Mauka, Makai, Diamond Head and Ewa is the best way to express directions on an island. Your orientation will be different depending on where your starting point is. But if you know where the mountain and ocean are in approximation to where you are, you’ll never get confused. “Town” is residential, shopping, schools, condos, businesses on the Ala Moana side of the island. Salt Lake to Hawaii Kai, loosely. When my relatives in Kailua say they’re coming into town, it could be Makiki, Downtown business district, Waikiki etc. So long as they cross over the Pali tunnel or H-3, they’re coming into “town.” Just discovered your channel. It’s great, succinct and filled with useful information. Keep up the great work!
I’ve lived here 10+ years (all in the Ala Moana area). Everyone I know in Town uses “Downtown” to refer only to the historic/business downtown area around Bishop Street… basically from 'Iolani Palace west. Usually to include Chinatown, possibly Iwilei. The only people I’ve seen refer to Waikiki/Ala Moana/Ward as “downtown” are visitors, military families, and maybe some far Westside or North Shore people who think of any walkable area with city blocks as “downtown”.
downtown= homeless, hookers, old veggies for sale, philipino poor people, ugly buildings. hawaii looks like a desert with building built in the 70s that have 2045 prices
I’m from Pearl City. Lived here all my life. Driving into town starts at Middle Street and ends at UH. I think Punchbowl is part of town, although it is Mauka of H1, so there’s gray area for how inland is Honolulu. But the core of “downtown” is Chinatown to Ala Moana in my opinion. Thanks for a great video!

I just put 500 miles on a rental car, drove the island for a week, checked everywhere, and decided to sign a lease in Hawaii Kai. I love how you guys are pushing for more non hawaii residents to move here. And you guys are absolutely the representation about how all locals feel about more people moving here and making it a great experience for locals. 👏 (sarcasm)
I live in Maunalua. It’s conveniently located & very safe. I moved here nearly 4 years ago and the “new” has worn off. It’s just a place to live to me. I came mostly for the mild winters since I hate the cold, but 3 months of the year, I’m just sweating my tushie off 🥵 Everything is a trade off. The crumbling roads & the lack of products available here are a definite turnoff for me.
That's a small price you pay for living on an Island in the middle of the Ocean. Consider Oahu has way more options than outer islands. Lived here for quite some time now and the only thing I miss is Trader Joes!
@@JD-jp2fw It’s been a huge shift for me. I’m not young anymore. So many things I don’t have access to here without Amazon & I have no intention of making Bezos any richer since he contributes nothing to society. There are just too many things I’ve had to learn to live without & since I came from Florida, the oceans not new to me. People always say “You’re so lucky to live in Hawaii”. Yeah, no. I don’t feel that way. I miss the mainland, but I’m looking into moving to Costa Rico. The climate is better in the Central Valley & beauty abounds!
@@JD-jp2fw Thank you! Not sure I’m up to another big move at my age, but the heat is killing me! Nobody has A/C here & 90 degrees is friggin hot 🥵 I have until June to figure it out if I don’t want to suffer another summer here. Thanks for the well wishes ☺️
I’m born and raised in palolo valley housing. Lived in makiki apartments next to the freeway by the mural, papakolea, maili, waipio, kapolei, Waikiki, wahiawa, mililani, kalihi, salt lake. Island life will get to u eventually. The prices, crime, personality change in friends/family, drugs, etc... miss Oahu but had to chance the mainland life
I've lived on Oahu for over two decades, I've (begrudgingly) been to Honolulu about four times at the request of mainland visitors. I avoid it like the plague.
Yes, It is the underworld/hell. Sinners, heathens, egotistical flesh eaters, if they want to be saved they must stop eating flesh, cow secretions, and sinning. Eat brown rice and beans as a staple.
Oh no. Downtown is Aala Park to Ward Ave. It has China Town, Fort Street, Iolani Palace, the Capitol, and the HPD HQ... and most of the homeless. Town is between Ward and Diamond Head haha.
