    What I took away from this book was a question about the value of culture. To whom is 80s pop culture actually valuable in the book? How many people were spinning their wheels trying to be knowledgeable about a trivial pop culture from the past? Wade and Aech even make fun of the "poser gunters". I lived through the 80s, but Wade's detailed knowledge far surpasses what you could learn in real time. But why learn that? In the Oasis (like the internet) you can load your mind up with any number of ideas, philosophies, music, Art, and literature. Without the egg hunt, would anybody care about this snippet of pop culture? Will it still have value after the hunt? How much of the culture of the real world has been lost in the mean time? Does it even matter?

      It's trash. I can't stop rereading it, but it's trash. It's such a little boys' adventure book. And it's not a happy ending anymore. You find that they're all likely dead and the story is being told by a brain scan copy from deep space they sent out with humanity's knowledge like the voyager probe.

      I thought that same damn thing when i read that book! I was like yo wheres Grand Master Flash? L.L. Cool J? NWA? Too Live Crew? Shit hip hop was the new hype in the 80s and even white boys like me were all about that bass and lyrical flow. Well at least there was no hair metal so I guess thats kind of a positive zero. Its a good fantasy read

    Reading this book struck home SO hard for me. There was a point in my life where I completely abandoned my social life. I had only a single friend, and he was an abusive one. I couldn't relate to anyone on any level. But online, I was accepted and even sought after, whether for my sense of humor or life advice.
    Eventually, a group gathered online that started pushing people around. My group of friends had a small hand in getting rid of the group. We eventually went our own ways and I decided to get back into society, with confidence. People like to make fun of me for my time online, but that escapism ultimately improved my sense of self-worth and social skills. I even met my wife there. I moved across the country and now live somewhere with great weather and people. It was thanks to my time in isolation that I now have good, real friends.
    I recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

    Atleast for eleven episodes, even if they're the last ones
    Ranging from classic Westerns, kids novels, existential Sci-Fi dread, biblical stories, lost graphic novels from the 40s, social satire, trickster fairy tales from Norway to Ghana, Japan to Lakota, to even Georgia and South Carolina, and good old tasteful smut.

    This movie must to be a Copyright nightmare for Spielberg. I don't know how he's going to pull off the interactive movie scenes from Wargames & Monty Python, not to mention all of the classic video game references. My guess is they'll unfortunately do knockoffs, which will totally kill the book-to-screen translation. But hey, hopefully I'm wrong! Either way, I am pumped for the movie.

    • @gabrielhill1220
      @gabrielhill1220 7 років тому

      Cody Welter right to fair use of intellectual property as long as logos and only likeness are used as opposed to the movie clips themselves. The video games are actually a lot simpler than the movie references as they have been represented in an amalgamation of plenty of other media constituently. It's also a world where those things exist already as opposed to stealing the idea altogether and calling it new.

      From News articles, Spielberg doesn't want to reference any of his own movies in Ready Player One..... which is like half the book x)
      Plus the fact that he wants to "Americanize" the movie, as to make audience relate to it more. For example he's putting in more Iron Giant and no Leopardon (Asian Spiderman mech in the show).

    • @PancakemonsterFO4

    I enjoyed Ready Player One, but I think "Daemon" by Daniel Suarez took a similar plot premise and built something much more adult and meaningful out of it.
    Whether you liked RPO or not, you should go read that.

    • @Fish4Man61
      @Fish4Man61 6 років тому +1

      Similar plot premise, maybe in regards to futuristic/dystopian computer systems and their control on people and a blend of conspiracy. But at their heart, they are entirely different plots. Where is the escapism questions brought in from some other virtual world where everyone runs to? Well, that is nonexistent to a practical sense at all in Daemon, but such concepts are critical to the understanding of Ready Player One.

    • @Fish4Man61
      @Fish4Man61 6 років тому +4

      Also, the idea of something more *adult* and meaningful of it, I always have issues with it. Some of the better book series, when it comes to opening the imagination and going places have actually been towards younger audiences. In my opinion, that makes them have more meaning and more impact than some books others have considered more "adult", whatever that means. As if adults should enjoy only certain things. The only barrier that should describe is if it has sexual topics or extremely graphical violence in it's pages. Short of that, the word in my opinion is a stupid descriptor. A more useful descriptor for people who want to say 'complex books and themes', should simply be 'advanced reading', or a variation of that. Of which, many non-adults can even enjoy when they are good book readers.

    I had some trouble with suspension of disbelief when reading Ready Player One. I'm almost a native to Halliday's culture, I've dabbled in the 80s, because I'm not far removed from it. For an entire world of people who were immersed in Halliday's life, they were really slow on the uptake. Of Every geek like Hallidaly got their start in D&D, in their school days. How did it take six years for someone to finally say "It's a D&D thing on Ludus"? The second clue, a house in disrepair, was obvious to me as soon as it dropped. I've played Zork before, and the "Gunters" have played it inside out. It's the first description of the house, there. I just didn't buy that Wade didn't get that clue immediately.

    One thing I think a lot of people miss in this book is he points out that most of the world's problems were due to neglect. Neglect because the Oasis was the cause as well as the ultimate solution, which is of course why he's given the kill switch at the end of the quest, but doesn't push it yet. Maybe since he finds something to live for outside of the oasis, maybe he can use his new influence to achieve a kind of balance without having to hit that switch.

    I’m going to have to get this book on audible. I love it. Life pulls us in two directions, toward stability and having to reject the strugglers, or trying to save the strugglers and giving up a cooler life even though the strugglers seem negligent of their own well being, so who is supposed to care.

    Here's an unusual one: Thung Notes on the sonnet "Ozymandias" by Percy Bysshe Shelley. Sure, it's short and you can simply read it instead of making an abriged version for the video, but that sonnet is so freaking deep...

    Aww Sparky, I was hoping you'd make a comment on how IOI wanted to corporatise the whole OASIS and how the gunters fought to keep it real. Authenticity, such a core theme in the book.

  • @dillenbeck53531
    @dillenbeck53531 7 років тому

    What a lesson... if you live your life in a video game you'll only make social connections, find love, and become rich in the real world. Yeah, the Oasis sounds like its a total distopia and that guy learned a harsh lesson about retreating into a fantasy world. Even better, being delivered by the completely real and authentic Thug Notes rather than a comedy skit really drives home how one should not escape into fantasy. (Though, thank you for pointing out that discerning if it is a distopia or utopia isn't so cut-and-dry, most likely because it is in a grey area somewhere between those two extremes.)

    a friend wouldn't shut up about this book and gave it to me to read about a year or two ago. once i was done the first thing i thought was, "it's fine as a book, but it just wouldn't work as a movie. the world isn't thought out enough and its clear the author doesn't know what hes talking about." my friend said i was nuts.
    now there is a movie about it, so i guess we'll see.
    maybe it'll explain why there are no transport ships for hire cheaper than the teleporting, or why people waste time flying around from planet to planet when it's cheaper to teleport.
