Do you experience throat tension when speaking? Do you have vocal tension dysphonia? Does vocal tension prevent you from living your life? Often, vocal tension release exercises, like straw exercises bring only temporary relief. Other vocal tension exercises may not target the cause of your tension. In this video, I share 3 tips on how to reduce vocal tension. Make sure to address these three areas when dealing with muscle tension dysphonia or other muscle-tension related voice issues. Relieve vocal tension and vocal strain by optimizing these three areas. Don't underestimate voice and emotions. It may be the cause of your vocal cord tension.

There is no one exercise to solve vocal nodules. It may take some time and it is important to be consistent in your efforts. For vocal nodules, the most important part is to decrease vocal effort and time of voice use to give your voice a chance to heal. Then, learn how to use your voice in a more sustainable way. There are a lot of exercises for this. Most used are so called SOVT exercises (you can google them) and resonance exercises (like hum). If you have any concerns, speak to your voice therapist so you have realistic expectations.

Hi Katarina! I am a speech-language pathologist and professional singer, and have a Ph.D. in Voice Science and two master's degrees (one in vocal performance and one in speech-language pathology). I use your videos as supplemental resources for my patients and/or occasionally voice students (singers) who have voice disorders. Thank you for creating and sharing them. :-)

Hi Katarina, your videos are great! Thank you. I often feel tension when speaking. But the main discomfort I feel somewhere on the transition between soft and hard palate. I feel it when speaking or after speaking. Do you have any advice?

I am not sure ... but I suggest that you play around with some gentle sounds (SOVTs) and see if you can produce sounds without that feeling of discomfort. Then, you can take it from there to a speaking voice.

If you are experiencing hoarseness of voice, I suggest that you have your voice evaluated by a laryngologist. They will suggest appropriate solutions for your specific problem.
