FYI - Ronnie James Dio had been also singing much longer than Ozzy Osbourne at this point in 1980 and was quite older... Ronnie had started singing in his teens in the late 50's and started recording in the 60's, singing R&B and do-wop songs in the decade in vocal groups like Ronnie Dio and the Prophets. It was hearing bands like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath in 1970 that changed his life... he formed his first 'heavy rock' band Elf in 1972 and opened for Deep Purple... In 1976, Deep Purple's guitarist Ritchie Blackmore hired Elf to record his first solo effort Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow and retained only vocalist Ronnie James Dio for the band Rainbow and recorded 3 successful albums before he was fired in 1979 (Blackmore wanted the band to go in a commercial direction - Ronnie wanted the band to stay heavy). Because Black Sabbath was agonizing over recording a new album and coming up empty, guitarist Tony Iommi opted to fire Ozzy Osbourne in 1979 and talked about working w/ Ronnie James Dio for the next Sabbath record... Dio & Iommi clicked musically immediately, because Ronnie wanted to be heavy and brought that out of Iommi's guitar... Sabbath w/ Ozzy had Geezer Butler (bass) writing the lyrics to Ozzy's vocal melodies & harmonies... Sabbath w/ Dio was Ronnie writing all the lyrics, harmonies and melodies... while Iommi & Butler wrote & arranged the music. So it was radically different, but still Black Sabbath. However, Ronnie James Dio found himself out of Black Sabbath in 1982 and formed his own band in 1983 w/ Sabbath's drummer here - Vinny Appice.
In terms of his vocals he started out singing 60s pop rock/Doo-Wop, you should listen to some of that early stuff. Ronnie Dio and The Prophets' part live/part studio album Dio at Domino's from 1963 is a good introduction. Dio's vocal performance on 'Mistreated' live in Munich 1977 by Rainbow will blow you away! \,,/_(-,-)_\,,/
You hit the nail on the head when you said the best gigs are the ones where the band is obviously having fun. For me, the best example was the 1987 Bryan Adams gig I went to; they were so obviously having fun making music together and playing it for us that it was really infectious, and has stayed with me ever since as probably the best concert I ever attended
Sorry I missed it live there's a conspiracy at work. Ask most metal heads about the best classic metal vocalist and you're going to hear the same 3 answers a lot. Rob Halford for his brutal take no prisoners attitude, Bruce Dickinson for his raw power, and Ronnie James Dio for his subtle skill and imagination. I think you're right to compare him with Freddie. Though different in sound, they shared a precise approach to music and enormous charisma. Great reaction!
I absolutely recommend "Sign of the Southern Cross"....on the 'Mob Rules' recording from 1981. The riff from Tony is magic and perfectly glides with Ronnie's vocal. Love your channel and thank you!
Oh Aileen, there are so many gems besides Heaven and Hell in the Dio era of Sabbath... I suggest that you check them all out (they did 3 albums with him in vocals), but the best imo are Neon Knights, Die Young, Turn up the Night, Sign of the Southern Cross and Falling off the Edge of the World.
Smashed the sub button as soon as I saw you reacting to my all time favorite metal singer! There will never be another Ronnie James Dio. He is in a special league, and truly the greatest legend that ever walked this earth. He is greatly loved and missed beyond measure. RIP Ronnie. 🤘
@@geerttaelemans657 He got it from his grandmother and its a general Italian sign for protection again the "Evil eye". Ronnie James Dio was however the one that made it popular in Metal and he is the reason we are all using the sign today which is a pretty huge legacy in itself in my opnion.
@@vanhalen303 That may certainly be, its not anything complicated, i wouldnt be at all surpriced if even the Vikings used it not that i have ever heard of it. Dio was however of Italian ancestry and his grandmother was Italian.

Nice reaction! Great singer, and a gentle soul with Ronnie James Dio. A couple of reaction ideas. Ronnie was in Rainbow. Their hit "Man on the silver mountain" is amazing. Also, Rainbow had another killer singer named Graham Bonnet. His big song with them was called "Since you've been gone" worth a reaction. Take care
I seen black Sabbath live in 1980, I was 13, when he did the first album with them, BLUE OYSTER CULT HEADLINED, SOME BIKERS SETTING NEAR ME HAD WHAT I THOUGHT WAS ORANGE JUICE, HOW THEY GOT IT IN I DON'T KNOW, IT WAS A SCREWDRIVER, I HAD FLOOR SEATS, I STILL HAVE THE GUITAR PICK FROM BOC
He's definitely freestyling in this performance. Compared to the studio version, he's just taking us for a rollercoaster ride. This is my 3rd time seeing a reaction by you (previously PJ's Black and Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here) and I'm sold. Hitting that subscribe button. ✌️
Definitely check out "Mob Rules" from this version of Sabbath as well! It's a really heavy song with a cool groove and Ronnie's voice and attitude is so powerful! You'll love it!!
