't happen. I was so confused why there was a racing part in the movie, when in the book, even though everyone knew what the first clue was, no one knew where to even start. I was anticipating on watching Artemis and Wade's rivalry. But they starting flirting the moment they saw each other.
You have to read between the lines a bit for the movie. There's a thing called "gambler's fallacy," and it keeps you coming back to the casino table--or the race--even when you're close to losing everything. Not a bad thing; just how the human brain is wired. The King Kong who knocks your car out of the race is there to make you go "I'll find another way around him." Whoops! Not so fast. You have to go into the Halliday Archives, go through the videos of his life, fight through boredom, and *stay until you hit the certain line of dialogue which contains the hint about how to beat the race.* The narrative beat of the _Joust_ thing is *there,* it's just streamlined and put into a different form.
I personally really liked that they change all of the challenges in the movie. I already know how he does it in the book, one of the best part was observing him figure it out for the first time. I wouldn’t get that feeling again if the challenges were all the same in the movie. But since they were different, I also didn’t know what he had to and was once again observing him figure it out.
For those who've seen the movie, but not read the book, comparing the two is like comparing the old and new Jumanji. Different stories with the same end goal. Both really good stories. Personally I liked the book better, and you should read it too.
My husband and I met in Everquest in 2001, and we got married on September 17, 2005 and have been married over 12.5 years. :) Thanks for mentioning Everquest, everyone seems to forget that Everquest was around long before World of Warcraft. (Pirates Revenge guild on Bertoxxulous!)
I was kind of sad that Everquest references were lost in the movie. I never read the book, but I felt that there was a gaping hole in the movie where EQ and WoW should have been. Lots of 80's arcade game and movie references, lots of recent online game references, but 1999-2009 got lost.
I feel that in the writing of the book Nintendo was avoided due to copy right. I find it hard to believe he didn't love any Nintendo games enough to put them in his book.
The games he mentioned are mostly atari and arcade games, it's totally possible that he could've just not owned or played on a nintendo console. I know when I was a kid the only nintendo experience I had was when I went to my cousin's house to play it.
First of all, who declared that you needed to play nintendo to call yourself a gamer? Secondly, I'm sure there's plenty of people like that. It's not like nintendo had monopoly over consoles in that era. There's sega and atari consoles(which he kept mentioning games of btw). Like I said, it's possible to not own a nintendo but still have opportunities to play it occasionally. Maybe he went to his friend/family to play mario kart and liked it enough to write about it. Maybe he already had an atari and his parents couldn't afford / didn't want to buy another console.
Even though Halo was far in time after these games, it’s the game I grew up with and it was one of the best games I ever played. I’m glad he payed tribute to it in the movie with the assault rifles, the Halo area at the shop. Also the gears of war saw gun, liked that one also.
Apparently I should watch this movie. It's really sweet that this guy is paying homage to his childhood and all the good times he had alone and with friends playing video games :)
paralentor I definitely saw the movie. Sadly. I was comparing the book to the movie. Not only does the movie never mention Halliday’s obsession with the 80s and the fact that basically all of the keys and gates are 80s themed tasks. They changed everything, a little 80s character that shows up for half a second in the corner of the screen compared to the abundance of 80s references in the book is basically a joke.
I played space war on the PDP-1 at Digital's (DEC) headquarters in Maynard, MA back in 1979 while I was up there for training as a Field Service Engineer at DEC.
I'm not that old yet. My dad was 86 and my Mom was 90 (just last yr for my mom) when they passed. If I live until 2047 I'll be 94 which is possible, unless we have a major ELE (Extinction Level Event) in the next 29 years, Like the Yellowstone Caldera Supervolcano going off.
I'm gonna watch it on Thursday at some cinema with a recliner you can lean back and watch the screen on the ceiling, so cool! It's gonna be the premier.
Wow I actually learned a lot through this video, it’s very interesting to see the background of a lot of these video games I never played growing up but whole generations did :)
Earnest Cline, whenever a new video game is introduced: Aaaaaand this is another one of my favorites, really great, stayed up late playing it, really fun...
He looks kinda like Guillermo Del Toro lol I love that the challenges are completely different in the film/book, it makes for both being really awesome and one of the few times I read the book after seeing the flick and being just as amazed. Usually the book version is always better but both are unique and great!
This is a trip down video game memory lane! I remember my first video game system was Collecovision. I loved playing donkey Kong on it and Pac-Man,so much fun! Its incredible how much games have evolved since then. I really hope we get our own OASIS here in this reality...
I noticed in the movie that Halliday had a TRS Model 1 or 2 or 3, can't remember. I didn't see an actual Tandy Color Computer but maybe I missed it. I need to own this movie so I can go over it frame by frame. Loved it.
@Carsey 0111 I'm not much of a reader (i read less than 50 books in my lifetime voluntarily), but i'd be willing to check for an audiobook - do you think it'd worth it? And secondly: Do you think having seen this video without knowing the source material improves the experience of the movie (with the additional refrence-knowledge)?
It's crazy to me that he talked about black cobra in the bowling alley. I used to go to the bowling alley with my mom for her bowling league. I always hung out by the arcade cabinets watching the "big" kids playing it nonstop. It was one of my first arcade experiences, and it blew my mind.
One of my all-time favs was Cannon Fodder on the Amega. I also remember playing some of the Ultima games and getting thrashed because I was young and very inexperienced.
Carolina Estigarribia yeah, I just really wanted to enjoy it, but they really butchered th plot. I loved the book, but the movie really messed up the first half of the book, as well as a lot of the story.

