What I took away from this book was a question about the value of culture. To whom is 80s pop culture actually valuable in the book? How many people were spinning their wheels trying to be knowledgeable about a trivial pop culture from the past? Wade and Aech even make fun of the "poser gunters". I lived through the 80s, but Wade's detailed knowledge far surpasses what you could learn in real time. But why learn that? In the Oasis (like the internet) you can load your mind up with any number of ideas, philosophies, music, Art, and literature. Without the egg hunt, would anybody care about this snippet of pop culture? Will it still have value after the hunt? How much of the culture of the real world has been lost in the mean time? Does it even matter?
I would love to see Thug Notes on The Foundation by Isaac Asimov, Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh or A Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne
It's weird having a book on Thug Notes with a happy ending.
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
@@ItsMeBarnaby no
It's trash. I can't stop rereading it, but it's trash. It's such a little boys' adventure book. And it's not a happy ending anymore. You find that they're all likely dead and the story is being told by a brain scan copy from deep space they sent out with humanity's knowledge like the voyager probe.
What about the Count of Monte Christo?
"But not RUN DMC. thats some bs" dead.
I thought that same damn thing when i read that book! I was like yo wheres Grand Master Flash? L.L. Cool J? NWA? Too Live Crew? Shit hip hop was the new hype in the 80s and even white boys like me were all about that bass and lyrical flow. Well at least there was no hair metal so I guess thats kind of a positive zero. Its a good fantasy read
I love this book, despite it being a little silly. It's awesome that you guys are doing videos on newer books though.
It came out about six years ago?
Purified Element I'm talking about "newer" books in the sense that most of the books they do are "classics".
the plot idea is very good but the writing is poor. Could be a better book with a better writer unfortunately
This summarization was incredibly generous towards this book. Honestly Cline and Spielberg should pay this channel some money for advertisement especially considering the actual quality of the writing
Even this summary is more entertainingthan that boring blue hued movie based on an awesome book. I have lost all faith in Speilberg to make movies
@@1ManNamedDan book is super cringe, movie was a snoozefest
@@ItsMeBarnaby Ok but only erotica involving giant robots and radioactive varmints please
I've read "Ready Player Two" as I am the little brother.
egezort lol cute
relatable
egezort I don't get it?!
egezort I read this comment as ,"I read this as am the little brother,".
@alex little brothers always use a 2nd controller
Can you do Thug Notes on "Their Eyes were Watching God" by Zora Neale Hurston?
This is an incredible video.
+Smarter Every Day 2 Thanks!
Smarter Every Day 2 a youtuber commenting on another vid?!?!?
I guess Im randomly asking but does anybody know of a way to get back into an instagram account..?
I was stupid forgot the password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me!
@Roland Arjun instablaster =)
@Gibson Houston I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff now.
Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
I HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE HYPE FOR A THUG NOTES EPISODE. THANKS SPARKY SWEETS.
MysteryOtakuChick I was thinking the same thing!!!
MysteryOtakuChick sparky sweets?
holy shit, a Thug Notes on a book I've actually read instead of just watching the Thug Notes.
"I'm going where they got the dankest libraries!" Yep me too!
10+ min episode? Thanks for starting my day right .
He must need a cough drop after shooting these videos. Doing DMX's voice is rough on the vocal chords.
Reading this book struck home SO hard for me. There was a point in my life where I completely abandoned my social life. I had only a single friend, and he was an abusive one. I couldn't relate to anyone on any level. But online, I was accepted and even sought after, whether for my sense of humor or life advice.
Eventually, a group gathered online that started pushing people around. My group of friends had a small hand in getting rid of the group. We eventually went our own ways and I decided to get back into society, with confidence. People like to make fun of me for my time online, but that escapism ultimately improved my sense of self-worth and social skills. I even met my wife there. I moved across the country and now live somewhere with great weather and people. It was thanks to my time in isolation that I now have good, real friends.
I recommend this book to anyone and everyone.
We need Thug Notes to return. Not only are they funny as Hell, but also got people more into reading as a hobby.
Atleast for eleven episodes, even if they're the last ones
Ranging from classic Westerns, kids novels, existential Sci-Fi dread, biblical stories, lost graphic novels from the 40s, social satire, trickster fairy tales from Norway to Ghana, Japan to Lakota, to even Georgia and South Carolina, and good old tasteful smut.
"The post-breakup hustle: work out, stay busy, buy sex dolls."

