Rolemaster Unified Character Generation

An example of character generation using Rolemaster Unified by Iron Crown Enterprises. The video ends with my opinion of this new version of the game I grew up playing. Better safe than sorry! My affiliate links ...

Very nice piece.
Thank you.
G'day Rav. I was enthralled by the drawing process sidebar in the RMU creation video. I'd love to see more of those for your artwork. It triggers some sort of creative desire in my brain.
In that case, I'll do a few more! It's a bit trickier to do timelapse recordings with pieces like this that take a lot longer, but I'll figure it out.
✨️🌠 Fantastic as always!
this is just getting better and better! I can hardly wait!
I am floored. In a good way.
Looks great. Colour-code numbers: a good idea indeed. I like the icons-only as it keeps the chat box tight and more real-estate on the screen for other things. After a couple sessions, the icons would become second-nature. Foundry V12 has introduced the option for manually rolling real dice and entering the numbers. Will this be something that is built upon (aesthetics, auto-highlight without clicking pop-up etc.). I'd like the option where the system could be used as a super-GM screen that handles all the tables and automation if a game just requires a manager, rather than a battle-board.
Rolemaster gains a tremendous benefit from full automation of rolls. You get all the crunch with none of the hassle.
Awesome
lets goooo real excited for this one
Wow! I really enjoyed watching this one!
WOW, so is this official? Are books available again for purchase? Nice art! Loved this spell system. So much better than Vancian Magic!
Yes. These are the official new books. The system will also be officially supported on Foundry. You can see my videos on that as well. Look for Preview of RMU for Foundry.
looks interesting
Bob is the man! This looks amazing, another home run video Rav.
Do you have questions for Bob? Post them here, and I'll be sure to read them out/ ask Bob for you in the next interview.
Wow, solid work man! Looks great. For someone living in a country that uses the metric system the conversion from imperial has always been a disturbance in the flow of the game. The system you've had around you for all your life gets internalized so it translates a number to something visual automatically. Could the choice of system be incorporated into the base settings of the game? (wishful thinking...)
I'll ask this question for you in the next session.
Awesome!
This is a very good start. Nice work. I've been a huge fan of RM since the 80s and still have the first published set. Simple question. RM is very intense with respect to game combat mechanics... what is, and what is not, going to be automated? FGU is quite amazing in this regard.. how will it compare?
Good question. I'll be sure to ask it for you in the next interview, which we hope to do in the next few days.
This is great news! RMU is awesome
Agreed! Hopefully have some new updates soon,
You are my Rolemaster go to guy keep up the great videos. Also, I now have received my fifteen minutes of fame so I can check off that box.
We've been playing RMU since early 2024. Really enjoying it. Looking forward to this.
Did YT copyright strike the intro. or something? It was perfect. I got a strike on some ancient music score from Fox Classics years ago for a silly mashup video I made. A company using AI to scrape music and art, and yet is overzealous in denying others from using bits in an obviously non-monetary video about a hobby. No irony at all there. Nope, none at all...
Good question. They did not copyright strike me. I really like that intro, too, and it hurt to clip it out, but I saw another UA-cam video explaining how easy it is to get a copyright strike, even for using a few seconds of classical music, so I thought better safe than sorry!
Would you like assistance?
Hello! Thanks for your video. I have a question, is the RMU compatible with the module for RM2?
You're welcome. In answer to your question, I'm not sure if I'd use the term compatible. But I would say the two systems, while different, are still very similar and therefore easy to convert RM2 material for RMU. That's my take, I'm interest to hear what others have to say.
Really exciting! ✨️ I have been waiting specifically for a VTT implementation to Foundry. The other VTT's aren't to my liking.
Bob Morris really is dedicated to this project and full of enthusiasm! I'm sure he will turn out a great product!!
Who is the attractive programmer? 😍🥰
Thanks for staying on top of RMU news and passing it along to us, it's greatly appreciated! look forward to seeing more of your creative work!
Thanks for your encouragement. And I definitely will be doing more on Rolemaster.
This is indeed a treat. This made my day: a paid gig no less, so less chance of falling apart. Yay! Scrape, scrape, scrape those tables.