I enjoyed the book and the audio book with Wil Wheaton. I liked the movie but there are several differences between the movie and the books. I enjoy the audio book best.
Movie was solid, I think it made it something anyone could enjoy. But it just can't match the depth of the story, characters, and details. Also not sure how I feel about some of the changes. That said it did add somethings that worked really well on film like the shining, the race, and some character alterations. Book still is the overall better experience 10/10!
Love his books and the movie. Brings out the game nerd in everyone. I find it funny that he mentions ET. Then there seems to be a pause of what he wants to say.....then moves on. Must have been in his contract with Spielberg to gloss over that debacle.
Love the interview.. not a name dropper but played and heard of ALL mentioned above. Love Gorf tho... Richard Garriot is a legend in 8 bit circles.. "Hail Lord British".. lol

When Cline mentioned Joust in the book my inner ten year old went ballistic. Used to play that in the arcade nonstop and quarters were lost those days.
So it was you. Just seen Spielberg's version of your "Ready Player One" ... WOW - I love videogames. My two favourites are Beatmania (I'm a professional musician - it keeps me sharp) ... and Smash TV (as you know, a superior update of Robotron) MAME is the best ever program .. it lets you play EVERY BEST GAME EVER! (as you know) I believe there are actually "front ends" out there that let you go into a virtual arcade and play your favourite game within MAME! - like an OASIS-style virtual arcade. I still use MameUI64 ... but there are loads of other options. MAME is easily the best program on my computer - and with my X-Arcade dual controller that I picked up off the floor in TK-Maxx for £60, 15 years ago, and still going strong.... I still love playing all of the classics.
Game that started me on the track of video game addiction.... Ultima II.. On an apple 2 plus. Still remember the sound made whene attacking... WAW.. CSH CSH WAW
I don’t wanna be one of those guys but the movie is much worse than the book but as a stand-alone movie I’d say it is alright but if you have read the book prepare to be disappointed
i read the book long before it was even rumored to be a movie. i LOVED the book and the movie as well. yes they changed a lot of details, but the spirit of the book and its characters was redone really well for the film. also its completely different mediums, reading the book vs watching a film, of course they had to update a crap ton of stuff. you're also forgetting that Ernest Cline wrote the screenplay too, so wtf are you talking about its the same author.
This guy looks exactly like I thought he would
madgrinchhatter funny this guy didn't look how I thought he would. Haha

They had to fit it into 1 movie
And Ludos... just mentioned once...
I dread that education will take that direction
You could have called "the Empire Strikes Back" "Bird Vs Camel" and no one would have argued with you.
*ECH!*
Best bird-camelfighting simulator ever, in any event.

