MORAL TO THE STORY: Keep everything as stock as possible and work hard at keeping your weight down. And if possible try to do as much maintenance as possible (not easy for some I know). Great video mate. Thanks for the update👍
Adding modifications sure do add another level of complexity, however I will stated that the turbo failure, starter motor failure and leaking intercooler (all the expensive items) were issues without modification. It is disappointing, but it is what it is in the end. Either way, we are lucky we had some savings and we are back on the road having a trip of lifetime 👍
Chrikey must have more dollars then I ever will have, quite happy to run my 4x4 almost stock and regular servicing, all these mods are a nightmare along with redicillus extreme tracks.
Good honest video mate , good to see your just taking it on the chin, I’m certainly not a cruiser fan but am a diesel mechanic of 35 years, and your spot on when you say they all have their faults 👍
Mate you have a great attitude. I'd be curled up in the corner of that happened to me. Thanks for the real life problems that travellers go through. Keen up the great work
Better to do your own maintenance. Not only save thousands, you know the work has been done, especially brake checks. $18k buys everything you've replaced & the tools to do the jobs required yourself. My old Cruiser has just passed 1.7 million k's. Imagine the costs if I'd let others have at it? Very informative video! 👍
@brianl351 Maybe so, as far as carrying all tools is concerned. Most jobs use the same tools, with a only a few required. The non critical (fail to proceed type) can sometimes wait.
Yeah, for sure. Much to be saved from your own work. As mentioned here though, much thought to do it on the road. Things like turbos and starters really need a shop and machining the front rotors would be impossible as you could carry them there. But I hear what you are saying, we pay for the benefit to enjoy our time on the road 👍
@@XploringOz As they say, convenience costs. Due to my line/s of work, I find myself in some "interesting" situations from time to time, having to repair things on the fly. Having access to machining equipment is difficult at times, having to nurse things to wherever they are at. Thankfully, not for my vehicle! My Mrs gave up complaining about my trashed shirts & shorts years ago. It took a while for her to get it. "Bean counters"! 🤣
@brianl351 Prevention is better than the cure, for sure. It's the unforseen that can catch out anyone. It sure doesn't hurt to have a good look & listen around after a hard slog.
These things are bullet proof standard, once the mods start your reliant on good workmanship and when you use it the way you do, your bound to run into issues regardless of brand. Glad you have a good attitude about it.
Turbo's and dusting issues are unfortunately far too common more so on a stock VDJ than those fitted with a quality aftermarket airbox. Nathan has worked much harder than most to mitigate these issues but unfortunately once the damage is done it is only a matter of time before they fail sadly.
Fantastic update Nathan, hoping that the rest of the trip doesn't have the same issues. The hiccups along the way soon fade for the wonderful memories created. Cheers 🍺
Thanks mate, appreciate that! We are having an absolute blast out here and the problems have almost disappeared completely already! Positive always trumps the negatives 👍
Love your channel, love my 200 LC, after owning a troopy for many years and now my 200 I am not put off but appreciate your report and honesty, thank you.
Thanks for sharing your experiences Nathan. You are doing a great service by sharing where things can go wrong. It will definitely help other cruiser owners like myself to learn from it. I definitely appreciated your video. Cheers and goodluck to no more issues with cruiser. Looking forward to more videos of your adventures!
Good update, and an honest one at that. Pleased to see your keeping the vehicle. I was originally looking at a 200 series but ended up buying a 2005 GU Patrol factory TD42, for its simplicity, reliability and ease of repairs. Had it coming up two years now and it’s only ever seen a mechanic for a road worthy since buying. I’m lucky that I have time to maintain it myself and also learn how stuff works / goes together. Hope your trip is going well and the cruiser gives you no more grief.
Thanks mate, appreciate it 👍 Yes the mighty TD42 is a great option and great to hear it’s working out for you 👍 Might be time to look at servicing the 200 myself upon return back home
Thats always been my plan precovd. Have a gq td42 but burns a bit of oil. May I ask how much you spent? Gu td42ti would be fantastic but not keen on spending over 40k
Gotta love the gu patrols. I now have a y62 with the fruit, and it's been a great truck so far. However, I really miss my GU! That truck took me everywhere and was easy to maintain. The simple things are often the best, especially out in the bush 😊
With only 155kW and 450Nm, why is it even called mighty? That really is 4 cyl Hilux / D Max territory. And the Isuzu 4jj3 engine will last at least half a million clicks. So, this 4.5V8 seems a bit too much for too little. Toyota factory fitted Mercedes-Benz engines to Landcruisers; different engine types incl the Unimog OM314 4 cyl. But on the 300, Toyota opted for petrol and Diesel Mazda V6 engines.
So glad you pointed out you use your car as a boat as well. Everyone knows boats are money pits and no doubt this is where the expensive came from. Looking forward to doing something similar. Really enjoying this round Aus series.
Very good review. I owned a new 40th anniversary and it was worked very hard as a tow vehicle but never off road. Superb quality. My 2014 Colorado also new but I use it as a tow vehicle and completely reliable. But and this is the huge difference I don't use my vehicles for the extreme adventure your 200 has been used for. I think my Colorado's reliance on electronics would result in failure pretty quickly. I don't think the seals would stand up to immersion. It is one of the Big pluses of a 1960s Landrover or cruiser they are really simple and robust. And easy to change all fluids after immersion. But of course they cannot tow a load like a 200. And old school is very inefficient and expensive on fuel.
@@rosewood1 Thanks mate, appreciate that. Yes, everything has a compromise to some extent, us the end we are fortunate to be doing what we are and have the option to hit the harder tracks when we can 👍 I still love this vehicle nonetheless
Bugger regarding the issues. Definately a great way to look at it. The quality family time is priceless. But what a great and informative video. You do a great job in balancing tech info and laymen's terms with these style vids. Helps those with or about to purchase 200 series vdj, armed with more knowledge.
