This time we recommend a Racing game for your collection, and that game now, must be HEAT: Pedal to the Metal, by Days of Wonder! In this video, we also feature the Heavy Rain expansion!
Heat is a racing game that uses hand management and clever card play to move your cars around one of several tracks, making sure you manage your speed as you approach corners, deal with the stress of the race, and push your car to the limit as the engine heats up! A reimplementation of some mechanisms from Flamme Rouge, HEAT heats them up and puts them in a theme we adore, the golden age of formula one racing!
Heat is a game where the theme and mechanisms are brilliantly intertwined and expressed in a fabulous way. There are weather mechanisms, a way to tune your car to the track with a garage module, press who you want to impress as you scream round the corners, and plenty of different tracks, all with their own levels of difficulty!
Heat does a tremendous job at feeling like a race, with every twist and turn filled with drama as you slipstream past your opponents round a tight bend, dumping heat from your engine to scream past in to a long straight. Moving up and down gears enables you to play more or less cards, which determines your speed, but also dictates if you can cool that engine down allowing you to take more risks in future.
There are plenty of decisions to be made each turn, and all of them are focussed around one thing... being first over the finish line.