Dio stated that this song is about the meaning of life and his philosophy, which is that life is either heaven or hell and you choose how you want to see it. Dancing is art, the dancer gives everything for the audience but noone gives for them.
You should hear the studio version. He made a lot of good songs with Sabbath and afterward. You should hear The Devil Cried, and 'I'. Also, Straight Through the Heart, Rainbow in the Dark, Don't Talk to Strangers, Invisible, Holy Diver, Last in Line, I Speed at Night, Mystery, Egypt(The Chains Are On) Stand Up and Shout Dream Evil, Man On The Silver Mountain(studio) Caught in the Middle, ...
In my opinion, Ronnie's best vocal performance is with Rainbow 🌈. His version of the song "Mistreated" from the 1977 Munich concert or from the same concert, "Catch the Rainbow" showcase his vocal ability. However the song "Stargazer" is a must listen.
Start to finish Heaven and Hell is one of the best albums ever, and it still holds up. Anything/everything on this album needs to be reacted to (and appreciated). 🤘🏼😝
My favorite Metal band ever. My second favorite Sabbath era are with Dio. Those albums Heaven and Hell, Mob Rules and Dehumanizer are great masterpieces. Live the band used to improvise a bit with this song Children of the Sea and The Sign of the Southern Cross.
Dio definitely played with the vocals when live…..the voice of “sword and sorcery metal! This whole album, for which this is the title track, is awesome….listen to all of it!
I saw Black Sabbath twice. 1980 and 1982. Never saw them with Ozzy, only Dio. In fact, one of the shows I was at ('82, Seattle Center Coliseum) provided the venue for a few tracks included on their live album, "Live Evil." I believe that is what we are watching here...those crosses on the stage were definitely the 1982 tour.
Oh Hell yes! Dio is a MUST when going into old school Heavy Metal. I mean this 🤘🤘 we got from Dio! So he's mandatory. His influence is unreal. He inspired everyone from Iron Maiden to Jack Black and tons in between. I had the pleasure and privilege of seeing Dio once. It was with this line up of Black Sabbath in the mid 2000s when they changed this version of the band's name to Heaven and Hell. He was in his 60s by then and he sounded just as good he does here. Also Megadeth was the opener before them. One of the best shows I ever attended.
Ronnie is an absolute legend and one of those guys who never lost it I got to see him both with his DIO band and fronting Heaven and Hell (the lineup you see right here basically but they weren't able to use the Sabbath name at the time) and i've never seen anyone perform quite like him. He is massively missed I'd love to see you react to any of his work with Rainbow, Black Sabbath, DIO or Heaven And Hell
Sabbath are the fathers of metal and Ronnie was such an amazing presence and singer that you can't help but love him, i suggest listening to Don't Talk to Strangers with his own band Dio or Falling off the Edge of the World from Sabbath's Mob Rules album, great reaction Aileen!
As a singer you need to react to some of the bands like Linkin park,System of a down,Godsmack,Evanescence.....all of them have their own unique style of both vocals and sound wise
RJD loved his fans and knew who paid him ultimately. He was a gentleman to boot. This was a great intro for you to the world of Ronnie James Dio. It shows how he entertained the fans he loved.
Also as much as Dio, Ozzy & others were the voices of Sabbath, there would not have been Sabbath sound without Tony Iommi. Simply the best metal guitarist ever! 🎸
There's no fakin' that doll. His first band was in 1957. In 1967 he formed Elf. That's a journeyman of his craft right there showing everyone how it is done. 😎 Thank you for sharing it. ♥
Was fortunate to be at the Glasgow Apollo for my first taste of Black Sabbath on the Heaven and Hell tour - OMG was that really 40+ years ago!! I was deaf for at least 24 hours later 😲 RJD is much missed - a tremendous voice which I've loved since I first heard him with Rainbow. Wondrous reaction.
Dio only made a few albums with Black Sabbath but every song is worth checking out. -Sign of the Southern Cross -Children of the sea -Falling off the edge of the world -lonely is the word -neon knights
As a longtime Sabbath FANATIC (they’ve been my #1 band since I was 19 and I’m 52 now), I am of the opinion that Tony Iommi did his best work when Dio was in the band.
