How to pump a hydrofoil longer and further

- Some of the tricks and tips I've learnt to improve pumping a hydrofoil in the surf.
1. Keep the board as level as possible on the down pump
2. Stay up high on the mast, top 1/3
3. Narrow your stance, bring the front foot back to work your front quad
4. Arm swing to keep your upper body in rythm and reduce instability
5. Bonus tip: extend up high onto your toes on your back leg, gives you a little extra spring but is taxing on the calf
Riding:
85cm V2 mast
60cm A+ fuse
Custom 13" tail wing
0.5 degree pro shim
HA1125 front wing
Board 4'0" x 19 3/4" x 2 7/8" (27 ish litres) - Спорт
What a great video. The tips are great and helpful, but really? 6:00 pumping, riding waves, pumping and talking through all the tips. That is phenomenal. Looking forward to more videos on this channel 🤙👍🤘
Cheers mate! Will keep the videos coming
The RADDEST instructional video I have EVER seen......of ANY kind! Mahalo nui!
Thanks brother, I appreciate that!!
This vid is one giant low-key flex. And I say that in the most complimentary and envious manner possible. Legend!
Haha who’s says you can flex while trying to help people... 😉
Brilliant! All great tips Thanks for posting
Amazing. The content, presentation and skills demonstrated are superb.
Awesome. There are thousands of folks missing out on your wizardry. If this doesn’t bring them in I don’t know what will. Thanks!
Kind words mate, thanks! Hopefully it helps some people out, if not maybe it was entertaining haha
@@OskarJohansson1 hello thank you so very much for the video , please I hope you dont mind me asking what is the small back wing you are using thank you 🙏
@@markdurbano3758 No worries! The tail wing is one I made myself from a sheet of G10. It is a replica of the KD Maui 12" wing but thinned down to 5.5mm.
One of the best pumping tutorial videos I’ve seen keep them coming 🤙🏼
Wow Mate! I had a hard time wrapping my head around you content juxtaposed to your wave count. Pretty awesome efficiency in pumping. Perfectly explained.
You are a pumping machine ! Tank's for tips now i can try to optimize my pumping like you ... ;)
This is SO fun to watch and very helpful. Thanks Oskar! :)
Inspiring to watch!! I have watched this video over and over! So impressed by your ability to talk and pump, carve, and glide. Thanks for sharing the tips and the stoke!
Even though I'm a wing foiler, this is the best pumping video for learning the principals that hold true for my sport as well as yours. Thanks so much! I'm featuring this video in a list on my @wingcoachdavid channel now!
amazing footage
Thanks for the tips bradda!!
Love the content you’re putting through mate, great stuff 👌
Thanks guys!
Another amazing video. So impressive. Thanks for the tips!
Thanks Greg!
The masses don’t deserve this content. Is there more?
Haha there’s always more learn, I’ll make sure to share as I do!
Yeww this is so good!! Great.tips, riding and killer footage!
Thanks mate! Hope they help
Very cool video!
Great video! inspiring and incredibly helpful! Cheers brother!
Thanks Mark! Hope something in there helps
Love it. Thanks for the info.
Epic! 3 in one, talking, foiling and surfing
Thanks for the info!
Great tips. Thanks! Your skill is awesome!!!
Thanks Michael!
probably the best 'how to' vid out there
Appreaciate it mate!
Still practicing. I usually get it going for about 15 sec or two waves back to back but burn out very quickly. For reference i am 6’0 180lbs (80kg) riding the 1250. I recently tried to alternate pumps: a quick flick to bring the board high and a longer deeper one to project forward, but still not working out well enough. I do get my back leg burning so i will definitely try your method.
Good tips,thx!.
thanks a lot! Today I tried to move the back foot forward and then front foot backward after riding a wave and it works!! :)
Epic to hear! It is such a small tip but really helps
Love this!! Really want to see a video on how beginners can learn to foil!!
I've foiled about a year and I've wanted to make a video cause I haven't quite seen many videos that cover it too well. HIs style would be perfect for that type of video.
Amazing as always!!
We need a tutorial for the MA1000 😂
Great vid keep em coming
Thanks mate, will do!