I feel that in the writing of the book Nintendo was avoided due to copy right. I find it hard to believe he didn't love any Nintendo games enough to put them in his book.
I didn't know you need copyright to reference games in books
Nintendo are notoriously lawyer happy when in comes to their IPs.
The games he mentioned are mostly atari and arcade games, it's totally possible that he could've just not owned or played on a nintendo console. I know when I was a kid the only nintendo experience I had was when I went to my cousin's house to play it.

John Smith don’t go in expecting too much. There’s basically zero 80s references in the movie and the movie is almost 100% different than the book.
Then you didn't see the movie. There are TONs of 80's References. The race alone had a ton.

Joshua Cline
Not really...
Guido Anselmi The joke is that the poster has the same last name
The Joke >>>>>>
Guide Anselmi
Yeah, apologies. I don't get it.
that was great man!
I really appreciate this.
too bad hardly any of these actually made it into the movie
First 3-D graphical mmorpg was Meridian 59, and it's still running. Ultima Online is a good one, but not the first.
i dont know that author of RPO is a BEAR...
Ria Cassava lol
ALL I NOTICED
When Cline mentioned Joust in the book my inner ten year old went ballistic. Used to play that in the arcade nonstop and quarters were lost those days.
I hope the movie is better than this...
James T. sadly no, this is better. But the car race movie part was pretty awesome
Personal opinion and everything. The movie sucked. If you go in expecting the movie to be anything like the book than you’re going to be disappointed.
So it was you. Just seen Spielberg's version of your "Ready Player One" ...
WOW - I love videogames.
My two favourites are Beatmania (I'm a professional musician - it keeps me sharp)
... and Smash TV (as you know, a superior update of Robotron)
MAME is the best ever program .. it lets you play EVERY BEST GAME EVER! (as you know)
I believe there are actually "front ends" out there that let you go into a virtual arcade and play your favourite game within MAME!
Halo?
Lewis Hackett hes describing the book not the movie. The book only contains 80s references.
My favorite 4-player arcade game growing up has to be Gauntlet. "Valkyrie is about to die!"
E.T. the Videogame? You mean: The worst game of all time? K.
rena
RushingDolphin Chill that was The Witcher 3
I can see Paper Boy next to E.T.
Game that started me on the track of video game addiction.... Ultima II.. On an apple 2 plus. Still remember the sound made whene attacking... WAW.. CSH CSH WAW
Boring interview
This is easily one of my favorite movies. I want VRchat to evolve into the oasis
Hello
Sounds like Facebooks new venture Meta will become pretty Oasis-like
I don’t wanna be one of those guys but the movie is much worse than the book but as a stand-alone movie I’d say it is alright but if you have read the book prepare to be disappointed
I actually love both equally, but yeah, I can kinda understand you... A lot was changed.
Anyway, I respect your opinion.
I just read the book and I liked it
i read the book long before it was even rumored to be a movie. i LOVED the book and the movie as well. yes they changed a lot of details, but the spirit of the book and its characters was redone really well for the film. also its completely different mediums, reading the book vs watching a film, of course they had to update a crap ton of stuff. you're also forgetting that Ernest Cline wrote the screenplay too, so wtf are you talking about its the same author.
I love your book and am so pumped for the movie!!!
WHY DID YOU LET THEM RUIN YOUR BEAUTIFUL STORY??
David Petty SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK.
It was awful to being with.
Yagi I personally loved the book. It’s honestly my favorite book ever.
He wrote the screenplay so the movie wasn't ruined...