Wish I could have been there to meet you all. I arrived by plane on the Monday after!!
That bikeway looks just like the one by my home.
Of course, Bob - a fellow cyclist. I should have got a shot of my trusty "steed" in the video. Next time!
The last time I played Rolemaster was during the Gulf War in 1991. It was a staple at my table in the 80s - set in Middle Earth obviously. I have no idea why I stopped. Life got in the way I guess. I also had no idea a new version was out. My wallet will not thank you for this video, but I will.
Thanks for your comment on this and on other videos I've posted. Yes, sometimes life gets in the way. I have a similar story. Coming back after a long absence, wondering why I stopped playing in the first place! But, for what it''s worth, I think we've both returned to Rolemaster at a good time. All the core books for the new version have been released, with more on the way. Much to look forward to, and Welcome back!
@@GMRav Thank you, looking forward to it, I have bit the bullet on the Core Law hardcover - for now - and will see how I get on. The Foundry version I will get for sure - I have been using Foundry for all my games and it feels like home. Unfortunately, this does mean I will have to venture in to the dreaded loft! I know I have all my old ICE stuff up there somewhere. Will I return? Wish me luck.
@@michaelsinclair881 Spell-Law is Core-Law's best friend. I played w/o Spell-Law for a few months but.. it's totally worth it!
Great video showcasing the randomness of Traveller creation and how you get a character and not a build. More Traveller!
Great video in a very nice setting.
Keep up the good work 💎
Slight correction, on the +1 bonuses for the 10 favoured, professional skills, the rule is +1 per rank up to +30, not per level.
Great video thanks! I used to play RM way back in the 80s. Mostly RM 2nd ed and RMSS (I ran Spacemaster too). Very tempted to get the currently available RMU PDFS. Even for just a read if I can't find players for it.
You're welcome! Looks like you're in Australia, which will make it hard to join my group when I re-start my game. But you can still find a group or forge a group!
I was always a huge RM fan. i had all the books and loved loved LOVED the character creation. so many classes for players to choose from
Matthew is great. Thanks for doing this!
Well done. Good questions and a charming interview. I hope your fledgling channel finds an appreciative audience, as that is clearly deserved. My recommendation for where to go from the Core Rulebook is: 1 Central Supply Catalogue, 2 High Guard, 3 Traveller Companion. Everything else is up to what you wish to accomplish.
I appreciate that very much; thank you! And you have answered a question I wish I had pressed more in the interview. May I ask, for a referee, which boxed setting module would you recommend to start with?
@@GMRav I actually don't use modules for Traveller. I use it to do particular sandboxes. I have run a chain of modules successfully before but modified them so heavily that they weren't much of the original beyond the idea. I have read The Pirates of Drinax, but chose not to run it. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. My current Traveller game is one in which a luxury passenger liner belonging to the travellers has been hijacked, and they are marooned on a post apocalyptic world bartering for parts to fix a decrepit scout ship. Factional politics between survivors and warbands. Slavers occasionally coming to the system to harvest people, and dealing with the giant insect life on a planet with an excessively high oxygen level. Previous game was Imperial intelligence commandoes. Mostly adapting scenarios from classic fifties and sixties war films like the Guns of Navarrone and Where Eagles Dare. Game before that was revolutionary merpeople fighting against the corporation that had sterilised their species. All on a waterworld. The entire catalogue of adventure and genre is easy to adapt to Traveller. That is why it has been my favourite system since the 80s.
@@talhoyle Thanks for that reply. Your game ideas are fantastic, very creative and cinematic. As for my question, to clarify, rather than modules, what I am asking for is a suggestion not on which scenario module but which setting book to start with, like the Great Rift. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I thought such a book might help me situate the game in the Traveller universe, not being very familiar with it. But I'm not sure which one to go for first. Also, out of interest, which version of the Traveller rules do you use?
@@GMRav Behind the Claw. Mongoose 2E with some Cepheus and Hostile.