A very well thought out conclusion to your video Nathan and you’re right “money comes and money goes”. The whole family will remember this trip for the rest of their/ your lives. Tks for sharing
Thanks Jim! Although words I live by, I would still enjoy this money in my wallet 😆 But I wouldn't forgo what I have now to have more money! Life is short and we are living it as a family in the best way we can 👍
Water over the bonnet means definitely above wading depth limits. Snorkel only helps with air intake but doesn’t change the wading depth limit and the potential damage to other parts of the vehicle.
Of course, I'm not denying I've have taken this cruiser through some challenging terrain, but it's not out of the question for a lot of true overlanders. These are definitely things to be aware of
Still don't understand why people continue to do deep water crossing"s without tarp over the front. The time it takes to fit and the benefits of not flooding the engine bay is huge hot alternator hot starter hot idler pulleys all suck water in not only that but the benefits of not drowning all electrical connections especially in high humidity areas. Just make up a canvas tarp that clips onto top radiator support after lifting the bonnet and tuck it down behind the bullbar. Cheers mate love your topics.
Absolutely mate, I hear you. To be honest, we didn't have them on this particular trip when we did that crossing. I bought one as soon as I returned last year and it's still in the vehicle in the rare case I have to do something like that again 👍
So mainly maintenance issues on an almost 10yr old vehicle that has done a heap of off road work, and now tows a heavy van most of the time.Lucky you are not driving some of the other brands.Have a good time, and keep up the great vids.
Good balanced content. I totally agree with your statement that a lot of the problems are aftermarket. The more you modify a car to "improve" it, the greater the scope for failure. That said, you've got a brilliant touring rig that is now sorted! Enjoy...👍
Cheers mate. Absolutely you are right, although I would add a stock cruiser would struggle in certain scenarios I expose my vehicle too. This being said, I’ve taken that into consideration and budget when modifying 👍
Sorry to hear about the problems you've had with your 200. I have been reading some off the comments all l can say is there is a lot of 200 hate and modification hate out there. We have a 2012 200 about the same km as yours lot of mods 4 ton gvm and use it all traveling around this great country. I am 100 % confident to go remote our cruiser and in comfort. Keep up the great posts and have a wonderful trip.
Thanks mate, appreciate that 🙏 I agree, they are great vehicles, I think I've just had a whole lot happen in quick succession, but realistically, with where I take my vehicles, I'm not disappointed in it's performance.
Ouch some of those prices make ones eyes water.. but memories are priceless. Personally with my LC 200 no deep water crossings ,I have see many modern 4wd with electronics destroyed in Nolans brook & other crossing on th cape . The problems on friends LC electronics keep occurring for years due to corrosion on plugs terminals ECU etc. We did all those crossings on the cape in simple old Hiluxs and old Landrovers no electronics, water flows in and out few issues. I haven't touched my LC transmission just tow in 4 or 5 on occasions but van is 2.5 ton max. Enjoying your content safe travels.
They sure are scary figures ! But worth it at the end. Yeah, electronics are a weak point but unfortunately also a common part in all modern day 4WD’s. The cruiser will be around for longer to provide many more adventures to come 👍
It is always a shock when you do your sums! Thanks for the insight. I might look at an updated transmission cooler if/when I get a R4T. I like your outlook on life, money and travels.
Thanks mate, appreciate that. It sure does add up, but I dare say most don’t have the number or severity of issues I’ve experienced. The cooler would be a good option as a helping hand for sure 👍
Good on you Nathan for sharing - very informative. Keep the videos coming! Just love your attitude ... taking the challenges & setbacks in your stride.
Firstly sorry for the expenses but a huge thankyou for being so up front and honest. There are so many people claiming nothing ever goes not to plan. I started watching you a couple of years ago that was why I bought the ultra gauge along with your experiments on tires etc. Here's hoping you future expenses are minimal great content.
Thanks mate. It has been a rough year on the bank account, but the experiences are so much valuable 👍 Thanks for letting me know and supporting the channel, its great to hear that people are getting value from these videos 🙏
You've got me reconsidering whether I should upgrade from a 1HDFTE 100 series to a 200 or 300 series. 🤔 So far on our lap it's been faultless, touch wood. Great video as always!
For sure, I had a 105 series a couple of years ago and it was great. I mean the reliability was king, but there's no comparing many of the features between the two vehicles. They are designed for slightly different purposes! I do miss my 105 though 😢 Sold it before COVID too, at way to cheap...
Great video mate. I’d say the best part about it is you keep on top of it and without the necessary fixes it just wouldn’t be possible to do what you guys are doing so massive hats off to you 👌🏻👌🏻
Thanks man 🙏 Would be nice without the price tag, but hey we use it... that's for sure! *chucked a little clip of the Bridle Track bogging in there too* 😆
@@XploringFive Haha, YT famous 😆 Still can't believe I got bogged there 🤦♂ And then you just made it look like nothing 😆 Some editing will be required there for that episode lol
@@XploringOz hahaha 😝 well to be totally fair, you did test the waters first so I had a heads up, I think I pressed every button and switch in the cockpit that I could find and did the sign of the cross 🤣🤣
Wow! I run a petrol 200 series and tow a 3.2 tonne boat extensively, quite regularly from Vic to SA, which includes many significant hills. I’ve done nothing to my cruiser except regular servicing including the auto. I just question some of these mods compared to factory. I enjoyed your candid video on the costs and wish you happier travels in the future.
I don't feel that bad now I hung onto my Disco 2 V8. Your honesty is most appreciated and I agree with you that you have put your vehicle through some very tough and challenging environments. Personally, I avoid that which I learned from driving land rovers in the Army. Why go looking for it. If that's your thing then you will pay $$$ for it in the end. Fortunately for me, I can perform a lot of the necessary servicing of my Disco 2 myself but due to the Ace system, anything to do with that has to go in. Good luck on your travels and thanks for a meaningful video.