Dio was the ultimate front Man. He was even better once he had his own Band. Everyone in the World respected him from all walks of life. Even if they knew nothing about Rock that is how well respected he was. Also he carries a certain type of class. You would never hear him cuss. He was old school. Very respectful human being.
Love to hear you react to Liliac, the frontwoman has got a old school metal voice. When Vinnie Appisee heard her, he had her join Sabbath Knights for some songs. He called her MeloDio because she channeled him so much. Liliac are a family band from Cali, they kill “Holy Diver” and other Dio songs, Metallica, Megadeath, do originals too.
I saw Dio like 20 times in my life. The best place where I saw him was Stabler Arena Bethehem PA. Great place to see a concert. Ronnie will always be the man on the silver mountain. Nobody can touch him.

Though different in sound, they shared a precise approach to music and enormous charisma. Great reaction!
What a masterpiece just gotta say your smile and eyes are heavenly
Yes.. Love it
"Sign of the Southern Cross" sung by Dio definitely deserves a listen
When Ronnie joined Black Sabbath, he had already been a professional musician for over 20 years.
That man knew his instrument.
Ronnie was one of the greatest singers of all time.
I recommend Sign of the Southern Cross.
Catch the rainbow is a song where Ronnie sings exquisitely
I absolutely recommend "Sign of the Southern Cross"....on the 'Mob Rules' recording from 1981. The riff from Tony is magic and perfectly glides with Ronnie's vocal. Love your channel and thank you!
"Falling off the edge of the world" demonstrates some of his vocal expertise
And that riff though. 🤯
Don't forget The Devil You Know
@@Fett316 true. Bible Black is up there for sure
Speaking of making love to the song, check out "Gates of Babylon" from his Rainbow era.
Smashed the sub button as soon as I saw you reacting to my all time favorite metal singer! There will never be another Ronnie James Dio. He is in a special league, and truly the greatest legend that ever walked this earth. He is greatly loved and missed beyond measure. RIP Ronnie. 🤘
By the way, the widely spread "devil horns" gesture was brought to rock by this awesome guy right here.
Was het not his greek grandmother, who used it as a gesture against evil?
@@geerttaelemans657 He got it from his grandmother and its a general Italian sign for protection again the "Evil eye". Ronnie James Dio was however the one that made it popular in Metal and he is the reason we are all using the sign today which is a pretty huge legacy in itself in my opnion.
@@Stefan- Not completeley mistaken about the greek though. Antic orators used this gesture as well, don't know for what purpose
@@vanhalen303 That may certainly be, its not anything complicated, i wouldnt be at all surpriced if even the Vikings used it not that i have ever heard of it. Dio was however of Italian ancestry and his grandmother was Italian.
@@Stefan- I am Italian and can vouch for that. Its to prevent the malocchio ( evil eye). We wear Italian horn pendants to prevent it too. He was born not to far from me in upstate NY. 🤘
Truly 1 of a kind. There will never be another like Ronnie. R.I.P. to a true legend
One of my favorite live Dio/Black Sabbath songs is "Voodoo". Ronnie really improvises the lyrics on that song and adds a whole other dimension to it.
Such a great song that isn't mentioned that much, I agree.
"Children of the Sea" is another killer song too!
Absolutely will. This was a very good pick to react to. I will be here to enjoy your reaction
Hope you enjoy!
These Dio songs are great: Black Sabbath "Mob Rules", Rainbow "Man on Silver mountain", Dio "Rainbow in the Dark".
Also, Straight Through the Heart, Rainbow in the Dark, Don't Talk to Strangers, Invisible, Holy Diver, Last in Line, I Speed at Night, Mystery, Egypt(The Chains Are On) Stand Up and Shout
Dream Evil, Man On The Silver Mountain(studio) Caught in the Middle, ...
Yep thats the way he really sings it in studio, just a few adders in this performance😎
YES!Finally some Dio!One of the best that ever lived!I'm already on board!!!!🤘
In my opinion, Ronnie's best vocal performance is with Rainbow 🌈. His version of the song "Mistreated" from the 1977 Munich concert or from the same concert, "Catch the Rainbow" showcase his vocal ability. However the song "Stargazer" is a must listen.
I don't think I've ever heard Ronnie sing a song the same way twice. And it's always great.
Love his voice especially on his solo stuff.
Start to finish Heaven and Hell is one of the best albums ever, and it still holds up. Anything/everything on this album needs to be reacted to (and appreciated). 🤘🏼😝
You looked so damn happy on this one. Love to see ya discover the greats that so many of us grew up with 🤟
My favorite Metal band ever. My second favorite Sabbath era are with Dio. Those albums Heaven and Hell, Mob Rules and Dehumanizer are great masterpieces. Live the band used to improvise a bit with this song Children of the Sea and The Sign of the Southern Cross.
