    True story. I was near the entrance to Disneyland in Calfornia, the evening of Sat. Dec. 23, 2022. And I saw him with his wife and oldest daughter. I recognized him, and called his name. His wife turned around and then he did. And it blew me away. I was lucky enough to chat with him for a few minutes and took three selfies. I remember asking his daughter if she knew how cool he was. She had headphones on and Gary said "She is probably listening to my music". Super nice guy and humble too. It made my year, as I am a big fan of his. First saw him in the 1980'sl, and 3 times in the last 6 or 7 years. He is a pioneer in the field of electronic music and very underrated and under-appreciated. He should be in the Rock Hall of Fame, but those a-holes have about a 20 year backlog to catch up on. Happy New Years to all music lovers out there!

      Nah he hasnt. I was a massive Numan fan in the 80s and stopped listening in the early 90's because he started putting out crap, and he admits himself he lost his way. Even now whilst his career is well and truly on track his music does nothing for me, all just sounds the same to me. He is obviously doing something he likes, and lots of fans clearly like it, but I imagine theres a fair few of us from the 80's that cant relate to his current style. Nothing wrong with that, its evolution.

    Interviewer: Do you feel detached from the music you made early on in your career?
    Numan: A little bit, yes. I do. I can’t imagine how you would feel connected to something you wrote 35, 40 years ago. Even if you’d had a fairly boring life, age alone would make you feel like a different person. The only connection that remains is what those songs did for you, how they thread through your career.
    From a creative or emotional point of view, they’re like the vaguest of memories. You listen to these songs, which were essentially teenage tantrums, and it’s difficult to relate to the angst that bothered you then. It’s like looking back at old film of you as a kid: it’s nearly always embarrassing.

      I feel that. Even when I found e mails or message I wrote to someone 10 or 20 years ago, I feel like it was someone else and ask myself how is it possible I wrote that, bad or good. With regard to us, as public, fans or just consumers of any art it's different, we always connect for example, some song to some event or feeling, not all, but lot of music we listen after decades, it means feeling was strong ( feels~good~man )

      Why does Gary bother to play these songs live anymore, then? Because they are the building blocks that have made him the truly great artist that he is today, and indeed has always been. Songs such as Cars, She's Got Claws etc. define him, and they cannot be dismissed as juvenile attempts at songwriting - right from Down In The Park, Are 'Friends' Electric? etc., he created a brand-new sound of incredible depth and maturity, and though of course he has moved on from those early years, those songs sound as fresh and full of unique imagery as they ever did and remain as testament to his great and highly original songwriting skills, in my humble opinion. Let The Machines rock!!

    • @bartdhoye1913
      @bartdhoye1913 7 років тому +2

      Small detail: It's not a fact that Gary has Asperger. Gary deducting he has Asperger is not a medical diagnosis by professionals, but a conclusion he made himself - or so he claimed in an interview. A self-diagnosis is not really the same as real diagnosis.

    • @ryanhunter226
      @ryanhunter226 7 років тому +1

      Bart D'hoye
      just because you haven't been diagnosed doesn't mean that you don't have it or receive it as if you are permitted to with a Diagnosis. I can tell he has Aspergers, I've noticed from his personality. I was diagnosed with Aspergers back in 2011 but I knew I had way before then.

    • @bartdhoye1913
      @bartdhoye1913 7 років тому

      Not being diagnosed or examined indeed doesn't mean you do not have it. It still is a possibility - but nothing more. But claiming you can decide 'on his personality' without having a medical degree in psychology AND intensively examining the patient in close encounters that he has this disorder (or not), that is just bullshit - even if you have it yourself. I have been diagnosed with another kind of 'disorder' - in English it would be called savantism for lack of better word - this does not give me the ability to diagnose others since I don't have the needed experience or training to do so.

    • @karenaudreytodd
      @karenaudreytodd 7 років тому

      That is complete bullshit statement,because Psychiatry is NOT based on any actual science or medical science. It is simply a bunch of personal opinions about un-provable theories, which are not even really theories, but hypothesis.
      There is ZERO actual science behind it, it's opinions about opinions and nothing more.
      As such ANYBODY can diagnose anybody including themselves and that opinion is just as accurate as that of any psychiatrist. It really doesn't matter how many degrees one has or how much experience one has when there is NO ACTUAL SCIENCE involved.

    • @bartdhoye1913
      @bartdhoye1913 7 років тому +2

      Still, I prefer someone that actually studied the field and has a lot of experience with the different types of disorders to make the diagnosis - an educated guess is a lot better than an uneducated one - especially since many of those disorders are treated with medicines that can be harmful and/or addictive.