Cheers mate, appreciate your comment 👍 Everyone is a little different and I don’t try to come across disappointed, just want to make others aware of costs in these types of applications. I love this vehicle and no doubt it will feature on the channel for many more years to come 👍
Wow !!! you are right about add-ons in many cases the vehicle needs to be re tweak to complement the new part; it also looks like you have put your vehicle certainly beyond its design capabilities. I have to commend you for your honesty which is reflected in your passion and enjoyment of life. Well done!!!!
I'm really glad it hasn't cost you your trip, that's all that matters. Great video, mate, keeping it all real and open for people to inspect. Been through all the comments. Enjoyed your replies even more 👍 Tally-ho and onwards you go!
Thanks mate, hopefully some people will understand where my money goes 😂 🤦♂️ Money is disposable, I rather spend it on experiences with the family now while I still can 👍
Holy Shit mate! 3.6 tonnes down the Waterfall Way, man you have some big stones. Mate I feel your pain with extra expenses other than servicing I own a Land Rover Discovery 4 but I wouldn’t want anything else as nothing else compares with the ride comfort and out of the showroom capability. Good luck with the rest of your adventure.
Yeah man, our combination is 6.8t, so this was a little nerve-racking 😬 Hopefully we are done with the big ticket items for a little while now 🤞 Awesome man, glad you are happy with your setup, I love how everyone is different and the market can provide us all with the right option for our own personal use and preference 👍
The old "King of the Road" hey? 😳 Sounds like you have had a tough run Nathan, but glad to hear you're philosophical about it. All vehicles have their issues and I find it silly when people can't be open and honest about it like you have been because of brand loyalty or fear of being mocked. As you say, it is only money and the time spent making memories with your family is the most in valuable! Enjoy the rest of your travels. 👍
It proves that the vehicle is quite strong. The failures you experienced are primarily due to heavy modification you have done and punishment you are giving it. Greater chunk of the costs seems point towards upgrade failures. Cv joints, brakes rotors, diffs, transmission will mean you have to upgrade to match increased weight.
The vehicle is incredibly strong, however turbos, starter motors and brake rotors (rears only) indicate other problems than that caused from my mods. The rear brakes had an issue, whether it be debris caught up within or not checked properly last service, but turbos and starters haven't been modified and shouldn't be failing.
Thanks for your honesty. My learning from your info is to travel light and stash some cash for the unexpected. But, I’m not the sort of fella who can afford to take risks on deep wading and rock crawling. For me, with adult kids, I’m happy with my tent or check into a cabin, motel etc
Thanks mate, I’m glad this helped somewhat. Absolutely I understand. Travelling full time turns the cruiser into a home, rather than just a short trip warrior! Something I’m still learning 😆
Wow I've had a 200 series since 2012 it spends its life in the bush for my work and I have never replaced a part. Maybe it's all the aftermarket stuff causing the problems
No doubt that would be some of the reason, but things like dusted turbos are unlikely to be as a result of my doing. Glad to hear some positive experiences though 👍
I’ve done all repairs on my 100 series at home in my driveway and my total cost ( I keep a spreadsheet ) after all maintenance over 4 years is $4700 You can save a lot of money doing it yourself.
For sure, but when you are on the road, you don't exactly have a driveway. I know it's possible, but on the road I pay for the privilege and convenience to have my vehicle serviced 👍
I'm leaning towards a petrol yank tank these days, 4.5t towing and no EGR and DPF issues to deal with, rather just pay for the extra fuel and have minimal issues.
Yeah, they have their towing benefits, but you do still need to consider their GVM for the mid size variants. The RAM 1500, F150 Chevy 1500 all have similar GVM weights as the cruiser which can cause issues. The larger 2500 models or full size Utes are seriously expensive... They have their benefits don't get me wrong, but I love the LC200 and the short wheelbase 4WD's for the tracks .
Myself and a couple of mates all have 200 series cruisers. They are set up for towing so gvm upgrades ect. We all have the air cleaner upgrade now because of you. We all have the lockup kits(richards). Hope your not upset but we all refer to you as the guy who's always stuffing around with his car. Im sure you cant drive without listening for something to go wrong. Seems it was those water crossings that have led to your issues. Hope it was worth it. Re electrical issues. Simple is better. Seems you've created your own monster. Reasonably stock cruisers with a few mods seems to be the way to go And a lot less stressful. Cheers and happy travels Paul
Another brilliant video Nathan. Like you I am extremely tough on my 200. It doesn’t get driven around on the streets that a day. It is in my garage and that it is on the tracks and typically it is doing the tough tracks. Having a 3.2 t van on the back as you say things wear faster and quicker. That’s a lot of money for sure, but your summary at the end is perfect. You cannot put a price on taking your children around Australia.
This confirms what I've held about my 80 series....it will always be less expensive to upkeep over a new vehicle. Especially when you throw in the cost of the new rig itself.
Sorry to hear about your problems Nathan but don`t let it get you down enjoy your time on the road mate. Better to do your own maintenance which I do while on the road will save you heaps of money and you really get to know your vehicle as you say it does not take long for the services to come along.I change my oil usually at 5000k or 7000k depending where I am oil is cheap engines are not and I only use genuine filters and I do carry parts with me. I must admit I don`t modify the tranny or the motor just to keep it reliable which my GX 200 has been so far. I tow a 3.2 tonne caravan and I find the motor has plenty of power for what I want to do.
It's probably some good advice mate and something that I've always put off and had someone else do , it might be time to look into this. Hopefully you don't suffer anything like this, but I sure you won't 👍
That's the problem with modern touring setups, they have so much stuffed into them they are essentially mobile houses that bounce around as though they're built on a fault line, so you can expect house style maintenance costs
Appreciate the honesty. No car is perfect, but few say it how it is. Considering how you use your car, think it's holding up well. And no, I'm not a Toyota man.
I hope you had had the compression tested prior to the turbo's Nathan. Often overlooked but 100% critical. You know our thoughts on VDJ dusting issues.
