This is a fabulous story in it's own right, and a prime example of the maxim "shit happens!" I was thinking while watching that the final term was a gamble, and that in your shoes I would probably have taken the character straight from prison and used the start of the game as the "fresh start". This story does provide some keen incentives to succeed though.
Well, just as a reminder, using the connection rule your character can gain up to 2 additional points in skills. In addition, if the referee uses the skill packages, further skills can be gained before starting the game, that allow your character to adapt to his/her role in the upcoming adventure(s). I agree that this must be one of the most unlucky characters ever to survive character creation in Traveller.
Watching this was great. Seeing how far down the character fell was interesting. However upon rewatching it on the roll to get in your career you rolled a 3 you get +1 for University Graduation and +1 for your high education which gets you a 5. You needed a 5 or more so you should have just squeezed in to your corporate job.
@roberbarbiejr.7121 Your comment sent me back to the revised core rule book to check up on the point you raised. And it turns out you are right! Since the dice roll is Education-based, I should have just scraped in! This poor character never had a chance! Not only were the dice against him, his own player sold him short! Oh well, a good example nonetheless. Meanwhile, I appreciate your correction and kind words.
Come on. A 2 in END? a 3 in STR? OK. Don't be an action hero. But at least be average. 32 total characteristics is 10 points below average. That's hobbled if not disabled.
Great video showcasing the randomness of Traveller creation and how you get a character and not a build. More Traveller!
