Born on the north shore but raised in California and Utah. Fortunate to go back and visit family in Laie throughout my life and enjoyed every moment despite all the negative feelings. The aina will always be home, a place of peace and comfort for me. Never forget your roots!
63yrs old..Grew up in Hono'uliuli Ewa plantation...a time when there was only a one-lane road into and out of Ewa Beach.....My Molokai wife and I are well traveled, we've both lived on the mainland for a number of years and traveled globally still, we're now living in Pearl City-Pacific Palisades, wife and I love it up here, that said.....I've caught myself on numerous occasions feeling somber, heart ache seeing, what has become of my Island home......truly my heart aches!....
Just got back from Oahu. Had a fantastic time. Made 4 trips to Windward side. We had our best food at a small restaurant in Kaneohe, “Kim Chee 1” delicious Korean bbq, we love our plate lunches. Loved the Aloha spirit of the Hawaiian people. 🌸🌺🌸
The kids on the beach were awesome. My family and I hang out there sometimes for “Aloha Friday” and the vibes are so great! I especially love how all the adults were making sure all the kids were safe. Love it!
If you're looking to move from the mainland/overseas, let the Hawaiian culture & Spirit of Aloha change you! Don't try to change it. That's where alot of people get into pilikia(trouble). Comedian "Fluffy" iglesias said it best..."Hawaiian time=You get there when you get there!"
Aloha Maila, Hawaii is the best place I ever lived. Nothing sucks about living in Hawaii. You suck 😅 The cost of living is high, and it sucks if you’re broke! I lived in Puerto Rico for 20 years, and over 30 years in New York City… I moved to Hawaii 3 years ago. My views on this subject… 1. The Weather: By far Hawaii has the most pleasant and stable weather in the world. You’re being a little dramatic with the wind, rain and sun. Try living in Louisiana, Kuwait, Afghanistan or Alaska 😅 2. Isolation: I love living away from the craziness of the mainland. 3. Traffic: I live in Honolulu.. traffic is no problem for me. Try California or New York City traffic. 4. Parking: Compared to New York City, parking is not an issue in Hawaii. I also own my parking space. 5. Culture: I grew up i Puerto Rico, I understand the culture and island life. 6. Cost of living: Hawaii cost of living is high. Ensure your finances are good before moving here. Moving to Hawaii from New York City it wasn’t a shock for me. 7. Condo vs Home: it depends, I am single so, I bought a new condo in Honolulu. Low HOA and Amazing views. 8. Bugs/Insects: I live in the city, I haven’t seen much bugs or mosquitoes, just big roaches at the park. 9. Natural Disasters: There is lower risk here for natural disasters compared to living in the East Coast or the Caribbean. 10. Graffiti: Are you kidding me. Try living in the South Bronx in the 70-80 and riding the train. 11. Golfing: I golf almost everyday. The golf courses are the best ⛳️ 12. Health and Safety: Hawaii is the safest and happiest place to live. Do your research. Moving... Already purchased... but... One of the things we find amusing every time we visited before moving is the heat/humidity. Every time people apologized for the heat and humidity. We have to explain we're visiting from a place that has 95 degree temps, 80%+ humidity so your 88 degrees and 66% humidity is cool and dry. Not to mention our afternoon hurricanes nearly every day in the wet season. We're ok with the rain level of just about everywhere except super wet places where we are not moving to. I'm sure we'll get used to it, but not all that much. Plus we have family on the islands... so we're making efforts to have our new home work for us.
Everything, except rising taxes does not suck about Hawaii. We look forward to many of the things you discussed. Living in Florida and previously in many US states and dozens of countries, it will be good to finally stay there and stay put.
What Sucks about living in Hawaii? Here are a few: 1.Tourism Overload: There are too many tourists, 2.Dependence on Tourism: Too many people rely on tourism, which is unstable. Finding ways to diversify is better for all. 3.Ineffective Policies: Some policies, particularly those from the Democratic side, seem to benefit only politicians and their donors rather than the general populace. 4.Hawaiian Electric's Policies: Hawaiian Electric’s current practices are problematic. For instance, I have a solar system and battery backup, yet I’m still required to pay $150 a month for a service I don’t use. It doesn’t make sense to mandate this kind of connection and fee structure. 5.Military Presence: The large military presence is causing environmental issues, including contamination of our drinking water and ocean bays. A potential solution could be to reduce or transition military activities on the islands. In summary, Hawaii once thrived under effective management and sustainable practices. Today, the island faces challenges due to overpopulation and a lack of resources. With limited land and ocean resources, we rely too heavily on external sources for food and essentials. Additionally, there are concerns about Hawaiian Electric’s financial dealings. It’s noteworthy that Timothy E. Bring back the Super Ferry, so that the people from the Westside (Nanakuli, Waianae, Makaha) can not be stuck in the 2 lane gridlock traffic jam (H1/H2 merge) in order to get into town for work. Is the Aloha Spirit dying each year ? Maybe; I could be wrong.