Yikes. But, you think Eastern AU has hills? We are towing in NZ - real hills - very hard on brakes and transmission. Good luck with the rest of your trip.
Haha, I have been over there a couple of times and I understand! We have it good here in Aus, but WA makes a pool table surface look rough 😆 Thanks for the watch mate 👍
I would agree, you are pushing it hard plus towing a heavy van with mods from stock. If what it gives though is joy then as long as you aren’t spending the next 5 years paying off debt, then it is money well spent. Enjoy the travels!
Brake overheating can be caused by the new brake fluids attacking the rubber hose on the inside. Brakes work fine at normal temperatures but when hot the brake caliper pressure cannot release and the problem becomes a feedback critical. Have a feel when bleeding brakes how much pressure you need to bleed that can indicate the inside of the hose restriction.
My mate had lot same issues with his cruiser he sold it and bought a v8 petrol patrol and has never had a problem and it uses less fuel when towing his caravan and way cheaper to service
@@XploringOz I'm guessing you'd agree the turbos is the worst part, at that price and given it's far from warranty you'd be better off with A/M turbos would be my thinking? The vehicle itself has slightly less than average k's. Brakes is to be expected and some maintenence in every car gets overlooked from time to time that's why we need careful and meticilious mechanics, many get a bit careless. Happy adventures mate.
@@livingadamman7994 For sure, the turbo's were the biggest hit and not really something that I've caused through my method of driving or modifications. I thought about AM, but I was extremely time restricted and needed to get back on the road, unfortunately. Thanks mate 👍
Glad to see the comments here are so supportive. I appreciate your honesty and found this video very interesting. I own a 2008 2uzfe and love it however, I love learning about what can go wrong with most things Toyota. To be fair, it seems as if your cruiser does more than just your average weekend away which is awesome to see. I'm curious, what were you thinking of upgrading to? and why did you stick with your current 200? Great video, thank you! Best, Sam.
Thanks mate, I uploaded this to help others and it seems to have done this somewhat 👍 We looked at a couple of options, Ram's and Patrols however the cruiser really is one of the best options. Its a manufacturer that everyone stocks parts for and a wheelbase that is perfect for a multitude of terrains 👍
Your glass half full outlook is great! I feel theres so much incompetence out there when looking for other people to work on your vehicle. It absolutely inflames me when I have to fork out extra to fix something that was recently replaced or supposedly fixed and its made me very cynical.
On the diff and transmission 'thing' - if there are no slip codes you don't need to replace those fluids. That said, delay transmission fluids if there are slip codes - that's a rebuild, but you can keep going for a while. The most expensive mistake overlanders make is to "replace all fluids". Garages love that theme. If you want to do a lap, don't do 500Km a day, do 200Km hops or even go down to 50Km hops.
Mate, Sports mode on your transmission is your friend when towing heavy loads up and down steep inclines. I too, have a Stocklock fitted, but I use Sports mode in 2nd or 3rd gear, keeping the revs up. This also have the benefit of keeping the transmission oil below 100C (no additional cooler fitted) Keep the shiny side up....
Absolutely mate. The water was 100% the reason for all 3 starter motors on the cruisers in the Pilbara and my electrical issues This being said, along with the repairs I had my electrical system redesigned so it’s much less likely to reoccur 👍
@@WhatMACHI Hey mate, the starter motor in these Toyota are mounted in a particular vulnerable location that can cause issues with high water crossings. Most vehicle wouldn't have issues quite like this. 👍
@@dalesulzberger3443 For sure mate, agree with you there. Yes, the extra cooler has made a big and positive difference and would have definitely done it sooner given my time over 👍
👍👍. How many km’s on the rig? How many km’s before the first set of cv’s were changed? Have done a rig review? That $19k is on top of the mods u guys have done on the lc200. Now couple of well. Stupid questions. Have u extended your breathers? So u don’t get water in your transmission again.. do u still run factory air box ? Do u run a snorkel sock ?
Hey mate, this is a 2014 with 165,000 kms. The first drivers CV was changed at about 120,000 and this was damaged caused by a 4WD'ing obstacle at my local park. We haven't extended the breathers yet, but it's on the list but saying that I'm hoping not to traverse crossing like that again. @@XploringOz. Cheers. Just check how high the all are at the moment tho. U just don’t need the expense of replacing those items. Especially that transmission.. I hope they did a flush before they just put new filter and transmission oil straight in.? I think they are rather low.
Bloody ripper, I totally agree Nathan, however I'm sure my missus would bleat about endlessly. I have been thinking about adding the oil cooler you talked of but was wondering if you had noticed any impact on the cooling to the radiator due to having additional obstruction in front of it? Great video and well done for staying the course.
Thanks mate, appreciate that 👍 I haven't noticed any deviance in the coolant temps, however it has definitely made a positive change to the trans temps. I would have definitely fitted one earlier given my time over. Thanks again mate 👍
Hey mate, the main issue I had was the shunt had corroded badly as it was mounted in the engine bay. I replaced this unit and moved it into the vehicle where it's now protected. No issues at this stage 🤞 What kind of issues are you having?
@@XploringOz I have the IP65 version under bonnet with my itechworld lithium. Its just been giving me some eratic readings and trend graphs through the app that go weird and I cant be sure if the problem is the shunt, the app or the battery (unlikely)

@Farque Knows Where I dont think so, it doesnt get hot were its located and it has the same discrepancies even when charging overnight in the shed. Ive come to the conclusion that Victron makes great hardware but absolutely shit software 😕
I have to say I like your honesty. As a mechanic in the trade I agree 100% that all vehicles have their issues. As a previous owner of a LC200 they certainly aren’t the so called unbreakable vehicle the die hards make them out to be. Since the 200 I’ve owned a Y62 and now a LC300. They all need maintenance and at the end of the day it just comes down to the luck of the draw and of course what and how they are used. Yours is one that has certainly be used for its intended purpose. Enjoy your travels and be safe.
