  • What if the mother of modern JRPGs, Dragon Warrior (AKA "Dragon Quest"), opened its mouth and a song came out?
By the way, I co-created a party game called “Use Your Words” that’s on PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Steam, and the Wii U! More info at useyourwords.lol/

    LYRICS:
In the olden days of yore,
this kingdom was barren and cloaked in darkness
    Until Erdrick (Noble knight!)
Used balls of light to set the kingdom right
And you, as his descendant, are fated to defend it
Go fight! Bring back the light! O, Dragon Warrior!
The princess must be rescued soon (preferably this afternoon)
The ball of light must be returned (but at the moment you’re a noob)
You may be brave but you’re a small, weak rube,
You’ve got so much Xp to earn
(So get your ass out there and grind)
Gotta grind, gotta grind, gotta grind it
Lotta stuff, lotta stuff, gotta find it
Sit down and commit now to legit rounds of outwitting shitclowns
Gotta grind, gotta grind, (Break it down now!)
    (You gotta grind!)
Lotta stuff, lotta stuff, gotta find it
Keep an open mind when in a bind ‘cause who knows what’s behind it
In this game everything takes a really long time
Holy balls! Don’t you know that there’s stairs there?
At this pace, it’s a slow and deliberate climb
SLOW MY GOD... like a snail with a walker
This game’s hard, you get mad and controllers are flung
Where the fuck are these magical doodads?
How did kids have the patience to deal with this dung?
Jeezy Cripes, how did anyone play this?
Don’t be discouraged, just read Nintendo Power
Or call the Nintendo Power Line number,
Or just get the strategy guide!
Now they’ve got more of your cash,
but you have the power to slay a dragon!
For a little extra dough, you’re in the know
    Ya fuckin' run the show
This quest was just a cunning attempt to make more money
    They win, you paid again!
    That’s Dragon Warrior.

Real talk for a second, you would think that the king, who desperately wants you to save his daughter and get the orb of light from the dragon lord, would just give you the keys to the armory and tell you to get the best equipment that you can carry. Sure you'd still have to grind but you'd think he would probably make it a bit easier right?

Joke's on you Brent. With a year subscription to Nintendo Power (around $15 at the time), they actually gave this game away as a free gift, which also included a world map, a level up chart, and other strategies to help kids along. It was definitely not a cash grab, because the total package they were giving away was easily worth at least 4x the subscription cost alone, maybe even more. In fact they probably lost money in doing so. Even still, love the song. The melodies really bring me back.

So that's why I have those things! Growing up, my parents played a lot of video games, and so I did too. (For age reference, I remember my older sister getting a SNES for Christmas, though I was pretty young.) I have since inherited all the old gaming stuff, and I always wondered why we had all those Dragon Warrior aides when I never saw anyone in the family play the game. Now I know why. Thanks!

You forgot the booklet that served as a complete strategy guide for getting through the game, complete with recommended levels for every part and full maps of all towns and dungeons.
So not only were they wrong about the game being a cash grab, but also the strategy guide, as it also was free with the Nintendo Power subscription.
The only reason NP did that was to try to get more Americans to play the game as it was far more successful in Japan.. a trend that has haunted the series since. I don't care.. I still like DQ more than FF.

Four fun facts; 1, when you reach levels 17 to 20, walk around south of the ruined village, a metal slime worth a TON of exp will spawn there routinely. 2, some of the actors in the dragon warrior commercial (seen on the screen a few times) were also in a short lived tv series called Wizards and Warriors. 3, the man that makes the screen flash after he talks in the very first castle restores your MP (thats what the flash is). 4, The nintendo power strategy guide to this game is now rather rare, and somewhat valuable.

It's funny you made that connection. Often people complain about pay to win games, DLC, or a bunch of accessories required, as if they've suddenly become money grubbing monsters. We forgot Nintendo has been milking us since early NES.

CrimsonDarkness SS But that probably makes it better. At least it's quickly accessible now. Then you'd have to go to a game store or book store to find what you needed - if it even occurred to the person to do that at all.

    • @Clymaxx
      @Clymaxx 9 років тому +5

Seegtease I don't really see it that way. Games were hard back then because game design was still in its infancy. There has been *a lot* of trial and error throughout the eras to know how to make a game accessible to gamers of different experience levels. Selling the strategy guides was definitely a business back then because of this, but I don't think they would have stopped making games hard if that were the case. (Partly internet walkthroughs too) If they were out to milk us for money, they'd still be doing it.
I think especially in the early days it was not about the money. They really wanted the glory of making a working, great game. Things were different. Now the corporate world has recognized the cash cow that is the game industry. Back then, they were all skeptical and would barely invest in it.

    • @Seegtease
      @Seegtease 9 років тому +2

Clymaxx There would have been a lot of people who stopped playing games because they simply didn't have the resources to beat it. They learned quickly how well strategy guides were selling because of impossible tasks, and not all information was available in-game. By the time PS2 was around, but not so much DLC, they were really milking it. Think of the Zodiac Spear from FF12 - four arbitrary chests you are not allowed to open, the information was exclusively made available from a strategy guide. While this is late in the strategy guide era, who is to say they weren't employing similar concepts from an earlier time? They aren't stupid - the sales of strategy guides spoke for themselves, where you could find different "unofficial" versions of guides for some games. It was a lucrative business, and they knew putting secret stuff helped sales.

