He is finally thanks to this. I know there are a lot of people who think everything after Telekon sucks but some of my favorite Numan songs were from that period. I'm grateful that Gary didn't give up because it did look bleak around 91-92. Gary now has a beautiful wife and a lovely family, so I wish him continued sucess. It also taught me you shouldn't let people drag you down. If you stick with it and believe in yourself, good things will happen.
No shame. I grew up with his song In Cars, but didn't find this one 'til 2016 and found out he's been steadily releasing some great music all this time. I'm just glad to get to experience it ❤
@@KCBudd THIS! Been listening to Gary Numan since the 80s, never saw him live until Cruel World....and without a doubt, EVERYONE needs to see this guy live. He blew the place up.
Bowie, spoilt rich kid had bigger backing from the music industry mainstream which went out of their way to destroy Gary's Music Maestros Talent far superior than that of Bowie! Forever Numanoid Tubeway Army! 😎
As someone who grew up in the eighties, I can attest that this video accurately portrays the struggles of trying to listen to music or watch a video on any format of cassette tape...
Think he might have nicked the idea of Betamax Bandit off of Mighty Boosh. Or did they steal it from Gary? Its an important question that everyone should think about deeply.
There is a video I think about they go to a record store with a artist and tell him to chose his top 5 favorite albums or albums that influenced them. Gary Numan came across as the nicest most laid back guy that you would love to hang out with. Seemed very down to earth.
Rictor Rockets I always thought the song and video was about Jack The Ripper's ghost. The lyrics seem to go with when Jack The Ripper met prostitutes and then killed them in the most brutal manner. The chorus lyrics definitely. But also the Synths in the chorus sound reminiscent of a distorted choir of female singers, almost like the voices of the women he's killed, forced to sing for his continuous reign of terror, if an unlucky person stumbles through an old passageway in the underground to find the television. If you listen to his demos on Jagged, Pure, Savage as well as the songs on Sacrifice and Exile you can hear that he has used the synth sound of Gregorian Chants or Choirs, typically found on the Korg M1.
Slightly similar, but with a little difference. I think it was intended though, as I heard that his "Savage: Songs from a Broken World" album was meant to be a "sequel" of sorts to "Splinter: Songs from a Broken Mind."
I was thinking they apparently had the idea going here on the keyboard melody, it's slightly similar, but they hit perfection on My Name Is Ruin. Best song ever there, I am in love! So glad I found out about it the other day! Now just been checking out his other new ( to me ) music, since I didn't know about it until the other day!
Numan rocks that top hat so wicked- perfect hook to the Reggie Cray era look. I think people under-rate Gary's attention to visual details and theme- there is some serious graphic design and attention to classic references. People constantly underestimate this guy.
I'm watching him live in less than a fortnight. His music is stunning, it places you in different levels of consciousness... without the drugs. And that is unique xxx
No x necessary, kids... it’s sickening how many people have ruined their lives for those damn pills. Stay far away from them, if you like thinking clearly and feeling emotionally well xtc /molly will kill the part of your brain responsible for your emotions. Forever. 🙏✌️❤️😢
I just saw him live two days ago... utterly amazing show, even after all these years he still brings the house down, this song in particular just blew me away
I like the change in Gary Numan's music recently. Very Nine Inch Nails influenced. Turned from being alien/robotic music from the new wave scene from the late 1970s and early 1980s and gave it a more up-to-date gothic image with an eerie, dark edge. Good to see Gary Numan again after all these years.
NIN was Influence by him, Trent has even said so. So strike that reverse it...Mister Numan was going this way a long long time ago... people are just really noticing now. saw him live last year and it was incredible.
I saw an interview were Numan was saying he though NIN was the best bands around today. He said Rezor sets the bar and resets the bar with each new album. Two masters feeding of each others talent. I love it. They are actually very good friends. If you haven't seen it there is a live video of Numan and NIN doing Metal and Cars on UA-cam.
Gary amazes me as an innovative artist. His sound has evolved over the years in such a way, that when you look at his older work, you feel nostalgic, and when you hear his new work, you feel inspired. Truly an amazing artist and musician!
Gary Numans' music has come a long way from his debut in the late 1970s til 2day. His music has matured from robotic 2 the atmospheric darkness of 2day. He joins the small band of musicians whose music gets better with age
I literally heard this song in a club for the first time this past weekend. I couldn't stand still or stop listening to this after returning home at an ungodly hour. This is real music (along with the industrial, industrial metal, and dark wave music this club plays) I can move to.
Gary Numan is a Genius. The dark master of British Music. Keeping it alive over this side of the pond. Love his sound and also other brooding uk sounds from Massive Attack, Tricky, Unkle, Portishead, Kosheen, Ghostpoet, AllFlaws
Most intoxicating song ever written????? I bet he he said "I think people are going to like this one" (after coming up with that synthy chorus). Saw him play it in Chicago (The Metro/2014)...hadn't heard it yet...and he blew the place away!! I still get that psychotic smile just thinking about it 7 years later!!.
Gary's appearance at 2023 cruel world popped up on my phone. Could not get this song out of my head. Only knew if his song cars. How in the hell did I miss out on him back in the day. I have been delving into his catalog. Pure genius!

Thank you for this piece of art Gary Numan. There is such thoughtful depth in this song and video. As someone who experiences multiple self-states from childhood trauma, I find this arrangement very therapeutic. The idea of the self, watching the self which is watching the horror is presented. Then the horror loses one dimension of depth as the observer presented becomes entangled in the tape (presumably containing the horror). The lyrics "everything bleeds" representing the horror bleeding through, rather than blood itself. The introspective questions "Do, do you know my name? Do, do you know what I've shamed?" With hope, that information is what the observer receives as the distance from the horror to the self closes.
I once attempted suicide while listening to this song.... Had to stave myself away from listening to it for the longest time because of that stain. Glad it's finally clean again enough to where I can listen to it again and feel fine. Don't neglect your family and friends, people. And by neglect I mean in the only way it matters - Empathically, Attentiveness, Exclusivism. Love.
This guy is very underrated. This song is of such high level of quality, it deserves awards many. Wow, Ok, we're not discovering electronic music now, but the pure sound aesthetics in this are so excelent! This is very pleasent to listen to.

Numan at his finest. I cannot get over how he has remained relevant for all this time. Of course, for us fans (Tubeway Army 1978 would be me), it doesn't matter. This track has everything, and so does the video. Love. LOVE.
Oh, wow, Gary! I'm same generation as you, although I didn't wear white socks (but always suspected you didn't, really, either), and I was always pretty damn sure your "Cars" didn't have too many furry dice. I was the alt rock kid that was totally into you despite the social tribal cost to my rocky High School reputation. And these long decades on, I am now absolutely LOVING the new stuff!!! But here's a thing - how's about a definitive classic Velvets cover from you? I'd love to hear that and would not be the only one. Make it a Nico cover, and your old alt audience is sold for eternity and your newer audience is amazed and confused. Which is the kind of thing what we want, isn't it? And masses of your own new stuff, obviously. OBVIOUSLY - MORE MORE MORE, my friend - keep on going, my oddly-eyebrowed musical hero!!!
Gary Numan deserves much more credit than he gets!

Yeah, I think it's a motif that was intentionally repeated, like Pink Floyd would repeat certain musical phrases in "the Wall"