I'm born and raised in waiahole waikane and one of the hawaiians pushed out from the aina. Prices of homes in hawaii sucks and it's because of more outsiders moving to hawaii driving up the cost because realtors like yourselves know 1 mill is going to sell. Also the government failed the real people of hawaii and thats putting a cap on buying in hawaii and last but not least alot of people is very uneducated about hawaiis history the real history illegal u.s occupation and is still illegal till this day and just because it happened years ago it doesn't mean it disappears and go away and we forgot about it for us real hawaiians it's a big problem people prancing around our backyard and they have no clue what's going on politically alot of people dont even have a clue right now that theres a battle right now in higher courts to remove the united states and its illegal occupation in hawaii.
Aloha from southwest Florida! Born and raised on Oahu - Roosevelt grad Class of ‘65; mother was Class of ‘43. Moved here 33 years ago, mainly due to the high cost of housing and living. Now, it’s crazy over here, but still much less than Oahu. Thankfully, it wasn’t bad when we first arrived, so we were able to buy a home, which has increased in value by over 400%. Roaches and lizards, no surprise. A/C is an absolute must!!
You know what aunty, you need to specify what areas of the island always raining and windy cause in makaha we rarely get any rain or wind down here so try not to compare Port lock or the windward side with the west side, mahalos
Time zones, for sure. At a past job in the Eastern time zone I had to have occasional calls with a person in Hawaii, and there was only one hour each day when our business hours overlapped.
Born and raised in oahu. 60 percent Hawaiian. Left Kailua oahu because of the cost of living. You forgot to tell them how the state keeps tacking on taxes to the people. And the car registration is around 600.00 a yr and then your safety check is 100.00 a yr to drive your car on the roads. The roads are horrible and there construction to fix the freeway takes forever to be completed. If you buy a suv car there's hard to park your car. The property taxes are out of this world for a chicken coupe . Homeless is also a major problem. Traffic is horrible. I moved to Ohio and will never buy a home in Hawaii. I came back in July and seen how much in changed. A raw fish and poi and local food I think food land is the best place. $35 for good local food. Youngs fish market is also a good place to eat Hawaiian food.
Cold indoor AC in commercial establishments is a thing in FL as well. The temp in my office at my corporate job is regularly 69-70 deg. for the first half of the day, increasing to 71-72 deg after lunch. I keep a thermometer on my desk. I can feel the difference between 1 - 2 deg.
I’ve missed your videos, glad to have a new one. I think it is important to talk about the downside of anyplace. We are looking to move - someplace - and prices anywhere people want to move are insane. NH, NC, TN, FL, TX, houses in popular areas are 1-1.5MM and up. And it is hard to get a sense of a place without spending a lot of time there.
Hawaiian time bothered me so much when I lived in Hawaii (everything took weeks or mother to accomplish) however since I’ve moved back to the mainland I miss Hawaii time. I find myself driving slower on freeways unintentionally and haven’t been able to kick it and busy cities are dry overwhelming now. Miss my slower life in Hawaii Kai. ❤
I was wondering when you were gonna mention the critters 😂 I might wanna add the dirty pigeons that lurk at the outdoor restaurants to the list. Def challenging to work with the time zones while operating on "island time" over here - very similar to Guam lol. Otherwise every home has it's things... I think I'll love living here 😎 really appreciate the honesty in this vid🤙🏾
Hawaii is a great place to live but like everywhere else has its problems. Cost of living, poor educational system and inability to get anything built or done in a timely manner, and local government biggest joke of all.
You nailed it! I loved the whole video. I want to see more like this where you do impromptu interviews-how fun! I loved the keiki’s! And yes food goes stale. I learned real quick that expiration dates don’t matter. I don’t know if it is because the stuff has been on a ship for so long or what. Still huhu I can’t get that monstera shirt in that color! I am gonna keep checking the website! Please tell them to stock that colour since you probably know the company people! Mahalos!
