I think Star Gazer, is the story of the fall of Babylon. And I heard the 🤘🏻🤘🏻 got started, because Ronnie James Dio's mother did it at one of his early gigs and it means poking the eyes of the devil in Italian.
Dio is not only one of THE greatest vocalists in Metal history, he was also a class act as well who truly appreciated his fans. Back in 1995 I saw him, with his own band Dio, at a small club on Long Island. At the end he came to the edge, stage right, to shake hands with the audience. I'm only 5''-5" so I had to literally climb over people to try and shake his hand but was out of reach. He saw this and pointed to me and flashed me the "Horns" in recognition of my efforts. At the end of the night, after the club closed down, I was walking to my friend's car when I heard this shout "Hey kid!" I turned and it was RJD waving me and my friend over to him. He invited us to hang out on the bus where we drank wine and talked about the show and music in general. It was an experience I'll never forget.
Fast forward to 2000 and I saw Dio at Irving Plaza in NYC for the Magica Tour. After the show We see him out on the streets signing autographs and he sees me and my friend who was with me back in '95. He calls out to us by our names which stunned me 'cause it was 5 years since we met but he told me that he remembers the names of every fan that he has met and my jaw just dropped. When Ronnie James Dio passed in 2010 the Metal world lost a champion for the common fan. RIP my friend, you are sorely missed.

Awesome story and being at several festivals around the time of his passing I can tell you that he was definitely like that with everyone he interacted with. There was not a single act that didn't have a great Dio story and every single person had admiration and respect for the man. When you have your entire profession literally singing tributes to you you know you've lived a righteous life.
He truly was magnificent through and through. Thanks for sharing this beautiful story

How'd he get you the contract?"
Through conversation, he asked if we had a demo (we talked a WHILE), and where was it recorded etc. I had one in the car of course, and he actually walked out with me, took our demo package...time goes by, and our management gets a call, set up a showcase and meeting etc etc...turns out RJD had passed it up through some channels with his blessing, and ended up on an A&R guy's desk (not even RJD's label!!!!), with a note attached...
He was by far the most genuine, wonderfully caring and kind man, let alone musician...a true one-of-a-kind...I was very blessed to have met him and spent that couple of hours with him. Changed my life for sure

Same, twice with Sabbath one or two times with his band (festival memories are hazy).
But I'm a 90s kid, so they were already quite old but still amazing. To see Rainbow would have been incredible. One of the bands where the studio version is disappointing if you hear a live recording first. Some of those impros between Ritchie and the keys or Dio.

It really is just tragic irony that such a loud, incredible, pure vocalist like Dio ended up dying of stomach cancer.
But even after his diagnosis, he kept performing and his singing sounded unaffected. It must have been painful for him to do, but he really loved his craft that much.
RIP to such an incredible person.
I feel very fortunate to have seen him perform live. It was "An Evening With Dio", I think it was the year before he passed away. He sang songs from his entire career, talked to the audience about each song. He made us feel like we were all his best friend, as he told us the many anecdotes from his spectacular life. I will never forget that night.

Best story i heard about dio he was doing a gig with Halestorm and he was being mobbed by fans and lizzy asks him how he deals with it he said its only a moment out of your day but its a moment they will never forget. What a gent
I love that he seem to have understood so well how fans feel. Many artists don't seem or they just don't care or think the fansare not worthy them. To Ronnie the fans were all equal.

Not saying Dio's grandmother didn't do it but in the context of rock/metal music Geezer Butler actually did it first, there is a photo of the band from 1969 with him doing it and another from 1971, 10 years before RJD joined Sabbath, and Dio never did it with Elf or Rainbow, only once he joined Sabbath, seems too much of a coincidence to me. I believe Geezer got it from Alistair Crowley the occultist. Dio certainly popularised it though, it wouldn't be the same iconic rock symbol without him
In his autobiography, Geezer said Ronnie asked if he could do Geezer’s finger thing because he didn’t feel comfortable doing the clapping thing Ozzy would do when performing.