Erica Houser didn't want to let it go

why didn't i find this awesome channel sooner
This movie must to be a Copyright nightmare for Spielberg. I don't know how he's going to pull off the interactive movie scenes from Wargames & Monty Python, not to mention all of the classic video game references. My guess is they'll unfortunately do knockoffs, which will totally kill the book-to-screen translation. But hey, hopefully I'm wrong! Either way, I am pumped for the movie.
Cody Welter right to fair use of intellectual property as long as logos and only likeness are used as opposed to the movie clips themselves. The video games are actually a lot simpler than the movie references as they have been represented in an amalgamation of plenty of other media constituently. It's also a world where those things exist already as opposed to stealing the idea altogether and calling it new.
from what I've heard they are looking at what Warner brothers own and replacing bits of the story with those. so war games will become better off dead and etc. As long as the story is good, and its a fun movie I dont care.
Plots way different now. Forget riddles, think more car racing, at least that's what I'm seeing in the trailer. I'm disappointed too but it's still written by Cline at least
From News articles, Spielberg doesn't want to reference any of his own movies in Ready Player One..... which is like half the book x)
Plus the fact that he wants to "Americanize" the movie, as to make audience relate to it more. For example he's putting in more Iron Giant and no Leopardon (Asian Spiderman mech in the show).
Cody Welter turns out they will simply replace the characters they don’t have the rights on with more iconic characters, like the Iron Gigant. This isn’t a bad think though IF they do it properly
That has to be one of the best book reviews I have ever watched.
i love the subtle changes to the characters pictures, a nice little easter egg for those who know the story
Thug Notes on House of Leaves? I think that'd be pretty cool.
yesssssss
This book was so good, I read it twice. Believe me, if you have ANY interest in nerd culture and/or stuff from the 1980's, you need to check this out, I'm serious.
Kaizen Twice? I’ve read it 8 times. Get on my level.
Pastrami I would, but I'm encouraging other people to read it. I'm sorry.
I'm rereading it rn
Reading it rn, Wade is a terrible human being and feels/felt like a self-insert for cline after doing some research around the time he made this book
@@gloopaboopin a lot of stories are self-inserts. Some are noticeable and some aren't but in the end it's a story they made. Plus, just because a character can be a jerk doesn't mean the author is too, considering its a non-fictional character, the author can give them all sorts of ideals.
Respect, dawg, for highlighting one of my favorite modern classics!
No matter what I'm doing, I bail on it to watch a new Thug Notes
womp womp Porn. We all know you're talkin about porn.
This book was honestly one of my favorites in high school.
This should be a tv series instead of a movie
2018
its Alejandro oh no, Hollywood will FCK that up...like all my fav books 😩😩😩
really simular to sword art online..
I dunno. This book was basically written like a Spielburg movie, and guess who's directing it? It'll probably be fine.
I feel like they gonna fuck it up if it's a TV show cuz lower budget and this book would need a lot of special effects they would need a game of thrones budget
I enjoyed Ready Player One, but I think "Daemon" by Daniel Suarez took a similar plot premise and built something much more adult and meaningful out of it.
Whether you liked RPO or not, you should go read that.
Similar plot premise, maybe in regards to futuristic/dystopian computer systems and their control on people and a blend of conspiracy. But at their heart, they are entirely different plots. Where is the escapism questions brought in from some other virtual world where everyone runs to? Well, that is nonexistent to a practical sense at all in Daemon, but such concepts are critical to the understanding of Ready Player One.
Also, the idea of something more *adult* and meaningful of it, I always have issues with it. Some of the better book series, when it comes to opening the imagination and going places have actually been towards younger audiences. In my opinion, that makes them have more meaning and more impact than some books others have considered more "adult", whatever that means. As if adults should enjoy only certain things. The only barrier that should describe is if it has sexual topics or extremely graphical violence in it's pages. Short of that, the word in my opinion is a stupid descriptor. A more useful descriptor for people who want to say 'complex books and themes', should simply be 'advanced reading', or a variation of that. Of which, many non-adults can even enjoy when they are good book readers.
I have never in my life encountered someone else who read daemon
Fish4Man61 I read a youthbook (a sequel on a zombiebook from the same writer) with graphical violence and a main protagonist who suffers more then realistically possible. Never again
Reliken thank you for the suggestion. I was let down by RPO, but look forward to a slightly more advanced book, and hopefully more advanced plot. Thank you again.
Loved this book and loved that it was narrated by Hwill Hwheaton! I liked it, sure its a bit contrived and predictable but i still enjoyed it.
The way he wrote it... wait, what? You mean Will Wheaton?