Thanks mate, I appreciate that comment 👍 I certainly have used this for it’s purpose and I’m happy with the overall performance. I love this vehicle and good to not have to part with it anytime soon 🤞 I hope you guys also experience trouble free travelling.
@@XploringOz Thanks also. We recently returned back home to Vic from WA with no issues. I feel for you guys when it comes to mechanical repairs. @@TriNguyen-qq5ul Hey mate, can't say that I'm overly familiar with those engines, but sometimes cold rattles can also point to injectors. Could be worth having a look at these on a diagnostic tool too 👍

You're right mate, no vehical is perfect and when it rains it seems to pour. I have a 2015 bt50 and done the big lap once and the cape twice.... thankfully the only thing to go wrong is the alternator blew at 315k km... I am thinking of getting a new car soon just so I get a new car warranty as the Mazda is getting a little long in the tooth and it's only a matter of time before the worst could happen.... just remember mate you can always make more money so don't let this get ya down . Happy travelling
Hey mate, so because of the corrosion it was effecting the total negative terminal and interrupting the entire circuit, therefore reducing the circuits reliability until they finally stopped altogether.
Hey mate, I'm just wondering how many kms do you have on the 200? I had the passenger side turbo on my 200 fail at 147,000kms. The car had a 5 year warranty 150,000km but was already 5.5 years old and Toyota wouldn't cover it at all even though they knew about the turbo dusting problems they are having. Good luck with your trip and fingers crossed you've sorted all the problems out now.
Hey mate, so this is a 2014 with 165000, so sounds very similar to your situation. Sorry to hear that it wasn’t covered, it’s not good enough by Toyota. Here’s hoping the worst is over for me now 🤞
Hi Troops, I would have pushed it with Toyota. 5 months out of warranty is crap. Under Australian consumer law a product must be fit for purpose. I would suggest a 200 series cost you heaps of cash and you would reasonably expect an unbreakable Toyota turbo to last longer. Cost vs product. 2 dollar pen lasts 4 months ok. 200 series new 90 to130 $ a turbo which is not a normal wear item like brake pads, tyres, belts etc. The motor and all the parts associated with it should do a couple of hundred thousand kays minimum. Toyota are bastards in this regard read DPF on 2.8 Hiluxes, Prados etc. They are being fined millions and class action lawsuits are going after them for hundreds of millions. Next time this happens tell whoever for whatever you buy you goods must be fit for purpose. 155kay for a turbo is not fit for purpose.
Glad to see that you made it to Charleville Nathan , we were at the same CMCA park earlier this week. We were in the ever reliable TD42TI Patrol with a Kedron caravan.
Awesome mate, yes we saw you guys setup. Great little combination you have there, looks fully equip and ready to hit the tracks 👍 All the best with your travels
@@Dazza-u4c Should of mate, haha yes the new tow arrived a few days ago and the kids are loving it 😆 (and me a little too much too 😂) Where are you guys heading to from there?

Good vid lad. Something I seem to hear around the places are strange issues when you tune Toyota autos. The 200 is just not a tough or bush proof as a 100-105 but yes they are way nicer.
Cheers mate, don't get me wrong, still a very capable vehicle but I would agree, not as reliable as my old 105 series, that's for sure. But very different vehicle.
If you're travelling around Australia, you're naturally going to rack up the kms, get stone chips, wear out parts and need services more regularly. Driving your 4WD in water so deep it's up near the windscreen is naturally going to cause electrical problems. Also, because the turbo, running gear and so forth is running hot, as soon as the water hits it, it suffers from rapid thermal stresses and this causes problems. Impressive river crossing though. I don't think many modern 4WDs could get that deep without issues.
For what it is worth, nearly half was because of the dusting of the turbos. That is Toyota’s fault and the fact that they essentially use the same flawed air cleaner system on all of their 4wds is terrible. But fix that issue by replacing the air cleaner system, most everything else falls into the categories or regular maintainence and wear related repairs, or after market accessories giving problems. All up, not too bad given the job the car is doing. I realise that doesn’t make paying for the repairs all in one year feel any better. I will be putting the Donaldson powercore filter on mine before the next trip into the outback though.
I agree, the vehicle has performed well given what I have put it through really. I too have already fitted the Donaldon XLC200K unit and very happy with its performance 👍
OMG ! Dealers know how to gouge car owners. My Prado is almost 20 years old, i spent very little on it. But I just use it as a daily run-about. I would never take my Prado to a Toyota dealer, find someone you trust. OR .. OR .. do the work yourself ! save $$$$$
To be honest, the dealer prices were competitive with outside service agents, but yes, when we are back at home some maintenance tasks can be completed by me to save some coin 👍
I’m currently doing a lap as well and had to get my timing belt replaced in Perth. I was pleasantly surprised to find that City Toyota were the cheapest and could fit it in much quicker than the ‘reputable’ shops.
Given the work she does I don’t think it’s too bad. You could save some money by doing some of the servicing yourself but that depends on what your own time is worth. Thanks for sharing.
I agree with you there mate, it has performed well given the conditions. Yes, this is very true and thanks for commenting in a respectful and understanding manner, it appears that many have forgotten how to do this these days 🙏
Can you let me know how the trans tune caused issues with the engine? Surely just holding gear shouldn't affect the engine, unless the tune was not correct for towing?
That correct, the tune hasn't taken into consideration these circumstances and the ECU's aren't cooperating together as they should. I mean obviously the trans should down shift in those high load circumstances, but the trans tune is ignoring these commands.
