  • Today on the 80 Series Land Cruiser build/restoration, we wrap up some loose ends after the engine rebuild! The transmission cooler and radiator hoses were leaking, and the spark plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor needed to be replaced! Lastly, we needed to set the timing on this engine, and after that we took it for a long test drive to a lake!

    Are you planning on doing a full refurbishment of the bushings and body mounts? I know they improve the handling a heck of a lot especially at 20 off years of road use.

      I'm just starting that journey on my 1995 and after having done just 1 of the front control arms, the difference is amazing.

    i haven't seen in the comments if noticed any 'pep' after the rebuild, have you noticed? i have a 240k motors with very low compression and wondered what the improvement after a rebuild would be. thanks!

    • @RM_Garage
      @RM_Garage  Рік тому

      Hey Jeff, thanks! I have to be honest, I didn't get to drive it much before the rebuild so I don't have much to compare it to. My motor did have great compression before the rebuild so I'm sure I didn't gain much. However, if you have low compression I would bet that you'd see quite the improvement with a rebuilt engine.

      With the crusty grommet or with them giving you the wrong part?

    Little late to the party on this; great work. Did you piece together your own bits for the bottom end or go with a kit?

    • @RM_Garage
      @RM_Garage  7 місяців тому +1

      Just pieced together honestly without any rhyme or reason. Found ACL race rod bearings for cheap on eBay, and the machine shop had the mains. Clearances were perfect so I went with it.

    Hi mate did you replace that big O ring that goes around the Dizzy cap to keep the dust and water out also your steering damper looks like it’s on the wrong way mine is on the other way so water doesn’t sit inside the damper

    Glad to see im not the only one sitting in my garage measuring my trans cooler hose lines 🤣😭
    Did you happen to move to the PNW? Your area looks a lot like eastern WA/OR.

    Where in CA did you move from? Does ID require smog/emission testing? If not, you’ll be able to remove that whole PAIR system like I did on my 94 when I moved from CA to TN.

    • @RM_Garage
      @RM_Garage  5 місяців тому

      Fresno. ID does not require any smog or emissions testing at all, PAIR system is gone already. 😀

    Interesting choice to skimp on about $200 worth of hoses and clamps after all that work on the engine.

      Fixed now! It was because of the rush with the move. I had to get it running and on a trailer by a certain date and didn't have time.

    Curious as to why OEM parts were not used for the trans cooler and cooling system? Aftermarket parts are reaching prices of OEM parts these and in some cases are more expensive than OEM. Also hoses are molderd in the correct manner. Solid build!

    • @RM_Garage
      @RM_Garage  10 місяців тому

      I tried. Unobtanium for the hoses. I used the flexi coil thing to bend them in the right way. Did what I could

    • @RM_Garage
      @RM_Garage  10 місяців тому

      As far as radiator hoses, IMO just a hose. Gates makes great hoses. No issues with aftermarket wires or ignition components as of yet. Will replace with OEM if any issues arise but thinking it’ll be fjne

    You didnt mention the difference the t-case regearing has made power wise. How does it drive with the large tires? Do you feel it needs the axles regeared as well? Ive been thinking about doing the t-case regearing on mine. Currently on 33's but id like to go to 35's or 37's

    • @RM_Garage
      @RM_Garage  10 місяців тому +1

      The t-case gearing makes no difference power wise because it's just the low-range gear. In low-range it is much more controllable due to the lower gearing. In normal driving, it's the same.
      As far as power with the 38's, it could use a re-gear of course. However, I also come from a pickup with a 90hp 22RE and 37s so even with the stock gears and 38's, this 1FZ has way more power and get-up-and-go than the 22RE had with 5.29 gears.
      In the future I plan to go to 4.88s.

    • @Dimitron20
      @Dimitron20 10 місяців тому

      @RM_Garage ok from what it looked like i thought you changed out the high gearing along with the low gearing.