The story I heard about the "devil horns" was that Dio's grandmother always did it as a way of warding off bad spirits or something along those lines. If you notice he does it with the fingers going forward and later people stole it or adapted it to "horns" up and it turned into devil horns. Just the knowledge as I've come to understand it.

In Italy, the horn sign is an act against bad luck (it's also connected to infedelty but that's another story), so i guess his grandmother was italian

Actually it’s was Freddie who sounded like Ronnie not the other way around. Ronnie started his career in 1958, much earlier than Freddie.

@@ronnienose8608 hell yeah. As much as I love Ozzy, and it’s a lot, Dio is by far untouched vocally speaking imo. He just had it when he sang it was a like beautiful literature. Not just a song. He told beautiful narratives, even like that way she addressed that he can make things like “yeayeahhh” and “ohhh” sound so soulful and meaningful.

Us metalheads call him by his full name due to the enormous amount of respect he has in the community. He was also a great person, humble, encouraging,kind and generous.
Also, just "Dio" is more recognizable than "Ronnie". His last name is less common than his first name. If you want to identify other singers with a single word, it would be Halford or Dickinson rather than Rob or Bruce. It might be the other way round with Floor Jansen, I understand that Jansen is a quite common last name.

Best singer is just impossible to tell. There are so many just as good as him in other genres, from rock and metal to opera and pop (Chris Cornell, Pavarotti, Mercury,...). Same for frontman: I personnally find Bruce Dickinson a better frontman, for example.
But yeah, Dio's a beast.

I saw him live in July 2009. He was 67 years old and dying of stomach cancer, and he had the voice of a titan from the opening song to the final note. Dio is the godfather and power metal, and a legend! \m/ \m/

My dad introduced me to rock music. I remember being in the car with him and him driving me somewhere, and he would put on rock music. This song especially is one of the regular ones. My dad is a huge fan of Dio. I can say I'm a fan too.
I have such vivid memories of us singing this song in the car. It's one of the few moments where my dad and I connect. Anyways, I love this song. It's pretty special to me.
At age 11 the end of this song gave me chills. Now at 52 still does.
We refer to him as Dio or Ronnie James Dio instead of just Ronnie because the man is a god and a legend. The rest of us are just mere mortals blessed by and grateful for his music.

I met RJD in 2000 at the NAMM show in LA. He was at the Dean Markley booth with his band. He was hands down the nicest rock star I ever met. I introduced myself and said "Ronnie, for me this is like a catholic getting to meet the pope". He told me that was the nicest thing anyone had said to him in a long time. He signed a picture and took a picture with me. RIP RJD, we love you.
That's something I've heard from pretty much everyone I know ever met him. That man was normal and nice to a level of it feeling weird in the world he was part of.

Because he knew he was only a man. You should be careful of people that think they will never die. Those people have a power complex. Dio was amazing, both as a singer and a human being.
I had tix to a Scorpions / Cinderella concert. Scorpions had to cancel because of Klaus throat problems. Refunds were given. Instead of taking the night off Cinderella played a free show. I thought that was pretty cool too. Great show too.
His biggest advice to bands was that when they met fans it would be something that the fan would remember. So always make it a good memory because the fans are the reason they make music.
I also had the chance to meet him and he was kind and fun and smart. I will always remember those times.
The horns he makes with his hand go back to his Italian roots. He learned that from his grandmother who would do that to ward off the evil eye.
Glad to see this, I came to the comment to post it. It's a protection symbol, people forget that a lot of early metal artists were superstitious and if you're going to sing about evil you ought to give yourself some protection.

Gene Simmons also claims to have invented that hand symbol. Gene Simmons is also a notorious egotist though, so I'm more inclined to believe Dio (whose reputation is that of a seriously generous and grateful dude).

Fun Fact: Ronnie James Dio was never a trained singer. When he was younger, he played trumpet and throughout his singing career, he used breath control techniques he learned as a trumpet player.

