I was 16 in 1976 when this program was recorded. I saw Warren live twice in the 80's. Both shows were awesome and he blew the roof off the place. I've owned all of his releases in LPs, Cassettes, CDs and even 8 Tracks. He was very popular with us in the military and we even converted his song Jungle Work into a Jody Call. He was a great song writer, singer and artist. He is sadly missed and we could use his insight today with all the craziness that we see.
Two sources I keep returning to over and over again - Monty Python and Warren Zevon. That's what happens when you grow up in the 70's. Thank God. RIP brother. "Don't it make you want to rock and roll, all night long..."
"It's uh . . . (LONG PAUSE) really got nothing to do with the Eagles . . ." So brilliant, so witty, so badass, so original, so lyrical, so warm, so gracious, so much fun and so fucking patient! RIP Warren ZEE-von! (But I do wish the interviewer had had the patience/insight to question Warren about how his mother "set the record straight" on 'Mama Couldn't Be Persuaded'. Love to have heard more about the banjo story too. . . Ah, well, just grateful that he walked among us and wrote and played such masterpieces.)
I love him just singing and playing live. Genius. The interviewer is bad, however. Can't even pronounce his name correctly. Doesn't seem to be very well-prepared or even know who Warren is. And Warren is gracious through the whole thing. Love him. Miss him.
I love at the end when the interviewer tells everyone to have a good morning and Warren says "I think it's afternoon, man." Always a smartass, but a genius smartass.
WHEW!!! OH---- I love Warren So so much. This was beautiful. A whole bottle of tequila in an hour, eh buddy? He kept hinting that the (decent!) interviewer should say "Zeeevon" but dude didn't catch it. Loved the man, voice, brain, and word choice. And he was easy on the eyes as well. Since 76. RIP.
Thanks for this phenomenal interview of Warren Zevon in 1976. This is awesome. Warren was articulate and sang on the spot regarding many of his tunes from "Excitable Boy". Even drinking on the radio, Warren didn't get sloppy or obnoxious. Warren Zevon was absolutely one of the most talented song writers of the 70's.
Thank you. I really enjoyed this. When I first heard Warren, I realized that he was one of the genuine honest talents whose music would be with me my entire life, more meaningful than most. True and honest talent prevails.
This is a phenomenal interview with Warren in 1976. This was also "Live" and off the cuff. It just shows you how versatile Warren was as a performer, musician, and interviewee. He's articulate but modest. Warren had humility back in 1976. He was a smart man, and well read. Great tunes and all done on the radio. Thanks for this interview.
It's unfortunate that the person doing the interview was so out of his depth, but most people would have been when dealing with Warren. Nonetheless, this is a lovely little window into this period of his life, and the performances are fantastic. Thanks for sharing.
I was thinking the same thing. The interviewer sounds so young. But when I see this was recorded in October of 1976, I am forced to remind myself that in October of 1976, I was only 16. LOL 😂. It doesn't seem like almost half a century has gone by.....
@@gern7535 That’s it - he’s just young. I can easily imagine an older, more established interviewer coming off as pretentious and having a worse rapport with Zevon than this relative kid managed. What a time capsule. And it’s easy for me to forget how long Zevon had already been writing music and playing gigs abroad. It’s rare even for a debut to have so many knockout songs. He may have had to be convinced a bit to do an album but he was fully formed as a songwriter and certainly had his own voice.
what idiot gave this a thumbs down? This was THE greatest rock n roll station ever. The coffee break concert got many people through the day. It certainly did me.
He was in very fine voice on this. I missed a lot of Warren Zevon music through the years, after Excitable Boy, and only rediscovered him because of hearing "My shit's fucked up" at the end of an episode of Californication a few weeks ago. It's a shame.
WZ once told me I "look like every guy who ever ran for Sheriff of Pitkin County." Thanks, I think. Meanwhile, this recording sounds like it was recorded internally (without airchain processing and FM artifacts). Did you work there?
no worries! I would have loved to have grown up in that era when FM radio wasn't "commercialized" most of the bootlegs I've heard have come from those great stations like WMMS, WMMR, WABX the list goes on!
I heard this show live. WMMS Was the KING of FM Radio. They set the standard for AOR format and broke through the ceiling on every other end with Belkin Productions at their sides.
Where was the record company with the prep for the interviewer? No one knew who he was back then, but at least WMMS gets credit for being an early supporter even though the interviewer was left high and dry with no help. I wonder if the record company guy even showed up.
Too bad the interviewer couldn't be bothered to learn how to pronounce "Zevon" correctly. Also, his obsession with The Eagles and the word desperado was just downright weird. Just because The Eagles had a song named Desperado doesn't mean they own the word.
The guy sounds young. He's just trying to figure it out. The questions are mostly social in nature. Somehow the kid got a great interview and performance out of him though.
Correct! What!...but they are insulting in nature....Warren plays 5 songs in HIS FACE & he asks what do you sound like LIVE?.......WTFuuuuuuuuuu%&$@! @@johntallanger4036

The Edgar Allen Poe of Rock. He could make the nicest song and inject darkness and his own fallibility along side happiness.