    • @Clymaxx
      @Clymaxx 9 років тому +1

Seegtease I do agree about items like the Zodiac Spear. A bit excessive on the secrecy and criteria. I really did think it absurd when I played it, finding out afterward. I probably only did 70% of the game's completion.
You do have a point, they put secrets in there for a reason. But I enjoy the challenge and rarely use walkthroughs if I can help it.

It was great. I had played Dragon Warrior Monsters 2: Cobi's Journey on GBC back when I was a kid which was my introduction to the series, but until picking up Dragon Warrior I had never experienced a game proper. Since then I've played Dragon Quest 8 on PS2 when that came out, then I went back and played 1-6 on emulators. GOOD STUFF. Now all I need is to nab Dragon Warrior VII on PSN. I'm sure it's still there. EDIT: Dragon Warrior 3 is my favorite.

I played this game for the first time 10 years ago. It is a very difficult game and altogether different animal to Final Fantasy.
Took me about 30 hours to complete it. I actually enjoyed the game except for one thing. I hate RPGs that require action menus to complete simple tasks like talking or examining an object. I understand that in NES days it was a matter of learning best practices until we realized that method is cumbersome. Moreover it annoys me that some SNES games still utilized this method.
Regardless, great game that paved the way!

Hey guys, if you are wondering where the series is today, it's not going in the right direction. Square has been keeping the Nintendo titles away from anywhere outside of Japan, and basing from the opinions of those who imported these games, they shouldn't be blocked in the first place. From a hashtag thing my friend started we can raise awareness for this embargo (It's a start anyways) so brentalfloss , and anyone else reading this if you could throw in your sword and shield we could use some support by the next E3, the hashtags we are using are #dragonquest4thewest and #savetheslimes , so use them anywhere you can get word out. Facebook, Reddit, Twitter, and even the main Site for Square Enix of EU and US (Plus anywhere else so people can see the halt on DQ games). And of course we welcome any more ideas if you guys have any. If no one else will take their time in fixing this (company or review wise and be organized), why not us on the internet?

God, I remember when Dragon Warrior first came out. In fact, Dragon Warrior 1 & 2 on the Gameboy color was the first game I ever owned. When I was a little kid I beat the game without any kind of problem at all. However now that I'm in my 20's I ended up getting the game again and beat the first one but the second one... I couldn't figure out where I was even going on that game. Made me wonder "What part of me changed since I last played it? Why is this harder then I remember?"
I love games like Dragon Warrior.

Bruh, this game is my childhood. I grew up on it, and I love it to pieces. I do admit though, the grinding does suck, but I never needed a strategy guide, as I had my dad to help me. Like with the Sunshine Stones or whatever they're called, the Staff of Rain, how to get through the cave with the Green Dragon and the princess without a torch or using any MP, where the Coin of Eldritch is, the Eldritch Armor in the abandoned city guarded by that one knight, where the fairy flute is (four steps south of the fountain), and so much more. Honestly, for those deterred, it's still a great experience, and the sequels are pretty good too (I like three the most though).

Aww, this started cute, and I totally laughed at the grind because yeah the game was super grindy as all get out, but I was hoping for a...happier ending? I dunno. I feel like there were other parts of the game that could have been mentioned, like Akira Toriyama doing the art, or some of the monsters like the Goldman, or the insanity that was having to use the light spell in dungeons, etc. I mean I liked it, it just ended on such a bitter note.

  • @an_orcat

I'll have to disagree with the message the song brings.
    - Most people who had Dragon Warrior got it with their Nintendo Power subscription.
    - The strategy guide was distributed as a bonus issue initially. But I could be mistaking this for the FF1 strat guide too.
    - All NES RPGs were utter complicated without a strat guide. See FF1, which was way more grindy and GuideDangIt than DW1.
    - An alternative to a strategy guide is... well... talking to NPCs. Works just as well.
I know you hate money-grubbing schemes, but DW1 wasn't all about that, if you took time to explore the game. It brought a great series that always had quality RPG gameplay, even to this day, as opposed to the FF franchise, which has been decaying since FF8.
Musically speaking, stellar as always. Lyrics-wise, it seems like you have a chip on your shoulder.

    • @an_orcat
      @an_orcat 9 років тому

***** Well that's pushing the envelope, really when it comes to Zelda 1 and 2. I'm 35, so needless to say, I played these games quite a lot as a kid. And the first game I needed a strat guide on was Final Fantasy 1, as the NPC dialog wasn't all that clear. And once I got that mystic key, the rest fell into place pretty nicely. But when it comes to the Dragon Warrior series (3 came with the strategy guide as the "instructions booklet"), I had no issues whatsoever. Even less so with Zelda 1, and logistics-wise with Zelda 2 (in-game action was an entirely different matter on that one, however).
Those games are feasible without a strat guide, and with a sustained effort.

My own 4 year old post didn't show up at the top for me, for some reason, so deleting my repost and slightly repeating myself:
If my first RPG ever was something other than the GameBoy Color remakes of Dragon Warrior 1 & 2, I might not have ever gotten into the genre.
Dragon Warrior 1 includes every clue and tool you need to win without a strategy guide. Only thing I didn't do on my first playthrough just from following the in-game hints and exploring was find Loto's Sword. It was tough, but I beat DracoLord anyway with an off the shelf Flame Sword and maxed out experience.
Dragon Warrior 2 I couldn't solve on my own (it was finding the quest item I needed to add the Princess of Moonbrook to my team that I was lacking in). It was a valiant effort on expanding the scope of the first game, but some of the specific quests like the strange hiding spaces of specific seals is just kinda bizarre.
It's still my favorite genre and my favorite franchise within the genre even 20 years later.