Very informative and engaging interview, Rav! Well done. As has been mentioned above, it was heartening to learn of Nicholas’ inspiration for holding things so close to his vest regarding releases of Shadow World product, with his own fandom of I.C.E. Even more, that TKA trusted him with the shepherding of his works into the future. This makes me very enthusiastic that we will see addendums and new releases for that setting and its multitude of fans from the late 80s/90s hand-wringing for “moAr”! Great to have such a moment in time with him; showing he is not a stuffy suit without emotion or a personality but a very down-to-earth demeanour. 7/5 stars. 🥃
Not a stuffy suit but down to earth - yes, well said! It really was very easy and a pleasure to talk to him.
Nick played in my rolemaster campaign while we were both members of the Cambridge Univercity Roleplaing club. Fond memories of a earlier time.
You remind me that a genuine fan of the game has become its custodian rather than it becoming the property of a corporation, something I'm so pleased about.
Nick is probably even more mad about Rolemaster than I am. He bought the company.
There should have a link to this video on the first line of the character creation section of RMU. I recently purchased RMU core law and spell law and they are great. The one flaw in RMU character creation is that they used a lot of pages to describe something that Rav has demonstrated very quickly and simply. To be clear, those pages in RMU character creation are not wasted. They are full of great choices for the player. RMU provides a fantastic amount of material to work with. That said, reading through character creation in RMU will probably take longer than watching this video. Iron Crown Enterprises has always made good games and RMU shows that they are open to making improvements, even after over 40 years. I played the original Rolemaster briefly back in the early 80s and I have not played RMU (at least not yet) but as I read RMU core law I would catch myself thinking, "That's not what I remember but I think it is a good change." Please keep the videos coming Rav! Glad I found your channel. Nice drawings too.
I really appreciate that; thanks. I agree with your assessment of the new RMU and you have inspired me to start thinking about the next RM video!
Fantastic!
Thanks for posting this video, nice to finally see the people you've been working for as a freelancer on and off since 2012.
You're welcome. I think you did the cover art for the new books? It's great to hear from you!
@@GMRav That is correct, I got the honor and task of creating the artwork for the covers for the five core RMU books and a little bit of the interior artwork as well for some of the books. I had hoped to see some photos from Dragonmeet, coming across this video was a lot better than photos, thanks again.
@@RaymondGaustadnes 5 core books? That's intriguing. I know of three: Core Law, Spell Law, and Treasure Law? So what are the other two, if you don't mind me asking? Creature Law 1 & 2, perhaps?
@GMRav Creature Law 1 & 2, ICE is also well underway with Character Companion. A bit unsure which will be published next though out of CL 1 and CC.
@@RaymondGaustadnes I've been thinking about your comment. Let me know if you're interested in talking about your work for ICE. We all love fantasy art and artists! You can reach me via my Discord channel discord.gg/kUMurRrYbn (user name: Ravi) if you're interested. All the best.
Another favorite TTRPG covered! ✨️ Thank you.
To be honest, I wish I had better questions for him! I feel I wasn't prepared enough. I'll do my homework first next time! Perhaps even use the channel to collect a few questions beforehand.
I've never actually seen Mr. Caldwell before. Was interesting to hear future plans, straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak. Honestly, I would have a far more success in getting players together if there was an up-to-date Rolemaster Unified Foundry system extension, aiding in taking care of a lot of the moving parts. I know James at Black Night Unlimited did a great job on the similar mechanics Against The Darkmaster. Just pay the man to do RM properly please. it would be stupendous. He would be my pick to make it happen. Wish Canada cons had Iron Crown make a similar impressive presence.
Just bought all 3 Rolemaster books in hardcover. Thanks for putting these videos up, there just isn't much out there on this wonderful system.
Me, too! I only had the PDFs before. I also picked up the Shadow World Player's guide. It's time I checked it out!
@@GMRav Are the existing Shadow World products compatible with RMU? I got the impression from the video that there is some work that needs to be done.
@@aaronabel4756 I think that's right. I believe he said the RMU variants are coming. I got the intro because I assume it's sufficiently high-level and lore-focused to not matter. Also, I only picked up the PDF.
I just checked - it doesn't seem like it will be a big issue in any case - check out the video at 14:15 for how Nicholas intends to make Shadow World RMU compatible.
Great video, loved the explanations and the drawing!
Fascinating interview, thanks Rav.
Very insightful video. Great questions! ✨️