That's me, I memorize the H1 freeway exits by numbers, like, take Exit 7 for Waikele, etc... much easier to remember for me 😅 Been living in Honolulu for 20+ years and still confused with the direction terms of Mauka & Makai, me thinking, I am standing in the middle of this island, don't see a mountain or ocean, how do I know which way the mountain/ocean is located, in front of me, on my left, on my right??? 🤔🤯☺️
Very nice video ! What is your opinion of buying a condo in an older building specifically Hawaii Kai (considering potential repair costs for older plumbing, elevators, exterior repairs, etc.) versus paying a higher cost or getting a smaller space for a new one in Kakaako? Commuting/traffic is not an issue since I am retired. Thank you
Older build in Hawaii Kai VS Newer build in Kaka'ako? Hmmm... I have a lot more questions now 😬 Not having to consider traffic is nice, but brings up the next question about lifestyle and amenities. Do you have pets? How often do you expect visitors? What regular activities occupy you? How many vehicles will you have? Is proximity to a hospital high up on your "must have" list? Does view matter? How important are community pool/garden/center? Feel free to schedule a free virtual consult with us and we can really fine tune your selection process!
@@movingtohawaii Thanks for your reply ! This would be an extended vacation home occupied maybe 2-4 months out of the year-not rented out, so lower HOA fees is important. Pets: 1 miniature poodle, Visitors: grown kids maybe 2-3 times a year. Activities: beach, pool, walks, hikes. Vehicles: 1 max. Close to hospital: not required. View: Definitely matters, high floor ocean view. Pool: I can see that the newer condos have nicer pools than most of the ones in Hawaii Kai. Lanai: A must.
When I inevitably become homeless I plan to return to Oahu, Honolulu where I was born since at least weather in Hawaii is stable compared to how temperamental mainland has been.
Enjoyed this video and appreciate the explanation of what is downtown and town. Honolulu is similar to Seattle. I live in the Seward Park neighborhood but my address is listed as Seattle. I like the downtown area of Honolulu and find it fairly easy to get around. I'm actually having a hard time trying to nail down where I would like to live in Oahu. Mahalo for the video.
Hi. I recently talked to ?Jason?? In your office about the areas to live but I’m still having a difficult time to nail down specific areas. I imagine I’ll need to take a trip to Oahu just to go tour different areas to get to feel the vibe in the interested areas. Hawaii Kai is of interest but the home prices are probably out of my reach. Anyway, the video was spot on and the similarities between Seattle and Honolulu could make moving easier to acclimate. I’ll keep watching the videos you folks release. Mahalo!!
I like your introduction to Honolulu. But you did not cover Makiki 96822. The area has the best price, best access, and lowest price rentals in Honolulu.
I wish my wonderful wife and I could live there. She’s an amazing middle school teacher. The pay is just way too low to make sense of living there :( We are super mellow, love nature and ocean, felt right in Honolulu. But easing 2 kids on 25% less in a much more expensive place? Ugh 😣
I live in downtown Honolulu in the condo wats crazy I have to pay to park but lol good thing I can walk across the street to jack in the box lol but I have a good view of the ocean
As a resident of Hawaii, best advice I can give is not to move to Hawaii. Edit : Oh, but it's so pretty! Yeah, my 100 sq ft studio? That's a thousand before utilities. How deep are your pockets? Granted, I am a 10 minute walk from Waikiki, but there's a lot going against it. And I appreciate you saying that : Hawaii is like 1950s personality with a touch of modern day. And "town" never started for me until Derussy. Everything outside of that parking spot was out. We channeled into Waikiki. That was "downtown".
OTS bus drivers will say everything thing from pearl city to Ala Moana is Town. Downtown is the central business district from like Iwilei Chinatown to Alapai st. Kakaako is kakaako and Waikiki is always Waikiki. Tourists call Waikiki downtown cause they tourists go figga.
So you’re bringing home about 12k a month less 401k, so should be 10k a month roughly. (I make 225k in Hawaii and those are my numbers after taxes). Assuming you have two cars, at least one paid for. No more than $500 a month for the other. Food for 5 likely $1200. Cell phones probably $250. Car Insurance and gas $500. Misc things like a few dinners out, clothes, etc. $800. That leaves you $6750 for your mortgage and taxes and savings. Should easily be able to swing that. A 4 bedroom house you likely won’t be able to afford in Honolulu at that income. So you’ll likely have to commute and work in town. Budget 1.2 million for a 4 bedroom in Waipio, Kapolei, Mililani, Wahiawa, Pearl City, etc.
The biggest problem with Honolulu in my opinion as a resident is, it’s a big city but people move too slow for a city this size. It needs to pick up the pace. Don’t get me wrong, I love Hawaii and it’s culture, but slow people in an infrastructure as congested as San Francisco, makes for a frustrating place to get anything done. Who needs to pick up the pace the most is the city and county workers who act like it’s still the 80’s here. Honolulu needs to take notes from Singapore. Night construction only.