A littlle late to this video. Great tips Oskar. Thank you. Kaohi
Thanks Roy! Hopefully something in there helped ;)
Damn. I’m tired just watching you! 😂🤙
Hi Oskar. Really enjoy your videos. Your technique makes the most sense of any ive scene. I am in Canada with rarely enough surf to prone, so I mostly wing and recently started dock starting. After watching other videos I thought you had to really dive the front end down and continue porposing for effective pumping. I was confused that my best efficiency and speed was when i just pumped quicker with less front end drop. Glad I stumbled onto your tutorials so I can focus on practicing what truly works better for me. Just had one question. I have been using a 72cm mast for dockstarts and flat water pumping. Feel I can keep up high easier but maybe that is not correct. I have an 82cm mast also. Would I be best to stick with the 72 or try the 82? I'm 70kg.
Oscar, you're an asset to any foil company to give accurate genuine reviews. Thank you for all your vids. I have the CF V2 1200, been proning 3 months here in Bali LOVING it! - Q - At 68kg should i get an "easier" pumping front wing or persevere on the 1200? Best Damo
I assume all the tips, especially shoulder width stance and unweighting on the 'up stroke' is the same for wingfoiling. Fantastic vid btw. Ever thought of pumping whilst reading a book? That would look pretty neat on camera.
Exactly, it is the same motion when wing foiling.
HAHA Maybe a weekly poetry reading while foiling 🤣🤣
Dear God, Oskar, you pump like a mother finder! And what’s with you not getting out of breath? Young whippersnapper! But it’s really appreciated for all that!
😊😊😊
Haha look maybe I'm just good at hiding how cooked I really am ;)
Nah it's honestly all in that HA1125 wing, can literally pump the thing forever.
sucha great video! ........ I take this opportunity for quick advice ..... riding with hs1125 strapped these small taps on the nose of the board with front foot .....I have difficulty because I feel that the front foot is unloaded so they have no effect ... do you think I have to move the straps backward ?... mast forward? .... canting the mast?.... thank you
I just took a hydrofoil lesson yesterday and wow this sport is insanely hard to balance. Incredibly unstable, he makes it look like standing on a skateboard. Cant imagine being able to run a foil like this right now
We’ve all been there! I struggled for a while before it clicked, but trust me it’s worth the struggle.
Did I hear him say 30 minute runs?!! Next level
It’s all the wing ;)
Incredible video in so many ways.
👊😎🤙
RESPECT!
What's your tip for a drip free lens?
Thanks guys! Just lick it heaps before you get it in the water, and then keep licking whenever you remember.
Ahhh been try that just hoped you had a new improved technique for lens clarity 🤙
Thanks a loft for sharing this video with us. I started foilsurfing 4 years ago; I’m now 57 years old and I’m feeling like a little boy; I live in the south of Brazil 🇧🇷; Santa Catarina State; Florianopolis area. You can see some videos on my channel on UA-cam. I’m using since last year ; Armstrong equipment. Witch front wing are you using on this video? Thanks again. God bless you 🙏🏻🤗
No worries at all! Looks like you've got some great foil waves overe there. I am using the HA1125 in this video (all my equiptment is in the description if you're interested). Its a really fast wing that can ride the smallest of bumps but you've gotta make sure to keep it moving.
Slick video! Nice!
I wing foil with straps and trying to improve my pumping. Interesting that you move your feet between being self powered (pumping) and wave powered (surfing). I'm wondering if my straps are stopping me from getting into a good pumping stance with the wing... Will try strapless and see.
Yeah give strapless a go! If I pump back out with straps I take my back foot out of the strap and stand on top of it so I can move my foot around. On my last pump before turning into a wave I'll put the foot back in. Front foot is too hard to get out while pumping so unfortunatley its stuck there.
amazing coaching video thanks so much for sharing. the camera footage is brilliant. are you using a drone for this and if so, what type? you look like you're holding something in your hand like a remote?
Thanks man! It is actually all filmed with a GoPro Max that I am holding with a pole. The 360 camera removes the pole so it looks like it is floating out in front. Gives an amazing view! I will do a video soon on how I film with this in the water
I noticed that while you were surfing the waves, sometimes you dropped down a fair bit. Was that so you slowed down and didn't outrun the wave? Thanks Oskar!
