      Don't forget to tell everyone that muscle tension dysphonia patients are not allowed. That's what you told me.

    Hi Katarina,
    My mother was diagnosed with Functional Dysphonia. I am helping her with "Straw exercises" and some meditation in between the exercises.
    We're not seeing any change, do you think the straw size might be the issue?

    • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  10 місяців тому

      Straw exercises are not magical. Yes, the problem can be the size of the straw. But maybe she needs a different exercise. Functional dysphonia is a very general term and does not say much about the details of the problem. I suggest that you consult a voice therapist who can assess if a straw exercise is the right exercise for your mom, or if something else should be done.

    Thanks. Very interesting. I am still at number one I think with the cronic laryngitis...and far away from any language therapy possibility in Mozambique. Depression , too. I got scared understanding how far away from the goal of speaking Iam.

      I definitely did not want to scare you! Learning about all the options and expectations is also a part of the healing journey so don't be so hard on yourself. You left this message 3 months ago so i hope you are doing better and are closer to your goal.

    That’s what I have but I keep getting sick ( I work in a preschool) and have a never ending cough. I’ve felt very discouraged but I continue to do my raspberries trills, vocal massage, massaging my tonight. I do the straw technique with module piano progression.

      I hear you. I have many friends who work with little kids and get sick all the time. Coughing can do a number on the voice. There is nothing extra you can do - follow your doctor's advice on how to deal with the acute sickness and suppress the cough as much as you can (doctors can prescribe medication for that). Then, hydration, steaming and some light vocal exercises once you are over the worst part of the acute sickness.

      No, nodules are not painful. Your sensation of pain is due to something else. It can be also affected by your worries about your voice.

    Well, I have learned elements of each milestone, but if I'm honest, I'd want to start at the beginning, and that's what I'm going to have to do. I had speech therapy following surgery in 2003, and with diligent practice, I got my speaking voice back (but I cannot sing any longer). Over time, I have had an increase in my existing pain level overall, and I am sure that's why my voice has no stamina any more. It's quite rare that I get a day with a good voice now, and yet I used to earn a comfortable living with my voice before the surgery. This video is a reminder to me to get back to basics and work on things like sleep and diet and movement, even before I start practising any vocal exercises or breath work. Thank you, Katarina, that is very helpful.

      I am glad you found it helpful. Sorry to hear that your voice is not what it used to be. Regarding the pain, also check my other videos on this topic because that is a completely different beast to tame. It requires different type of exercise, not physical but more in the realm of mind work.

    Number 3 milestone

    • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  Рік тому

      Milestone #3 can take a long time and often requires help of a professional. Follow instructions from your therapist. Or if you are stuck, talk to your therapist to brainstorm solutions.
