1963 Austin-Healey 3000 MkII Sebring: Bred To Race

  • Tony Parkinson has been an Austin-Healey enthusiast for a long time. First contact came in the form of a 100S he spotted as a 10-year-old, and as proof of that moment’s staying power, 43 years later Tony would get the keys to the same car. In addition to fulfilling his childhood street car dream, he also owns the race car featured in today’s film, an ex-works Austin-Healey 3000 MkII Sebring.
One of just three built to contend the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1963, these cars were taken off the assembly line and put through a comprehensive upgrade regiment of non-homologated parts that saw the cars racing in the prototype class. We catch up with Tony and this remarkable piece of Healey history to enjoy the rare treat of taking a proper factory-built race car onto the track.

Had my ‘67 Healey in the family for over 50 years now. Has just turned 90k original miles with same drivetrain. It never fails to bring a smile to my face listening to the unique growl of the dual exhaust shifting through the gears. 😊

"Dad, you finally got a proper car."
I couldn't agree more with the son's sentiments. Great Britain made so many iconic cars in the 1950's and 60's. Jaguar 120's and e-types. Aston Martin DB4's and DB5's. Not to mention Land Rovers, Bentleys, etc. But Austin Healeys are one of the few marques remaining where a guy could buy a car with all of that classic British styling and aura and not completely break the bank. And they provide the added bonus of allowing (or demanding!) the owner brush up on his wrenching skills if they don't already have them!) Beautiful car. It's really is a combination of all the wonderful things in British motoring.

      @tkreitler 4 роки тому +1

The Brits had something special going on during this period. The Healeys have risen in value to where they are out of reach for most people. If you are willing to lower your sights a little, there are some good values in classic British sports cars like Triumph, MG, and Lotus. These cars are easier than even to maintain. Parts are fairly easy to find and the web is full of information on how to keep them going.

The Brits took many things for granted during their time in the sun in the Sports Car arena.
They didn't reinvest in themselves and innovate.
They sat back on a popular design and instead of following Porsches lead improving the breed and reinvesting the dollars to improve they sat on their hands.
That is exactly how the JDM blind sided the British Sports Car industry.
When the 240z came out it cut the industry a death blow with it's sword.
Took a lot of British design and improved it.
The 240z was a modern Healey......light weight modern motor ,long legged, roomier, reliable, and could fit the American's the British we're selling to for decades.

@@MindDezign I was just watching a documentary on how the British copied the Japanese production methods in the late 60's/early 70's in the motorcycle industry. You can watch similar videos of British manufacturers but what you don't see is how the Japanese were constantly measuring, testing, honing, measuring again etc. One thing the Brits forgot to copy was quality control.. This is hard for me to admit being a British car and motorcycle fan. Then again, it might explain why my garage is full of cars and motorbikes from Germany.

    • @MindDezign

@@erichakanson7010 let's face it in Germany it is perfection in thier DNA.
Brits have always been " Cleaver" and very thrifty..thrifty is not really thier fault.
R&D in Britian was always past on to the consumer and after so many complaints , that could no longer be ignored they would address the issue.
That's what American's went thru during the envassion of BMC .
Japan gave car magazines a car to road test any complaint went directly to the production line and changed to resolve that issue.
      American's noticed it right off.
The Japanese at that time took designs already in the market , evaluated it and improved the design, Saving themselves millions in start up industrial design.
They did do the R&D and provided a better product for less because they didn't use money to come up with the design.
Like the British , thier own natural talents ,would catch up to them.
Meaning they now have to come up with thier own designs which is difficult for them.
It caught up to the British , they could no longer ,parts bin assemble cars.
But even the American's it caught up with them as well...just could not build V8 cars the size of a home with poor fuel economy and ox cart suspensions.
The WORLD has merged and the cultures no longer have distinction.

    • @MindDezign

@I'LL BE BACK ! and over head cam not over head valves.
Independent rear suspension and full synchro gearbox. And roomier with not a lot of real estate used.
All things the HEALEY just remained the same thru it's production.Only Improvement was roll up windows. ( It's only an improvement for the Daily driver...not as a Sports Car.
      But the market was changing.

I feel the exact natural match with my Modded Datsun Z.

I added this video to those I like because the driver has respect for the molybdenum synchro of the gearbox, ratio sebring or tulip maybe, but it does well the double declutching at the fall of the reports of the true Healey box. It's not so often that we see good drivers. I emphasize - thank you - nice video!

I grew up around old sports cars. Spent my earliest years in the pits at local SCCA races in central California. My Dad raced a number of cars; a '54 Jaguar (with an Oldsmobile 303 V8 in it), a '56 Porsche 356A Coupe, and a formula junior. I've seen little Lotus "pancake" cars (I don't know what else to call them. They were SO tiny!), "Birdcage" Maseratis, AC Bristols, Porsche 904s. I have NEVER seen an Austin Healey with a hard-top. Always been drop-tops. I have to say that a Coupe version is a sight to see. Very clean lines. Probably the nicest Healey I have ever seen.
I have what you might call "an affinity" towards British sports cars. My dream car is to build a Triumph TR4/TR5/TR250 to my own accord. Drop in an Olds 215 aluminum block/Rover 3,5 liter V8 bolted up to a nice 5-speed manual gearbox, IRS rear-end (maybe out of a Subaru STI, with limited-slip diff) 4-wheel discs, rack and pinion steering, and a killer stereo! Leather upholstery, of course.

The Shelby Cobra 427 was a 289 on steroids - and that 289 actually was an English sportscar made by AC.
AC, Austin (Healey), Triumph each made "classical English two-seater sportscars" for a long period. Carroll Shelby wanted to race against Ferrari. He first went to GM for engines but got rejected. So a Ford small block V8 went into that AC.

Lovely video as per usual, however, as anyone residing in Australia could attest, simply even using the loud pedal seems to envoke auto-alarm responses in the country's police forces. It's a crime that even in country areas and with driving standards being so poor, the authorities are utterly unwilling to increase speed limits. So glad I still have UK citizenship so my thrills come courtesy of European less 'nanny' legislation and the most beautiful roads on the planet.

I like Healys but love MGs

Having owned both, I have to say the MG was much more dependable as the Healey had awful electrics and fuel system . I drove the Healey a lot more than I ever drove the MG and even took the Healey to Maine from VA one winter. Just a lot more fun to drive with a lot more power and fantastic design.