I just read his autobiography. He became the lead singer out of necessity in the Electric Elves since the other singer/players left the band. When they became just Elf he knew then he had power in his voice. Hope I didn't spoil it too much. Get the book!!

I met Dio backstage once. When he signed my t-shirt, I asked him if he could sign with his favorite verse from one of his songs. He signed with the first letter of each word: T W I F O K A Q W B Y E A S Y D I H A H. Amazing singer and songwriter. RIP RJD. We miss you.

Dio's said the horns he throws up originated from his Grand-mother, who was religious and superstitious, and would point her fingers at him like that because they were the "devils eyes", to signify he was being watched when he was doing something naughty. He evolved it from then and now that hand gesture will live on forever

I did two tours with Dio back in 87 and 89. He sounded absolutely great every night. Not only a professional on and off stage but a truly kind man. Those tours were some of the best times I can remember. When he passed away rock and metal lost a true legend.

I met Ronnie several times and yes, he and Lemmy were both the nicest people you would ever want to meet. He loved talking vocal technique too. "Always sing from your balls" he told me. Kind of ironic that both he and Lemmy's graves face each other at Forrest Lawn
I have many stories, the first tour I ever did was in 1987 on the “Dream Evil” tour with Dio. I was 17 and at the time it was like a dream, no pun intended. I ran lasers for the show’s. Megadeath was the opening act, so for a few months I had the pleasure of watching him perform 5 nights a week and I don’t think he ever sounded off at all. On nights off the Crew would go out and a lot of the time the band would join us. I spent many nights drinking with Ronnie and picking his brain, the man was incredibly kind and had the insane ability of remembering everyone’s names years later. I would run into him from time to time and he always had a smile and would always make the first contact if he saw anyone he knew.
I do have a ton of stories that I could tell, but it would just take up more time than anyone needs to sit through. Still the best time I had in any tour and he is greatly missed. RIP to the master RJD!

@@nomidubidabi haha, the stories are best told over drinks. I will say the first time I met him was pretty insane. The tour had been going on for a few months and I was there to replace the operator. I was 17 but everyone kept telling me to say I was 21. So that night I watched the show and saw what the cues were, as well as the set up, etc.
After the show during the load-out the tour manager came out to say that Ronnie wanted to talk to me. Keep in mind I was a huge fan of him before this ever came up so I was nervous as hell. I was taken to the dressing room and the whole band was sitting there, Ronnie offered me a Heineken, handed it to me and the bottle opener I had would not open the damn beer. After fighting with it for a while Dio grabbed it from my hand and threw the opener aside grabbed another and opened it for me. I know he saw how nervous I was and handed me the beer back saying that everyone had a problem with that bottle opener.
After that I sat on a couch next to him and we talked for about an hour, smoked a joint, and he did everything he could to make me feel welcome. I play bass and he played bass back in Elf and some other bands so we talked about that among many other things. He told me how young I looked for being 21 to which I just had to laugh. By this point Jimmy Bain was passed out wasted on another couch and Vinny was passing another joint.
I can't stress enough how kind he was, how much he cared about everything and everybody, and the insane ability of performing at that level night after night.. This is the tame story of the day I met Ronnie James Dio, maybe later I will talk about the times he got me laid.. .hahaha Cheers...

The devil horns comes from his grandmother who lived in Italy. Ronnie James Dio is Italian. His grandmother used to do that to him as a child to ward off the evil spirits. so he Incorporated it into his live shows and it caught on as a Universal symbol for heavy metal
It was called the "Malik" (ma-ēēk). However the hand gesture predates Ronnie's grandmother by many MANY years.
I believe there was 2 things to it as well. The horns up at someone was to ward off evil and pointing the horns at someone was basically "cursing" them, no?