Just came across this channel. Liked and subscribed. 14:40 I learned a new and polite way of saying some tourists are A-holes. Those insensitive guests leave a bitter taste no matter where in the World they travel. 17:10 If the merger occurs, I'm thinking it might be like when CVS bought out Longs. Though there were some changes, the 'atmosphere' was still the same and the same Longs store signage stayed the same. Funny how so many locals didn't know that Longs was originally from California! Fantastic presentation!
Thank you for this video. This is your subscriber from the mainland, Los Angeles . Yes you are right what you said about Hawaiian airlines in Alaska. I love Hawaiian airlines and what I will miss is the aloha spirit. The staff is very customer oriented. And we might not get that aloha spirit on Alaska Airlines. I guess not really sure. Plus I am a resident also on the big island on HPP Hilo side. Well thank you for this video Mahalo.🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏿🤙🏿🤙🏿
Pretty much hits it on the head. Born and raised on Oahu and too love Bend, Oregon. I especially shudder when people call Hawaii paradise anymore. It was close to paradise when I was growing up in the 60’s-80’s. Now I believe the main problem that makes it “suck” now is, way too many people!
I love your channel, Maila, beautifully produced 👍 If you could give me your thoughts...I live in Philly, I have a cousin with money who recently bought a home in Hawaii Kai. Pool, water view, and she has a small 500 sq ft guest ohana that she has offered to me. She is looking into the legal aspects of my renting-to-own this little house, but either way it's mine to live in if I just want to rent as a tenant. She has suggested $700 a month and free utilities. It sounds like heaven, compared to the $1200 a month I am wasting in ugly Philly in the same size apt. My concerns are 1) island fever - after four days in Florida I couldn't wait to go home due to the constant sun and heat. 2) Roaches and lizards - I am hearing horror stories about both! 3) I can't drive due to a medical condition, so would I be able to get around without a car? and 4) I worry about being a non-Hawaiian because my cousin has experienced hostility, which I totally understand because of the history in Hawai'i. Half of me really wants to go, half of me is nervous. Does this sound like an ideal situation? Maybe with time I could get used to these things? Would love to hear your thoughts. Mahalo!
Hawaii business be like: "now hiring - people that show up" 😂 To me, the hardest is the isolation. We don't deal with much of it in Hawaii Island, no traffic, not over crowded but, the cost of living is pushing everybody out. Absolutely the best place to live, otherwise
Can you post where you purchased that beautiful monstera blouse please? It’s gorgeous! ❤❤❤ On a side note my husband and are retired 3 years ago relocated to WA State outside of the Seattle area. Food is cheaper, real estate affordable in the rural areas. It would be hard for locals who don’t like distances but you gain a big and beautiful house.
The UV index in Hawaii is nothing compared to living here in Nevada. It is easy to get a bad sunburn here in the middle of winter on a clear sky day with a high of 45°F.
Condos in Hawaii blow. Maintenance just goes up endlessly. The BODs act like dictators. They’re really not meant for locals. And, people who own them as investment can’t really rent them at much of a profit nor airBB them because of laws and condo rules. If you own a condo, you’ll end up fighting your own BOD and paying for your lawyers to fight their lawyers (that you also pay for), so they stop raising maintenance fees because they want to do special assessments all the time because the BOD mismanaged the general fund.
IMO that(bad BOD’s) is everywhere. I lived in a condo in Vegas almost 40 years ago and we removed the BOD for mismanagement. The biggest problem is that most of the people who want to do that type of thing are the people who shouldn’t, and the people who should are too busy doing other things. I will never live in a condo again.
I live in the Uk and have been coming to Hawaii every year since 2003 and stay for a month.Next trip is in March 2025. I will say this,Hawaii is not a place it's the people.
Greetings. Hawaii is my dream location to possibly relocate. I plan to visit for the first time in 2025… I’d welcome the opportunity to connect with you…
Hawaii has become too expensive now to even visit let alone buy a home there. Plus the fact that the violence has become a problem. Disgusting and disgraceful!
I would say the traffic sucks, August heat is rough if you come from a dry climate. Eating out is outrageously expensive. For me it just comes down to money if I made 500k. I'd live there. Agreed, I saw a lot of vacancies, having said all that Oahu is an amazing place, hence the high home prices 🤑.