Most travelers wouldn't be able to afford to keep forking out so much money on so many repairs. Hopefully your woes with this vehicle don't keep going. It really highlights just how unreliable a vehicle can become, when fitted with "certain" aftermarket parts. I personally prefer to leave a vehicle basically stock standard and the less electronic gadgets the better. Same goes for turbos, they are more trouble than they are worth. A normally aspirated motor is under less stress and is infinitely more reliable and less costly to run and maintain. Best of luck for the rest of your trip, you certainly deserve it. 👍👍
Good to be honest and realistic with yourself and YT followers. But you know what, just smile and wave and enjoy the country 😊 (wallet permitting) Your comments onwards from 13:55 are spot on as well. We're just about to hit the east coast for 8 weeks as a young family and as much as I know there'll be hiccups, it's the memories and experiences that are more valuable. Cheers 🍻
Cheers mate, here's hoping that others don't experience the number and severity of issues I've had 🤦♂️ Awesome mate, I hope you and the family have an awesome trip, I'm sure you will 👍
25 years ago an engineer off roading guy who had a Patrol and camping trailer (fold out type with top becomes the entrance floor) said when he gets to water he looks around, and works out how to turn around! My criticism is that you have a heavy 3.2 tonne van, and it seems to me it should provide everything you need. Adding all that gear on your truck doesn't do it any favours IMO. I reckon if one cannot travel light (and I mean not over the manufacture's intended GVM which is tough with kids in a 200 series) then you are presuming the vehicle is as good as new. I was thinking that the best 4WD trucks with all your stuff would be an Izuzu real truck ... but they only have one truck floating seat. Plus only 430 NM despite an over 5 litre turbo diesel. I'm guessing there is no free lunch. I'm also thinking for our coming lap (myself and my wife and we are retired) I may leave my D4 at home (so far reliable) and buy a new LC. Keep it under-stressed (towing 2,450 van) and the only extra for the tug would be air springs to level the LC. I cannot see how any 4 cylinder diesel towing 2.5 tonne can be understressed. That leaves a narrow field of alternatives. Not sure the big utes F150 RAM Tundra etc would have easy repairs either. And the positive side to your repairs is that there are lots around who are familiar with the 200. And that no new motors or gearboxes have been required! At least it was possible to get things fixed! An overloaded and hard worked 200 may not be perfect, but at least its serviceable!!! Good luck!!
Holy shit. Thats almost half our entire budget for our half lap. Cant put a price on the experience and no matter what you drive there are going to be some unforeseen expenses. Thanks for the videos , even when times are tough!
Yeah, you could imagine how hard it was to part with this type of money just before and during the early stages of our trip 😢 But, money is money, time is way more valuable.
Thanks for your real world experience. I'm interested in your weights while towing. I have 2019 VX with the Lovell's GVM upgrade which allows 2T on the rear axle. I also have a larger sub tank (70l) and when I connect my 3.4T van and its 340kg ball weight, there's not much freeboard left on the rear axle load.
Cheers mate. Yeah for sure, we are quite literally on the edge with our weights and the same issue, rear axle weight in the cruiser. We can manipulate our weights a little with gear and water between the combination but this is probably a video for a seperate video 👍
Hi Nathan! Wow! Im an auctioneer in the industry and am following your adventures. Im a landcruiser “nut” having owned 40,45,47,60,80,100,200,75, 79 etc. also 4.2 nissan etc. i had the 200 and sold it as i was seeing issues appearing. Went back to a 79 dual cab. Its interesting. Last year Inwas in Newman with a major mining client (valuing their fleet), and i said “no 200 series?” (They had 75 series still, 76,78,79 and prado), he said “no we wont run a 200 or the new 300. Too stressed in this environment where the red dust has a high iron content. We prefer the 4 cyl in the prado as its more reliable.” Infound his comment’s interesting. It was easier to repair the front ends in the prado every 10,000k. All the v8 79s etc had aftermarket airboxes but they dont last like the 6cyl 75. So its a sad state of affairs now. I note that the roumors re 4 cyl 70 series are out and inwondered if toyota have been listening to their major customer… re running gear. Also the 300- i had one as a company car… id hate to donwhat you do in your 200 with a 300. Toyota have lost the plot imo. My 79 dual cab is the last one i will buy.
Ps- sorry for typos. I have “miss world” 1979 fj45 and my son and inare planning the Canning in her with the dual cab as a back up. Tough genuine 100,000km truck
Hey mate, thanks for your info there! I agree with you though and I'm also interested to hear that the mining companies are choosing the smaller capacity engines due to repair and maintenance costs. It makes sense though! The 200 is a very comfortable vehicle, but its certainly not as reliable as my old 105 series or the mighty 80 series 💪 Toyota's hand is forced in these circumstances given the majority of buyers and environmental considerations.
@@XploringOz spot on. The pressure re fuel consumption as well. The 300 was averaging 9.1 litres per hundred. Its very comfortable as was my 200. Ate the miles
@Farque Knows Where the toyotas are still the king. They do try other products but they just cant cope. I think this lack of competition has made toyota slack eg track difference in the 70 series as an example. My new company car is a v6 wildtrack. As a daily driver its very very good. But the build quality isnt as good as toyota and its full of electronics. Happy drive it but not own it. Inwill stick to my 79 dual cab and my miss world 1979 45 series (with a genuine 110,000k 😊)
I'd say the TLDR is don't drive through rivers whenever possible.
Wurthit 1239 100% correct, however such a statement comes only from People with experience gained over many years.
Thanks mate, appreciate that 👍 we can’t complain when we are out here quite literally making life long memories.
Mate you have a great attitude. I'd be curled up in the corner of that happened to me.
Thanks for the real life problems that travellers go through.
Keen up the great work
Haha 😆 some curling was done at certain times.
But it is what it is, how can we complain when we are out here enjoying our best lives 👍
@brianl351 What are you doing wrong to need several hundred tools, a hoist, an on hand mechanic?
These things are bullet proof standard, once the mods start your reliant on good workmanship and when you use it the way you do, your bound to run into issues regardless of brand. Glad you have a good attitude about it.
Yeah man, I agree there. The turbos have been the most fustrating and expensive repair so far, but like you said, I don't use it to drive to Coles.
Awesome thanks mate 👍
This is still genuinely the best vehicle I’ve ever owned and don’t want to have to part with it anytime soon
Awesome, that great to hear mate, I'm glad it can help and others can try and avoid issues like this.
