As a US citizen, I always thought that Gary Numan was a one hit wonder as I only heard his big hit Cars on the radio. Was surprised a few years back when I discovered that he was big in the UK. Then recently one of his videos popped up on my UA-cam feed. The thumbnail looked interesting so I gave it a play. I was blown away with the sound. I never realized the depth of Gary's music. I went to Numan's official UA-cam channel and watched all of his music videos. None of them disappointed. Shame it took me 40 years to "discover" his sound.
He had more #1 hits than Cars even back in the day. But yes, he's released well over 20 studio albums and keeps moving forward with his sound. Never turned into a "retro" act. From the mid-90s on you could characterize his sound as heavy industrial/electronica but even then, it has kept evolving. Gary himself has said the great thing about electronic music is that there is always new stuff being released, so always new sounds to discover. He's definitely one to get a new tool, get the best sounds out of it for an album or two, then move on to something else.
I must admit it was this song that brought me back into the fold as a numanoid. After the late 80's and early 90's I'd kinda drifted away but when I heard this on karrang I nealry died it was so fuckin awesome. I went out and got the album along with exile and have never looked back. THANK YOU GARY
we were all waiting for a glimmer of the old.Lost faith late 80's. By accident caught a review of Pure on the internet somewhere. Was so glad there was something new and meaningful to grab hold of. Since then, an upward spiral.
I have been a numanoid for over 30 years. I have had the pleasure of seeing him live about 20 times. He is a fabulous musician who just gets better and better.
Maybe besides Are Friends Electric, I much prefer everything Gary wrote from around 1994 forward. His music transformed into such powerful and moody songs, dark, brooding, poetic and hauntingly beautiful!! Can't get enough!!
Gary has reinvented himself big time. His move to the u.s.a. has inspired him and made him very musically creative. He's producing his best music ever now.
I have been a huge Industrial Metal fan for years and I really think Gary meeting Trent Reznor resurrected Gary's passion for heavy music and I know Trent was very influenced by early Gary numan material. I must say I have been so impressed with his later music and saw him live in spring 2022...it was phenomenal. When he played Pure I went nuts.....
This was the song on Kerrang! That made me realise Gary Numan has reinvented himself to be awesome! I used to listen to this on repeat as a kid, over and over when i recorded the video on Sky Digital lol
Ignoring the incorrect description for a sec, I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for this one, because this was the song my best friend re-introduced me to Gary with. I hadn't heard any of his post-70s stuff and was instantly hooked on the darker style.
When I first heard Gary human in the 1970s it was as if he was from the future with his hypnotic music and even forty years later it's as if thes in the driving seat of the future.
I was just a baby when Gary Numan first made a name for himself. It wasn't until this album came out (me then in my early 20s) that he truly grabbed my by the heart and brain stem. Ive been a huge fan ever since.
I'll get down on my knees I'll do anything I can I'll even walk upon water Ill give somebody disease I'm so sick with need I'm so sick with pain I'll lay before the cross and pray I'll bleed like holy rain Ive gotten sick of the pain Oh dear I pray HEY HEY HEY I've done nothing to you HEY HEY HEY I've got something for you I'll rip the skin from God's face I'll say I'm searching for the truth I steal the light from heaven's gates If it can guide me to you I'll give life to obsession I'll give life to disease I'll give you one last sin or cure And then I'll do as I please HEY HEY HEY I've done nothing to you HEY HEY HEY I've got something for you
Yes! This is the moment that Gary found his old "spark" of genius. I remember seeing it at the number one position on an old rock tv music channel (who's name escapes me right now). But this was 'Pure' genius! So good to see Gary relevant again. This stuff marries perfectly as a transgression from his early classic stuff. And that Matrix coat. And those boots. Memories of walking down Oxford Street fulling decked out the same with my dyed black hair and guyliner. Happy daze. Gary your deserved appreciation from joe public started here.
sometimes it seems a bit like Numan and Reznor swapped styles somewhere along the line, with Reznor moving more towards minimalistic electro tunes and numan getting more aggro heavier and complex. Not complaining in either side, but I still think it would be fookin amazing if they both worked on a project together, especially if it was a more involved concept sort of creation. just like if they were able to put everything else aside (minus families of course) and throw every bit of anger and frustration and pain together as a cathartic maelstrom. ...yeah... that might be pretty cool, lol ^_^
I wish Gary Numan had a universal logo. Like Nine Inch Nails - NIN, or HiMs - Heartagram (which has completely transended it's meaning and taken on a life of its own in pop culture, but that's another story, which will be told at another time) so that I could get it tattooed on me somewhere. Coz Gary's entire music catalogue is like the language of my soul.
There is the Banner Repeater/Shunting disc symbol from Tubeway Army. There's also The Pleasure Principle Pyramid/Triangle. There's also the "Exile Spider" as I like to call it.
Gary has been gone fully industrial since 2000. Pure and Jagged are dark industrial album. Along the way, he reduces the darkness in his album. I feel his newest album goes to romantic industrial. I'm not complaining since I support musician who keeps challenging himself to make different album each time.

I just found out last Sunday. He's a legend
If you think THIS is good (and it is!) you absolutely HAVE to check out his Splinter: Songs from a Broken Mind & Savage: Songs from a Broken World!
Brilliant song. Brilliant artist and musician. Probably one of the best artists I've heard in my nearly 65 years on Earth.

He was always amazing in my opinion ❤️
That was after his wife introduced him
To Depeche Mode and Nine Inch Nails
He's still god
Erm na he’s British he didn’t need to move anywhere to be an amazing talent 😊
😂 Its likely due to his higher blood pressure & stress. This place is 🥜 with that stuff! 🥴🥸😵🤓 That's nuff to change a fellow. 🗣

He's beautiful in alot of ways
After another dose of Gary Numan cheerfulness, I can go out and face the world with a smile.
Yeah there's nothing more uplifting than a dark, sombre bit of Garydustrial to make the world seem just that little bit brighter 🤣
So glad I rediscovered Gary Numan. His music is incredible as well as his texts..

Oxford Street London or Sydney? Because if it's Sydney there is a definite connotation!