Great interview… but who kept thinking zĒvon!!!
The smartest ass in the room. Bless the great Warren Zevon. Made my life worth living. Thank you.
G.E.N.I.O.U.S. Miss you everyday Warren...love you man...40yrs+ listening to you soothe my soul!
Genius......
Still listening after all these years. Really miss those days.
Thank you. I really enjoyed this. When I first heard Warren, I realized that he was one of the genuine honest talents whose music would be with me my entire life, more meaningful than most. True and honest talent prevails.
Spot on. Same for me.

no problems at all! always happy to spread the word on Zevon :)
john meyer this interviewer was a dumbass and waayyy out of his depth. It surely is a wonderful bare recording of Zevon, and a nice download.
One of a kind , till the end . God bless you . See you around the bend. Love you
This is easily some of my favorite renditions of some of Zevons greatest songs. AMAZING, 1 of the best singer songwriters of the last 40 yrs.
I'll keep Warren in my heart FOR A WHILE
I “ I really didn’t want to do it except the exact way I wanted to do it “ That quote sums up Warren to a T to me. Great video. Thanks for posting

This is so nice
He was very underrated.
You think?.......Doi!
The Buzzard! Back in the day. Warren Zevon! Back in the day.
Man knew Stravinsky. A giant. I put him in there with Gershwin and Dylan and Carole King. More than anyone, Zevon reminds me of Berryman, the poet.
what idiot gave this a thumbs down? This was THE greatest rock n roll station ever. The coffee break concert got many people through the day. It certainly did me.
as of this date...3 Dislikes...don't have a heart attack, goober
That was fucking amazing.
Thank you for sharing .
I smiled through this entire thing.
Wow, THANK YOU, I grew up listening to WMMS and love Warren. I'm from warren, imagine that! PEACE!

Thanks John. ....
Wow. What a treat to hear him interviewed in that time. Thank you.
What i remembered the coffee break concerts were at the Agora ,
Mark infla In the very early days (like this broadcast) they were done from station's studio.
He has one of the most recognisable voices ive ever heard along with Gerry Rafferty and Neils Diamonds and Young
39:35 ‘Waddy, where are you??” 😂
Good ole Days.....Matt the Kat !
Thanks for this.
This is major time fantastic...thank you!!!
this is wonderful. Thank you for sharing.
Fantastic, thank you!
WTAH - this interviewer. I don't know how WZ set through this.
Finally resorted to fast forwarding through the awkward and uncomfortable interviewing to get right ro the music. Great stuff.
Yeah right? It's like the interviewer didn't know Warren's music or what to ask or what.
22:50 the last thing he said to his ex-wife, which was a week before he died, was “we’ll always have Spain”.
not a worry. couldn't agree with you more my friend. You can even hear him cracking open the tequila bottle whilst talking. Never missed a beat.
WZ once told me I "look like every guy who ever ran for Sheriff of Pitkin County." Thanks, I think. Meanwhile, this recording sounds like it was recorded internally (without airchain processing and FM artifacts). Did you work there?
Unfortunately I was born a good 16 years after this interview haha. I found it as a bootleg back in the days when I was a bootleg fiend

Ahhh, MMR.☺
That interviewer was so square, man. 😮
"I left out the strange verses."
Where was the record company with the prep for the interviewer? No one knew who he was back then, but at least WMMS gets credit for being an early supporter even though the interviewer was left high and dry with no help. I wonder if the record company guy even showed up.
Not necessary ; RCG's son was interviewer . . . .
New Zealand. This song the b side of the warewolves of London, Exitable boy, banned, never to be played, truth thing.
Too bad the interviewer couldn't be bothered to learn how to pronounce "Zevon" correctly. Also, his obsession with The Eagles and the word desperado was just downright weird. Just because The Eagles had a song named Desperado doesn't mean they own the word.
WMMS - FLY HIGH BUZZARD ! best FM of all time , ever !
No one could fill his shoe's.
This has got to be the worst interviewer in the history of interviewing. Fortunately for us, warren suffered fools gladly.
The guy sounds young. He's just trying to figure it out. The questions are mostly social in nature.
