    Thanks for the video! Best I've found on this by far. I still can't fully understand what the weight transfer looks like. Is the rhythm throwing your weight forward and then back? Do you need more weight on the forward part or the back part to keep the foil up high?

    • @HALFLIFEVIDEO
      @HALFLIFEVIDEO  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you Ethan -- hopefully those drills help you out. Be sure to follow us on Instagram @halflifet.5 to see more around pumping and pumping scenarios.
      The foot movement is really like a skateboard ollie. Ultimately you want your weight going forward and centered over the foil at the same time. The shifting of balance between front/back is to help you maintain speed. It's hard to capture in words - practice on your first wave per the video. If you like, shoot us a video at halflifet.5@gmail.com and we'll take a look. We also do video Zoom lessons for $50/half hour if you want to do a deep dive.

    I am looking at the 5'11 Armstrong SUP + CF2400 for foilsurfing and wingfoil, but will this board be too long to learn pumping? At what length of the board will the nose touch too easily?

    • @HALFLIFEVIDEO
      @HALFLIFEVIDEO  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Sven - you may want to go with an 1850 for wing foil. Regardless of the mix you decide on, we can place the order for you and we would appreciate your business.
      I'm also looking at the 511 for wing foiling and SUP. How much do you weigh?
      You can learn to pump on all sizes of boards, however, I've found it's easiest for folks to learn behind a boat on a board ranging from 3'11" to 5'. That said - when you're on foil winging, there will be natural points of pumping to get through lulls and you'll develop that feel with time on water. Going behind a boat is that fastest way to climb that curve.
      Please email me at halflifet.5@gmail.com and we'll get you dialed on gear and can have a call (if you'd like) to talk about pumping trade offs.

    I notice your setup has the mast well behind the front wing. I have a Futura H2 (Gamma 68) and have the assembly option of ‘A’, the mast pretty well inline with the front wing, or ‘B’, the mast behind the front wing like yours. This changes the position of your feet on the board obviously and wonder what you recommend. I’m on a slingshot WF-2 board. Thanks for your reply and for the great videos!!

    • @HALFLIFEVIDEO
      @HALFLIFEVIDEO  3 роки тому +2

      If you move the mast to the B slot it essentially moves your foil forward providing more lift. Depending upon your weight and foiling experience - that may be the right answer for you. The better the balance - the easier it is to pump.

    Amazing stuff as always guys. You really helped me so much to come a long way in my 1 season of foiling behind my tournament ski boat.
    Now, I'm thinking about buying the Ride Engine Moon Buddy 6' board with the 84 cm Infinity wing on it. Do you guys think this would work for SUP pirating waves of normal sized ski boats? I'm 200 lbs and I'm already a strong paddler.

    • @HALFLIFEVIDEO
      @HALFLIFEVIDEO  3 роки тому +1

      interesting! I'm not sure. a typical wake surf boat will be moving along at 11mph. It can be tough to get up that speed to be able to hold that wave as it passes by. Have you thought about instead -- leveraging your tournament ski boat to 'sling' you into other waves of boats with better wake ballast systems?

    • @carsonking3798
      @carsonking3798 3 роки тому +1

      @@HALFLIFEVIDEO Yes but taking the boat out requires time, fuel and other drivers. I live lakeside and can walk out my door and go for an easy paddle anytime so figuring out a way to tap into boats passing by would be amazing. I already do it on my big SUP but foil would be next level.

    • @HALFLIFEVIDEO
      @HALFLIFEVIDEO  3 роки тому +1

      Got it! Well....it's tough to say. It is so paddler dependent. For example you can see @davekalama paddle into basically anything on most all setups while other people may struggle to do so. If I didn't have any boat power assist and had to dock start OR paddle start - I'd likely look more to a high aspect wing. Give it a try with your 84cm and if it works - then awesome! If it doesn't, I'd try to borrow a buddy's Axis high aspect wing. Those wings are great for flat water which will help you get up on foil, they just aren't as responsive on the wave face.....but you have to get to the wave face before you experience it! I think it's going to be tough on the 84cm but look forward to hearing how it goes for you.

      @HALFLIFEVIDEO  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Kurt - I have no doubt that you're quite the handsome dude! :-)
      Between the two boards above I'd recommend the 411. A shorter board gives you less perceived and real swing weight. So long as you can move your back foot to the leading edge of the mast while having a comfortable stance to pump you'll love it. Depending upon your comfort with the 411 I may even recommend that you try the SKT455. The beauty of these Armstrong boards is their construction with 8 layers of carbon sandwiched and running from the back foot bed to the front. These boards continue to be best of industry in all the riding on various carbon boards we've done. You can't go wrong. That said - I think the 311 could be a bit on the short side for you although I had a rider out on the 311 3 days ago and he loved it (he is skinny - 6'2" - email me and I can send you the video of his ride). email: halflifet.5@gmail.com

    Nice video! Have any suggestions for catching a wave behind a non-ski boat, just a regular outboard?