Just to let you know that there is a bot using your handle and photo telling people to text you. I can spot the difference between a real response vs a bot. And I'm weighing moving back to Honolulu. I would transfer with my company and have a job locale in mind. Mahalo!!!
Thanks for the heads up, Jon. These bots are a nuisance! Let us know how we can assist your move back to Honolulu. You looking for commercial space for your company as well as a place to call home?
Town limits are east side is Kahala where freeway ends. West limits are kalihi and north is Pali/Nuuanu. I’m from Makiki and that’s my thoughts honestly.
Another interesting thing for me (Derek) is, you could not be from “town” town…, like be from Alewa or Kalihi Valley, and still be a “townie” imo because you’re raised spending time in town.
@@movingtohawaii I’m from Kailua and town to me was from Pearl City Aiea area all the way to Aina Haina area cuz Hawaii Kai we just drive around Waimanalo way - and growing up never have H3 to town So makakilo, ewa beach and mililani was more west side - never considered that town Just my thoughts growing up on the windward side - I guess kinda separated Leeward side from town
@@jhosoi808 hoooo all the way to Pearl City?! I actually do reference in other videos though that if you’re coming from NS, Central, or Westside, Pearl City is the first place where you see high rises and feels different after the merge. For me it starts to feel like town after the mortuary place on Moanalua freeway where used to have the coffin in the window by Shafter… basically everything after Mapunapuna. Caveat though, I don’t tend to think of Kalihi as town, because we all know Kalihi is it’s own thing, but a Kalihian is a townie.. :)

Great 👍 clarification appreciated!
Honolulu is a tricky one, even I still have trouble explaining it lol
Wouldn't downtown be considered the span between Chinatown and the State Capital area? That was always my impression growing up in Kailua/Mililani... I now live by Ala Moana, which I think a mainlander would refer to as the metropolitan area of the city...
Growing up in the Laie/Kahuku area, Town is anything from Kaneohe to Mililani. North of that is Country.
Us people from north shore, we call Kaneohe town too lol..places where get plenty buildings and stores is considered town
My cousin says I should start out here. Let's see what the video offers.
Born raise in Hemolele Place, now in 96789, Honolulu and waiks is town and down town is well aloha tower what divid areas is the rivers.. like you was confuse about where town ends and airport starts easy look at keehi lagoon and you follow moanalui stream that's what divides airport and town . Airport aka salt lake area not to hard there category's and then sub category's if you know area your in look at the rivers..
Fun note keehi was old airport for the float planes if you look at sat you kinda see how plans lands etc back then..
Wow, great way to identify places and boundaries🤙 Mahalo for your input
i was born and raised in hawai'i, specially the west side.. ive considered buying a condo in honolulu!
Our team has couple wessssiders. Ewa Beach and Kapolei
Hi Mahe, thanks for another great video. I like your bead bracelets. Are they Hawaiian? Koa? Could you please link to where you bought them? Thank you! :)
This is such a good channel. I hope mine can be as great one day. Keep up the good work!!
@@GreenWitch1 Well good luck to you! May you find what you're looking for.
Moanalua??? haha the new wears off but the haole doesnt
Yooo I am the SAME way with directions! 🤣 No idea what the exit number to my home town where I grew up
Exit numbers?! What are those?!
I’m born and raised in palolo valley housing. Lived in makiki apartments next to the freeway by the mural, papakolea, maili, waipio, kapolei, Waikiki, wahiawa, mililani, kalihi, salt lake. Island life will get to u eventually. The prices, crime, personality change in friends/family, drugs, etc... miss Oahu but had to chance the mainland life
Much respect to you. You've experienced more of this island than most. How is your transition to mainland life going?
I've lived on Oahu for over two decades, I've (begrudgingly) been to Honolulu about four times at the request of mainland visitors. I avoid it like the plague.
Yes, It is the underworld/hell. Sinners, heathens, egotistical flesh eaters, if they want to be saved they must stop eating flesh, cow secretions, and sinning. Eat brown rice and beans as a staple.
@@truthseek3017 Beans and brown rice cause insulin resistance, the commonality of the top 8 killers of human beings. Plus Town smells like pee.
Oh no. Downtown is Aala Park to Ward Ave. It has China Town, Fort Street, Iolani Palace, the Capitol, and the HPD HQ... and most of the homeless. Town is between Ward and Diamond Head haha.