Just amazing Oskar , what tail are you using .
Cheers. Using one I made, a replica of the 12” KD Maui wing but thinned down to 5.5mm
Have you tried pumping in choppy conditions with lots of water movement? Pumping into channels of choppy rips going back out? My experience is the foil can just give way suddenly and the board slaps the water. This is not because the wing breached.
very nice video bro thank 's
maybe my board is to long 5.9' cause after two wave my back leg is burning as hell and my heart is near to explode and after a good session the next day my back leg is painfull
i gonna try your advice thanx
Thanks mate, hope it helps. Even on a big board you can load up your front foot. I’ve just started trying to SUP foil on a 6’0” 110L board and that same principle of bringing the front foot back still works to load up the front leg. Let us know how you go!
What size board are you using and what is your weight? if you don't mind me asking...
Great video !! What size front and tail wing and fusilage are you using?
In this video I am using a 60cm fuselage with a HA1125 front wing, and I think a custom tail wing I made myself. But if I was to ride a stock tail wing it would be a 180 speed.
Awesome, casually chatting along while pumping away in sunny glassy water... Good advice and motivation, thank you!
I saw the gear specs in the description but what's the brand?
Foil is Armstrong
Do you think the ha925 is too small for extended pumps or wakeboat surfing?
Off topic question, how do you keep the lens soo clean?? 😂
Love your surf! What is the brand of your board?
Thanks! It’s actually a board I made myself. It’s a 4’0” maybe about 26 litres. 🤙
Beautiful! Thanks for the tips!
Is the 1125 your go to for smaller days?
Where’s the spot?
Im switching between the 1125 and 1250 on smaller days. If the waves are breaking I'll tend to jump on the 1250 for turns, but if they're moving fast and not breaking much I'll jump on the 1125. They're really suited to different conditions but both work in the small stuff.
And it’s down on the NSW south coast in Aus. Let me know if you find yourself down this way ;)
@@OskarJohansson1 I agree with this. Very different foils but both great in small stuff. What rear foils do you use?
@@brianjefferys5363 hope this helps. It’s an absolute beast of a wing. Takes a fair bit to workout but really worth spending the time.
@@Phil_Seu_Photography I’m using a tail I made myself, it’s a replica of a KD Maui tail thinned down to 5.5mm. Really good for turning, has a surfy feel, and such little drag.
What camera are you using here man? Thanks for the tips too. 🤙🏼
No worries! I’m using the GoPro Max here. Really fun camera but takes some working out
Lol, half hour runs! Hope to get there someday!
With the direction wings are developing we'll all be there soon! Hope some of these tips help you get closer
Awesome video! Would you recommend this foil for pumping only? Can you dock start it?
Thanks mate! For my weight at 68kg it is a lot of lift so I tend to use it for pumping/riding tiny lumps, but it still turns well and for a heavier rider it could eb a great small wave surf wing. I can dock start it as well though so really can be used for a lot of different disiplines.
Hi, thank you for your quick answer. I have about 70kg and live at a lake, i am looking for foil to, pump around in Flatwater, as far and long as possible, dockstart and surf behind the wakesurfboat. Thank you so much. Have you tried the axis png in 1010/1150?
Hey what board and foil are you using???
Is there a racing for this one??
Little question : is it easier to pump with the mast in front of the board or in the back ? thanks !
There is a lot in that question, but generally it is easier to pump with it further forward. It reduces the swing weight of the board so you can be quicker and more responsive with your pumps.
Hello. He will ask you what kind of kit he will have to buy. I am a complete beginner, I have not tried it yet. I would like if you could tell me the dimensions of the board, front wing, must ... to learn . Best regards, Marko
Hey Marko, it really depends on your weight and your experience with surfing. If you’re a very experienced surfer than you can ride less volume and a smaller board. I ride about 2-5L above my normal short board volume. As for what foil setup, I would use a shorter mast around 70cm, a longer fuse around 60-70cm, and a large front wing with gentle lift. I ride Armstrong and the CFv2 wings are great for learning, smooth early lift and still cal pump. Which size you use is very dependent on your weight. From memory they have a foil size to weight/ability chart on their website.