Another thing about the new anti-Aloha movement here in Hawaii is that much of the interactions you will come to learn with “locals“ include people using this ‘talking down to you’ method. I was raised and partially an Asian household, so I’m so I’m able to identify this problem and it is just almost like a strictness when scolding someone if they think they know better than you will try to embarrass you in front of everybody very anti-Aloha. This has now become a new form of communication here in Hawaii. It is so sad.
Living in Oregon is like living in the UK. 9 months of Lousy weather and one month of hell heat and the other two no comment. If you only know what's going on here on the mainland, you would never visit here again. I promise. Comment back, and we can discuss why I'm moving there and leaving here for good. I'm getting my little slice of paradise before It's too late. Aloha and I hope you never have to suffer again coming to the mainland and my advice! Stay where you're at. This place is a hell hole.
What sucks is that Kānaka & Hawaiʻi Locals getting forced out, taking a back seat to foreign powers (USA included). Keep Hawaiian lands in Hawaiian hands.
I’m Hawaiian and was born in Hawaii. The Aloha spirit spirit is dead. There are too many people that I’ve moved here. In comparison to other “states“ this would probably be the closest you will find to a Third World country.
Also, homelessness is rampant and the drug addiction especially to things like crystal meth are taking over a lot of the young people. If you drive a vehicle, you’ll notice that going into and out of many driveways and parking lots, the bottom of your car will scrape and caused damage to your vehicle. I would like to move to a better place like Florida or California or Texas. If you want to be near the ocean and live in the civilized, place with law and order. 🙂
Please tie your hair back. Would love to see your neighborhood and view. Doesn't the rain vary greatly by tine of year, the island, and location on the island
Our surf culture is pilau. Surfers are territorial and are punks in the water. If you're a non-local or local to a new break you will not feel welcomed. There's no aloha at the surf break. I became a good surfer and was apart of the toxic surf culture and quit surfing because of the attitudes of the territorial surfers. No one owns the wave!
My opinion Hawaii will lose its Paradise you always have to watch your back at all times it is not safe for the children of Hawaii there will be more and more crimes take a good look at the other states of the USA
You’re kidding, right? Hawaii is incredible and there’s no place else like it. If you think it “sucks”, why are you trying to sell houses to people here? Sounds a little hypocritical. Go to the mainland if you think it’s that bad.
Thank you for letting people know the reality of what it takes to live in Hawaii. There are definitely thorns that come along with these beautiful roses.🌹 If you don’t assimilate with the culture, you will be miserable. The beautiful beaches, ocean and mountains will wear off very quickly.🏖️🌊⛰️
She is too vague, too general, just a realtor trying to make $$$. Hawai’i is more than Oahu. I have lived in Puna district of Big Island for 30 months, moved here from So. Cal. I see NO VALUE in her video. My advice to people in the U.S. or Canada, before buying a property in Hawaii, the best thing to do is to rent for a year or so, then decide if you like to live in certain part of Hawaii. If you have a friend or relative living in Hawaii for a long time, their advice is much valuable to you.

If I have a good job , food and shelter in Hawaii why not! 🙏💜😍
Great video! People really need to know what Hawaii is really like, not always like the postcards.
I love this! Thanks for being so transparent and honest. 💯
THank you for being so Honest about living in OAHU !!!!!
You know what aunty, you need to specify what areas of the island always raining and windy cause in makaha we rarely get any rain or wind down here so try not to compare Port lock or the windward side with the west side, mahalos
Thank you for being realistic and sharing your heart and knowledge. Awesome. - Las Vegas resident.
Love this. I want to move so bad but the family issue is one of my biggest issues for moving...
I love Hawaii
You got the real scoop from the boys on the beach. So real ! 🤙🏼
Youngs fish market is also a good place to eat Hawaiian food.
oahu traffic is horrible? i found it to be nothing 😂
I've never lived there but what you said sounded so unbelievable I looked it up. Looks like its more like ~$350. How are you figuring $600?
Thank you for your commentary on living in Hawaii! Being from mainland and visiting your state as tourist. I felt some of items you talked about.
I think I'll love living here 😎
really appreciate the honesty in this vid🤙🏾
Housing. There isn't much and its expensive. Homelessness is everywhere
Watching from Australia and enjoying you video..
Mahalo!
Traffic is horrific for a small island. I don't remember seeing any back in the 60's.
I didn't know you are a singer!