    • @HALFLIFEVIDEO
      @HALFLIFEVIDEO  4 роки тому +2

      Hi Burke -- For sure. Suggestion 1 - Stay clear of the prop :-)
      All kidding aside - check out this video of us wakefoiling in Alaska: ua-cam.com/video/GLiY5CH5fI4/v-deo.html
      It's behind a small dinghy with an outboard. If you're dealing with a larger boat with an outboard please let us know. Here's our tips:
      1) It's all about the second wake
      2) Play with rope length to get to the steepest part of the wave
      3) Play with your speed from everywhere from 7mph-12mph. Maximize the center (right behind the boat) hump. That will tell you when your 2nd wave is as big as it will get.
      4) Be hyper focused on the back corner of the boat. As with our advice in this video: ua-cam.com/video/pyWJf_3wjD0/v-deo.html Identify the bubble line and use that as your visual guide.
      If this doesn't work, we do Zoom/Facetime lessons for folks outside of the Seattle area. Shoot some video of your attempts, we'll do a face to face call, diagnose what's going on, and get you foiling like a champ.
      What foil are you riding?

    • @perranguy

      @@HALFLIFEVIDEO Thanks for the tips! I am behind a 20 ft Keywest, deep V hull, with a 150 Yamaha. On the Great Lakes, so it is often choppy. Riding a Slingshot Gamma 68cm wing with a 90cm mast.

    • @HALFLIFEVIDEO
      @HALFLIFEVIDEO  4 роки тому +1

      What a cool boat! What is your weight?
      With that boat, 2nd wave riding is going to be tough on the 68cm unless you're quite slight. Even then I'd recommend adding a bigger wing to your quiver. I may adjust this when I hear back on weight but I'd suggest that you add a Hover Glide 84cm to the quiver - OR - go with an Armstrong 1850 for the ultimate small wave machine. We sell them both and can hook you up.
      How is the 90cm mast working for you? Normally I'd suggest starting with a 46cm but if you're good on the 90cm and you're on a small wave, I'd likely recommend the 71cm or 61cm with your 84cm.
      I love the 68cm but typically will ride that on the first wave and rip the second wave with the 84cm.

    • @perranguy
      @perranguy 4 роки тому +1

      @@HALFLIFEVIDEO I am about 165 lbs. I started on the 61cm mast, but I am happy with the extra height of the 90cm keeping me out of the chop. I am wondering what it should feel like inside the wave. I have noticed I can really feel the turbulence on the foil when I am near the wake making it less stable and more twitchy, but it doesn't seem to propel me and slack the line. The bigger wing could make that difference I guess?

    • @HALFLIFEVIDEO
      @HALFLIFEVIDEO  4 роки тому +1

      Yes - for sure. You'll feel a bit of turbulence any time you're in the prop wash or direct 'white' of the wave. Turbulence (or perceived turbulence) goes down the more aggressively you ride the foil so if you're cutting etc you'll feel less of it. Are you currently on a long line going for the second wave? or short line going for the first? Bigger wing will glide better but you'll have to be on the wave (not inside of the wake) to get the push. Make sense?

      We are dealers for Slingshot and Armstrong. While I'd love to sell you one of those foil kits......for a flat water - maybe pump off a floating dock (as opposed to boat or wing), I think I would go with a high aspect Axis. Normally, I love the Armstrong 1850 for pumping and winging but that's with some level of power source. If you don't have a boat to get you going - I'd steer you towards Axis.
      If it turns out you have a boat I'd recommend Slingshot to get going. A 99cm or 84cm in your scenario would be the closest fit.

BTW I'm 6ft 1 at 175 and I only have access to a seadoo wake pro 230. I'm wondering if I just need a bigger front wing.