"SCREAMIN' IN THE NIGHT" - Krokus
- Like DIO - But Harder Bite
Dio definitely played with the vocals when live…..the voice of “sword and sorcery metal!
This whole album, for which this is the title track, is awesome….listen to all of it!
I saw Black Sabbath twice. 1980 and 1982. Never saw them with Ozzy, only Dio. In fact, one of the shows I was at ('82, Seattle Center Coliseum) provided the venue for a few tracks included on their live album, "Live Evil." I believe that is what we are watching here...those crosses on the stage were definitely the 1982 tour.
Rainbow - Mistreated - live in Munich - 1977. Best Dio performance, and pure live.
Ronnie is an absolute legend and one of those guys who never lost it
I got to see him both with his DIO band and fronting Heaven and Hell (the lineup you see right here basically but they weren't able to use the Sabbath name at the time) and i've never seen anyone perform quite like him. He is massively missed
I'd love to see you react to any of his work with Rainbow, Black Sabbath, DIO or Heaven And Hell
Man this was a great reaction.
Didn't realize until half way through I had a smile on my face. Can't wait for more!
RONNIE JAMES FREAKING DIO! 🤘
oooh I can't wait for this reaction . I love this song !
Holy smokes. He was incredible.
Also as much as Dio, Ozzy & others were the voices of Sabbath, there would not have been Sabbath sound without Tony Iommi. Simply the best metal guitarist ever! 🎸
DIO!! I share a bday with this legend! He would of been 80 years old on 7/10.. RIP.
There's no fakin' that doll. His first band was in 1957. In 1967 he formed Elf. That's a journeyman of his craft right there showing everyone how it is done. 😎 Thank you for sharing it. ♥
i love watching you having the groove and feeling the music !!!
-Sign of the Southern Cross
-Children of the sea
-Falling off the edge of the world
-lonely is the word
-neon knights
The greatest metal vocalist of all time for me
Agreed 🤟
As a longtime Sabbath FANATIC (they’ve been my #1 band since I was 19 and I’m 52 now), I am of the opinion that Tony Iommi did his best work when Dio was in the band.
Dio was the ultimate front Man. He was even better once he had his own Band. Everyone in the World respected him from all walks of life. Even if they knew nothing about Rock that is how well respected he was. Also he carries a certain type of class. You would never hear him cuss. He was old school. Very respectful human being.
When Ozzy got the boot from Black Sabbath, They hired Dio. Love his solo carrier and when he was with Black Sabbath.
Ronnie singing Mistreated on Rainbow's live in Munich is a treat.
The myth, the legend. Dio, forever my favorite metal singer.
Same
Ronnie and Tony were absolutely perfect for each other…they pushed each other to out some of the most magical metal ever made
RJD, it has to be said, remains a pretty universally and uncontroversially respected legend of metal.
Ronnie's own band "Dio" also has some great songs. I like "Man on the Silver Mountain" myself, but most are just as good.
My favorite song from Black Sabbath, ''the world is full of kings and queens, who blind your eyes and steel your dreams'' !!!!
I saw Dio like 20 times in my life. The best place where I saw him was Stabler Arena Bethehem PA. Great place to see a concert. Ronnie will always be the man on the silver mountain. Nobody can touch him.
Weil, you got it all right, everything you just guessed in this video, you guessed point on!Rainbow - Stargazer would have been a much better choice to get to know him and his amazing range. You absolutely have to,have to,have to check this one out as next!Till then, sending you love from Germany !Keep on rocking Girl!🤘😈
Thank you for doing one of my favorite vocalists in Rock.
I was lucky enough to see Ronnie live many times, I even met him once and he was a hell of a nice guy. There truly was no other like him, nor will there ever be again. \m/ \m/ RIP RJD.
Dio was a story teller. His songs were stories.
This guy. Truly a metal God!!! RIP Ronnie....
I loved his stint with Black Sabbath. Nothing but love for the late great Ronnie James Dio. Rainbow in the dark is a great song by Dio .
Thank you for "reviewing" the best rocksong ever! Sadley Ronny had to die so soon... The Heaven & Hell Album is fantastic! Again the best hard rock album ever made thanks to Ronny's fantastic voice and the pure greatness of Black Sabbath!
My favorite Black Sabbath song, reviewed by my favorite gorgeous UA-camr. Can’t ask for more 😆❤️❤️