Just found out after bumped into a Hawaiian music video the other day! 😍
Killah singer🌺
Good job in telling like it is 🤙
Hawaii business be like: "now hiring - people that show up" 😂
To me, the hardest is the isolation. We don't deal with much of it in Hawaii Island, no traffic, not over crowded but, the cost of living is pushing everybody out. Absolutely the best place to live, otherwise
Can you post where you purchased that beautiful monstera blouse please? It’s gorgeous! ❤❤❤
On a side note my husband and are retired 3 years ago relocated to WA State outside of the Seattle area. Food is cheaper, real estate affordable in the rural areas. It would be hard for locals who don’t like distances but you gain a big and beautiful house.
I love visiting Hawaii but could never see myself living there. Enjoy it from afar.
Terrific video! I don’t live there (yet anyway), but from Arizona, doing lots of condo watching online, the huge association fees suck!
I miss my Hawaii. I have been in the states for this rodeo, about 5ish years. I am constantly trying to move back home.
79° year round ??? In winter, yes, for the most part. Summer average 87°
Aww your videos are amazing keep up the good work.😃
Love Hawaii Awesome place to visit.
Great Videoooo girls keep rocking
We just moved to Kailua from Socal, and I love it. But 2 million plus for super old and non-updated homes/neighborhoods is not it.
@@H..M.. very very true!!
I live in the Uk and have been coming to Hawaii every year since 2003 and stay for a month.Next trip is in March 2025. I will say this,Hawaii is not a place it's the people.
Greetings. Hawaii is my dream location to possibly relocate. I plan to visit for the first time in 2025…
I’d welcome the opportunity to connect with you…
Hawaii has become too expensive now to even visit let alone buy a home there.
From Honolulu, Hawaii. Live in Las Vegas now.
Any little homes for someone in 70s and don't want stairs away from the beach.
I stopped watching because these aren't real Hawaii problems. These are rich entitled immigrant problems.
Lack of high paying jobs. I lived on both Oahu and San Jose, California. If you’re not a doctor or in big tech, buying a house will be very hard.
Is there a high demand for skilled workers such as plumbers?
Weather issue??? What about too many tourists, 20-30 yrold druggies running around.... international people driving....... people on phones driving...
First to like Lol ❤
Keep Hawaiian lands in Hawaiian hands.
im watching from switzerland😄
They're taxing the kids now?
Without tourist or military , Hawaii would not have an income.
I’m Hawaiian and was born in Hawaii. The Aloha spirit spirit is dead. There are too many people that I’ve moved here. In comparison to other “states“ this would probably be the closest you will find to a Third World country.
You videos was cool
Try go big Island...no trades...
1st world problems😂 we just left in May due to the God awful DOE
Bugs. The damn flying b-52’s.
Can we get the link to where to you got your shirt? LOL
it’s pretty from a distance…
I have found out that everyplace is better when you don’t have to work 40 hours a week
Is your sister Kanoe? 💛🧡💜
Yes! Are you part of her Bible study?
Also, homelessness is rampant and the drug addiction especially to things like crystal meth are taking over a lot of the young people. If you drive a vehicle, you’ll notice that going into and out of many driveways and parking lots, the bottom of your car will scrape and caused damage to your vehicle. I would like to move to a better place like Florida or California or Texas. If you want to be near the ocean and live in the civilized, place with law and order. 🙂
…live in a civilized place…
But you do realize that anyone that isn’t Polynesian are tourists? You included.
Aloha from North Shore, O’ahu. O’ahu Golf Apparel doesn’t have your monstera top in that color! Argh!
Ack!! Sorry!
Please tie your hair back. Would love to see your neighborhood and view. Doesn't the rain vary greatly by tine of year, the island, and location on the island
Don't forget the red dirt that stains everything!
Ridiculous post...u trying to sell
Our surf culture is pilau. Surfers are territorial and are punks in the water. If you're a non-local or local to a new break you will not feel welcomed. There's no aloha at the surf break. I became a good surfer and was apart of the toxic surf culture and quit surfing because of the attitudes of the territorial surfers. No one owns the wave!
Overpriced very expensive
This is exactly I don’t live along the Mediterranean in the south of France..
I hate golf courses. I wish they would all be converted to public parks lol.
Nevada > Hawaii
too many Haoles
What sucks…? Haoles.
If you have a friend or relative living in Hawaii for a long time, their advice is much valuable to you.
it Sucks? well jus leave Il have to say Nahh Hawaii is the best. Your sounding like A Hoale from mainland Jus pack up an leave