Here's hoping that the worst is behind us now 🤞
Good update, and an honest one at that.
Thanks mate, appreciate it 👍
Yes the mighty TD42 is a great option and great to hear it’s working out for you 👍
Might be time to look at servicing the 200 myself upon return back home
Thats always been my plan precovd. Have a gq td42 but burns a bit of oil.
May I ask how much you spent? Gu td42ti would be fantastic but not keen on spending over 40k
Gotta love the gu patrols. I now have a y62 with the fruit, and it's been a great truck so far. However, I really miss my GU! That truck took me everywhere and was easy to maintain. The simple things are often the best, especially out in the bush 😊
Someone had to do this; too many similar stories remain untold and the fanboys believe their own fairy tales. Great to find an honest owner.
😆 this is true.
Thanks mate 🙏
Yes, everything has a compromise to some extent, us the end we are fortunate to be doing what we are and have the option to hit the harder tracks when we can 👍
I still love this vehicle nonetheless
Its a car not a submarine. No wonder you've had so many issues..
Life is short and we are living it as a family in the best way we can 👍
Good to see you’re still smiling mate , hopefully you are on top of things now and have plain sailing all the way home 👌
Thanks mate, appreciate that. Here's hoping the worst is over with 🤞
Water over the bonnet means definitely above wading depth limits. Snorkel only helps with air intake but doesn’t change the wading depth limit and the potential damage to other parts of the vehicle.
Of course, I'm not denying I've have taken this cruiser through some challenging terrain, but it's not out of the question for a lot of true overlanders. These are definitely things to be aware of
I gasped a little when I saw those water crossing clips! I’m super cautious of river crossings in Africa.
Another informative, honest and enlightening video....well done and thanks again Nathan.
Thanks mate, appreciate that 🙏
So mainly maintenance issues on an almost 10yr old vehicle that has done a heap of off road work, and now tows a heavy van most of the time.Lucky you are not driving some of the other brands.Have a good time, and keep up the great vids.
Yeah, it’s all part of the experience and privilege of travelling this awesome country 👍
Yeah, some others would have caused many many more issues
Hi Nathan,
23:30 pm in Spain…
Nice vid mate!
Very well received your message.
Enjoy your trip with the family
Cheers
Hey Holger 👋
Cheers mate, expensive hobby 🤦♂️
I hope you are keeping well and thanks for watching so late in Spain.
Cheers, Nathan.
Thanks mate, appreciate that 🙏
I agree, they are great vehicles, I think I've just had a whole lot happen in quick succession, but realistically, with where I take my vehicles, I'm not disappointed in it's performance.
Thanks Heath, appreciate that 🙏 In the end, it's just money and nothing can replace the experiences we are encountering.
It has been a rough year on the bank account, but the experiences are so much valuable 👍
Thanks for letting me know and supporting the channel, its great to hear that people are getting value from these videos 🙏
You've got me reconsidering whether I should upgrade from a 1HDFTE 100 series to a 200 or 300 series. 🤔
So far on our lap it's been faultless, touch wood. Great video as always!
I’d stick with what you have..
Thats the only decent engine toyota has ever made, the rest are hot garbage in comparison
Hey mate, I know the 200's are really nice vehicles but I'd too stick with what you have if its still working for you and your needs 👍
Yeah Upgrade for sure....Sell your 100 series to me...please
@@giterdunpete Haha 😆
I really like 200's but my non turbo slow 105 cruiser has had a similar life to yours and it just keeps going without issue. Good on you for sharing.
*chucked a little clip of the Bridle Track bogging in there too* 😆
@@XploringOz hahaha oh yes we definitely noticed 🤣 the kids were excited to see and Nat said “I’m famous now” haha so good
@@XploringFive Haha, YT famous 😆 Still can't believe I got bogged there 🤦♂ And then you just made it look like nothing 😆 Some editing will be required there for that episode lol
@@XploringOz hahaha 😝 well to be totally fair, you did test the waters first so I had a heads up, I think I pressed every button and switch in the cockpit that I could find and did the sign of the cross 🤣🤣
@@XploringFive Hahaha 🤣 Well it looked good going through at the very least 💪
Thank you for a refreshingly honest and complete story, as per usual. Very useful.
Thanks mate, appreciate that 👍
Cheers mate, appreciate your comment 👍
Everyone is a little different and I don’t try to come across disappointed, just want to make others aware of costs in these types of applications.
Thanks mate, for sure. No vehicle is 'designed' for how I've used it, but this has certainly done well considering 👍
Thanks 🙏
One thing is for sure, you are an honest man! Very refreshing, thanks for sharing 😀
Cheers mate, I appreciate that 👍
Comprehensive as always 👍 could listen to your reports all day 👌
Thanks mate, appreciate it. Here's hoping the worst is behind us now 🤞
I'm really glad it hasn't cost you your trip, that's all that matters.
Great video, mate, keeping it all real and open for people to inspect.
Been through all the comments. Enjoyed your replies even more 👍
Tally-ho and onwards you go!
Thanks mate, hopefully some people will understand where my money goes 😂 🤦♂️
Money is disposable, I rather spend it on experiences with the family now while I still can 👍
Holy Shit mate!
Yeah man, our combination is 6.8t, so this was a little nerve-racking 😬
Hopefully we are done with the big ticket items for a little while now 🤞
Awesome man, glad you are happy with your setup, I love how everyone is different and the market can provide us all with the right option for our own personal use and preference 👍
The old "King of the Road" hey? 😳
Sounds like you have had a tough run Nathan, but glad to hear you're philosophical about it.
They have their benefits don't get me wrong, but I love the LC200 and the
short wheelbase 4WD's for the tracks .
Reasonably stock cruisers with a few mods seems to be the way to go
And a lot less stressful.
Cheers and happy travels
Paul
Another brilliant video Nathan.
Like you I am extremely tough on my 200. It doesn’t get driven around on the streets that a day. It is in my garage and that it is on the tracks and typically it is doing the tough tracks.