Bill Malcolm Yes Hwill Hwheaton
Yes, have you never heard of Hawahill Ahaweeton?
Why are you saying it like that?
It's actually really weird to hear someone other than Wil reading it.
Just finished reading the book this morning.
I really loved it. I grew up in the 80's, so this book brought back a lot of memories.
May you please review watership down?
I just finished the book this second ! I've been waiting to be able to watch this video
I put this book down after the big ball room dance/laser fight scene. Glad to have a video to finally bookend this stiry for me.
Literally finished the book last night. What a coinkydink.
so you know he botched the characters and story line in this review?
wait im tryna write a summary of this book rn and i come across thugnotes. this has got to be the best thing ever.
Do "The Gunslinger" by Stephen King!!!!
Garrett Lent do the entire series.
yes!! But they should do every book in the series.
Garrett Lent definitely!!, but they should do IT first, because the movie is coming out
I still can't believe that this Clint eastwood knock-off tossed jake from a cliff
This book is like a love letter to the hardcore gaming/nerd/pop culture, especially anyone who was in their youth during the 80s & 90s +.
It was a great read and I hope Spielberg does a good job adapting the book to film.
Do Metro 2033 !
yeh metro 2033 please!
YES. I heard that the games are shit compared to the books... SO THAT SAYS A LOT O_O
PhyreI3ird The books are lit. I think the third is out in English. Is MGM still making a movie or what.
YES
I'm halfway through it right now. I've been enjoying it so far, but I heard that the English translation doesn't quite stack up to the original. No way for me to tell if that's true, though.
I miss these...any discussion of bringing them back? Please at least to, for example, Books 2-5 of A Song of Ice and Fire.
can't wait to see Speilbergs movie about this book
Adrian Castro you know that there's going to be a panel at comic Con for the movie.
I've been wanting Jeff Bridges as Ogden Morrow. Come on, you can see it.
Kai Hicks i think the trailer will be released there too
Adrian Castro dude same
tell me if half the references are still there im expecting most will be cut out due to copyrights
DUDE! The skin issue that Art3mis was afraid showing was on point in this video! Only people who have actually read it would have caught that! GOOD ON YOU GUYS!!!
I had some trouble with suspension of disbelief when reading Ready Player One. I'm almost a native to Halliday's culture, I've dabbled in the 80s, because I'm not far removed from it. For an entire world of people who were immersed in Halliday's life, they were really slow on the uptake. Of Every geek like Hallidaly got their start in D&D, in their school days. How did it take six years for someone to finally say "It's a D&D thing on Ludus"? The second clue, a house in disrepair, was obvious to me as soon as it dropped. I've played Zork before, and the "Gunters" have played it inside out. It's the first description of the house, there. I just didn't buy that Wade didn't get that clue immediately.
cool...
weird flex but ok
One thing I think a lot of people miss in this book is he points out that most of the world's problems were due to neglect. Neglect because the Oasis was the cause as well as the ultimate solution, which is of course why he's given the kill switch at the end of the quest, but doesn't push it yet. Maybe since he finds something to live for outside of the oasis, maybe he can use his new influence to achieve a kind of balance without having to hit that switch.
I love your thug notes videos
No RunDMC....LOL best line ever
They should do snowcrash
Please do Treasure Island next.
He did Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde at some point. Do they re-visit authors very often? I'm kind of thinking they don't, though FWIW, I'd love to see Treasure Island as you suggest, or maybe Kidnapped.
YES! I was hoping you would cover this book!
Do William Gibson's Neuromancer!
Thug Notes needs to narrate a book on audible xD I would listen to that all day! haha good stuff as always!
What the actual fuck ? I literally just finished it a few minutes ago ! Holy fucking shit guys...
what do you mean
Gabriel Williams I think he just finished reading the book.
Wow, guess Wisecrack make new content for you specifically. What will you do with your newly discovered power over them?
Turki same
Turki I just finished it too, omg I love this book. I love everything about it.
My whole fam and me LOVED ready player one, thank you fort this.
You should do world war z
Wow, now I can't wait for the Steven Spielberg adaptation.
Yeah it really can't be. No way you could get the rights for all the shit it references.
As long as most of the things are the same I’ll still consider it good. or at least expect to enjoy it.
dig the illustrations, much respect to the artist(s)
Love this book
I’m going to have to get this book on audible. I love it. Life pulls us in two directions, toward stability and having to reject the strugglers, or trying to save the strugglers and giving up a cooler life even though the strugglers seem negligent of their own well being, so who is supposed to care.
