Yea - seriously next level. I can't even imagine that nearly 3 hour continuous ride. We've admired his reviews for quite some time - a real thrill to meet him in person. Thanks for checking out the video Bill. Best, Tim
This is the best discussion on foiling technique & training in the tuberverse. Can't wait to share with Pirate King James. We've been looking for this sort of thing.
You, Jonny and Oscar are the reason I have a foil addiction. Love the challenge! Learned to dockstart now goal is to beach start and more prone foil. Thanks for the motivation
Great information and video. Two of my favorite previous pumping videos were the "Half Life -- How to Pump a Hydrofoil" and "Oskar Foil -- How to Pump a Hydrofoil Longer and Further". Glad you guys met up to discuss. I know Oskar likes the 85cm mast but what front wings and tail wings do you like when prone foil surfing. And what length fuselage do you prefer? I have the Armstrong Wing Surf 4'5" (34L) -- but which Armstrong board is that in the video and what are it's dimensions and weight? Thanks!
Hi H H. Prone foil setup depends upon where you are in your progression. Starter: HS1550V2, 60cm fuse, 232 tail, 72cm mast -- good setup Mid: CF1600 50cm fuse, V200 tail, 72cm mast - playfull, fun, predictable Advanced: HA925, 50cm fuse, V200 tail, 72cm mast - ripping! (you can replace HA925 w/ CF900; replace V200 HA195 tail) We use the longer mast 85cm for wing foil and tow in on larger waves. Hope that helps. The board in the video is the upcoming WKT board (Wake, Kite, Tow) Cheers, Tim
Hi Ken -- I'll let Oskar reply but he rides a lot of different gear down there in Australia mostly matched to the conditions. When he set the world record - it was on Armstrong. I believe a HA1325 but I'll let him comment. Thanks for checking out the video - please subscribe to the channel. Best, tim
@@HALFLIFEVIDEO Hi Tim ! Already subscribed! watch all your videos! We live on the central coast of Cali... if you're ever here please reach out and will show you around....I wing with my wife "who is ripping on the wing but has yet to try Sup or surf foiling, we will be in La Ventana most of the winter so if you make it down there please look us up!
Nice tips, good job! I just want to ask advice. On pumping technique, will taller people benefit due to longer legs and limbs and leverage, especially on generating and creating speed in ride? Is it an advantage being a tall foil rider?
No - not really. Oskar is ~5'7" and he is a pumping phenom. Sky Rama is ~6'3" and he pumps well. It's all about rhythm and technique. Less to do about height. Now....body weight to strength/technique ratio is a real thing. I've seen heavier guys pump well but it's just moving more through the water. As if we need another reason to lay off the beers :-).
Coming off the back of the wave to pump back out. Pushing my front foot down feels like I'm pushing a brick down, won't go and kicks back up and me off after a couple of pumps. I'm fine on the wave just can't get the foil to behave going back out. Any ideas?
there's a hole on the back side of the wave. Exit with max speed -- wide arc -- pause at the top of the wave back for glide -- then stay high in the water column.
For the record run I believe he was on the HA1325. Connecting waves depends a bit on the waves you're in, rider weight etc. Whatever you pump the best is the answer - not trying to be snarky....a setup such as CF1600 50cm fuse V200 tail is fantastic for reconnects. OR replace CF1600 w/ HS1550V2 --- the CF1600 has a slower stall speed and replatforms better; the HS1550V2 is faster. Regardless of choice - the exit off the wave is the most important part of setting up for reconnect. Hope that helps. Tim
I think some guys play piano, guitar etc in perfect timing/tune with the rest of the orchestra. They don't skip a note. It's perhaps his case, Sky Rama and some others, but instead of using hands and fingers it's their legs. Can an averge Joe play guitar? That's why I don't think if I buy a new Armstrong Ultra Super HA "Guitar" will improve my pumping, but I might look cool at the beach as I give excuses like it's too mushy, I like when it's jacking up etc
Well Claudio -- while the average Joe can't play guitar with an orchestra...he certainly can play guitar and entertain himself. Now would a Martin help him sound better than a beater from the pawn shop....only after he/she learned a couple chords. Foiling for better or worse is a bit of a world of have and have nots -- the top brands - Armstrong, Axis, Lift, Unifoil (I'll let others add here) do simply perform better than the entry level brands. Gear will NOT enable you to pump - you will - but it's easier with better gear. Look cool on the beach and pump better as well :-) Cheers and thanks for the fun comment. The Half-Life Crew
I think one thing that is often over looked or not talked about as much is… the rider’s weight vs. foil size. If you’re not matched to the right size foil you’re going to be frustrated and will not progress. Ask me how I know:(
Hey John -- how do you know Lol :-) Yep - picking the right foil is KEY. That said - once you get proficient you have a LOT more leeway in terms of foil sizes. Take @sky.rama for example -- big buy 6'2" ~200lb and he can pump pretty much anything. Best, Tim
The foil community is so keen on sharing info and growing! Love it!
For sure - it's so addictive that once you get the feel, you just have to share it.

Oskar is a legend and a super cool guy.
Agreed and agreed! It was an absolute blast to meet him. Very stoke he traveled from AUS for the AWSI.

Glad it was useful for you -- time to train!
Great video, cool seeing foil discussion between Australian 🌏 prone boarder and US 🌎 wake foiler. Loved Midnight Oil crack at the end 👍
And...don't forget the Maui Wing Foiler - Cash Berzolla :-) Thanks for checking out the video.

That's so awesome Scott. Let us know how the beach starts go. Thanks for sharing the stoke!

Love the cross training part… & the feet distance advice
Right? But man.....he's sprinting 1/2 mile in his 'go' portion -- no wonder he can pump so long.
Cheers,
Tim
big up, this video must go in the books.
Thank you brutha! Those electric skateboards you're building look pretty bad ass!
OS KA JO HANN SON !!!!!!!!!!!!! Legend!
A legend indeed - remarkably long rides and a super nice guy to boot.
Cheers,
Tim
I thought there was more hydrostatic pressure as you go deeper into the water so why is the foil more efficient closer to the surface?
Less drag. Less material to go through the water.
Have fun and get out there and pump!

AWESOME!!! Thanks Oskar!!!!

What size and model wings is Oskar using. Which set ups are optimal for connecting waves. Also, what is the technique for projecting forward.
For the record run I believe he was on the HA1325.

If you compare tall (6'0) and short(5'0) who can generate more speed?
Hi Jon -- irrelevant. It's all about technique. Oskar and Sky are ~9" difference in height. I'd put them at a dead heat on speed.
thanks!
You bet -- big time insights right?
legend !
Yea - pretty much. Oskar is an absolute pumping animal!

Got it.