    • @HALFLIFEVIDEO
      @HALFLIFEVIDEO  3 роки тому +3

      Hi Mark -- While all wings can pump.....some are much easier than others. The 68cm is a bit tough for pumping and stealing waves. It isn't the greatest pumping wing. If you stay in the slingshot family - the 84cm will give you a lot more 'carry' and glide.
      For stealing waves - I'd hold onto the rope and 'sling' yourself into your target wave. With appropriate speed to your glide - you'll get there (do so at your own discretion - it can be dangerous). Assuming you know how to wake foil the 3rd/4th/5th wave you should be fine....however...the 68cm is hard after the 2nd. The 84cm will be easier.
      We prefer the Armstrong Foils for pumping. They retain a wave characteristic (e.g. 1850) but are high aspect inspired so they pump well without giving up too much of the wave feel. You may want to consider a Armstrong setup for the upcoming holidays! We can order/sell you the perfect setup btw (we can also order the 84cm if you decide to stay Slingshot). In all honesty what is the learning curve for flat water hydrofoiling, especially for a town full of men and women who have never surfed or SUP’d, (I being one of them) but are hungry for learning something new and cool? Is it something I could feasibly learn within a year and then teach to others? I think people generally perceive foiling as an expensive, out of reach sport that is nigh impossible to pick up (some comparing it to trying to balance on a bowling ball covered with grease) but if I were able to learn how to do it I bet I could teach others and grow an excitement for it in the resort town I live in and may even be able to start a foil renting business here.

    • @HALFLIFEVIDEO
      @HALFLIFEVIDEO  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Ricky -- well.....I can tell you that I have no chance of standing on a greased bowling ball but I can foil :-)
      It is true - foiling is an expensive sport. You can be a runner for the price of sneakers whereas a decent foil setup is going to run you $2k before you get into what boat is pulling you, fuel, etc. The learning curve varies. I've had folks come out with us who have never wake surfed, wake boarded, or SUP'd before that have progressed well. I've had others that struggled to learn to wake surf. Like anything in life, to get better you need to put the time in. If I wasn't taking into consideration cost, I'd actually put your town onto an eFoil. They are easy to ride and have a relative flat learning curve. You don't need a boat and a flat water lake would be a hoot. Check out our fliteboard video: ua-cam.com/video/9ma5vS_R57k/v-deo.html
      Learning to foil really requires a great boat driver with a lot of foiling knowledge - that will make or break the experience. With a good driver/instructor combination, it's reasonable to assume you'll take flight in your first lesson (with rope in hand). You'll get the chance to drop the rope within your first 5 sessions.
      The good news is that the progression is a TON of fun. It's addictive and once you take flight on a foil, there's no going back.
      Please subscribe to our UA-cam channel if you haven't and follow us on Instagram @halflifet.5
      Let us know if you have any questions. Good luck and definitely bring the foiling stoke to your town!

    I’m about 4-5 months into prone surf foiling- been kiting on the foil for a year before that
    I can surf the foil and kite with it pretty well
    But pumping continues to elude me- I have 5 different Arm wings including the HA 925. And the mid aspect 1550-the V2
    While I can feel the dramatic difference in glide, and I’m gliding longer- it’s not bc I’m improving pumping and it’s all due to the wing
    Am I behind the curve? I don’t have access to a boat- so I only can practice while surfing- at 10-15 waves a session- that’s not a lot of practice
    I guess I could work on it while kiting- but the kite pull confuses the issue a bit
    Do I just suck?
    Is there a wing set up you would recommend for learning? Including tail, fuse and mast?
    I have the 72 cm arm mast with both stock and shorter fuses
    The 225 and stock tail wing and the KD tail wing
    1050, 1200, 1550 original, V2 and the 925 HA
    Any combo you would rec?

      @HALFLIFEVIDEO  2 роки тому

      Hey Bryson,
      You certainly don't suck! You're killing it as a multi-discipline foiler. It takes a bit of work -- we do Zoom lessons. You send us some footage and we break it down for you. I think that's probably the best way to work through this. For prone - the 1550V2 is likely the most forgiving for pumping. Next closest in the HS family would be the 1250. In rib to shoulder waves go 1550V2, 60cm fuse, 232 tail. Exit the wave with speed, stay high, glide, then pump.
      We can talk more through the pump specifics in a zoom lesson. Email us at halflifet.5@gmail.com
      Cheers,
      Tim

    • @HALFLIFEVIDEO
      @HALFLIFEVIDEO  3 роки тому +2

      Ah - got it! There's really no comparison in terms of performance between the Armstrong SKT311 all carbon board and the Slingshot WF-1. When it comes to pumping, gliding, and responsiveness stiffness is a critical attribute as is weight. Armstrong's 8 layer carbon sandwich stringer runs from back footbed to the front providing best in class responsiveness. To date, we haven't been able to match that performance with other boards - carbon or not.
      The one advantage to the WF-1 is a single concave versus the Armstrong double concave but....we're talking a slight advantage that I only noticed upon first ride. I do like the single concave as it grips the foot nicely. We rode and enjoyed the WF-1 and the WF-2 for that matter for a long time with big smiles on our faces. There's a lot of good boards out there and it depends upon the rider preferences. For top performance - the SKT311 stands alone for now for wake foiling.

      It's a ton of fun but if you'd rather stay in the boats wake -- that's always an option. pumping just gives you flexibility to move between waves. hopefully you'll be able to get out there on the water and give it a try.