*swang and bang*
Can you do 'A Tree Grows in Brooklyn' by Betty Smith?
Would LOVE to see an episode on the show "The Last Man on Earth". Such a unique and criminally underrated show. An episode from Wisecrack would be awesome in its own right, but would also get more people to watch it. PLEASE GUYS?! PRETTY PLEASE!?!?!
Haven't even started the summary yet, and this is already my new favorite channel
Yay finally!!
You guys should do a thug notes episode on C.S. Lewis' Space Trilogy, especially the third one, "That Hideous Strength." It is probably the most underrated dystopian novel there is.
Or perhaps, William Gibson's "Neuromancer"?
Good job with the analysis. I didn’t catch the part where people are trapped living in the past. Thanks!
Wow this book sounds so exciting that I've decided to pause the video and come back after finishing it
Damn, Erica Houser really wanted a vid on this
Thug notes is probably one of the greatest series of all time
This is the first video I ever watched of yours and I just finished reading the book 4 times. Your video is awesome!!!!
Gonna go buy and read the book before i watch this video, cant wait to watch this video in a two days, gonna leave a like
i finished the book
trisram lol frfr
Save yourself the disappointment and just watch this video or see the film.
I miss these videos. Better than Earthling Cinema.
Do Gravity's Rainbow
One of my favorite books and movies!
The Philosophy of the Filthy Frank Show
best anime
Vox did this
Here's an unusual one: Thung Notes on the sonnet "Ozymandias" by Percy Bysshe Shelley. Sure, it's short and you can simply read it instead of making an abriged version for the video, but that sonnet is so freaking deep...
American Gods by Neil Gaiman, like if you agree.
Could you do a video over "Bud Not Buddy"? My school is reading this book and I think the students would love to see one of your videos for a book they are reading?
im here boooiiiiii
Watching these has encouraged me to pick up reading published books again. Especially classics.
after the trailer and this I really want to reread this and Armada again!
Steven Spielberg said his bringing a videogame twist to this movie experience. I'd love to watch the rest of this video, but I want to keep it spoiler free for me, so have this like and comment instead.
I've never watched your channel before Wizecrack, But dude you rock this shit.
Aww Sparky, I was hoping you'd make a comment on how IOI wanted to corporatise the whole OASIS and how the gunters fought to keep it real. Authenticity, such a core theme in the book.
What a lesson... if you live your life in a video game you'll only make social connections, find love, and become rich in the real world. Yeah, the Oasis sounds like its a total distopia and that guy learned a harsh lesson about retreating into a fantasy world. Even better, being delivered by the completely real and authentic Thug Notes rather than a comedy skit really drives home how one should not escape into fantasy. (Though, thank you for pointing out that discerning if it is a distopia or utopia isn't so cut-and-dry, most likely because it is in a grey area somewhere between those two extremes.)
Just saw the comic con trailer....glad I watched Thug Notes talk about it first
I read this book, as a nerd myself it hit close to home. It was a great read...hopefully the movie is as good.
Just so you know, there's heavy mention of RUN DMC in Ernie's newest book ARMADA. You should check it out!
You should make a video on "The Merry Wives of Windsor" by Shakespeare!
Thank for doing a video about this book.It became one of my favorites of all time.
a friend wouldn't shut up about this book and gave it to me to read about a year or two ago. once i was done the first thing i thought was, "it's fine as a book, but it just wouldn't work as a movie. the world isn't thought out enough and its clear the author doesn't know what hes talking about." my friend said i was nuts.
now there is a movie about it, so i guess we'll see.
maybe it'll explain why there are no transport ships for hire cheaper than the teleporting, or why people waste time flying around from planet to planet when it's cheaper to teleport.
I love that you do these reviews like this! Amazing job!
Hey Dr. Sweets! Love your hilarious, educational videos! Please consider "Never Fall Down" by Patricia McCormick!
PEACE
American Gods!!!
I like this book more because of the idea of an mmo that vast and incredible.
I can’t tell you how much I love this analysis!!!! Well done
This book is nothing more than a bunch of name dropping.
perpetuated yea there's tons of references, but there is also a main story line with plots, twists and turns.
Book is hot garbage, movie was way better
The book SUCKED.
Why would people go see a movie of this? I have heard absolutely not one good thing about it, and the book itself advise you to avoid such things. Why watch this movie? I think I would rather shoot myself in the face.
It depends though, the movie is but the book,.....
I needed this thug notes cause I reallyliked ready player one, and i wanna be ready for the movie
yeet
You should definitely do a video on the Locke and key graphic novels by Joe hill!