Wonderfull rides !
85cm is it way harder than using 70cm ?
I dont think its too much harder, I only recently converted to the 85 but not it is almost all I ride. If i was learning it would have been a really difficult mast to ride, but once you get comfortable on a foil the mast length isn't difficult to change between. I still surf the 72 in small surf, but I love the 85 at the moment during winter and for longer period swells!
yoooooooooooooooooooooo my name is Oscar
what did you film this on legend?
This was filmed on a GoPro Max on a 3PV pole
Hi oscar, what go pro you used? Thanks
Hi Ademir, this is the GoPro Max.
half hour runs? I've had two 1/2 runs in my life; one was from eating a bad burrito and the other was from the cops. :) Ive watched this video many times along my foiling journey. Time on the water and practice. there is no "silver bullet". That said, getting good at dock starting changes everything and spikes your learning curve. However, prone foils run small. So get behind your grandmothers Jetski (give her some bingo chips and a ginger cookie) and practice on flat days. Don't be hard on yourself; most of us are forced to ride in shitty local conditions.
Best foils tips I have ever heard!!!
How did you record this?
More efficient high on the mast? How’s the foil more efficient higher? On a wave i get it, but flat water I don’t understand. Water density? Dunno
Less mast drag
Hey mate. What size mast you have on that vid?
Cheers.
In this video I am on the 85cm mast but this was the first time I have ridden with it, I usually ride it with the 72cm. I definitly like it with the 85 but I dont actually own one haha
This would be great, with audio!
Ah, there it is.
Wup, it's gone.
HAHA the audio was absolutly terrible on this one... might have to re-do it now! I have some solutions that I have been working on with my more recent videos that really improves it.
@@OskarJohansson1 I won't stop watching them.
@@bubbahottep8644 HAHA Thanks mate! You gotta keep me honest though ;)
What deck pad do u have on this board?
This is just pads I buy off eBay in 2m lengths. They sell them as “JetSki traction”
It’s possible to dock start with Ha 1125 ?
It is definitley possible, but it isn't the easiest! I have dock started as small as the HA925 but you have to get a good run up
What size foil where you riding in this clip?
This was the HA1125. For me it’s fairly big, but it is so easy to pump and glide around
@@OskarJohansson1 thanks for your reply! Do you prefer the HA 925? I'm considering a foil both kite and prone and tossing up between the MA1000, HA 1125 & HA925. Which of these three do you reckon would tick these two boxes the best?
Wich camera 360are you using
This is the GoPro Max 🤙
@oskar did you say over a half hour run?!!!!
Kahi - I subscribe to your channel. Hopefully I'll make use of your downwinding tips one day, but would be awesome if you did a beginner pumping tutorial (bonus for big guys)! Mahalos!
Is this possible to do even for a 105 to 110 kg guy ?
Absolutley! Check out @oceanpixels on instagram. He is 96kg and can pump for over 1 hour in the surf.
Have you tried Axis PNG1010/1150?
I have, that are a nice easy wing to get into pumping, and especially for heavier riders. In the surf though I struggle to get them up to a fast enough speed to ride faster moving waves, and especially when downwinding. For now I would go the new ART999 from Axis, or the HPS wings.
Thank you so for your answer, this is super helpfull. I struggle finding the right foil for me. I have around 70kg, live around a lake. So iam looking for a good pumping foil, which is most efficient, but should also carve and not to slow to have some fun in the waves. Kind regards, Flo
Where was this two years ago? UA-cam's algorithm is flat-out shite!
🤣🤣🤣
thank you very much
could you give me some suggestions to first try?
may I follow your IG??
No worries! Staying high on the mast was something early on that really helped me. Just getting a feel for that and how it feels when you’re up high.
Yeah of coarse, it’s “oskar_foil” on Instagram.
How on earth are you filming this???
Haha GoPro Max on a pole... such a good angle hey!
Mate, great skills, but how about your cardio!!!?
Haha it’s certainly a challenge trying to pump and talk while your heart rate is through the roof!
how tf is this guy filming