Having a 3.2 t van on the back as you say things wear faster and quicker.
That’s a lot of money for sure, but your summary at the end is perfect. You cannot put a price on taking your children around Australia.
Thanks mate 👍
We didn’t build our setups for the Coles car park hey?
Wouldn’t change a thing though, memories last forever, money comes and goes!
This confirms what I've held about my 80 series....it will always be less expensive to upkeep over a new vehicle. Especially when you throw in the cost of the new rig itself.
A great attitude you have there re: the money spent vs time with family and the memories you got.
Cheers mate, we wouldn't have it any other way 👍
Sorry to hear about your problems Nathan but don`t let it get you down enjoy your time on the road mate.
Thanks
Thanks mate, really appreciate that 🙏
Appreciate the honesty. No car is perfect, but few say it how it is. Considering how you use your car, think it's holding up well. And no, I'm not a Toyota man.
Hey mate, appreciate the respectful reply. I agree, considering how I've treated this vehicle is has performed well 💪
I hope you had had the compression tested prior to the turbo's Nathan. Often overlooked but 100% critical. You know our thoughts on VDJ dusting issues.
I think your right,I can see another video coming soon about low compression on few cylinders from dusting issues
Yikes. But, you think Eastern AU has hills? We are towing in NZ - real hills - very hard on brakes and transmission. Good luck with the rest of your trip.
Yup, Australian hills are nothing compared to them hills in NZ! Cheers from across the pond!
Haha, I have been over there a couple of times and I understand! We have it good here in Aus, but WA makes a pool table surface look rough 😆
Thanks for the watch mate 👍
I would agree, you are pushing it hard plus towing a heavy van with mods from stock. If what it gives though is joy then as long as you aren’t spending the next 5 years paying off debt, then it is money well spent. Enjoy the travels!
I agree with you there mate, I'm happy with how its performed considering what I put it through 👍
Good honest video mate. Keep up the good work. Hope your family is enjoying the East Coast. Cheers mate
Thanks mate, appreciate that.
We are loving it, headed inland QLD at the moment and there's just so much to see everywhere!
Cheers mate, thanks for that insight. Always learning 👍
I recommend you look for a 80series triple lock 1hd kit it up enjoy the outdoors if u love the 200 seats have them installed in ur 80.

My mate had lot same issues with his cruiser he sold it and bought a v8 petrol patrol and has never had a problem and it uses less fuel when towing his caravan and way cheaper to service
Yeah, there's a reason they are becoming so popular these days. They are a great vehicle, but nothing is perfect. 👍
Intersting. My first thought was how many kays and age on the cruiser, obviously out of warranty ?
Yeah mate, we’ll and truely out of warranty. 2014 with 165000kms

Best,
Sam.
Thanks mate, I uploaded this to help others and it seems to have done this somewhat 👍
We looked at a couple of options, Ram's and Patrols however the cruiser really is one of the best options. Its a manufacturer that everyone stocks parts for and a wheelbase that is perfect for a multitude of terrains 👍
Exactly part of the reason I chose mine! Have fun!@@XploringOz
Your glass half full outlook is great! I feel theres so much incompetence out there when looking for other people to work on your vehicle. It absolutely inflames me when I have to fork out extra to fix something that was recently replaced or supposedly fixed and its made me very cynical.
For sure mate. In the end we have to it all with a pinch of salt 👍
wow, thats incredible....... Great honest vid mate.
Thanks mate, appreciate that 👍
Sorry to hear about the avalanche of issues. Hopefully your bank account can have a rest from repairing the cruiser! Thanks for the content, cheers
Haha, I certainly hope so to 🤞
Thanks mate 👍
This also have the benefit of keeping the transmission oil below 100C (no additional cooler fitted) Keep the shiny side up....
do you think the water crossings are the main culprit for electric issues as well as the alternator ?
Absolutely mate. The water was 100% the reason for all 3 starter motors on the cruisers in the Pilbara and my electrical issues
This being said, along with the repairs I had my electrical system redesigned so it’s much less likely to reoccur 👍
@@XploringOznewbie here. Does that mean anyone doing deep river crossings should expect a high chance of their starters failing?
Good video once again , cars cost money , going off-road cost money , how is the extra trans cooler going has it made much of a difference?

Hey mate, this is a 2014 with 165,000 kms.
The first drivers CV was changed at about 120,000 and this was damaged caused by a 4WD'ing obstacle at my local park.

What happened with the Victron Smart Shunt? Trying to see how that affected your wider electrical system? Thanks from South Africa.
Hey mate, so because of the corrosion it was effecting the total negative terminal and interrupting the entire circuit, therefore reducing the circuits reliability until they finally stopped altogether.
What would you have done differently? Wondering why the shunt led to corrosion...@@XploringOz

What are key differences for you between the 105 and the 209?
I have a 2012 200series the only issue I’ve had since new is an alternator replacement. Have you modified your vehicle from standard?
Yes, I have modified 👍
Well said
Wheel bearings next, then water pump and belts.
Ahh, there's alway something with any make and model 👍
@@tbmich1976 Yeah, I can share your experience there 👍
Given the work she does I don’t think it’s too bad.
How can we protect the electrical and ECU, when doing water crossing?
But you know what, just smile and wave and enjoy the country 😊 (wallet permitting)
Your comments onwards from 13:55 are spot on as well. We're just about to hit the east coast for 8 weeks as a young family and as much as I know there'll be hiccups, it's the memories and experiences that are more valuable. Cheers 🍻
Cheers mate, here's hoping that others don't experience the number and severity of issues I've had 🤦♂️
Awesome mate, I hope you and the family have an awesome trip, I'm sure you will 👍
Have you had that setup over a weighbrifge?
Yeah we have. I've done a video on the cruiser alone but yet to report back with my weights as a combination at this point 👍
Good luck!!
FMD, I thought my 3rd hand Colorado was exxy. Love your videos, your honesty and detail.