That's me, I memorize the H1 freeway exits by numbers, like, take Exit 7 for Waikele, etc... much easier to remember for me 😅
Been living in Honolulu for 20+ years and still confused with the direction terms of Mauka & Makai, me thinking, I am standing in the middle of this island, don't see a mountain or ocean, how do I know which way the mountain/ocean is located, in front of me, on my left, on my right???
Don’t
96822 for me growing up is Makiki, Punchbowl area on Magazine Street.
I agree with you. Ward area is not downtown that is just "town." Lol...local Da`kine
i stayed kalakaua near ala moana mall. i must been, waikiki ala moana and honolulu haha
So you know all about “town”
I've lived in Makiki for a long time. Glad I moved to Ewa Beach.
When I inevitably become homeless I plan to return to Oahu, Honolulu where I was born since at least weather in Hawaii is stable compared to how temperamental mainland has been.
Whoops!
Mahalo!!
Seattle is a way friendlier place than Oahu, Oahu is full of ego and hate in the air.
I like your introduction to Honolulu. But you did not cover Makiki 96822. The area has the best price, best access, and lowest price rentals in Honolulu.
How low are we talking?
Maybe reminding me of Chicago
How so?
Down town is Punchbowl diamond head side. Makai is the ocean. Mau ka is Beritania. Ewa side is Bethel St. This is true and accurate Downtown.
I always thought Honolulu started when I passed the Buddhist cemetery on the Pali coming from Kailua
Fr brah too overcrowded nowadays cuz all these fakas like move here.
@@HelloThere-bj9rw sorry to hear you’re butthurt
I feel like Hawaii is the type of place where 'we're just vacationing here for a bit' is better than 'we live here permanently'.
You're so wrong 😂 Living here is paradise
Intersection of Bishop and Beretania is the center of "town"
I think the zip codes for the areas is incorrect
Tita wot school you grad from? You Akamai
"Town" would be anything past the viaduct going into Kalihi going into 'town'. - someone from Waipahu
Punchbowl where Roosevelt High... Ruff Ryda
Paws up on the video 🐾
Thanks dawg
Family of 5... 200k plus a year what kind of living should we expect
Middle street to Ala Moana beach
Ok ok… so Kaimuki, Waialae, Kahala aren’t “town”
@@movingtohawaii yah, let's call them .....Uptown lol
Once you get on King or Kapiolani. That’s where DT ends.
I like that!
P.C.S. is an abbreviation for Permanent Change of Station.
After seeing that dump, watching it leveled in the war will be an improvement.
Looking quickly, zip codes are wrong. You could update that info or remove it to give better info to people are really looking to move here.
Which ones?
@@movingtohawaii most of them, I had to go back and look
Just to let you know that there is a bot using your handle and photo telling people to text you. I can spot the difference between a real response vs a bot. And I'm weighing moving back to Honolulu. I would transfer with my company and have a job locale in mind. Mahalo!!!
Thanks for the heads up, Jon. These bots are a nuisance! Let us know how we can assist your move back to Honolulu. You looking for commercial space for your company as well as a place to call home?
Neva heard of Salt Lake being referred to as a Gem LOL
lol
It can be!
@@movingtohawaii There is always Hope
Waikiki once a year for a week at the best ocean view room. I love it. Then I am outta there. Plenty for me. Could never live there.
How come Hawaii doesn't have a major league baseball team
Yep I'm lost
we all are lol
She talks makes things more complicated 😂😂😂
I lived there for 4 years, incredible place, but very expensive, now I changed. to new york bad decision.

anyone wanting to move to hawaii after playing test drive unlimited?
Town limits are east side is Kahala where freeway ends. West limits are kalihi and north is Pali/Nuuanu. I’m from Makiki and that’s my thoughts honestly.
Aloha and thanks for the comment. Meaning Kalihi is town or isn’t town? And Kahala is or isn’t?
Another interesting thing for me (Derek) is, you could not be from “town” town…, like be from Alewa or Kalihi Valley, and still be a “townie” imo because you’re raised spending time in town.
@@movingtohawaii I’m from Kailua and town to me was from Pearl City Aiea area all the way to Aina Haina area cuz Hawaii Kai we just drive around Waimanalo way - and growing up never have H3 to town
So makakilo, ewa beach and mililani was more west side - never considered that town
Just my thoughts growing up on the windward side - I guess kinda separated Leeward side from town
