1:35 I remember seeing the "Now I've seen everything" gag in plenty of cartoons from the golden age, but I never fully understood it. I always guessed that the joke was how nothing in life could surprise them anymore, so they may as well stop living. That said, I always thought there had to be more to it than just that. I love dark comedy, but aside from the sudden shock value I never got much else out of it.
Two things I've realized about why Looney Tunes is so good. First, it utilizes cartoon physics masterfully. We're willing to suspend our disbelief so much that anything can happen and we're fine with it, and because of that, a lot of the humor comes from the possibility that literally anything could happen and we just don't know what. Watching Coyote and Roadrunner? We know fate dictates the coyote must fail, even if his plan seems like it has to work. So some breach of physics must happen then. But there's almost zero way to tell what it will be, and that's what gets us. Second, Bug Bunny himself, his character as a whole. His sheer smartass-ery and ruthlessness is never dull to watch because again, the universe always seems to be on his side and he can bend reality to his will, and once again, whatever random BS he ends up pulling is so out of the blue, it makes it funny. There's one episode where Yosemite Sam is trying to blow up his boat, and he sends a bomb on a little sailboat over to Bugs' side. And without batting an eye, Bugs pulls an electric fan out of his butt and blows it back over. And as far as his ruthlessness goes, I have to point no further than his time impersonating Leopold. I really think those are the biggest reasons he's such a great character. His unpredictable control over reality to pull anything out of his butt when he needs it, and his sheer ruthlessness and stonefaced will to do whatever he needs to to get back at his enemies.
Bugs shooting Native Americans and singing a song to keep tally of his headcount is fucking wild. Like I forgot how racist old Looney Tunes can be and they were showing this to kids. 😭
fyi, most of these shorts were not originally meant to be shown to little kids, they were cheap intermission fodder for movie houses which was only really frequented by adults. they would commission entire reels simply to keep the audience occupied while they reset the projector for the next showing, because some places they had to manually rewind the film and it took a few minutes so they would flip on a secondary projector with an animated reel set up and just turn it off when the movie was ready to show. This was the era ones like the frog croaking and strip tease lizard come from. It wasnt until much later that they repurposed them for children.
A lot of these are original scores, you may not find it anywhere else. You could probably track down the original episode since there weren't that many with Witch Hazel. Good luck!