Didn't it have something to do with fending off the "Evil Eye". I read somewhere it was called that and his grams pulled the sign to random people who looked at her the wrong way. Ronnie started using it because he thought he had to have a a hand sign too, since Ozzy used the victory sign.
@@Raipela yeah, pretty much what was posted up a little above my comment. An interview with dio said it was an Italian superstition. He'd be walking with his grandmother and she'd give people the horns that were giving them the evil eye. Said it was called the Malik (ma-loik is he he pronounced it)

One thing that you might have missed about Black Sabbath is that their guitarist, Tony Iommi, is a left handed guitarist who lost the tips of his ring and middle fingers in a work accident as a teenager. He plays with prosthetic finger tips.

I have been wondering why these reaction videos are so appaling and it hit me hard.
You know those evenings with your good friends or family. You hang out and you try subtlety put some your most loved tracks/artists on and hope that your company finds the greatness that resonates with you. But always they are like "meh" as you are waiting with grin on your face for their responce. You cant connect between you and your loved ones through the music you hold dear so much.
But with Elizabeth, it feels like you are with her, just hanging around listening to your favourite tracks and she notices all the perfect little things and more that makes you play those tracks and performances over and over again. Elizabeth makes you feel like she is your best friend for the night. So cozy, so warming, perfect anti-depressant and relaxant for busy daily life.

Totally! There are tons of reaction channels out there where they simply love whatever is they are watching but it feels a bit cheap. Like a friend who would just like everything you showed him to make you feel good. But when the reactor actually notices little things and honestly seems to enjoy discovering your favorite band is a priceless feeling. You nailed it, that's what makes some reactions so special. You feel some weird validation for having liked those artists, someone really gets it!
Very much on point, but sometimes it's something else as well. The more knowledgeable reactors can point out things you may not even have (consciously) noted even after hearing your favourite songs many times. And that can add to your understanding as to WHY you like some things so much.
That is a great way of explaining it!
And Black Sabbath couldn't have been so spectacular without Ronnie James Dio!!

Usually live versions aren't as good as studio versions vocally but Dio is an exception. He was always perfect.
I've always preferred live recordings over studio. But that's in general. Yeah, you can often find recordings where the live vocals are sub-par.
Him and Rob Halford are the only ones I enjoy more on the live version

The least any fan or critic of contemporary Rock music can say about the original recorded version of "Stargazer" is that it is the most epic 70's classic Rock song of that entire decade!!
Dio was is Shreveport Louisiana years ago with Blackmore's Rainbow as it was first called (just Rainbow later) me and my best friend was stage row rockin out when Dio walked to the edge of the stage bent down and shook my hand and hollered, "you got it, you got it" twice. Never will forget it, it was the highlight of my Rock & Roll life. Greatest metal voice ever !!
Elizabeth is like a breath of fresh air bringing new life into one of the greatest songs and story telling of all time and the introduction of dio to a new audience. May you all be and feel as blessed as we all did when we experienced these gods in the 80s

I have to regret the first time I saw black sabbath played with dio at the Los Angeles coliseum on the heaven and hell tour even though I loved the album, I went there to display my anger at the band for giving up on Ozzy. To this day the album has to be their top 5 all time

I met Ronnie James Dio backstage at a show in my hometown after a show. He barely came to my chest in his platform shoes. My friend asked him to autograph a T-shirt. He initially refused because HE DIDN'T WANT TO RUIN THE SHIRT. That's how humble he was.
I could tell by the look on your face that you were blown away in the first 30 seconds of hearing his legendary delivery. Truly delightful to see Dio's continued impact on new generations. He is indeed in the league of the immortal Freddie Mercury as you correctly stated. Respect.
I got to see Dio 6 times. He owned the stage when he was there. He would walk out, grab the audience by the balls and say "I'll give these back when I'm done".

Dio, a physically small man, but damn he's a giant if there ever was one. legendary and pioneering in a musical genere that spawned about a thousand subgeneres.
He understood the power stance that allows you to use the strength in your legs to open the chest/back help project the voice. Bruce Dickinson dose the stance a lot too.
I saw Black Sabbath on this tour, was my first concert. And thus started a lifelong love of RJD’s voice. R.I.P Ronnie, I miss you😥
